Farewell to the AMAZING 1938-era trains on the Isle of Wight

- January 2021 is the final call for the vintage 1938 London Underground Stock trains that run on the Isle of Wight in England. Having served the public across ten decades, they'll retire on 3rd January 2021. These unique trains are special for a few reasons: they're by far the oldest stock running scheduled services for a Train Operating Company on the passenger network, they're the second in three generations of veteran Tube trains transported across the Solent to run on this unique island, and they're also the trains my dad learned to drive when he joined London Transport as a young(er!) man - and they were elderly trains even then!

I hope you'll join me for a final goodbye to these sublime trains, and enjoy a ride on the Isle of Wight's little railway network between Ryde Pier Head and Shanklin. Normal service resumes in January 2021 for my channel!
This video was filmed in September 2020, during relaxed public travel restrictions in England.
A safe, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you all; I hope you enjoy this little New Year bonus video!

You too Paul
a very happy new year for you too Paul from San Francisco, California!
Happy new year Paul. It has always been a pleasure watching your videos. I wish you all the best for 2021.
Should have made the cat the thumbnail. Pretty sure you would have gotten 10 million views lol.
Anyway, happy new year.
Absolutely smashing video! So sad that I never got to take a ride on one of these units before they go out of service but what we do have is these amazing videos to remember what it was and would be like
I hope they will be preserved
The station cat is gorgeous! And famous now thanks to Paul 😸
A Beautiful audio-visual love letter to a train. Trains such as this one are not just important for their engineering alone, but because they are evocative pieces of our shared history as a society. What stories these carriages might tell if they could speak - the myriad of humans that it has mundanely, and dutifully carried around London and the Isle of Wight, touching each in a small but meaningful way. Thank you for documenting this in such a lovely and personal way.
Love letter to a train! Nicely said :)
This comment is all kinds of wonderful 🙂
Paul: here's 20 minutes of train facts!
.
Also Paul: look, a kitty!
.
This isn't the content we deserve, but it is the content we need right now.
I will miss these trains. Have travelled on them for years; they even took me to school.
Being in Canada during this pandemic, it’s a bit sad that I will never see these 38s in operation on the IOW. Nonetheless, thank you Paul for all the wonderful journeys throughout 2020. It’s been a bit of a mental struggle for some of us during pandemic, but being able to travel with you has been uplifting in ways you can’t imagine. All the best to you and all the viewers for a better 2021!
They were rust buckets/death traps and realistically needed replacing for the last 20yrs, glad we've got new-ish trains. This is the island we never get anything new here except the floating bridge and that was a massive c*ck up.
Great video, good to record the old girls before they went - the only Island transport system to make you feel like you were going at 80 mph when in fact you were only doing 40! Odd to hear Shanklin described as a 'village'... you must be one of them there 'grockles' lol. Keep up the good work.
I live on the island. There is a train track almost next to my house in Lake. It takes about 15 minutes to walk to the nearest station. I am lucky for being able to experience these trains.
Although now the 1938 tube stock is now gone in the pages of British Rail history, its legacy will live on straight from home in 'Train Sim World 2'! (btw Greetings from America, and Happy 2021!)
This video brings back memories!
When I came back home (Bonchurch) on leave in the RAF after some years away from the Island in the late 60's, I was most disappointed not be be greeted with the old 'Puffing Billies; to take me to Ventnor Station, but was greeted by this old rattle trap ex London tube train instead, which got me as far as Shanklin, and then a bus to Bonchurch.
Not sure, but I believe tube trains were chosen because they would fit the narrower tracks, and would go through the various tunnels without getting stuck?.....:)
Many times I travelled on the steamers from Ventnor to other places in earlier years, lean out of the window and get a lump of smut in my eye for my trouble...happy days!....:)
By the way: the cat was the star of the video!
Loved the face as it was sleeping in the sun like it was thinking this the life 😂😺
I swear that's the Cat I saw when I was on the Iow. Was a sweet cat.
I was just going to say that cat is ALWAYS THERE
I guess you mean the slow cat - not the Fast one at the end!
@@owen1994 we love going to Brading via the train because we get to hang out with him.
Sandown used to have a "railway cat" too.
They are awesome 😅
I am so glad I took my son on these a few times before they took these out of service. I have so many memories of them from my day trips from Portsmouth.
We took my son on that steam train too. He loved it.
I had the joy of riding on a restored train of this stock on the Northern Line when visiting London back in the late 1990's. Thanks for sharing this.
I love the isle, went there for Convenience 60 years ago. NOW living in Sydney, have been for over 50 years. Love traveling with you, you are so lucky to be able to do so. I think I have watched them all and loving the travel from my arm chair. HAPPY TRAVELING
I went on the British rail class 483 a few times and the island line signaling is controlled by Ryde at Johns road signal box with a mixture of colour light and semaphore. With line between Heading and Sandown was double track from the 30's to when the br class 483 are brought over between 1989 and 1992.
Hey, Paul, you’re making cat videos. Thank you for hanging in there over a tortuous year while still providing us with interesting and varied content. Hope for a better and successful 2021!
I am Brazilian and I think the United Kingdom is beautiful.
Paul, I really enjoyed this. What I like about your videos is your voice-over. I appreciate your objectivity and professionalism. The way your narrative flows shows clearly that you’ve put some thought into composing what you are going to say. You have that rare ability of providing sufficient detail so as to retain our interest, without bombarding us with endless technical details, the unfortunate trait of so many other videos produced by rail/travel enthusiasts. It’s a genuine pleasure to listen to. I look forward to watching your future exploits in the world of rail and air.
I grew up on the Isle of Wight, and while I’ve no desire to go back there, it’s things like the old train journey, the hovercraft and the ‘quirks’ that you don’t appreciate until later. End of an era indeed
What beautiful architecture! I love old vintage rolling stock. Thank you for taking us on this journey with you.
Rode these lovely trains back in September 2012 after being on a Hovercraft for the first time in my life. One of these days that will always be remembered very fondly☺️
Thanks for creating such a great video and all the memories it resurrects. I’d forgotten about the jump seats but can now recall riding on them as a child. You have also reminded me of the leather hoops hanging down from the hand rails. The original trains also had leather straps to pull up and lower the windows in the doors at the end of the carriages. The figure in the wall was of a guy at Shanklin who would spend his day carrying passengers luggage to the hotels in Shanklin. We also used to do that with our go carts to get pocket money during the summer holidays. it was a brilliant way to improve our customer skills as we’d chat to the holiday makers as we pushed their luggage.
Thank you Paul. Very interesting about your dad driving these trains. Counting the days months and years until us Aussies can get overseas again to enjoy the likes of train travel on the Isle of Wight
Thanks, Paul! Took me back to mid 70's and 80's when I was in Isle of Wight!
Thank you. As a train buff, wrong word, adorer would be more like it, it was a pleasure to watch and please, keep on rockin' on the rails!!.
Beautiful video
Have only just come across this series
Exceptionally impressed
Thank you
They had character unlike modern tube trains!
Yeah. 1938 stock >S stock, 1992 stock and 1996 stock and 2009 stock imo. The former two trains I despise
This is what people will be saying 40 years from now when the S7s and 2009 stock are replaced, and what people said 40 years ago when 1923 stock was being replaced
I last went to IOW when I was 13 years old in 1982, and travelled on the 1923 tube stock. I do remember the 1938 stock used on the Bakerloo Line, and briefly on the Northern Line in the late 80s and maybe early 90. Used to love the smell and sounds of these old tube trains, especially the 'ding ding'... thanks forthis great video :-)
Very good info👍🏻👍🏻 very surprising that this kind of trains exist in the world! Truly amazing! Hats off to the team who are maintaining the entire system👍🏻👍🏻❤️
One of your very best, Paul. The mentions of your dad are particularly touching.
I have long wondered about the utility services for Ryde Pier Head station. Are there sewage pipes, for example, attached to the pier? And gas? Electricity and data can just go along cables, but sewage and gas require pipes. And sewage, presumably, needs to be pumped.
That’s a thought, hadn’t really thought about the utilities. There are toilets at the end of the pier as well as a Costa, etc, and of course there once was a large entertainment pavilion at the end. There are pipes which can be seen running down the pier which I presume are waste water pipes. As you suggest, the waste must be pumped surely.
A great vid! I remember visiting in the summer of 2006, on a Saturday. The uneven 2 train service was in operation (2 x 4 car trains) which left one 2 car unit spare. Imagine my surprise that afternoon as it also entered service and a 3 train service was run for the rest of the afternoon! Can you imagine that happening on the mainland?.....An unadvertised extra in service. The Up train had to wait at Sandown for the Down train to get there so as to pass, and the Up train left a few mins late but it was possible to run the 3 train service. Happily i had my vid camera with so have film of this happening......Was it a one off ot semi-regular in the summer months? Back in 2006, five trains were fit for service and one was being stripped, the others that had been there had been disposed of by then......happy days!
I live in Ryde and have used the 'old' and this 'new' stock on many occasions. Looking forward to all of the new trains and enhancements and hoping the line may one day be extended back to Ventnor. Ventnor lost a lot of visitors once the old steam railway service ceased in 1966 and the restoration of a train service there would be great. Well done Paul on a fantastic and informative video. I glad you got to meet the lovey station cat at Brading who will greet any new arrivals. Really appreciate your homework in the commentary. Top marks. Tony 👍
As an retired London Underground Train Operator, (Moterman) these were one of the first train I work on, good memories? Well at 6foot it was a bit tight in the cab, the seat was terrible, the controls were heavy to use, freezing cold in winter baking not in summer.... GOOD TIMES 😂
My dad has a few stories about Westinghouse brake failures and coasting on the seat of his pants to the next station! Knowing gradients helps with route knowledge...!
😂 The ups and downs of Train Driver... I ended up becoming a Instructor Operator (never wanted a management job) Did 41years worked on most lines, Text train operator on the Jubilee line, new rule book project, Valuing time team building sessions, Waterloo and City project... the list goes on.
Retired at 57 HAPPY DAYS.
What a fantastic record of the old Tube stock on the Isle of Wight. Many thanks for posting and best wishes for 2021
Kudos to them keeping these running in a sea water environment for so long.
Here in NYC, the conductor (guard) has a buzzer to communicate with the driver, two short buzzes is the “ready to go” signal” (I believe the driver has a buzzer as well, though both also have radios if the situation requires more verbal communication.
Happy new year, Paul. Nice video and thank heavens this railway was saved from the Beeching Axe, especially given the patronage numbers on some of the stations! Take care
I’ll miss these trains. Sadly, I never got to travel with them
Me too i was going to visit next year,
Sadly i wont get to ride one
I would liken it to traveling in your living room, with windows that open.
Epping to Ongar line - pay attention!
EPPING TO ONGAR
Some are being scrapped but one is going to stay and be restored and be sent to England in the national rail museum in island line livery
Thank you for all of the wonderful videos. I hope you have a fantastic new year, are happy, stay healthy, and get to travels loads more. I loved the little tidbit of nostalgia about you dear old dad. What a wonderful memory for you.
went down twice this year and got the hovercraft over. these trains were built to last. great film paul.
Unique stock on a unique railway. Happy New Year to you and all of your subscribers.
Been on these trains a few times over my lifetime. Going back over to the Isle next summer. Will miss these little trains.
Awesome sir , glad you showed these beautiful British heritage railway line for a change, wish you too A Very Happy and Healthy New Year 2021, safe travels 👍
Fabulous video! I don't think I realised how lucky I was to travel on this line so frequently as a child. My family used to take regular holidays to the IOW, sometimes up to 4 a year. Each time I'd enjoy the noises and feel of this beautiful railway. I haven't been to the Island since 2012 and even then it was looking incredibly run down. I hope these new class 484s and some development in 2021 return it to some of its former glory. I definitely plan to visit and be a tourist again!
Ps The cat made the video!
THis one has lots of nostalgia for me too. I barely remember these trains, being a little too young to have seen much of them on the Victoria line, but the next generation had a lot in common with them, including sliding the doors into the double-glazing. I always thought that was really cool. :) That view of the end-of-carriage doors might be bringing back some memories, but they're all, "I've seen that *somewhere*," with no context. It might have been from my one trip to the Isle of Wight in my teens.
Thank you for sharing this vintage gem with us. A wonderful way to end in 2020. Happy New Year!!
Thank you for chronicling this. I’ve been fascinated with transportation overall, so to see these awesome trains is such a treat. Thank you for sharing! Love all of your videos.
Thanks Paul you brought back old memories of when I was at boarding school in the Isle of Wight and we travelled on the old steam trains when we arrived at Ryde on the ferry from Portsmouth. This was in the late 50's so I go back a long time.
The isle of wight steam railway is one of the best heritage railways anywhere, even better then my railway.
I had the good fortune to have been in all the signal boxes on the island line when they were still in use... A long time ago.
The new trains and the upgrade to the railway will transform the line...
Nice to see some of the old stock will be preserved. Happy New Year.
Great video Paul, unfortunately I’ve missed my last chance to ride these trains, I absolutely love the Island, especially in the autumn with all the walks and falling leaves! You should try out the coastal Shanklin - Lake - Sandown walk along the top of the cliff - there’s one point where you can see the track close up and even cross it! There is also a beach path that runs parallel to the cliff path. All the best for 2021 :)
Magic to ride on a Bakerloo train again !!
Greetings from Zanzibar! I've enjoyed watching your videos this year. Looking forward to more travel content in 2021!
Thank you! Happy new year 👍🏻
Great video and what an adorable little kitty.
Thank you so much! That was so enjoyable. Something I would not have seen, if not for you. Keep up the good work. In these times it is so nice to travel along with you.
Thank for this and all your enjoyable reports over the year. These elegant trains were designed to a very high standard indeed. They have wonderfully integrated interiors with grab rails integrated beautifully into the seat ends, the lovely art deco grille above the end doors and, as you point out, the doors retracting into glazed pockets. It was good that they were painted in a dignified London Transport like red livery (rather than some jangly corporate scheme). Such charm.
Best wishes for 2021!
Oh, how I agree with you. Beautifully designed - rather than the assault on the senses that are modern public transport interiors.
Mr. Lucas: you're an absolute DUDE! Thanks for all your great content throughout this year. Have a top new year and stay safe! Here's hoping we can travel again normally next year! Take it easy, pal! :)
Thanks for all the wonderful content in 2020, Paul! A healthy happy 2021 to all!
I spent many very happy summers in Seaview, just a short walk along the coast from Ryde. I remember the hovercraft and the former underground carriages, s well as visiting Brading and traveling on the Isle of Wight Steam Railway - a novel experience for an eleven year old in 1976!
To think that my GREAT GRANDMOTHER was in primary school when this train entered service. Now in an era with 5G and Out of Solar System spacecrafts, these trains are still running. (Well not anynore). Rest in Peace
When I was 13 years old I was skipping school with my best friend and we were hanging around Lake train station. We wondered what the big sign W meant, and some old bloke came up to us and said "That W means WATER." He went on a bit of a rant about how everything these days is "all bloody digital". I was 13 at the time and the year was 1999 so I just took his word for it. Looking back now, since it's an electric line, the W probably was a reminder for the driver to blow the Whistle for the pedestrian crossing.
Correct, and Lake station was constructed years after steam services ended.
Indeed - W means whistle (and that’s the same on the mainland too, for all trains - most of which actually have horns! Still a whistle board)
Excellent video - remember riding on those trains as a child
Hi just found your channel thanks for helping me to stay sane in these crazy times. Hope you are happy and healthy.
Thanx Paul, a great video leaving tears in my eyes! Even though I've lived in North London all my 59 years, the Isle Of Wight is my second home and l love tube trains. I live just across the road from the Victoria Line depot. The end of the 1938 stock has left me feeling sad, it wont be the same with the 1978 stock. Thanx for your wonderful videos mate.
OK, so now I'm feeling nostalgic for something I hadn't known about until just now!
Happy New Year, Paul! And thanks for letting us tag along vicariously on your travels.
I also want to specifically thank you for your focus on some of the details. Great stuff.
I hope 2021 opens up for you (and all of us). Safe travels.
It will be sad when these Trains go- A lot of memories as a child going on holiday in the Isle of Wight. But I suppose we’ve got to look forward to the future with new trains and I believe has good facilities on as well!
I am impressed by this station built partly on the sea. The Isle of Wight contains many treasures
Excellent video, Paul. The 38s will be missed by many of us. They’ve given us amazing service over many years. Used to use them frequently on the Bakerloo Line in the 1980’s.
The class 483, aka 1938 tube stock, speak volumes for the quality of engineering for the 1930's philosophy of being built to last. Who would have thought, 82 years after they were first introduced that they would finally be retired
Great video, memories for an Aussie who travelled the Bakerloo line quite a few times....
Thanks for the rail tour. It’s always a pleasure to watch your travels ! Have a safe and Happy New Year !
Your narration & scenic capture are spot on.
Also at Ryde St Johns is the signal box, also original to the line and still controls semaphores as well as the entire line! making the line feel even more vintagey!
Happy New Year Paul...! Thanks for taking us along on this wonderful ride...!
Another great video Paul - you put many television presenters to shame!
Does anyone know why 'older' tube trains had a more noticeable whine on acceleration - and that occasional 'ticking' noise when standing at the station?
These are some of the London sounds I remember as a kid - oh, and the tube station smell of Jeyes Fluid!
Cheers Paul - thanks for another great year of videos. Many blessings to you and yours for a Happy New Year from a Texas fan!
Hi Paul, Happy New Year to you. The beginning of your video brought back memories that I had long forgotten. Prior to the Humber Bridge opening, the river was crossed by paddle steamer; as a small child I remember going on the train down a very long jetty and getting off at a station that was at the walkway to the ferry. The station was called New Holland Pier and it is long gone. I remember it feeling rickety and the gaps between the boards!
Hi Paul and a happy new year! Thanks for this beautiful video farewell to the 1938 London Underground Stock trains on the Isle of Wight. Geoff Marschall did also a farewell video here, but you added some more historical facts of the IOW railways! All interesting to know!
Can't wait to see where 2021 will take you. Happy new year to you too, Paul!
I have to get these trains to school everyday and even though they are loud and uncomfy they have been a big part of my life, I was born on the island and have lived here all my life, and they are a big part of our island, I think they will be missed by many. even though they can be a bit of a pain sometimes haha
How apt that I started watching this on 3rd January, the day they retired. I remember seeing these when I visited the IoW way back and they looked old then. Great video
I like your videos very very much and I want to wish you a happy Happy New Year as well to all
Enjoyable video--it's just a pity that the windows apparently haven't been washed since 1938 either.
All the best to you and yours Paul. Be safe 🍻👍🏼
Thanks so much Paul for this video , and may you have a GREAT 2021
It has become quite frustrating not being able to travel because of the pandemic, however watching your excellent travel vlogs has really helped me to (at least partially) satiate the travel bug in me. Keep up the awesome work, and I hope you have a happy and prosperous new year!
thanks for helping us through 2020 Paul, stay safe and I look forward to a new year of content!
Looking forward to 2021 and following you Paul. Happy 2021.
Paul,
Happy New Year to you, as well.
What a charming link to the past, and it's good
to know that the rail line will continue to operate.
"the old order changeth, yielding to the new...."
Cheers,
Rik Spector
Superb. Great efforts Paul and stimulating footage
That was a really great video. Probably my favorite so far. I rather like how the old trains get repurposed and stay valid in these modern times. Thank you for posting.
You're right about the sound of the trains bringing back memories.
I enjoyed hearing your historical knowledge Paul!
Great report. There is no mistaking the sounds from the old London Tube trains. Looking forward to seeing your journeys in 2021. Sat safe.
Hi Paul, New subscriber here, I do not normally do trains but what got me about this video was your presentation, knowledge and real enthusiasm for your subject, stood out a mile! Thanks for sharing.
All the best for 2021, Paul!
Interesting video Paul. As a child I remember us travelling from Newport to Cowes in June 1961 on the old steam-hauled line and my mother remarking how filthy the trains were inside. I've used the line from Ryde Pierhead to Shanklin a few times over the past forty five years. Both the older 1920s stock and the 1938 trains gave very bumpy rides. It'll be interesting to see if the new ex-District Line trains ride the line better. It's a shame that the infrastructure and trains have been allowed to deteriorate over the past few years. Let's hope the 2021 improvements address that.
Hey Paul , I just got around to watching this video , and absolutely loved it having been to the IOW in the early 70’s . Keep up the good work mate !
Whether it's your videos or content by Noel, Dennis, Sam or Jeb, watching new videos and rewatching old ones let me hang on to what little sanity I have left, having been cooped up at home for nearly a year. I miss travelling. My wife and I had to cancel 5 trips in 2020. Happy New Year and I wish you lots of maskless travel in the future.
Really glad that this line and the 1938 stock are preserved virtually in Train Simulator and Train Sim World, since I can drive/ride the line whenever I want (and I don’t have to deal with mechanical problems!)
