i've been listening to many versions of this song for almost a full hour and i'm still not tired, this is so great, as soon as i can get a guitar, i want this song to be the first one i'll play, even if it takes forever to learn because it's advanced or something :D
For the rhythm, It's pretty easy with a capo on 3rd fret. The chords are fairly simple. About the only tricky one is the transition from the C chord shape to the Am. There a quick G/B thrown in there but it's an easy one (just two strings to hold down).
Without a doubt one of the "coolest" songs ever......if you don't feel good listenin to this at least at some point.....your made of cement......so I guess it stands to reason this is one of the coolest tutorials......never tried to play this despite it being one of my favs.....thanks for remindin me
Thanks Stephen! If you have 10 minutes, I'd suggest watching the video below. It will make you feel even better, because Stewart Kelley, the writer, wrote it out of something horrible that happened to him. Also, he's interviewed about 1 mile from where I live! ua-cam.com/video/bFVUU3R1aSQ/v-deo.html
@@MarkZabel Mark Zabel WOW!Obviously the last kinda place you'd expect such a wonderful song to be inspired from. Thanks for sharing the vid......I think....lol.....now I'll probably remember the story every time I play it.Funny tho how some of the greatest songs ever come from a painful place.Anyways I gotta add I really enjoyed last weeks "live" stream conversation about best/worst songs on albums. Now getting older I find myself not remembering all the songs on albums anymore ....was a time I could rattle off every song on any Beatle Stones and Faces/Stewart album. Then again I kinda stayed in that place for 2-3 decades.Perhaps forgetting comes a bit from now my musical appreciation is all over the place and not limited to guitar.Anyhow....Happy 2020 to you and yours.....hope to see ya soon.Good time/s.

great lesson mark... u have taught me 5 songs and that is just this morning! Also your the first teacher too show me how to do double bends the right way. Keep doing what your doing your awesome.
Great job Mark! I love this song as much today as I did when it first came out in 1972. Big thanks for doing this. Man-o-man, there were some good songs that came out in 1972 along with this one. "Alone Again (Naturally)" "Long Cool Woman in a Black Dress" and "Everybody Plays The Fool" just to name a few. Thanks again!
Thanks! Pop was still great then. Real rock acts were relevant and influenced pop. Ah, I'm sounding even older than I am! :) Thanks for watching Steve!
Loving the music! I know we are grooving to the beautiful "Dancing in the Moonlight", -I can't help it but the sound makes me feel like it's a sunny day! :)
Thanks for posting. Besides the great lesson ( no water breaks playing this one ) I watched the Fenderman post for the story behind it. Incredible selection for a lesson ( guitar and perseverance ) Mark!
You're welcome Phil. Yes, isn't it an amazing story. And I just loved his life outlook. His comments at the end of "the universe's response" to this song were right on.
Nice idea Mark. Great lesson. I have always thought the solo and fills were done on a 335 on the original. Sherman Kelly wrote the song, his brother Wells was the drummer for the Orleans. There is a story about how the song was written. I'll find it and link it. It wasn't a very pleasant experience that inspired it.
@@Teleman73 Thanks. HOLY CRAP!!! That's Cayuga Lake! The spot Sherman Kelly is at is about 1 mile from my home!! No kidding. I fish by those docks all the time. Yeah, I read this when writing the description, but I didn't know the details. That was a great interview. I don't know him, but that's the sort of person I strive to be; whatever happens respond positively and with affirmation of cooperation and joy. To take such an experience and create this song out of it is amazing!
Excellent video and lesson. I would really appreciate if you could teach how to play the keyboard intro on guitar. Also, I’m a long time subscriber. Thanks
Thanks! I'll give it a shot. I didn't really look into doing the arrangement, but I like the song and it's worth a try to get it fairly close. Good suggestion!
Hi Nicolas. The tab that I did is *in the video description, as I say in the video. But I only tabbed the solo, not the whole thing*. I would encourage you to learn the melody by ear, not by tab. It will make you a much better musician. I discuss this at 11:55 in the video. But if you want the tab, you can probably find something for the melody using Google. Here's the link I found - seems a reasonable place to start: tabs.ultimate-guitar.com/tab/king-harvest/dancing-in-the-moonlight-guitar-pro-704171
That’s so funny...over the weekend for some reason, this song popped into my head. I had to look it up and listen to it- it must be decades since I’ve heard it. Incredible song, and I’m a huge Venture fan! Grand Slam as far as I’m concerned! Where did you ever find that backing track??
This song is permanently etched into my brain!! :) My wife loves it. Thanks for the vote of confidence!! I just Googled "Dancing in the Moonlight Guitar backing track" and found it.
Hi. I'll give it a try. That one is a bit of a pain to record because of the multiple tracks (there are at least 2 guitars there doing different parts) and getting the effects to sound right. Let me see what I can do. Great song though for sure, so I'll try it out!
You know that you can drop this tune to D Major (or just put a capo on the first fret) and the ENTIRE WHIRLY PIANO PART lays right under your fingers! I did my own complete fingerstyle version of the tune and it is playable although some of the melody gets a bit high. Pretty easy there...
I didn't know that. I've seen people capo at the 3rd fret and play it in C position. I really was just playing it like a sax player by taking the melody, so it doesn't really matter. But to play the cool piano part I'm sure it would make a HUGE difference. So thanks!!
Very similar to the original but with a sort of rootsy guitar vibe instead of the whirling keyboard sound ... a couple of different chord changes in there and slight melody change. A little more open and loose. I like it!!
@@MarkZabel Google it just seems A simple Think a big out using your ear But then again I've been doing it 25 years In sometimes I forget how difficult it used to be for me when I was younger

Did I detect a little Wes Montgomery sound/style at about 3:15?
Very cool, Mark.
Ha ha! Maybe a little bit. I'm not worthy of carrying Wes' guitar case though. He was truly the master of octaves!
