Great, quick, simple, informative video. Thanks for the tips. Very useful. I have a new bike that was in storage for about 20 years. I think the brake pads might be hard and dry from age and need replacing. I might try some of your cleaning and adjustment suggestions first, however.

Hey, thanks for your comment. First of all I think that you are being brave cycling in the storm and I hope you're ok. It's hard to know what happened during that storm but have a look at your pads. Maybe some debris got stuck in them. Clean the rim, replace the pads if necessary and hopefully you will be able to enjoy peaceful rides again. I hope this helps. Let me know if you find what caused the squeaking.
I frequently have to cycle in a storm and all this tips that are straight to the point are so very very useful I've recently started riding an electric trike I've sorted the front brakes I've just got to sort the back now there in the middle of the bike not as brake blocks how do I do this as it was a second hand bike there's no instructions
I was thinking it was just a coincidence coz I went through the same thing today. What an embarrassing moment it was. Those squeaking sound and people turning around. positive note it did worked better than a horn.
Very good video thank you. But what if the bike is brand new? My son’s bike was bought new from the bike shop by his grandparents when they visited and it has squeaked since day one! It’s been driving me mental and I should probably have taken it back and made them fix it but if a bike has sat still for a long time, can it still wear the pads ie rubber fatigue?
Hi and thanks for watching the video! I understand your frustration with the squeaking bike. Even if a bike is brand new, it can still have issues like squeaky brakes. Unfortunately, without actually looking at the bike and conducting a proper diagnosis, offering additional advice wouldn't be fair, as it would be purely based on theoretical assumptions. Consider taking it to your nearby bike shop where they can assess and address the problem accurately. I hope this helps and good luck with sorting this out.
Got a brand new bicycle and I'm a complete noob so I'm not sure what's going on. Not only there's a loud squeak when I hit the breaks, there's intense squeaking on both wheels when just pedaling normally, the wheels themselves squeak loudly on rotation. It's been doing that since my first test drive, been using it daily and after a week it's still present, if anything it's worse now than it was initially. My father insists on it being a "give the breaks time to adjust" thing but it quite literally has been getting worse as I said. I use it to go to work which is a 30 minute ride, so I've already spent like close to 8 hours on top this bike, surely it would have been fixed by now. I paid almost 800€ for this bike and it sounds like a damn rusty playground swing, any suggestions? (Have disk brakes, don't know if that helps)
Hey, thanks for reaching out, and sorry for the delayed response - November was a bit of a whirlwind. I'm sorry to hear about your brake troubles. It's a bit tricky to diagnose without seeing the bike, but here's a suggestion: spin your wheel and see if it turns smoothly. If it's making a squeaky noise and not spinning well, the brake pads might not be even on the rotor and you might need to adjust the caliper. I have a video here on how to do this: ua-cam.com/video/J8OsyIOovbA/v-deo.html If that doesn't do the trick, it's probably a good idea to visit your local bike shop for advice. You can also check my video on troubleshooting squeaky disc brakes here: ua-cam.com/video/qQ_YIXhTGU0/v-deo.html. Let me know if you figure out what's causing the issue. Good luck!
@@cyclemaintenanceacademy Hey, many thanks for the reply. Have planned to go visit a local bike shop tomorrow! Appreciate your tips and assistance, have a great day!
No need of any alcohol, use a clean dry cloth and wipe the rim with pressure where the brake pad contacts. It worked all the time for me. Wipe it so much that it's smooth enough.
Hi, thanks for the comment and sharing your tip with others. Isopropyl alcohol just makes it easier because it helps to disolve the dirt and rubber compound making it easier to clean.
Found out my brakes were installed very high along the slide, and were rubbing the tires when engaged. Learned how to adjust my brake pads so that they're only touching the aluminum rim
Hi, and thanks for your comment. Great to hear you figured that out! Keep up the great work on learning how to maintain your bike! Let me know if you need any further tips.
Ive done everything except replace the rim and i still have brake squeal. Any suggestions? Hi, what a journey you went through and still no success. It's a tricky one, the squeal sound is a vibration and all the brakes vibrate but usually not enough for us to hear it. You did well to cross off the potential reasons of high pitch vibrations. The only other thing I can suggest is to replace your brake calipers for a better quality ones. Let us know if this helps
Do you have an update? Of course a new rim is not needed in case of squealing. A true(d) aluminum rim, even a clean one, should be sanded (sand paper 120), then brushed and wiped. Same goes with brake pads. I did notice you checked it in your list, but it is certainly worth doing again.
@@kottelkannim4919 I gave up and gave the bike with the squeaky wheel As is. I tried a different rim and had the same problem so i was fed up with it. Do you think the Rims when They are almost fully Worn are designed to squeal?
@@EVO1087R A fully worn rim is a rim whose braking surface is concave. The extent of this phenomenon could be measured. A rim that reached such a critical state should be discarded. Hey, this sounds frustrating and squeaky rim brakes is tricky problem. If you tried everything then the next step would be replacing your current brake calipers with better quality ones. Let us know if you manage to get rid of the squeaky noise.
I have the second problem. I removed the shredded metals but they came back. I think I might be going a bit too fast on the bike. Where are these aluminum bits coming from?
Hi and thanks for the question. The aluminium bits that contaminate the pads come from your rim. When you brake the rubber compound on the pads wear but so does the rim. I hope this helps.
@@cyclemaintenanceacademy Is there a solution for that? Or is it just an effect of going fast? so there's no avoiding it? I went about 42 km/h, I wanted to go faster but got scared the bike would fall apart.
Hi there, thanks for your question. Hand sanitisers differ from isopropyl alcohol as they usually contain moisturising ingridients, thickening agents and fragrance which could leave a residue on the rim.
Hi Cathy. That's frustrating. Did you try to set the pads in an angle so that when you pull the break the front of the pad touches the rim first? Let us knw how you got on

Hi, and thanks for sharing your opinion. While changing brake pads might seem like a quick fix, sometimes cleaning or adjusting the pads can improve their performance and extend their lifespan. It's always worth considering different options depending on the situation. Sometimes, a little maintenance can go a long way before replacing parts. If you do go the replacement route, you're right that brake pads are relatively cheap and easy to change!
