    When i go to use the vertex tool it does not extrude like you did in your tutorial it just moves the entire shape upwards. What am I doing wrong?

      From here you can enable or disable this option. Top Menu bar > View > Component Edit > Hide Rest of Model

    you used an octagonal for starters; nature formed the apples out of a pentagonal basis so you should have used a ten sided basis for a natural look
