  • Female pirates were few and far between, but Zheng Yi Sao was not only a woman who dominated piracy, but became the most successful pirate in history. She rose from poverty to piratical riches, retiring to become a respected member of society in her old age, having led a full and exciting life terrorising the South China Seas. This video looks at her life and rise to power....

She must be one of the luckiest people that ever set foot on this earth😅not only being an outlaw and also having a hell of criminal actions written in your case, being such a successful criminal and at the end, having a happy ending as well and having a normal life and totally put the past behind! I say this, because when you watch East Asian period dramas, you notice that they...let's just say pirates weren't treated gently once they were caught and surrendered

I feel like actually being a woman may possibly have been in her favour - we don't have an actual description of exactly what she looked like, but I feel like Zheng Yi Sao just did the 'little woman with big innocent eyes' act when she really needed to get out of trouble. 😂

@@user-fg9xz4bz3b There was no pirate empire left to inherit. History seems to have lost track of her after she and her husband surrendered. She retired as a wealthy woman though.

It always surprises me she isn't better known, and that there aren't more films or TV shows about her - she's literally the world's most successful female pirate, can't get better than that! 😂

Just a minor correction: in Portugal, “José” is pronounced with a “J “somewhat like that in “John”, rather than how it would be in Spanish, and the “o” is read like the” o” in “move” :)

So, this one will probably have to do without explaining for them all, because there are A LOT, but how would you order the Plantagenet Kings from Best to worst? It’s a very interesting dynasty, as it has some of the best and worst english monarchs (Henry II and Edward II, Edward III and John, etc…)

    • @HistorysForgottenPeople
      @HistorysForgottenPeople  4 місяці тому +3

Yeah, we would be here for a WHILE if we had to give all the reasons! 😂 Super complicated family. Although I will say that most of my 'bests' are based on running the country well and then taking personality into account, and equally the 'worsts' are the opposite. Okay, here's my list from best to worst:
      1. Edward III - all round good guy, for the most part.
      2. Henry II - good ruler, not so good at being a father/husband.
      3. Henry V - only problem was dying too young.
      4. Edward I
      5. Edward V - counting him, but he's neutral as he wasn't around long.
      6. Edward IV (although now we're into kings I like less lol)
      7. Richard I (although he and Henry IV are interchangeable for me)
      8. Henry IV
      9. Henry VI
      10. Henry III
      11. Richard III
      12. John I (I can still remember the song from Disney's 'Robin Hood' lol)
      13. Edward II
I don't THINK I've missed anyone out? You'd think I might put Richard III at the bottom, but Edward pretty much ran the country into the ground, wrecked his family's lives, and destroyed his marriage, so...at the bottom lol.

      @@HistorysForgottenPeople solid list!!
      For me it’d go
Henry II- bad husband, though as for his sons they weren’t that nice either😭
Edward III- as you said, good guy for the most part, but he did start the 100 years war
Henry V- got the props from his father’s later reign, was a strong leader (although not a good person I think)
Edward I- if one wasn’t a jew or scot it was good😭
Henry IV- ok hear me out- he usurped the throne but Richard II was begging to be overthrown. He faced rebellions but, in the end, left the kingdom in a better state than he found it, and tried to keep his promises made when he took the throne.
Edward IV- don’t like him, but he was a competent ruler, can’t take that away from him
Edward V, though he didn’t reign, but still better than some who did
Henry III- not a good ruler, but not a bad guy
Richard I- he spent less than a year in England, ruled almost as little as Edward V fr
Henry VI- I do think he was a good man, but most definitely not an efficient king- I think life as a monk would’ve been great for him, sadly, he was born a prince and his father didn’t do him the courtesy of staying alive lol
Richard III- had he ruled longer, he might have been better, but having his nephews killed doesn’t help his reputation
Richard II- his shit rule led to the Wars of the Roses
John and Edward are equally terrible for me
