This looks amazing, it's a real trip. If I had seen this as a teen in the 80s it would have blown my mind. With todays technology, wouldn't it be cool to have a real free agency 3D game with these kind of non-photorealistic anime graphics and physics? To be really immersed in an 80s anime world, with all its quirks.
I know this is three years too late, but J-Walk had nothing to do with the OST for the AC version. They only did the one song they used for the Japanese Mega CD port made years later.

I was really confused for a second, because I thought this was the 1987 game RoadBlasters, and I was going "I don't remember it looking like *this*" :D
trying to guess the plot: the hero is an ex-member of that car gang, who decided to stop this life. He got married to the woman he loved, but the gang leader wanted him dead because he left them(maybe she was in love with him too)
Actually, the hero is an officer of the Special Car Police (SCP for short, also known as the Mobile Armored Task Force - MATF in the European Mega CD version of the game, or STOP - Special Task Operations Police in the North American Sega CD version, or SMP in the LaserActive version of the game, titled Road Prosecutor), a law enforcement agency to take on violent vehicular gang activity. In response to the SCP, the gangs all conglomerated into a crime syndicate called RRR (called the Black Crows or Black Birds Gang in Road Prosecutor, or SCUM - Secret Criminal Underground Movement in the North American Sega CD version), which is lead by that evil woman. Now, the officer had gotten married and was going on a honeymoon with his wife, but the RRR attacked them, and ran them off the road. He survived, but his wife didn't make it, so he went vigilante and pilots the red LX-5 car (chassis no. 000) to take revenge on RRR. In Road Prosecutor, the protagonist is named John O'Hara, and the evil woman who leads RRR is named Suzie. In the manual of the Sega CD version, the officer's wife is named Cindy. (And yes, I know it's an old comment I replied to)
@@alexk8792 that's okay, I read it, didnt know there was an actual plot to this game, seeing how the production team went out of their way basically not show the hero's face.
The authors were inspired by this film. They even wanted to make the protagonist look like a gray and a mature man, who is obsessed with sexual problems.
@AmigaOmega Yes, it's done in Daphne, the game works perfectly there. It doesn't have any recording functions though so you have to use FRAPS or similar programs to record stuff.
@Slash0mega That's what you control, the crosshairs. Makes it more difficult than simply pressing left or right when the arrows flash as it has to be positioned right in order to have enough time to move it to the required location in many instances.
used to have this game on my phone before they took it off the app store. It was pretty cool and very addicting, it took a few hours to beat but it was satisfying to beat a game like this. I personally like this arcade version
Then you never heard about Dragon's Lair. 😜 It was released in 1983. The CD was manufactured in 1982. Those games are essentially videos recorded on CDs, that are picked according to some input. I assume it's harder to make the animations than the programming code.
Mad Max is popular in Japan, because many Japanese citizens like Australia. In fact, some other video games and anime feature Australian references. And Road Blaster was created by employees that later founded Technos Japan.
Gee, you sure seem to endanger the lives of lots of civilians in your pursuit of revenge in this game. Which is exactly the kind of behavior the gang members were engaging in!
I remember playing this as a kid on the Sega CD. Always would die just after swapping over to the vans. I had no idea how close I was back then to finishing the game, and I'm kind of glad as I think the 8 year old me would have been very upset to find out.
HUH!!!! I didn't know there was an arcade version of this before the Sega CD!!! :))) Well, I think Sega CD did a phenominal job adapting this game. I also think the music on the Sega CD version is better.
Actually you are right, the Sega CD ending had a MUCH darker and better saxophone playing in it. It actually was more somber, and more fitting to the ending in its bittersweet tone. The ending for this one actually sounds upbeat considering the guy lost his wife and killed pretty much everyone.
You also have to remember at this point in time Laser Disc, and even the audio was still in analog stereo, or dual mono if the disc had dual tracks. it was not till the very late 80's and 90's when they started to code digital audio onto the disc themselves, and then not even all players could decode the better digital audio, so the audio on the SEGA CD is pure clean Digital redbook CD audio if I remember correctly which is why it sounds better overall.
This game reminds me of the opening credits of Naked Gun the movie. I'm disappointed you don't drive up a roller coaster at some point. Also: "Hey man. You just f*cked up your Ferrari. "It's not mine. And neither is this!"
Yoshihisa kishimodo, who made both this and cobra command, went on to create double dragon. in fact, the car from this game can be scene abbandanned at a parking garage at the very start of the first double dragon.
Couple of more notes and a question or two, since I never played this version: After watching the whole thing, I think I actually like the Sega CD version's soundtrack better in general. It looks like the SCD version has a few prompts that weren't in this one at all, I can't really think of a good reason to do that. (I noticed at least one spot in the last level had a brake in the SCD that wasn't here, I think.) Do you have to aim for the boxes when turboing in this one?
i want a high quality version of the opening music without the guy talking over it because the music in this part sounds great. unfortunately i do not think we will ever get to hear this track without the guy talking over it.
