I loved this video. You are a great ambassador for Newfoundland and Canada! Remembering my two rides to "the Rock" I had nothing but smiles throughout. The ferry crossings have caused me to think "the adventure never begins until the ferry is boarded. " And in going to Newfoundland, one meets the world's friendliest people. To anyone reading this who has not been to Newfoundland, you really need to go there. Beautiful scenery to be sure, but the people make the trip worthwhile. Thanks Jim!
Thank you Richard. I am seriously thinking of staying on the island next year and doing all the provincial and municiple campgrounds, out of the way towns etc. Maybe a 2-3 week guided tour of the island as well. I've long distanced myself enough for a couple of years. Time to enjoy more camping and camp cooking.
@@OldGuyonaBike I can understand the long-distance exhaustion... if not burnout. And if you do all of Newfoundland, there is always Labrador. Between those two bits of territory, you could be busy for a while. Both beautiful, remote and... not really so far away.
@@richardmourdock2719 Labrador is in the workd. There is one provincial park over there. I loved my 2022 trip because I made up my mind where I was going on a day to day or 3 days at the most. I found I had too much planned this ride. Then getting stuck in Utah did not help. Shorter rides and more real camping is what I need and want.
Last year we rode from Florida to Maine, and we took the Cape May- Lewes ferry from Delaware to New Jersey. It was my first time taking the ST-1300 on a ferry. It was quite the experience. Very rough seas to the point where I went down to the garage to check if the bike was still upright. To my surprise almost every motorcycle there had the owner next to it fearing the same. No bike tipped over but we did reach New Jersey in heavy rain. Great video, brought back memories.
@@OldGuyonaBike We were told it's not necessary to tie down the bikes as it was only about an hour and a half ride. I don't recall if they actually had any tie downs on the ferry or not, but I don't think they did. That's why the other riders an I were worried about the bikes when it got rocky. On the bike itself, I would use the handlebars and the passenger grab rails to secure it. Never thought about the engine guards, good tip! Stay safe brother. @@MRMRS2wheeler I'll take a look tonight. It's never the duration of the crossing, it's the wind and the waves. I've been stuck once for 52 hours out in the Gulf of St. Lawrence on the 7 hour run due to high winds. They could not manuever safely into port. Now, they just cancel crossings if the weather predicts ceertain wind speeds and you have to find onshore accommodations.
@@OldGuyonaBike Wow, 52 hours is insane. Water crossings can be risky. At the end of the day, it's all part of the adventure and makes for good stories and great memories.

That's really interesting about the soil policy. I wonder what the reasoning is? To prevent the spread of endangered species? Anyway, great diary as always. I first found your channel because I dream of one day riding to Newfoundland, so getting to see the ferry ride in detail was very informative.
The soil policy is to protect mainland, mostly Prince Edward Island and New Brunswick from the potatoe blight that is on Newfoundland. It's not as big a problem as it once was but they are still very careful. Newfoundland is a great place to ride and camp. I do hope you will be able to get over someday.
when I went to Newfoundland we had reservations but we were going to be late because of a rain storm so we called ahead. they lets us board arriving 20 minutes before they left. we where very luck. we had our bikes hosed down leaving hahaha
I once arrived late due to a tractor trailer loosing a load of frozen turkeys when it overturned. When I arrived at the ticket booth I was told I was bumped to the morning crossing. Saw the ferry was still at the dock and said "What about that one?" Agent said "Go!" Deck hand was holding the safety rail as I boarded and the ship was moving before I got the first tie down on. That was too close.
Hey Jim, I can't remember how many times I have crossed on the ferry to the island over the past 45 years. A couple were rough to say the least. My last trip was on the MV Blue Puttees, which was awesome because I had a cabin. Looking forward to following the rest of your trip. Enjoy your week.
I usually don't know my exact date of departure during the summer until after all the cabins are booked. As a solo rider I hate spending the money too lol. This fall, coming back I was on the new ferry. Nice ship. I got a "sleeping pod". 2 bunks in a closet. Will talk about that much later on.
@@bobberguy1 the restaurant at the bus depot in Amherst, Nova Scotia was actually called the "Terminal Lunch" at one point. I don't know if the burgers actually killed you or not.
Hey Jim how do you like riding a full dresser like the Goldwing I have a 2017 RoadGlide and had an 2008 electric glide before that. I have always felt that once you go full dresser you never go back
The ST1300 had great weather protection and lots of luggage but the Goldwing is just a bit better. Although I still need to get a little leg room, the seat with the backrest is great. ST perfect when I was 55 and no trailer, Goldwing perfect at 70+ with trailer.
The pants were my 15 year old First Gear mesh pants. The grey jacket was bought a the same time. The mesh jacket will meet it's dimiss in Maine in a few days. They have faded in the sun after all these years and that morning light gave them a different look. Still fit although they are tight at the start of riding season.
Most provinces do have a senior rate for their own citizens and there should be a discounted season pass good for all parks' day fees. Ontario has tiered parks as well so some are more expensive than others. One of the most expensive park systems in the country.

It's been a while since I did a walkabout when on board. Thought it about time.
I LOVE ferry rides!

Were there tie-downs for the bikes On the ST I always just took the black plastic engine guard covers on and attached to the engine guards.

Great content if ever in Baddeck again stay at Cabot Trial Motel cheap clean and friendly!!
I usually am just passing thru Cape Breton or camping on the Cabot Trail. I will put that motel on my resources list. Thanks.
A "terminal breakfast" sounds kind of final!
I was wondering if anyone would catch that.
I was thinking the same. Kinda like "Last Supper"!

Wow , wonder what a seasons pass in ontario will get me ? Right now with tax I'm paying about $40. 00 per night .

Way to expensive for my budget. My pension isn't that high.
It is one of the things we have to contend with living on an island. Flying off is even worse. Stick to travel and camping closer to home.
