  • I am a 27-year-old female solo sailor beginning my circumnavigation. My boat is a 27 foot sloop named Gecko. Follow me on my journey as I learn about heavy-weather sailing, the trials of being solo, and my adventures in paradise. This week I sail overnight from St. John’s bashing into headwinds to arrive at St. Martin the following evening.

    It actually makes it easier to understand what this sailor is about by watching the videos “in reverse,” as I have done. She’s young, and seems so knowledgeable that a video like this appears rehearsed or staged. But after viewing a later video with her mother and getting a synopsis of her early years and upbringing, it makes perfect sense. It can be quite perilous to assume that one can merely “follow a dream” in viewing her sailing around the world. Success, in this case, stems from years of experience and knowledge gained living on the water. This level of expertise is not gained from watching videos, or jus treading books or taking classes- it must be lived, as she has done.

    excellent! lives on 27 foot boat, has open storage space "I have nothing to put in here" LoL. Thumbs up for hanked-on sails and a bunch of other great simplicity decisions.

    I like the orderliness and simplicity of your boat. I don’t think I’ve seen a sailboat with empty storage. Wonderful setup! Please keep an eye on rusting on the bottom of the propane tanks. You do NOT want to be near one should it fail. Please leave missile launches to the professionals.

      @jmo7783 4 роки тому +1

      @joe jitsu In Vietnam the US use to drop propane tanks with detonators from aircraft and set them off just above the ground. The pressure wave killed absolutely every living thing in it's path.

    Meals in Jars! In February I had been sailing about 4 weeks single handed up and down the Strait of Malacca. Very busy place to sail, no time for nothing. Weeks before that trip I prepared about 12 jars of cooked meals which I just heated up when time to cook proper meals was short. Leaving the helm for 30 seconds to pull the rubber seal on a jar, firing up the stove and pore the food in a pot was easy and quick. Especially for overnight passages and boats without refrigeration abilities should try that old techniques to preserve food. There are lots of tutorials on UA-cam about how to prepare food in jars. But for you, and taking an eye on you gas consumption, maybe you could look for a nice somebody who allows you to use their kitchen in a house. For me, it was even fun took cook.
    Cheers!

    So I watched a documentary on a group that retraced the voyage of Sir Ernest Shakelton to Antarctica in 1915. The chef rotated the eggs every day so the yolk would not sink and touch the bottom. He claimed this will double the life of your eggs. That is of course unless they have been refrigerated. In that case you won’t have much shelf life unless you keep them refrigerated. The original documentary of his journey was on Amazon Prime. It is such an amazing story of survival. I highly suggest it. It’s called Shakelton’s Captain.

    Ok, I think your the type of gal that will for sure be proactive and logical about things. Solar, is key. And regardless of what anyone says to you about keeping things cold, the best investment at this point is an Engels fridge, for you it does not have to be a big one. But trust me when I tell you, it will be the best investment you will make. Do NOT GET A DOMETIC they use way to much power even tho you will hear great things about them. The Engel .7 amps which will take you many places :) I absolutely love what you're doing and HOW you are doing it. You are a star in the making, so don't get discouraged and keep a steady stream of videos coming in. May Poseidon give you steady winds!

    I love that you have been hands on on all repairs and refurbishment. In preparation for joining the live aboard/cruising community here shortly, I have watched tons of videos and learned that fixing and repairing things are a constant on a boat and if your not a fix it type person, this isn’t a lifestyle for you but I disagree. I was not raised around a father to teach me how to repair and fix stuff but I have never been afraid to learn and get my hands dirty. I find it encouraging to watch videos of people who have chased their sailing dream and never let what they didn’t know, stop them. Really loving your videos. Hope we cross paths one day!

    great strategy to keep everything simple and to have 'touched' every piece of plumbing and wiring. Love the diesel engine, no engine management system to fail, no electronics, hand crank option to start it, will run for ever.

  • @GreekBlogging
    @GreekBlogging 5 років тому

    Loved listening to your tour. I had a Bukh 10hp one cylinder diesel in my old Folkboat 25'. It was a bugger to start from cold or even in the cold. I solved the problem by fixing a glowplug across the air intake. Heating the cold air before it went into the engine. It was much easier to start and caught after the second revolution instead of the 5-6 cycle. It made a big difference and a simple modification... I think the lack of engine power could be your prop as my Bukh pushed my 3 ton Wooden Folkboat very well, If you can give me your prop dim and model of yacht I'll check it against what I know about Bukh's.
    I listened to that fact that you were a well travelled back packer and believe we may have crossed paths about 2 years ago. I was driving a hire car with truck drivers in it when we collected one driver on the M4 roundabout (England) near Swindon and also picked up a hitchiker who was on her way to Bristol... Was that you?
    Best of Luck

    The Grinde is a very special boat, from the nordic design mecca Danmark. From the seventies, and its a kind off Colin archer on steroids. With high Rigg, superior build quality and total seaworthy. The Grinde is bigger then its 27 foot imply. They were so not common here in Sweden, but believe, you noticed them.... So modern, sturdy and still elegant.... keep on the good work!
