What makes Mio work is that Beryl already had the most highschool lebel beef with Sailor Moon "Oh, you took boyfriend, I'll ruin your life" And Mio just exemplifies how childish the whole situation is. Also her signature song is a banger
Mamaru's fiancé seems to take a few story beats from the anime when Rei was trying really hard to romance him for like 1/4th of a season (I believe during the Rainbow Crystal arc), although the moment it's revealed he was the prince Rei pretty much went "well he and Usagi were meant for each other, so its ok."
For me, Princess Sailor Moon and the whole 'destroy the world' plot reminded me so much of Hotaru/Sailor Saturn from Sailor Moon S. A world-ending power that if released would cause devastation. I always said the live-action series felt like the original Sailor Moon with broad strokes of Sailor Moon S by the end.

I think it's quite interesting how despite Precure for the most part being lighter and less complex than either the Sailor Moon anime or manga, it is actually this darker more complex version of Sailor Moon that it cribbed more from. Particularly it's overarching story being more character driven than plot driven, episodes often putting far more focus on the girls lives (to the point that the monster fight at the end can come across as arbitrary) and great emphasis on physical combat and action when the girls do fight. Not to say it's a rip off (both began airing too close to each other for that), but more Toei liked some of the ideas they had here and thought they could work in the other magical girl series they were working on at the time.
You know what? I've been watching Precure for years now and when I finally watched PGSM, I did feel like I was watching a live-action Precure show! But I could never figure out why. Thank you for breaking it down for me.

We are getting one video per character? Because if we are, I'm gonna be super excited! Honestly, PGSM has the best version of the characters and Usagi is a great example. This Usagi might become frustrating sometimes, but she's never annoying and it's so easy to see why the other girls love her so much.
Honestly i'm glad to see pgsm talked more about all the good things this adaptation was able to add to the sailor moon lore, so i really hope you keep going with it 😊

Personally I'm not a fan of her outfit's color scheme. Using dark pink instead of red looks kinda gaudy, reminds me too much of anime from the 2010's.

C'mon Lance, you clearly want to turn this into PGSM Dissection, so just indulge yourself and go for it. You're passionate enough that make someone who's never been interested in it before, me, into wanting to watch you take this series to the operating table!
Also, I wouldn't be shocked if you spend the next episode all on Sailor Mercury, considering what they do with her on the series, which is one of the few details I've long known of it.

I have tried like 1 volume of Sailor Moon and like 3 episodes because I love the aesthetic, its cute. But being mostly a shounen and action fan... it was REALLY boring. But youre almost convincing me to give this live action a chance!
At the risk of being too personal, I didn't like the Sailor Mercury cosplay in the first video. Not sure if there was something different about it this video, or if it's just my mood, but it looked much better this time.
Anyway, I doubt this is a version of Sailor Moon I'll ever sit down to watch for myself, subtitles just really don't work for me, but that just makes these recaps all the more fascinating.
This serie was my first ever introduction to Sailor Moon as I didn't have a chance to grow up with the anime serie (it never was aired in my country). And till this day it's my favorite. Even though I read the manga and saw Crystal serie, nothing can really beat the live action for me. As you said the character storyline is just so well polished. Yes, of course the CG and some artistic choices (like the Luna puppet) might not have been the best, but the acting and character development was incredible. Also as someone who's not really into romance-centered stuff I appreciate that they put more time into deepening Usagi's relationship with the other girls. Because I'm sorry, but in the manga and crystal they're friendships felt hardly there, everything was a bit too Usagi-Mamoru centered (thou I clearly understand why). Also this serie made me fall in love with Rei. She's just the right amount of tragic and symphatetic character that's it's hard to not love her. Also love that she was more of a One-chan to Usagi rather than a telenovela rival. (One of the reasons why I don't want to start the 90's anime, also it's too long lol)
I would love you to deep dive into this serie, your videos are fun and keep me hooked. Also need to hear your opinions on Dark Mercury and the (you know what...) Minako situation.
Thanks for sharing your experience! I agree with you on absolutely everything... except the Luna puppet being a "not best" artistic choice. I think Luna and Artemis were the best parts of the series, and I would not have wanted them to do it any other way! So charming. So cute. So hilarious. =P

Sawai Miyuu's performance as Usagi is EXCELLENT. You can't help but melt before her radiant smile.
One detail about PGSM that stands out to me is how the characters almost always call each other by name, even when they're transformed. This really hammers home how much they're their own people and it ties into what I consider to be PGSM's theme: how much do the characters' past lives affect their present selves, and how do they feel about it? Therefore, it makes total sense to me on a thematic level that Usagi's past life can take control when triggered. And for Usagi's arc, it likewise makes sense that this possession by Serenity can both bring about *and* negate catastrophe; Usagi makes the world a better place with her unbridled emotions, but keeping them in check because of the superweapon she has is the biggest challenge she could ever face.
I'm gonna take a guess as a Sonic fan when it comes to the live action Sailor Moon's take on Princess Serenity or Princess Sailor Moon with a little help from Fleetways Sonic the comic. For anyone who doesn't know, STC made it so Super Sonic is DRASTICALLY different from the way Sonic himself usually is, taking a guy who can admittedly be seen as quite rude to his friends and foes alike and turning him into what's basically a demon bent on destroying everything around him.
Now as for why people would be upset at this? Well, in Sonic media aside from STC, Super Sonic is seen essentially as just Sonic, but better. When Sonic isn't able to push through a situation normally, there's always the guarantee he can when he goes super. Where as STC takes Super Sonic and makes it something terrifying. Something Sonic himself doesn't even want to become back before he and Supes were split(in which Supes had wanted to kill him too).
By that same logic, people likely find it unnerving for Princess Serenity to act in such a vengeful way, ready to blow up the world again if her prince got hurt or killed because it isn't how people view Usagi/Princess Serenity.
I know I asked for Superhuman Samuari Syber Squad/Gridman video. I’m not complaining about this upload at all.

Also, curse the powers that be that this version isn't available in a form I can enjoy, because the more you talk about it, the more I wish I hadn't dismissed it back when I had the working eye needed to read subtitles.

3:31 People are SO stupid about that when reality is that Usagi and Mamoru's age gap is exactly that of my own parents. They met when Mom was 14 and Dad was 18. Dad was a CIVILIZED and RESPONSIBLE human being and did the MATURE and RESPONSIBLE thing, he waited until Mom was old enough to get married like a moral person does. Back in 1970, this concept was still known to normal people. Mamoru is a pretty mature guy, so I'm sure he knows better than to take advantage of such a young girl. The problem is, most people these days are such moral heathens that they cannot conceive of such a thing.

It's the fact that someone who's 18 would look at a 14 year old romantically in the first place that's so weird and wrong, even if they do wait. What if she was 2 years younger, and was 12? If he waited, that would be incredibly weird. There's no reason a 18 year old should have feelings for a 14 year old. Imagine if a 16 had feelings for a 12 year old.

@therealhardrock Yeah, your father was a predator, 4 years is nothing in ADULT years. 8 years is different in ADULT years. In teem years, it's entirely different. Just because pedophilia was more normalized with a lot of youth a little while ago doesn't mean it's still not wrong. If he had fallen in love with her when they were both grown adults even though he knew her at 14, that would be different, but if you're saying he fell in love with her WHILE she was 14, then he's a pedo. And there's obviously something wrong with those ages if he had to wait in the first place.

As I said, back in the 70's, these age gaps weren't taboo because people weren't as scared of "predators" as they were back then. Mom and Dad knew each other's parents and Dad respected Mom's parents' rules for dating their daughter. You, like most of your generation, have a real problem with assuming that you're subjective moral feelings are objective fact without any kind of introspection. My parents had a healthy, stable relationship back then and are still healthy today, I'd say that logically invalidates your point right there.

I'm really loving these PGSM videos! Two things! First, flip phone costume changing was a favorite of mine! As dated as it is by modern standards, it made so much sense. I feel like Toei learned a lesson from their missed opportunities with Power Rangers Wild Force / Gaoranger and the growl phone. Secondly, Princess Sailor Moon is a total badass and I freggin LOVE seeing her on screen, not giving a damn and raising all hell. A perfect twist on Sailor Moon!
I think it's some of the possibility that some people are over layering Princess form with dark lady let's be honest here a lot of us were anime fans then fans of the original books for multiple reasons but for obvious one means we kind of all going to have eye rolling moments when we see certain storylines and actively cringe at seeing them come either earlier or have a new take even if it is actually a good new take! I mean for one I'm glad that we're not having 40 moments of Oh my gosh the incest dialogue is so terrifying there's a reason why I did not watch crystal's version I skipped it for a good chunk of it because I still cannot help but have Vietnam flashbacks of that yes I know it is minor but still some of the dialogue kind of feels like it granddad did grow up behind the dub!

Off topic of this video (which despite being only a dragon ball fan still enjoyed) but I remember you saying you don't really play dragon ball games BUT I think you should try attack of the saiyans! It's an RPG but the main reason I think you would like it is the fact that it opens with three side stories where you play and krillin, tien, and yamcha and get actual character driven story with them!

I'm not very familiar with any version of Sailor Moon, so I wouldn't be able to appreciate the dissection as much as I do DBD. But that said, I'm generally interested in all discussions about adapting things from one medium to another.
I would say Episode by Episode would require a larger scope.
Doing this video per character seems to be the perfect balance at the moment.
As long as you can handle the scope, then episode by episode might be possible if you are committed.

Hey, you know how in most live action adaptations of anime the characters always have their hair colored black or brown compared to their colorful animated counterparts?
What exactly's stopping these producers from dyeing the actor's hair ot at least get em a wig? Granted the sailor forms do have wigs (but not the normal forms for some reason) but you get the picture.
These are supposed to be typical Japanese school students, so I'm totally fine with them having more realistic hair colors, especially in live action where there's a far closer connection to reality.
The actors were still in high school, so dying their hair was a no-no.
