I once worked with a guy who had that "accent". He was married with 5 kids, not that that means anything...lol...but he once said "you can tell if someone is gay by the way they talk"....😂 I nearly pissed myself laughing....😂
he was probably a switch hitter, when I was young I went to a performing arts high school every friend I had was gay and whenI became a professional dancer with the NYC ballet every friend i had was gay. ( They all sounded like that. I am in a wheel chair now.) I am a conservative now. My dance partner sounded like The Wayans Brothers
Why do certain ethnic groups have problems pronouncing certain English words. For instance... Black people seem to mispronounce the word 50 cent vrs. 50 cents. Asian folks can I pronounce the h or o sound. Dialect and pronunciation are very important factors people use to sometimes come to the wrong conclusions. Interesting and fascinating...keep comparing groups of people and the way they speak.
I started doing that in grade school. I was always being told not to sound so angry. It took me years to get my voice back to where it doesn't sound fake and forced.
I totally agree with the talking with your hands thing, I am italian and I talk with hands enough that I have had a friend literally grab my hands and when I asked him what the hell he was doing he told me he was trying to get me to shut up.

I've always felt no, not every gay man speaks like that. But I also feel every gay man who does speak that way is doing it on purpose mainly for attention or they want you to know immediately they're gay, or they make their sexuality their entire personality.
yeah it's not like that a straight dude couldn't do the "gay voice" and use pitch variation. 99% of the time there's no need and using it would convey.. well that you're gay, and particular type of gay at that, to be frank, so it's only left for when you're relaying a talk someone else made (or portraying it), jokes etc. but look some straight dudes on purpose try to speak in a lower pitch voice than they have if talking relaxed and even get surgery to lower the voice, but really those people tend to have some sort of a mental self image problem.

I agree with you but how do you explain the young child? I think we've all seen a 5 year old before and thought " that kid is so gay" and they turn out to be... That's too young for them to understand the complex meanings behind their actions... Isn't it? I honestly don't know.
It's an upper-middle class feminine (as it, it actually came from women) urban accent. Oversocialization, seeing "the cosmopolitan" and extensions of the cosmopolitan (social media) as your roots rather than your local community, leads to this sort of catty feminine behavior and diction for some reason. Even when they type you can see it in the way they type (no capitalization ever). Maybe a lack of "gay role models" in media when homosexuality wasn't accepted led to gay men taking after influential women in media/culture.

I feel like gay men who have more of a feminine side have the "gay voice". I have gay male friends who, based on how they sound and their mannerisms, you would never guess they are gay. However, their partners are more feminine men, men whose mannerisms are more female-like. And I also know gay male couples who both have very feminine female mannerisms.

If it is societal, it wouldn't be across cultures and languages. A couple of other explanations could be an attraction adaptation, such a women do with makeup, or an adaptation to hack our belonging hardwired into us, such as the army does to promote "brotherhood" and brands do to get people to become "L'Oreal Girls" or a 69ers fan. It could also have to do with how attractive they find their own voices. In a study on weird sex kinks, one example was a gentleman that found sneezes attractive, so he would sometimes sneeze himself in a way he found more attractive. All in all, humans are weird.
It's not really considered "across cultures" and language is insignificant if the "culture" being observed is "Western" culture... Having said that, your "explanations" are great... Spot on... Take care.
I used to work in a very “gay” industry. Our PR guy had a crush on one of people I worked with and wanted to know which side he was on. When I told him I wasn’t sure and he’d have to find out on his own, the gay voice got turned up to 11. This was someone who knew me and didn’t have to put on an act around me. To see him out in the wild spreading his wings was an education.
Before the video starts, I've legitimately always wondered this. I assume it's just to feminize the male voice but idk if there's a science behind it. I'm a straight man and the only person I speak softer to is my wife. I speak to everyone else the same. Friends or not its "sup bro". I'm from Tampa and i speak with my hands.

Think of this, what in life, makes you talk and different? Naturally and unnaturally, I'm straight and I went to prison when I was young (nothing serious). When I was there I talked and acted like one of the toughest s.o.b's in the room. When I hung out with my mom I might have talked more feminine. When I was younger I was raised by women. Then there's the individuality, the fact that a person is more like the people they are friends with than the people they despise. It sounds simple but think about it. Imagine one group of people wanting to be as different from the group they despise, that they make a point to talk and act differently. All of this matters and can affect an individual or a whole group. A mob mentality is a very interesting thing to think about. I digress.
i always thought they were just mimicking black women with all the "yasss queen slay" type of talk and sass and obviously since US makes all the movies and series, gay portrayal in those just influenced the rest of the world to follow suite.
And I have another scenario. What if we was in a futuristic society when everybody was absolutely completely equal. Yes men and women had no social boundaries between the sexes. There would not be any gay accent because it would not be any need for it. Unless there was a decision by the gay community to keep up the gay accent and gay behavior in a completely neutral society. Just to say hey I'm here loud and proud.

There is two scenarios for the gay accent. One scenario is I want to stand out so I pick up a character and behavior that I want to portray. And the second scenario is they see someone that they respect that is gay and that is acting and talking a certain way so they copied that person. And there is also the scenario is I'm gay but I'm male so I should act female. So I should pick up a female way of talking and acting.
One time, I was eating really hot sauce with a bunch of people and when the gay guy tried it, he instantly lost his accent and sounded like a deep voiced black man again saying "oh sh** thats hot" lol I thought that was interesting.
I've wondered about this in the past as well, how one's sexual preference would change how they sound. Of course there are exceptions, but I'd say it's true for the majority.
I knew a dude who was a flamer and I don't mean that in a derogatory way. Yea, you didn't have to ask if he was gay. I loved that dude (no homo), because he was funny as hell. Happiest man I ever met and all around a pretty good dude.
It's definitely a social thing. My brother is gay, and has never hid the fact. Yet, a lot of the people he's known for years have no clue. He's not a "stereotype gay", well maybe a bear, but he's a big dude, has multiple piercings and tattoos, including face tattoos. He has a deep voice. When he is around other gay guys, however the accent gets really strong. It's not his normal voice, at all. He doesn't talk like that around his husband, only around other people who talk like that. It reminds me of teenagers, who will adopt different accents, depending on their friend group at school. Or, switch it up depending on which friends they are talking with.
Simple, extra feminine, very fast and overly dramatic. Female highschool valley girl teenager accent is what the average gay man sounds like, at least flamboyant ones.
I think it has to do with their personal view of how feminine they view them self and those people disproportionately identify as gay. Who knows lol, calling card is cool too😂
I've wondered "why" for a while... How can liking the same sex change your voice, body movements, etc so similarly throughout a culture.... Only logical reason would be societal/psychological, either way it's an "act".... It's definitely not natural... My only questioning of this is, how is it that you can often tell a person is going to "be" gay that is very young, in early childhood.... They often exhibit similar behaviors... Tough one.
Next door neighbors r gay. U would never know. I orig thought the one was the dad and the other was the son and the random woman who came over occasionally was the mother (there is about a 20yr age gap but they r older so its not creepy or anything). Turns out i was very wrong, they r a couple and the woman was the mother of the younger man. Lol. Some gay men just act completely normal and ud never know. Also, iv talked to my aunt who was a nurse and she said when a gay man who does have the gay voice comes out of anethesia, they dont have the gay voice anymore until they fully wake up.
it's a conscious learned mannerism, not something inherent to their vocal chords or something like that. because guess what they're genetically just the same so the gay voice has to be cultural and it is cultural, it's just part of the protocol so to speak.
I used to know this gay dude and one day his “accent” slipped, like he forgot to do it or something, and suddenly had a deep manly voice for a moment. I said “I KNEW YOU WERE FAKING THAT VOICE!”
A gay friend of mine explained this, at least from HIS pov, he sees it as annoying, attention seeking behavior. And when guys like that try to pick him up, he tells them so, and shuts them down. lol He really, REALLY hates the accent, says it makes gay guys like him, look like a stereotype. Even told me that's why he moved out of SanFran and back to NY 8 years ago.
I think I may have "gay face", in my younger years I got hit on a lot by men, was so used to it growing up just figured people like to talk to me until one day my wife, at the time, asked if I realized that dude was hitting on me and I would be like no, he was just being friendly... well after about the millionth time if this happening and her calling it out I had to start believing her lmao.
So I knew there was a "Gay Voice" or specific way that gay men would talk, but that not all of them would talk this way, but I have never met someone who was straight that talked like it and I am surprised that there is a "Lesbian Voice" too, as I have never noticed it, nor have I ever heard about it either.
Not all not all not all applies to about everything but doesn't negate things that may be in general and of course with these folk there is like what, tops and bottom and all that. The daddy and the mama if you will of the coupling. So I would imagine daddy is less likely to have that high sing song gay voice compared to the mommy. But slay queen, you go girl, honey hush. Now sashay away.
There are levels to gay voice and it's mostly not intentional. A lot of gay actors and closeted guys work to lessen the gay in their voice, but most develop it without any sort of cultural or accentual input.
There's Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual (sexually attracted to both sexes), Pansexual (attracted to someone regardless of sex or gender), Asexual (someone who isn't sexually attracted to either sex). Those are the main ones beside Heterosexuality.
This is so confusing. I asked once about the higher pitch gay voice and was told I am homophobic for asking. Since I never got an answer, I just assume its because some gay men are more of a "woman" and thus try to have a more womanly higher pitched voice. Which now that I am older I have met many gay couples and often I do see one partner tends to have a normal voice and acts more manly (so to speak) and the other has the higher pitch voice and is more womany. No judgment of course. -edit- Guess I was mostly right.
some people think sterotyping is phobic, even if it's reality based, or they're ignorant to the reality of things. like you could think that it's just a thing made up for comedy shows I guess if you never knew any. and look, thai ladyboys do the same thing with voice, regardless of how far into the thing they are(or will ever be, some of them just act like well flamboyantly gay men). I'd say cathoys but nobody knows what that word means outside of thailand and they themselves call themselves ladyboys often enough and 99.99% of them don't care nor do I care if they're working the till in 7/11.
@@lasskinn474 When I met my wife in the Phillpines, I learned about ladyboys there. So many ladyboys (and women) tried hitting on me at night when I walked by the clubs.
@@ThatShyGuyMatt yeah outside of tourist areas they're often just dancers in the traveling dance troupes(afaik the history of why there are ladyboys so much goes back to local theatre and dance troupes and all of that) or vendors or work in a 7/11 or do whatever jobs like that for a living.

A ex-friend told me when I started doing videos that I have a gay sounding voice. I don't think I do. There is a difference between having a higher pitched voice and one that comes across as more feminen in many ways.
Yup and when mentioning that not every gay man sounds like that , Actors famously often don't ir put a certain different tone when playing straight . Parsons may have not but sir McKellen certainly sounded straight.
It's survival strategy. It signals to straight males that they are not a competitor for women and thus there is no reason to square off in sometimes dangerous shows of strength.
It's all an act. There is a vid here on YT by an anesthesiologist, they said gays always wake up talking in their normal voice until the meds wear off.

I like that he kind of owns the extended s
I've wondered about this in the past as well, how one's sexual preference would change how they sound. Of course there are exceptions, but I'd say it's true for the majority.
Has to do with culture, feminine men even as kid's tend to incline to female custom's. So that's where they learn it.
Talking with the hands is different for gay men. Again a code.
I knew a dude who was a flamer and I don't mean that in a derogatory way. Yea, you didn't have to ask if he was gay. I loved that dude (no homo), because he was funny as hell. Happiest man I ever met and all around a pretty good dude.
There are guys on UA-cam who say they are gay but do not sound gay. Rubin from Rubin Report, for example.
Douglas Murray.
Of course you can still tell. Its the length of the 's's
Wish people would stop caring so much about who others prefer to sleep with.
The guy talking sounds like he has a gay voice 😂
I got a buddy like this, has a smoking hot wife and 2 teenage sons. Go figure.
My son is gay and doesn't sound like that..He's just a guy sounding like a guy from Virginia..maybe because his father was a Ranger Drill Sargent..lol
I have weak "Gaydar" also my man. 😁😁😂😂
So I knew there was a "Gay Voice" or specific way that gay men would talk, but that not all of them would talk this way, but I have never met someone who was straight that talked like it and I am surprised that there is a "Lesbian Voice" too, as I have never noticed it, nor have I ever heard about it either.
It's just a cultural affect. The LGBT+ community is, well, a community. It's not surprising they'd develop a unique accent on cultural grounds.
Not sure what I just watched...but more importantly, why
There are levels to gay voice and it's mostly not intentional. A lot of gay actors and closeted guys work to lessen the gay in their voice, but most develop it without any sort of cultural or accentual input.
There's Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual (sexually attracted to both sexes), Pansexual (attracted to someone regardless of sex or gender), Asexual (someone who isn't sexually attracted to either sex). Those are the main ones beside Heterosexuality.
Wait a minute.... so what is the difference bisexual and pansexual? There are only 2 genders to choose from..
Thali girl seems to be right. That's what I was kind of thinking too
i clicked on this video cause i ate an edible and this video is hilarious and also genuinely interesting when you’re high
Don't do drugs.
Chemical imbalance more testosterone less likely to stray
Lol this is Lonnie I have never sent you anything like this yet!!!!! lol
@@lasskinn474People tend to confuse phobic (implying fear) with disgust. Nobody is afraid of a butt pirate.
@@J.Lee83 you say that but diddy gonna get that ass and you gotta say no!
(of course it's just a regular power abuse dynamic with diddy for why one would be afraid - some people are afraid of that stuff though because it's a legit actual temptation to them)
They believe that because society tells them that. IMO
What the hell you talking about 😂
A ex-friend told me when I started doing videos that I have a gay sounding voice.
To get some milk and cookokieeess
Your opening 😂😂😂
It's survival strategy. It signals to straight males that they are not a competitor for women and thus there is no reason to square off in sometimes dangerous shows of strength.
No, it's not.
You pulled that comment out your ass huh 😂
So many weird people here that don't know how to act when a gay person involved 😂😂 some comments makes me feel like we're aliens.
What do gay horses eat? Haaayyyy
It doesn't bother me if it's kinda natural but when it's extra for no reason, it annoys the hell out of me.
It's all an act. There is a vid here on YT by an anesthesiologist, they said gays always wake up talking in their normal voice until the meds wear off.
Good god yes, there is something, but NOT with all gays. I watched a lot of Project Runway where 99% of the male designers were gay, but some were not obvious.
So it’s not a jersey or New York thing it’s an Italian thing. You just happen to have lots of Italians in Jersey and New York, but I’ve always been told it’s the Italian blood. I’ve been told if I had my arms tied to my sides I wouldn’t be able to get through a conversation, which is probably true.
No, not every single one of them have it. It's called the exception that proves the rule.
Most gay guys do NOT sound like that--I am one who completely passes as straight. You just notice the nelly gays. They stand out, I do not
