Welcome back to my first video of my THIRD freaken attempt to reach Greenland!
Hop onboard and join me on the first leg sailing from Norway to Shetland across 200 NM of North Sea. Watch how I managed to rip my brand new Rolly Tasker gennaker to pieces in seconds, beeing very unfortunate in my attempt to deploy it. Things very often dont go as planned, as this expedition in full will show you. There is only one rule when that happens. Keep looking forward! :)

Cigarettes, no gloves, no life-vest, no safety lines, Pepsi, ham and cheese this guy is a f%ing legend! 😂
No legend, just Norwegian. Its called freedom of choice.
Great comment lol! Don't know if I'd be keen to go up on deck without a harness, but I don't think Erik is foolhardy. He's tested himself and his very well-appointed boat to the max (previous vids). He actually seems pretty safety conscious, and knows his shit. Wind vanes and autohelms are brilliant, you can get out of the wind to light your smoke!
@@alexpapa2968 I was him and I Am Portuguese so sailing and the sea is in my DNA... until...my, not one but both (upper and lower starboard side) lifelines failed while leaning on it and i hit the water fully dressed while the boat continued on autopilot and yes i was alone.
Btw this happen at night.
I certainly respect "freedom of choice" but... with all my wisdom I can certainly say: No matter how prepared, qualified or at ease you are at sea because in a split second everything can and will go really bad and the price to pay can be forever unaffordable.
@@MBailote I presume you had a life jacket and personal PRB?
Smoking and pepsi are one thing, a life line is another. It's like a safety belt in a car, you don't need it until you do - ask Trevor Rees-Jones.
@@stephenphillips740 The only time I'm not sure about him, is when he's working on the foredeck without a harness on.
Not as risky with crew on board, but single handed and one slip and the consequences could be terrible.
Erik, you saved another evening. We don’t watch TV, no Netflix, no prime bullshit - but your sailing adventures. Great cinema as always. Thanks!
Absolutely agree. We are the same.
hehe jeg ser ikke på NRK heller, så det er bra de fremdeles får lisenspenger via skatten.
Couldn't agree with you more Malik. My phone is virtually only used for internet banking codes and never ever look at all that mass media rubbish. This channel is certainly devoid of 'bullshit', just as its title implies.
Me too
..."no prime bullshit" just sailing.
Does anyone else love the irony in the fact that this channel is called no bullshit, just sailing and yet its the most dramatic sailing channel out there? Love it lol
Erik, thanks for the amazing video. I'm from Russia. Disturbing news surrounds us and therefore I am very glad that there are still normal problems in the world and normal goals in life. Thank you for a breath of normality and happiness. The feeling of freedom is more valuable than ever. Let's take care of ourselves! And you still haven't tethered yourself on the big waves, I'm worried.
hang on tight there Yuri, we are all longing to get back to normal
Hello yuri from UK , we are all in the same boat ...wef agenda is pure po1son
Godspeed to my Slavic brethren. Praying for a quick resolution to this brothers war!
Well.well, russian, very good, can you explain why you are aware off the total madness off your “ leader” mr vlad, and it seems the majority off the russians still seems to think that russia is not atacking an independent country wich has nothing done to diserve this war, started by russia.
Yuri, my best to you from Minnesota.
It has probably been said but you might have been able to save your gennaker had you lowered it to the deck the moment you realized it wouldn’t unfurl, and fixed everything on deck before re-hoisting. But we didn’t see everything that happened so that might not have been possible. Great videos!
Your videos improve yearly, and I always look forward to watching them.
To improve gut health, you could try cutting out all processed food from your diet. No Spam and Diet Coke. Cook up batches of food for the crossings and freeze then. Pasta sause, stews, etc. Take the evening meal out of the freezer when you get up in the morning and let it defrost through the day. Then heat it up at night and quickly boil up pasta or rice to go with it.
You are a good example of overcoming fears.
Hi Erik, every single handed sailor needs a snuffer or sock for a genniker/spinnaker sail. Never suffer a “wine glass” foul hoist again. Get your sailmaker to make you one while he’s repairing your black beast. Capt John.
How DARE YOU make us wait like this!!! (; ....FINALLY!!! Now we get our popcorn and Beers for a night with THE MAD VIKING!!! LOVE IT!!!! Good to see you again BROTHER!!!
It is heartening to see you show the sail ripping. Through the camera it can be hard to see the intensity of the weather. It's a good lesson in how powerful those spider-silk thin sails can be, when even the smallest thing goes wrong with them.
It is also a rare gem that talks about positive mental attitude and can actually use it and find it when something that frustrating happens.
I have come to your channel via Patrick Laine's sailing channel, and I love it! I thought I'd start with the latest video to see what you're up to now then I'm going back to the beginning to watch each and every of your adventures in order. But this one really hit home with me! I also have ulcerative colitis so I can assure you I know exactly what you go through when it knocks you flat like that. But what really hit me was the issue with your jaw, the locked jaw, the infected muscle spasm and the realignment/misalignment of your teeth. I'm going through the EXACT same thing right now! I even have the same biteplate from my dentist to sleep with. The painkillers and muscle relaxants aren't helping me, what I really feel I need is to get away, let the wind blast the cobwebs out of my head and let nature heal my soul again. I'm glad you're able to it. By the way, I have not had covid that I'm aware of, but I did have one vaccine injection, it put me straight in hospital, UC flared up like hell and I've had nothing but trouble since, including the jaw problem now. I wonder if it's all related to that stupid virus. Anyway, happy sailing. I'm looking so forward to coming along (virtually) on your adventures. ⛵ Much love from South Africa 🇿🇦
Hey Eric! Love your adventures. Just a note on the Ulcerative Colitis. I suffered for 25 years and I talked to Mike McCready, the guitar player for Pearl Jam who runs a Chron"s Colitis foundation here in Seatlle, where we both agreed that we had the same experience with ending UC. The secret? We quit drinking alcohol. I believe it kills the bacteria in the human gut. After I quit I had only a few bouts with UC and then it diminished to occasional battles with IBS which are easily controlled with proper diet. Now I have no more problems than any other person.
I know it's a giant step. I know there's no science to support it and the story is completely anecdota,l but I believe it's what made the difference. What really clues me in to you is that you, Mike, and I are all the exact same body type. Lean and physical guys who are really mentally aware. Anyway, Good Luck with it. I hope you get better.
Great video again. Regarding the genakker, always keep the jib up and hoist it behind the jib. Host the halyard from the back of the boat so you can immediately pull on the sheet to get the sail under control. Drop the jib as soon as the genakker is under control.
Your channel is so real, that's what makes it fascinating. Reality on a sailing channel is a rarity. Love it.
Glad your health is better Erik. Another inspirational video.
No safety line - makes me nervous Erik! Enjoying the rest enormously, thank you for the video. Phil, Suffolk, u.k.🇬🇧(you must have survived - posted this 6june24🙂
Looks lie a comfortable boat for one person. Big enough for comfort and safety, small enough to manage alone. Great video stay safe
Good job Erik! Warm regards from the European South. Wishing you "tail winds and calm seas" (translated Greek expression :) )
You Honor the long tradition of great Norwegian sailors. As Portuguese we know what it means to sail the seas towards the unpredictable. Good trip and good winds...A hug from Portugal
Best sailing channel on youtube. My sailing adventures are on a local lake in a 17' DS1 O'Day sailboat, and the other day had a jib wrap around itself around the forestay as we were tacking in a stiff breeze (15 knots). Wound up in irons, and my crewmate had to climb up on top of the cuddy to free up the jib which was flapping furiously. No harm done, but it was what I call "a moment of truth."
Fekk, that escalated quickly! Never mind, you're going to be fine. Sympathy for the jaw issue, I had a complete maxillo facial rebuild on my lower jaw and its never been the same, when I attempt to blow out a candle the curtains close...Well done Erik, this is the one.
im an Englishman living in Norway (Sande) and i found you when looking for boating adventures and this is brilliant and all i can say is well done so far! i love my little trips on my boat not so far away and so its great to watch these long adventures, good luck with everything :)
The one true sailor on youtube at the moment. I so admire your attitude and skill. Sorry about the Genaker but with a sewing machine it should be salvagable in port. A friend of mine is also from Norway living here in the US and I tease him about being a real viking like you. I may be breaking him down to buy a boat himself. If I were a younger man I would love to attempt what you do my friend. I look so forward to the next episode. Don't forget, after Greenland you have to make it to Newfoundland to be a true viking. God speed.
How not to deploy a gennaker LOL. 😄
I'd never get one without a snuffler.
I was wondering why you didn't have any content. I am glad you are better and I am so happy you are sailing again. You make me jealous. Wish I knew how to sail. That is living life to it's fullest. Can't wait for more. Take care ....
Love it when your mum comes down to see you off.
Been and Seen the Shetlands. You'll love the ruggedness Erik. 💖👍
Got to hit the sack friend. Will come back to finish this tomorrow.
Have a good weekend from Paul & Kath GB👍
Update: As promised Erik, have watched fully twice now.
Wishing you all the best with that inside issue !💪👍
Thank goodness you’re back . I missed these real no bullshit sailing videos. Cheers
Segment at 10:29 - nice view of your sail-plan, underway... looking good!! 25:46 - WOW!! Yes - a spectacular sight.
Next year you will beat Greenland! Can’t wait for more videos. All my life I have been exploring croatian coast with small motor boats, last ten years with panicking wife and two cool kids who I managed to get infected with sea life but you inspire me to try to sail. I will keep trying to get a sailboat and start learning. I know how it is when shit hits the fan and nature is so above you that you fear for your life at some point, and you are a true inspiration, balls so big you have to wear hoodie upside down. RESPECT!
From one Eric who offshore sails to another Erik who sails, you are my hero!
Only a true Eric/Erik knows the import difference between the C or K 😁
Μπορείτε αν είναι εύκολο να βάλετε και σε παλιά βίντεο υπότιτλους;
Well, it was a bit of a rocky start! Looks like you had a good time with the group from the regatta, it’s always nice to see you doing the things you love. There’s a lot of information between low vitamin D levels and autoimmune disorders, please look into it. Nutrition helps lessen many medical problems, mom has the right idea - go mom!!🎉 Well, I know the rest of your videos in this series will be amazing and don’t mind admitting I’m both happy and sad that the first one is already over. It is so good to see you back! Now, listen to your mom so you can be well. Hugs from Texas! ❤❤🌏🔥🤗🥰
Real understanding of Eric's feelings comes only when you have your own experience... Now I have. And your videos are my own lighthouse of what to expect next.
20:38-20:43 In the span of five seconds, the sheet line twice nearly looped around Erik’s neck. I’m a novice and I’ve had it happen. It was terrifying. If I’d gone overboard I wouldn’t be leaving a comment today.
Amazing how quickly things can go from sh1t-to-worse at sea, even for pros like Erik.
Sailing humbles us all 🙏🏼⛵️🙏🏼
IF YOU CAN'T FIX IT, MOVE ON AND KEEP LOOKING FORWARD...love it. Man, you're the best. I'm on board! Great video.
23:26 I am sure they are everywhere but I have to appreciate how skillful Erik's editing is!
Yes! Exactly!
It's a pleasure to sea you again, and continue your navigations. Good winds. We follow you from the Basque Country, the Basque Coast, the Cantabrian sea, Bay of Biscay.
Hi Erik, glad to see you onboard of Tessie again, it has been too long.....hopefully your medical condition is good and stays good...myself I had to sell my 51 year old sailing boat due to the crisis and prices going through the roof, as a retired soldier I couldn't afford her anymore...very painfully....but what doesn't kill you makes you stronger. Watching your videos makes me happy, I really like Tessie a lot and can only imagine how much you must love this boat after all the adventure you had together. Looking forward to part two...take good care of yourself and Tessie...👊🏻🍻
Excellent!!! I'm getting a bit jaded about youtube sailing channels, but not yours. Superb filming and no BS :)
I discovered this channel yesterday and I believe this is one of the most interesting UA-cam channels out there. I believe this channel will grow big one day!
Glad you are better. Wife and I moved our Norway plans. It will be an Arctic Circle trip. :P Take care.
PS: Use that bite guard every day. It should help with your clenching. If you don’t use it, you can break all your posterior teeth. Eventually.
Suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope. Nice to have you back, looking forward for these great documentaries!
Dang, so sorry about the beautiful sail. Can’t believe the power of that 50mph gust. Nice job 👍 of not getting it too tangled in the generator prop. Watching the great adventure from Tennessee
I now know why the Vikings were masters of the seas for so long. Safe voyage Erik.
I have the same hernia and just had a flare-up myself - 3 times to the Emergency Room in 4 days, so I feel your pain. Keep sailing my friend.
Such a pleasure to have watched your latest adventure!! 30 minutes went by far to quickly. While chatting to my partner this evening about your films, she suggested I to should make a film about my sailing exploits. Titled.....Just Bullshit No Sailing. Looking forward to the next video.
Erik - still the best sailing channel on UA-cam by far - and you don't even wear a bikini. I love your honest, warts and all approach. Please keep it up.
I loved that gennaker! Gave you and Tessie a powerful look when you flew it in the past
3rd time is a charm. Great start to your voyage. I'm glad you sorted out the medical troubles and are back at sea.
Hey Erik been watching your videos for years, and now I finally got my own sailboat and going on my own adventures soon. Thank you for doing what you do o7
Finally in the way again, I was really waiting for this. But yeah maybe to late as cold weather is coming soon. I am booked now. The coolest sailing channel on earth.
Love your channel mate, thanks for showing us a part of the world we`ll probably never see.
Erik, te sigo hace mucho desde España y me encanta poder ver tus videos subtitulados en mi idioma. Gracias por dejarnos navegar contigo
Hey, Erik! I think that was the best sailing video I have ever seen on UA-cam! Very inspiring to all of us. Good luck and fair winds to you. Thanks and looking forward to Part 2.....
Always an inspiration, no matter how the 🌊adventures🌊 unfold. Thank you⚓
It's so great to see The Tough Viking back, relaxing in your natural element and giving us the best no bullshit solo sailing videos on UA-cam. But I have one big concern for your safety. You really should use a safety harness and clip onto jack lines, especially since your free hand can't hold a camera and the boat at the same time and accidents happen to us all. BTW I'm an old Contessa owner who used to have a Hydrovane both were excellent.
Sorry to hear about your bout with Ulcerative Colitis. I also have the pleasure of being diagnosed with that. Keep pushing forward!
to quote Erik from this excellent vid: “and sometimes the wind change suddenly”. A sudden wind change can come without warning, and can knock a soloist off a boat. clip in bro. like a viking would have lol
Dude I hope you have entered the competition for best sailing youtube channel. All the other popular channels seem to be after that prize but I think you deserve to win that hands down...really...and why...because there is No Bullshit.
Inspiring as always. Thankyou from Duncan, live aboard sailor on the Scottish West Coast. easily and by far the best, most authentic sailing channel on UA-cam! Well done!
Your exciting and action packed videos are always a welcome addition to my evening viewing. You're are one courageous sailor who always captures my attention. I've grown tired of watching sailing channels where they're raising kids....I tune in to watch sailing, not some baby crying for attention. Thank you for what you do.
Thank you Erik for sharing a glimpse of your life and your passion .
Hey Erik. Great video as always. A little tip about your gennaker. If you hoist it before you take down the headsail it will be hoisted in the wind-shadow of the headsail and you won't have such problems as you did. So hoist gennaker first, then take down headsail. The same applies when taking it down. Do it in the wind-shadow of the headsail. Hoist headsail first then take down gennaker.
Great to see you back Erik :)) Sorry to hear you've been in hospital. All the best mate and hope you are well. Thanks for the inspiration and the wonderful videos and the incredible footage! Cheers!
The wait for your video was well worth it...you are an incredible person your determination and mindset are to be admired...well done for your epic footage and scenary...simply amazing
I’m so happy to see that you are sailing again . It’s so wonderful the way you tell us your trip and your fight against your sickness be careful and carpe diem
Eric you are an inspiration to many, to me you bring back so many happy memories having stopped over in Lerwick on the round Britain and Ireland race, your descriptions of trepidation and exhilaration all at once are so spot on. The Gennaker.. it happens to us all having lost a spinnaker when knocked down outside cork… I feel your pain but we move on and move forward
We do it because it’s in our blood .. fear and excitement
Do the northwest passage along with Greenland visit. After that, round the world is just a few steps away dude :)
Erik, you outlook about challenges in life is great! Most do not challenge them selves enough. I like to feel life also and it makes it worth living. Sailing does make the highs really high but the lows really low. But it fills my spirit. Keep it up!
Not reading through 742 comments to see if this has been mooted already but suggest you run a 100m line off the back of the boat so you have at least a fighting chance of getting back on if you do fall off mate. Absolutely cracking content 🙂
Never a dull moment with you Erik. I enjoy your brave adventures immensely, thank you.
My sons name is Erik so you must be ok. Loved your adventure. Warm greetings from Australia and hope to see many more of your sailing trips. Thanks for posting.
Great to see you back in your element Erik. I feel like Njördr is watching you as well, with a big happy grin on his face. Good winds all the way to Greenland and back!
Finally we can watch attempt #3! I hope you recover soon from the health complications, at least you start eating Mum's salad between the junk food :-) What amazes me are drone shots at 18 knots of wiind - well done!
Man, I'm sorry for the hospitalization but I love you keep getting back in the saddle. Keep it up man. Look forward to your videos.
One of your best Erik! The start of a great adventure. Bad luck with the gennaker, but I love the way you just turned the page and moved on. Can't wait for the next episode!
The way you describe the fear of heading out and the way it turns to feeling alive and at home is spot on. Shetland is on my bucket list thanks to your videos, thank you once again for being an inspiration.
Welcome back Erik. Proud of you.
You are a great storyteller, thank you. Looking forward to next episode. The greatest adventures doesn't always goes as planned, but that's the strange beauty in it.
Greetings from Turkiye, Antalya (Mediterranean). While we wait for the summer for sailing, i feed myself with your motivating videos. Good luck and safe sailing!
Erik, your Contessa is arguably the best equipped boat on UA-cam and I would love to get a hold of one in the US and refit it to a similar level. But I've only seen them for sale in the UK.
Nice to be able to watch your videos again!
Heading for Norway and Shetland myself next year in a 7 month sail trip so I am very interested in your adventures.
Looking forward to the next episode!
Finally what I have been waiting for, I am happy that you didn't drown out there Erik.
Great to have you back. You have really made your boat a capable machine. So different from what you started with.
I don’t sail, and likely never will do these kinds of sailing adventures because of my job, but I get to live vicariously through you and your amazingly high quality content. Love the channel and thank you!
Erik Andreas is still the master seaman of them all on you tube.Wonderfull adventures at sea with his very well found Contessa 35 yacht.Keep it up Erik.
Another awsome video, thank you Erik.Living on a boat for years, i definitely can feel through the screen Erik's love for the sea and incredible landscapes . Thx again
This is a true sailing channel. Love it.
Another great adventure starts! And no adventure goes without unexpected events, right? Awesome sailing! Looking forward the next leg! Thanks for sharing with us, very inspiring.
Arik, Great channel - it would be nice to have the sailing conditions on each leg, wind, waves, sails configurations etc...
Hands down best sailing channel on UA-cam!
So sorry about losing the gennaker. RIP gennaker :(
Hi Erik, thats was a godt one, nice to have you back on UA-cam 👍😊
Greetings from Denmark
✊Nothing can stop you Erik! Not the hospital, and not the ocean. You got this!!!!!! YEA!!!!
I really love these videos, as I sit in my living room. Fantastic, it’s the the real thing. Would expect nothing less from an intrepid Norwegian!
A great sense of community within the yachting fraternity you always help each other out.
Without doubt one of the best sailing channels on the web…. Professional editing, awesome content and Erik, you at the heart of it. What a superstar. I am always left, at the end of your videos, full of anticipation for the next one. Fair winds you Viking warrior.
no meatballs!!!
We had a great crossing too Oslo to Lerwick, we arrived the day you left Lerwick
great video and nice sailing, many thanks Erik! I would suggest to try a so called "snuffer" (sock) for your gennaker, I'm using it on my 38' which I'm sailing often "almost" solo (wife is not much in sailing) and it helps a lot to avoid these situations, it also helps you a lot when retrieving it in a blow! Fair wind ciao Dirk
Thank you Erik! I live in north west BC, in Canada's fjord-land and love your content through the winter months while my own boat rests at the dock between seasons! Your content is both inspiring and extremely well produced. I hope you are well. Cheers
Great viewing and your total honestly and showing the mishaps as well as the success is so refreshing, thank you
