I bought one 3 months ago. It was the "Stillwater Harris" version from Glasgow Angling Centre. Its exactly the same vice as the Riveruns one featured. The same vice seems to be available everywhere under a different name.
    1. The jaws started to open out on 4th fly tied
    2. Paint started chipping off the jaws revealing an unhardened set of jaws.
    3. The connection of the jaws to the frame stripped out on tightening, ruining the vice. I ended up using a long bolt and a nut and superglue to stop that moving too.
    4. I had to bolt it to a thick heavy hardwood chopping board to stop it moving about and increase the height.
    5. I had to change the base connection to the shaft, using a part from my old vice to stop it moving.
    6. I ended up filing the end of the jaws off to make it usable again.
In summary, after paying 100 pounds for it, I felt like it was something off Wish, Temu or Banggood with an inflated price tag. In fact the same vice is available on Temu for alot less money, under a different name of course.
It was awful. I wouldnt recommend it to my worst enemy. Save 20 pounds and get the Snowbee Fly Mate Standard Pedestal Vice. I havent received it yet but from initial research seems better. I think your initial review is fair but after using it and living with it, it can only be given 1 star. It's still useable as I write but I spent nearly as much as the vice to get it right. The Snowbees on the way and I intend to feature a review on my channel

Hi Lindsay, I use this vice but found the same problem with the movement. I just removed the socket with the plastic knob and just put the shaft of the vice in without it and used the Allen key to tighten and it sorted it out. My desk is high so the height was perfect for me.

Thats a great solution, I knew there would be a simple way to sort this. How do you find the weight of the pedestal base?

@@lindsayiflyfish it does me for what I do Lindsay, I'm knew to the tying and it's a massive step up from my £20 clamp vice with the spring jaws. Really enjoyed adapting the rotary function into my tying and for the price I'm not complaining but eventually I will probably upgrade again

@@lindsayiflyfish I did something similar, I left the locating collar in place but replaced the plastic knob with a 5mm Allen screw and nipped it up with an Allen key. With regards the height, I just cut 2 squares of ply wood the same shape as the base, to lift it and used a small G clamp to lock it to my bench. For the price its brilliant.

Hi Lindsay a good review for the vise is it possible to remove the shaft locking screw and use one of the allen screws to lock in place and stop movement

I believe it is someone that owns the vice has done just that. 👍

As ever an honest assessment of a reasonable vice. A good starter or second vice before committing to something such as Talon or similar high end vice. Be that due to financial or other considerations. One expires to get gear that is at least good enough for the task at hand. Be it a vice, rod, reel, lines. The only thing you simply cannot compromise on is the quality of the hook you use. Hanak are amazing. Reliable and well designed using the right metals and coatings. Never soft or brittle. With an excellent range of styles in a wide choice gauge, weight, and strength. Covering the tiniest dry, to patterns for nymphs, to lures even For large pike, zander, muskie, bass. No matter what fancy rod you have. Cheap out on hooks or tippet you are wasting your time.

Hope your trip to the USA is everything you wish for in quality of sport and memories. Shame we have lost some of our best fisheries here this week. I only hope that they can find the right people to bring them back successfully. That we as anglers can maintain enough support to keep them viable in the future.

How about a Scottie products vice

Do you think it's a quality that would 'last'? Those minor movements might increase and be very annoying. Also, a minor technique criticism - we had your head and shoulders and just the very top of the vice. It would have been improved if we could see more of the vice when you were 'working' it. Overall though It was very informative. Thanks.

Thanks, it’s of sufficient quality that if you only tie occasionally it would do a good job for you. Not really a vice for a serious or commercial fly tier. Thanks for the tip on the positioning of the cameras 👍

The vise rocking would get on my nerves...also the hook did seem to move a little which would also do my head in..the pedestal base is totally useless..I wouldn't waste me money on that vise

It is what it is for £100. If you are starting out it might well give you a taste to buy a more premium brand. It’s up to you.
