- The Island Railway to the Coast - Newport to Sandown Part 1 Isle of Wights Railways
Join me as I take a look at one of the Isle of Wight lost railways, the route from Newport to Sandown.
In part one of this Disused Railway Walk I take a look at Shide Tunnel, Chalk Quarry and Station.
Then it's onto Blackwater Station, Merstone Junction Station before finishing off at Horringford Station

Hi Ant, another all round excellent video, looking forward to the next. Your enthusiasm is entertainig us and keeping you fit at the same time. A whole production team combined in one. Thank you.
What a fantastic walk. The weather scenery and filming excellent. Beautiful place. Thank you Ant. As always …. outstanding video.
Beautiful video, Ant. Thank you very much! 👍🏻😀
Thanks for watching Frank
We spent some great days at the chalk pit in Shide, when the kids were little, I haven't been there since they grew up, so thanks for including it in the video.
Thanks very much for watching I'm pleased you enjoyed it
Thanks for another cracking trip so lovely and well put together,I always stop. What am doing and focus on it 😊
Another great one Ant. I do love the interleaving of the old with the new. Thanks for sharing.
love the video , walked that line many times over the years.
one mistake the train from Merstone to Ventnor did not go thought Wroxall only Godshill and Whitwell.
Very good scenery - pity it had to close - thanks for sharing Ant 🙂🚂🚂🚂
@17:26 Very good Ant!!! 😀🚂🚂🚂
love it Ant keep em coming mate Thank you.
Great video Ant. Thanks cobber. Cheers!
Great video Ant...
Thanks very much Trevor
Another lovely video, Ant. Lovely stations. Thank goodness we have the isle of white steam railway!
another excellent video what a lovely journey it must have been in it's heyday i would love to see it reopen again I am sure it would be well used do we know why it closed could it have been mothballed
Most lines on the island were not profitable and relied mainly on seasonal traffic. Then the introduction of buses spelt the end of nearly all the island lines. This is what most nostalgists fail to understand.
Thank you for the super video from the Isle of Wight. Haven't been there since 1959 and the video makes me want to return.
We had a day trip to the Island while on holiday in Southsea 64 years ago and took the train from Ryde Pierhead to Ventnor. It was the first time I can remember hearing a Westinghouse brake pump chugging away on number 33 "Bembridge" and what was left of the railways on the Island was all steam operated.
The IoW steam railway have two locos that I have worked with so you've given me a great excuse to go and see them! Also to take a bike and ride some trails and see what's left of the track beds for myself.
I just hope we can get some decent weather as it looks great in the video!
Keep the videos going Ant, you're doing a great job.
Another great video. You implied that Shide station building was still there. It was demolished and a garage built on the site.
Great vid Ant, good to see a lot is still visible.👍👍👍👍
Cheers Bob thanks for watching
Thanks for the video today. Another walk into the past. See you on the next. Cheers Ant!
Cheers Martin. Part 2 shall be hot on it's heels
Yes you are right. At 20:50 those gates are used to create a funnel for transferring livestock from one field to another. Looks like they are still in use. 🇨🇦
Nice cross-country walk. Difficult to imagine that this section of the railway would have carried many passengers. Looking forward to the next stage.
Thanks very much for watching. Next part will follow up next 😊
Likewise.
Nice video thanks for all your work.
Ant, you really seem to enjoy making videos, and they are extremely enjoyable. But have a question: Do you consider "exercise" as a side benefit from all the walking you do???
Until your Isle of Wight video series I never knew how beautiful it was, what a place to live.
Hi, it always makes me think what people must have thought back then, what does the future hold for this place and thoughts like this.
It's a lot like the Derwent and Ladybower reservoirs. They wouldn't have known what would have become
So good, evocative music and new and old views, can't wait for the next episode.
Another great vid Ant . It's awful but I have never walked any of the old lines , so bad . Must do it .
Guessing you avoided the tricky identifying of the railway in the center of Newport , it's a dual carriageway . All completely wiped from the face of the earth .
Great video ant i am going to shanklin next year so going to walk old lines
Brilliant Oliver I hope you enjoy it. Thank you
I walked the old line back in the early 80's. If memory serves me correctly Merstone Junction was much more overgrown back then, with the now tarmacked path being nothing more than a narrow path through the undergrowth. The platforms were also very overgrown. Very nice to see them still there 40 years on from when I walked the line. Will make one correction to the info you gave regarding the line splitting at Merstone, the line that went off towards Godshill was not the same line that went to Wroxhall. The branch through Godshill went south to Whitwell, then through the tunnel you explored previously to Ventnor West station. Wroxhall was on the line that used to continue onwards from Shanklin westwards through Wroxhall, then through the much longer tunnel under St Boniface Down, emerging straight into the main Ventnor Station. (The old track bed from Shanklin to Wroxhall is a footpath itself, but sadly the long tunnel under the downs is now locked up very securely.
Superb brick bridge
Very good.
Thanks very much 😊
Forgot to ask: Do any of the rivers have enough "Fall" to have worked waterwheels in the past?
I think what tends to happen is that a separate watercourse is driven, with a minimal fall. By the time the wheel is reached there is sufficient drop to power the wheel. The water then forms a mill race to get back to the main river downstream.
@@johnspurgeon9083 My guess would be that Undershot and Breastshot were more common than overshot waterwheels. Have a good day...........
Great video. Such a shame they closed all the railway network down. Would be worth its weight in gold today. Lovely music as well. Who,s it by?
I feel quite tired after that lovely walk, ready for my bed now?! 🧐
Yes get some sleep part two will follow very soon 😉
A 'guy' is a stabilising wire rope support to the pole
I know I didn't really expect anyone to be living up there 😂
Ha ha - "Overhead Guy" is the guy rope holding the post
🤣🤣 thanks for watching
@@TrekkingExplorationMy Great aunt had a house on the hill a short way up from Cowes station so as a youngster I spent summers either on the beach or watching steam trains on this line from my bedroom window (mid 60's).
As I leave the island as a child I getting to know the island and find a lot about it. 🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺
If you looked carefully you would have seen the extant right of way boundary posts in the hedgerows.
Just a quick observation. Can you be a bit more slower with the camera. You seem to rush with some of the views. Especially when the viewer is trying to work out the old and new scenes .
Kind regards
Mark
The "Guy" that the sign refers to is a guy rope, or in this case, a cable.
I know it was a simple joke I didn't really expect to see anyone sat up there 😉
Did you know that the North Door of Newchurch Church remains closed as the Devil is supposed to have appeared there.
That's quite a scary story isn't it?
@TrekkingExploration ...Even before I found this out, I found this was a nssty place to be. Then there's the horse and carriage that dashes across the road at Knighton and just disappears.. The park at St Lawrence ( lovely station) was the site of a TB hospital and still people see apparitions of hospital garbed personnel wandering around. PS great hotel Old Park Hotel St Lawrence, gorgeous Victoriana, gardens overlooking the sea. Next to bird park. Looking forward to your next video!
@@railwaychristina3192 I'd better not make videos based on the Spooky stuff 😲
