Asking one piece to be realistic is pointless. It’s great because of how imaginative it is. Just the fact that oda can draw the series to the insane level he does defies reality itself.

The point of this is that I spent way too much time doing research before I decided magic metal that makes things do what I want.
The rule is, things don't need too match science. But the rules you do make should be consistent. People complain about the lastest star wars, in part because they ignore all world/rule building for the given universe. One Piece is wacky, but its world building seems consistent.
Making a setting thats less realistic but better reinforces the themes you're trying to tell would actually be a good video to make. In particular making it consistent and feel right despite not making sense is quite hard, and I'd appreciate a video on this subject.

something doesn't have to be realistic to be good??? i have no clue why someone would base their viewing of writing on how realistic something is if it's a fantasy and is supposed to be very different from our reality. unless something is supposed to be realistic you cannot judge it off that.
Suprisingly, i agree with a lot of your points. Its just easy to look at One Piece and call it unrealistic and nonsensical, but at the end of the day, thats kind of the point. Oda was directly inspired by childrens cartoons like Looney Tunes, so it makes sense that the world of OP doesnt operate on real life logic. Theres something very dreamlike about it all. If everything were explained perfectly, i think it would lose some of that mystery and vastness.. Like theres more to the world than jusy what relates to our main characters.
Which is why it's baffling when Oda suddenly decides that he's going to just give it a story with an eventual conclusion all these years later... C'mon Oda, we were happy in this nonsensical world of wacky and hilarious piracy. Imagine if the Looney Toons had the same logic. How would that work??? If he really wanted to make One Piece "immortal" he should've just done what the Looney Toons did...
@@ellugerdelacruz2555 we who's we, one piece was meant to have an eventual ending since the start I mean oda once stated that he always wanted to write a story with a epic conclusion were everything comes together for a final showdown
I think it’s important to mention that we’re seeing the WG from the perspective of Luffy, who is rebelling against it and is like the one in ten thousand pirate who has never looted anything. For the average Joe, the WG is doing a great job at keeping people safe from the rampant criminals who constantly threaten to kill them, and most of the Marine conscripts and personnel lower in the command structure are doubtlessly trying to do the right thing. That’s why the Revolutionaries exist, I imagine, because without the WG, the whole world would be ransacked and looted (and I imagine that’s why so many people cheered against Whitebeard at Marineford); so after Luffy invariably topples the WG, the Revolutionaries will be there to pick up the slack rather than the world descending into ransacking chaos. Of course, the WG is by no means a positive influence overall (understatement), but it’s better than no government at all, especially because there are some good people in it who genuinely want to help people like Garp and Fujitora and, again, most foot soldiers in any country join armies to protect people so the purpose of the common marine is a good one. When looking at the real world, a dictatorship is beyond awful, but if you ask me, a dictatorship which generally leaves most people alone like Saudi Arabia is a lot better than Somalia. It’s a lesser-of-two-evils situation in this case. If the WG was like North Korea and made it an active dystopia, rather than a much more passive dystopia, it would probably be worse. By defending the WG here, it might look like I support them, but they are literally the overarching bad guys of the story and have committed genocides. Their upper command is genuinely evil
I've got to disagree. We've seen the world govt commit multiple genocides on screen (likely way more offscreen) and for the average joe, there is a very high chance that they're gonna be neglected by the wg. for example, nami's village was occupied by arlong for 8 years and the marines were aware and helping arlong sustain his rule in an island in east blue (the safest region of the one piece world.) and considering the widespread famine, war and overall instability in several countries, it is safe to say that the world govt do very much to protect the average joe
@@Crowned_PvP We also saw in the Arlong flashback that the marines (purinpurin and his weakass lil crew) came to help the village residents but were sunk by Arlong's crew. It's not as simple as saying the Navy is bad or good for the common people. Some marines are good (Smoker, Garp, Fujitora, Koby etc) some are bad (Nezumi, Akainu, Oniguomo, Greenbull) and ig it just depends on the citizens' luck and who's actually incharge of protecting them which is actually still really fked up
On the point about some people being extremely tall or short and buildings not being adapted to such body types, that is actually very simple to explain. The people with such features are rare, like 1 in a million rare, it's just that since fighting is such an important feature in this manga, most of the people with larger sizes than what is normal are more represented in the story due to their size giving them an advantage in combat. But if you see most panels with a lot of normal people, like audiences looking at events, then you see that most people are fairly similar in size. Also on the Workd Government part, it's the same way USA does things, they have the biggest guns so they can get away with doing a lot of stupid/horrifying shit without fearing reprisal.
There's another big reason why the USA gets away with things and it's a lesson Russian does not or cannot learn. The USA has friends. So when the USA invades and knocks over a foreign government it has like 30 nations backing it up and making excuses for it. When Russia does it everyone slaps them with sanctions because Russia spent it's entire history alienating and being an ass to everyone.
It's not just having the biggest guns. They can also cross the Calm Belt unhindered with their battleships, which gives them a huge logistical advantage in addition to them having bases everywhere. Now that I say it, it really sounds a lot like the US😂
"Is the setting really just the end result of a thousand other stories that occurred before?" "Is it more importsnt that a setting is consitent rather than realistic?" Great quotes, and a great video! I dont know anything about One Piece, but I always enjoy your worldbuilding critiques. It's still always nice to see how you break down the components of a world into the themes the story tries to convey
"Noooo, everything has to be like real life! In real life women don't have rights, black people don't exist, and divine right monarchy is an effective form of government! Hey, isn't it weird how "realism" is used to mean replicating and deifying all the worst aspects of bigotry and authoritarianism uncritically while taking no time to address how those systems actually work..? Am I some kind of argumentative construct created to criticise a particular kind of reader who can accept dragons but not feminism..? Nah, that kind of introspection would be woke. Time to read another manga series where the main character owns slaves!" /s They said you couldn't just slam every cool thing into the setting and explore meaningful themes through the way these concepts interact. But a recent study by scientists showed that I can do what I want.

I appreciate your worldbuilding video. I think fantasy allows a lot of room for stories to not be realistic sometimes and One Piece is a good example. The setting is supposed to be more entertaining than realistic. While sometimes it works to have a realistic setting, sometimes it’s better to be entertaining when writing a story. Not everything has to make sense depending on the situation.
On your complaints about the Five Elders and Im: It's not that Oda "forgot" or "skipped over" giving solid info on them. He's simply waiting for the right time to do so. One Piece plants many secrets and mysteries, Oda will take his sweet time getting to those mysteries, so fan have ample time to theorize and build hype. Eventually Oda will drop a bombshell of info on them (All the elders names got revealed and their positions not to long ago, so that shows Oda does indeed take his time bit by bit) that will clear up everything. Essentially what I'm saying is that Oda will do stuff like this on purpose for a reason.
1. Everyone who has more than two braincells and isn't a sucker can tell that the whole "oda planned everything in advance" argument is complete BS ua-cam.com/video/WiFLKpMYqQo/v-deo.htmlsi=q_1LQp75k0WFZf6c 2. Even if things were, that still doesn't fix the worldbuilding that, in a series that wasn't supposed to be taken seriously, has suddenly turned bad because now Oda wants to end it all. ua-cam.com/video/oqQpYf_jtWY/v-deo.htmlsi=p_hgK03eUFxBotj5
Because its fiction? I dont understand this complaint. What is there to believe when the first chapter has a kid eating a fruit that makes his body stretch like rubber? Its absurd by default.
@@gunnymaru2900 i say this as someone who is very happy to ignore bad worldbuilding if something is good/entertaining/fun otherwise: there's a difference between "is this realistic/does it make sense irl?" and "is this realistic/does it make sense within the world of the narrative?". i've never seen one piece so i'll use naruto but the point is the same: in the world of naruto chakra and ninjutsu are facts of life, it's internally consistent and logical that characters can do what basically amounts to magic, that they can learn new skills and use them to walk on water etc. that's established as true in this world and therefore makes sense, despite it being woo woo nonsense if anyone irl tries to channel their earth chakra or whatever. however, other things are not internally consistent with the world that the narrative establishes (how can 5 ninja villages have an army of 80000 if only one person every half year becomes chunin and only 9 students graduate the academy in a year? how come nobody ever uses the basic jutsus they all supposedly learned in school? etc.), those things are sometimes plot holes, sometimes hand waved because they just don't matter that much. why does the harry potter's universe somehow revolve around hogwarts? because that's where the story happens, simple as that. this isn't some fatal flaw that makes a story bad, unless you're trying to create some high fantasy universe that makes sense. but it's still a valid thing to point out imho.
@@overgrownkudzu Naruto is notorious for lacking consistent world building. Chakra is a garbage power system because it does literally everything and has zero consistency. One piece is better in basically every way and you should read it :)
My biggest complaint about One Piece's world is the complete lack of prominent bounty hunters. Especially with how important the bounty of a pirate is treated, you'd think there'd be some really strong bounty hunters as well. Like okay, we have Zoro before he joined and Mihawk before he became a pirate himself and then technically Baroque works. And that's it.
The bounties are more important for marines and their promotions than bounty hunters. To be strong enough as a bounty hunter to collect enough money to be worth it makes being a pirate instead way more profitable with way less effort
@@Deebus I don't think that's true. Because bounty hunters aren't criminals by default and would therefore not have to constantly fight/get hunted by the marines. A high level bounty hunter would be raking in immense amounts of money while also having problem-free access to every single location under the world government's protection to actually spend that money, as well as sometimes possibly even cooperating with marines when it comes to hunting down pirates. They'd also have the bonus of not being seen as inherently bad by most regular citizens like pirates *or* marines are, depending on the place. If anything, in a world so full of pirates, bounty hunter would be a much easier job than pirate.
Ngl, this has genuinely inspired me to give one piece a second look after like. Idk almost a decade. I enjoyed it a lot but I just couldn't keep up with it then.
I think there is something really extra about using that picture for Oda. That picture is not actually Oda, it does get used as a picture of him all the damn time though so people do just think it is. Banger video
When i think about magical worlds, i just think "if all these magic shenanigans were real in the first place, would things turn out as they did here?" For example, The Boys and Invincible have somewhat similar premises, but the boys makes way more sense than invincible. The boys is set in a world where super heroes are real and it is mostly similar to our world but it has diverged enough as a consequence of super heroes being real. Invincible is set in a world where random people get powers out of nowhere, world destroying aliens are a common occurrence, demons exist, galactic governments exist, humans know about aliens and aliens live among people... And yet, earth is basically the same as ours, humans dont even have space travel yet.
I'm so glad you brought up the large human thing. I just finished Water Seven and was kind of confused by the giant people in Franky's gang. Especially considering they ran into actual giant and no one said anything about the very large humans. It didn't ruin my experience or anything but it's good to know I'm just supposed to roll with things like that and they'll never get explained
Big news morgan is the best side character i love this guy. He dont care about the oppressive world government or the truth. Just wants to tell a entertaining story to the public. Sometimes the truth is told but conspiracies and a good narrative matters more
One year later and 639 comments and some people still miss the point of the video, mostly by either not watching the video or seeing it all the way through. I think I will never stop loving this video for that reason alone. This is amon the peak examples f excellent sarcasm.
If your premise is that the worldbuilding needs to be "realistic" by default then this video has already failed. Realism was never the goal of One Piece and that should be obvious from chapter 1.
I know it’s mostly for fun, but I’ve still decided to bring it up. No hard feelings! Hm, I think that there are some details that explain some of your complains, for example, we pretty much know that one piece world is created and not natural, it was confirmed with both punk hazard and now lulusia. Also, minks and fishman have some relation to zoan fruits (confirmed by sulong’s activation with rumble ball), so maybe in future the way they work might explain some weird things (like their strength). And some will be probably explained in future, like how gorosei are chosen (we literally learnt their names 10 chapters ago)
This is why you should not judge the quality of world building by how realistic it is. The purpose isn't to build an earth 2.0, one piece is not alternate history. "I just wanted to feel smart by saying that you'd die if you were made of rubber"
what? it is completely valid to judge a worldbuilding by how realistic it is. The fictional world and the characters must adhere to the rules of the world but in one piece the rules seems to be flexible ,maybe even non existent. Its ironic ,you say one piece isnt alternate history yet it mirrors so much of our worlds politics past or present.
I don't know if the last part is sarcasm, but if it's not you're the first booktuber to actually like bleach, it definitely deserved a video about why bleach is actually great series on the perspective of a booktuber since it is definitely the most controversial of not just the big 3 but also in the whole anime/manga community while actually having a lot of amazing and cathartic moments to it, especially how underrated he is at writing different races, theme behind them and how its connected to other race to exemplify a theme PS: this might be a hot take but Zanpakuto are just harry potter wands but much more cohesive and systematized
Honestly I love Bleach but I can see why it's not universally loved like One Piece or Naruto. The elusive storytelling where many things are found in subtext is a double edge sword. And execution isn't always there. But Bleach is so cool to me. The poems, the cinematic title cards and paneling, and great character writing. I just adore it personally.
@@chasinghaze0962 I kinda understand the stigma going around Bleach, I personally think that storytelling and writing should have balance in meta and accessibility regardless of how well written it is(to be fair this is subjective) on how to pave through a certain narrative in a way that it can at least be paved on a smooth ride without the mandatory homework or re-read, but I also think that a lot of ideas and concept can only be shown by being "creatively selfish", and it shows on works like Bleach and to some extent HxH. This is the reason why Tsutomu Nihei mangas are quite controversial despite the very high critical acclaim of it compared to berserk, vagabond, vinland saga
Well it’s obvious that if we applied that logic to every fiction then objectively their are trash. Every fiction has his illogical or unrealistic mechanic, and it’s part of the adventure, to understand the universe. It is not finished though, at the probably all the Imu truth will be known. If you are already applying the logic of having the power of infinite control over an element and then not understanding how they are not dead??, well you could say they imitate the complete human body at perfection but instead it is made from the element, making obvious they all can return into their base form or human form, when they teleport using they element i think probably they have to always send his complete Crain copy and from there the body is build. Easy just to resume all that info as just the ability to do that, funny.
Egghead Spoiler // They just revealed that the reason Devil Fruit users can't swim is because they are inherently unnatural, they break all laws of physics, thus they are an enemy to mother nature herself, the ocean This is how Luffy can still have a nervous system
I like worlds that build gradually without a real plan to an extent. I think Adventure Time is a good example. But after a while, you do get a lot of bloat and weird leftovers from previous stories (like season 5 of Adventure Time).
Sorry, but this video is laughable. "One Piece" runs on the bizarre and the nonsensical, but because you don't embrace those aspects, that's why you think it's bad.
I saw the title and went: "This is gonna be awful and I'm here for it." Then I saw it was your Channel and went: "This is gonna be awesome and I'm here for it."
We have seen other Celestial Dragons that can fight and aren't complete idiots, most notably definitely-not-shanks-dad. So, we're back to square one with how they get chosen. Also, they're either literal Demons or have Demon Devil fruits so that's fun. On an unrelated note, its funny how much information can change in 2 months, I'm sure that whatever I just said was available when this video was made.
I'm not sure I liked the sarcastic tone. I'm someone open to silly stuff and understand this series is not supposed to be realistic, but fun. My only problem is that your video felt more like a rant. Maybe someone upset you by talking trash about the show so you're responding to them, but as someone who let himself be convinced to watch it I instead felt a confrontational vibe
The single strip of land could be caused by a lack of wobble in the spinning of the planet, hence there would be less water around the equator. However, this also means that there are no seasons in this world.
Well, it kind of does according to all maps we've seen in the series, but it also seems like One Piece's world doesn't have an equator in the first place. It's a world that operates atmospherically very different from ours. The redline goes from pole to pole (and we know the world have poles due to compases being a thing) and the Grand Line runs where their equator would be, but considering it works weirdly magnetically it clearly operates and fullfill a different purpose than our equator. It also seems to be a bigger planet than ours but I don't think that's ever been stated outright.

Most likely the reason the world looks like it does is because the villains have terraforming powers and this shape of the world is how they can consolidate power the best. And they changed the world during the Void Century. Most likelym
About your “individuals that consolidate power” part. I agree Much of the world, even that officially controlled by the government, is actually run by smaller independent factions that just carve out a small slice of it to rule with an iron fist and just don’t overstep their boundaries with the larger factions enough to be worth exterminating. Even that island that Luffy met Shanks on is unofficially controlled by mountain bandits that rob them periodically or take protection money, until marines occasionally come to visit, during which they hide in the mountains. They know they are not worth the effort to actually hunt down, so they just stay out of the Marines was Along did. the exact same thing but just less unhinged. The only reason they aren’t officially independent countries is the fact that everyone knows the Marines could crush them if they wanted to. Which is why the Emporers are such a big deal. Those four pirate crews are so powerful that the WG can’t even pretend to be the ones really in charge. Such great world building

@the_crownedking but do people from the outside know about the genocides?
Common anti-anarchist L
@@Crowned_PvP We also saw in the Arlong flashback that the marines (purinpurin and his weakass lil crew) came to help the village residents but were sunk by Arlong's crew. It's not as simple as saying the Navy is bad or good for the common people. Some marines are good (Smoker, Garp, Fujitora, Koby etc) some are bad (Nezumi, Akainu, Oniguomo, Greenbull) and ig it just depends on the citizens' luck and who's actually incharge of protecting them which is actually still really fked up
The WG has a specific protocol for commiting genocide, no overarching government is definitely better.
Now that I say it, it really sounds a lot like the US😂
The larger/more handsome people are the ones who follow their dreams.
You showing a picture of Eiji Anunuma instead of Oda every time made me chuckle

Great quotes, and a great video!
Time to read another manga series where the main character owns slaves!" /s
They said you couldn't just slam every cool thing into the setting and explore meaningful themes through the way these concepts interact. But a recent study by scientists showed that I can do what I want.
@@PlatinumAltaria how did you manage to shove all of your politics into one comment under a One Piece video? Look I’m not on the Right but really? This was a totally harmless argument and somehow you managed to bring every single one of your political views into the mix.

I'm a decently big OP fan but it requires a lot of suspension of disbelief and this video is entirely fair
Because its fiction? I dont understand this complaint. What is there to believe when the first chapter has a kid eating a fruit that makes his body stretch like rubber? Its absurd by default.
@@gunnymaru2900and some people can't get used to something that absurd. It's entirely understandable and fine for someone to think like that.
Isn't this entire video sarcastic tho?
Gonna shiver some timbers with this one capn
My biggest complaint about One Piece's world is the complete lack of prominent bounty hunters.
Especially with how important the bounty of a pirate is treated, you'd think there'd be some really strong bounty hunters as well.
Like okay, we have Zoro before he joined and Mihawk before he became a pirate himself and then technically Baroque works.
And that's it.
Only once in the entire series thus far has someone actually collected a bounty... and it wasn't even for a pirate.
Same
The bounties are more important for marines and their promotions than bounty hunters.
@@skeletonwar4445 wait you actually really believe bounty hunting would be more profitable and easier than being a pirate? 😂

Banger video
When i think about magical worlds, i just think "if all these magic shenanigans were real in the first place, would things turn out as they did here?"
For example, The Boys and Invincible have somewhat similar premises, but the boys makes way more sense than invincible.
That's gotta be the spiciest hot take of a title I've ever seen regarding an anime. Literally slandering the main thing it's praised for.

Hm, I think that there are some details that explain some of your complains, for example, we pretty much know that one piece world is created and not natural, it was confirmed with both punk hazard and now lulusia.

It's a world that operates atmospherically very different from ours. The redline goes from pole to pole (and we know the world have poles due to compases being a thing) and the Grand Line runs where their equator would be, but considering it works weirdly magnetically it clearly operates and fullfill a different purpose than our equator.

Much of the world, even that officially controlled by the government, is actually run by smaller independent factions that just carve out a small slice of it to rule with an iron fist and just don’t overstep their boundaries with the larger factions enough to be worth exterminating.
