Bonjour Dean, good job and good idea to check your clutch on the press. Problem could append on this double clutch and off course on single clutch it's damage on the disc center splin and ring.
It's appened when you bump the gearbox shaft in the disc center when you assembly the gearbox. The weight of the gearbox is very important and the bump is very heavy. The result is a twisted disk (impossibility to desengage) or spin (tooth) damage and a disk seized on the gearbox shaft. Same result disk doesn't desengage.
you could check that if you have time 🙂
    Again bravo .

Bent fingers on pressure plate means it’s not fully releasing/uneven clutch plate, usually overheated fingers someone’s been slipping the clutch or it was fitted incorrectly as in not tightening bolts diagonally and torqued up properly like rattling them down clockwise with gun 👍

Last weekend I swapped the clutch on my RX8, after removing the gearbox and clutch in a couple of hours it then took me 3 hours to get the gearbox back on, several failed attempts to get it in position I was ready to give up, sat down, had a cup of tea and chatted to a fellow owner, went back to it and the gearbox was on in 20 minutes, if it wasn't for the fact that it's an inanimate object I could of sworn I heard it say "what?" When it dropped in place. This was carried out in my drive, with axle stands a couple of ramps and a standard trolley Jack. I can fully sympathise with how frustrating it can be replacing a gearbox, at least you had physical help

So pleased for you, the engine rebuild alone was a huge job and then to have the clutch problem on top is a nightmare, I really felt your joy when that gear leaver went through the gate ! I have an old 911 and when I finally got to the bottom of an engine problem after two weeks of diagnostics the sense of joy/relief was indescribable.

Had a similar issue on a B7 RS4 last year. Replaced the master, then the external slave but just couldn’t get it in gear. The clutch had done under 20k miles since it was replaced about 5 years ago so we were convinced it wasn’t that.
After hours and hours of bleeding the only thing left was to try a new clutch and it cured it.
With the pressure bleeder connected it was fine but as soon as you turned it off you lost the ability to engage again.
    Wasted days 😫
Glad yours is resolved. Keep up the good work Dean 🙌🏻

  • @mick_6006
    @mick_6006 Рік тому

HI Dean, glad you got it sorted but sorry I didn't mention this earlier before you bought the clutch. The issue could still be clutch bleed and could still have it albeit you can now engage gear with a new clutch although clutch drag could return as it wears.
Many motorcyclist know of a problem bleeding a system with a near vertical pipe trying to put fluid in the top and push air out the bottom. Air always wants to float to the top. I spent hours trying to bleed a front bike brake recyling loads of fluid before i found out the secret. On such a system, it is best to reverse fill through the bleed nipple and a syringe until the fluid reaches the reservoir. That way you don't get the air block in the first place.
If you don't do this, there is a significant risk that fluid simply goes past the air bubble with a pressure fill leaving it in place or if pushing very hard on the pedal on the old method, the bubble can move down on the down stroke but just float back to the top again at the end of the pedal stroke. Never tried it on an already failed fill, you may need to drain it first and then refill from the bottom.

  • @LasseJOugaard

It not unheard of that multi-plate clutches in racecars and motorbikes you can have the friction discs stick to the flywheel and pressure plates. Especially if they've sat for a long time like over the winter break. Sometimes you can free them up by giving them a hard jolt which can be achieved by rocking or towing the car while in gear with the pedal depressed. I'm not convinced that is the problem you had, but could be worth a try next time.

Felt your excitement when the new clutch worked. Maybe the issue was the friction plates? From doing dirt bike builds myself the friction plates get soaked in oil for a rebuild. Maybe your old ones dried out and weren’t able to take in the gearbox oil so they weren’t able to slip? Just a hunch

Dean, I love messing around with my Triumph tr6 which I have owned for over 40 years. It has been very hard to get anybody to mess with the Lucas fuel injection. Take it to a modern garage and they’ll ask where you plug a lap-top in. The engine is a glorified Massey-Ferguson tractor engine. But it’s running perfectly now. But it’s given me a lot of headache. But this Audi, it’s just way too technical. But I’m sure you got a good nights sleep after you got it moving. Well done.
