This is crazy helpful for me because I was just about to start a commission for a reference sheet for my friend’s character! Your art’s amazing dude and I’m glad your channel has an interesting, easy to understand grip on the fundamentals of character design! Wish I found you sooner >_
This is such a helpful video! I love it. It’s reminiscent of your past videos because they’re all super helpful too! What I’m saying is anybody reading this who hasn’t seen your other videos should go do that
I really like this. I really want to do character design. I’m trying to still learn how to properly turn a character but I also want to know how to color and shade well using different brushes. Can you do a tutorial on how you color when color a character?
Congrats on another great year! Finishing Parcel was a great achievement. And your re-envisioning of Crash's whole island was fantastic. Best wishes for 2020! 😀
I've found your channel recently in my reccomendations from UA-cam, and I'm happy that UA-cam reccomended your channel for me. I like drawing as a hobby, but thanks for these videos with explaining stuff related to character design, they're helping me a lot!
What a fantastic and helpful video, definitely going to put this to use for some reference sheets I’ve been meaning to do for so long. Brookes, it’s been such a fantastic year of learning thanks to your content. I wish you the absolute best in 2020
Thanks for this. I've been trying to create my own original character for a while now, and I thought of a good design not too long ago, but I didn't know how to make a character turnaround for him. This video really helped, thanks!
You did a great job on this video. I love the character Biko he's so cute. This video has helped better understand what I need to do for my character turnaround, which actually I was planning on doing today with one of my characters so I could create a 3D model of him and animate him. Thanks for the video, and all the videos you've done, they are super helpful and awesome, can't wait to see what you make in 2020. Happy New Years :D
I need to figure out how to do character sheets, so thank you. I'm going to make a comic, so I really need this to keep the characters from looking super weird.
I really don't know if I'm bad at this because I hate it, or if I hate it because I'm bad at this, but as someone who wants to learn 3D and do characters beyond just an illustration, I gotta put in some reps
I was wondering if a series of real life photos could work as a character reference sheet/turnaround. I plan on hiring some peeps to animate myself and a pal, but wondered if I could just send them a "live action" version. Thanks, this was very informative to know!
Are you talking about 2d or 3d in that capacity? 3d characters with hard edges are typically easier because you can use those same 3d shapes as boxes and cubes. If theyre incredibly flat, like a Gennedy Cartoon Network type graphical look, the turns are kind of up to interpretation. As long as they look good, there's no real reason to rotate them around from drawing to drawing.
@@CharacterDesignForge it's hard to explain, but for example, a really point nose. or something like phineas's face from phineas and ferb, but in a forward view
@@inspectorspinda an idea could be to find a sculpture or piece of toy with those pointy features you speak of - then study them as you would study a model - and voilá you will know how to draw it!

I find it pretty useful when you need to fill in flat colours quickly to get a handle on your piece and the colour palette you wanna use. And I'll just fill in any odd gaps from there
Can you make a video about how to take your art LESS seriously, I feel like I can’t really sketch. I’m never happy with what I do make and I look at my friend who makes amazing cursed drawings without trying.
Hi! Just by curiosity, how much time did you spend doing the turn around? Sometimes when we see a speed up video we think "oh, the artist is so fast!!!" and somehow we start to pressure to be that fast even that we know it's a speed up video haha.
Crazy you commented on this, since a new turnaround video is coming soon. I dont really know, speed isn’t super important to me, but I don’t think turnarounds really happen “quick”- they’re a lot of methodical checking and rechecking
I've got a question about turnaround presentation. I fell in love with the pencil brushes in csp. I have a bad habit of wrist drawing I'm trying to break and have unsteady hands. I love dirty sketches (I pet the line, but it works for my style.) and it's always how I have drawn. Is using the pencil brushes acceptable for turnarounds in any way or character sheets or should they be inked and flat color or rendered without lines? Is there a right and wrong way to do this?
Yes, definitely! When preparing character sheets for an animation studio, the character sheet needs to act as a reference for the production team/animators to use when animating. It should act as a rulebook for several things. Some character sheets show how to do the lines, while others show rules on adding shadows, color, and light. The reason most character sheets have clean lines, is because the production wants to use this same approach in their cartoon/animation If the animation had messy lines as part of the style, the character sheet could reflect that! Hope this helps
Quick Question: How do you know where to place the lines on the sheet? Like you have horizontal lines touching the eyes and mouth. Do you place those like in between or...I don't know how to explain it in text. Just how do you know where to place the lines on the sheet??

Please reply to me🙏 soon our professor will give us an activity to draw the character on different poses base on the given character turnaround can you make a video on giving tips on how to do it??
It seems like you'd like me to make a video to personally help you, which is definitely not how this or UA-cam works- if there isn't something I've already covered in a video before, this is the purpose of the personal critiques I offer through my site or Patreon.
alright, i have a bit of an issue. my oc has like.. OUTRAGEOUS hair. like a huge spiky afro. and the only issue i have with drawing him from the side is the hair around the actual face. could you help please?
