Imagine if schoolkids in the UK were taught cookery again, and the benefit that would have given the growing reliance on convenience food. Rock cakes would be a wonderful lesson to start with - I remember making them in class as a 7 yr old.
I agree....baking and cooking are basic life skills and should be on the curriculum. Thanks.
You're a good man mate....half the Western world is suffering with inflation and recession....these recipes are a God send....all the best 👍
Thank you very much....my hope is that people will come to see that you can eat well without spending a fortune.
Next week I'm going to do your pies.. very very excited!
I don't think I've seen a rock bun in maybe 25 years
What a nice memory
Yes the rock buns are a real old school recipe....real simple to make and delicious. Thanks.
I am 73 now and you have just reminded me of 63 years ago when my Dad driving his lorry used to take me in a Transport Cafe for a Rock Cake and mug of tea, always had an RC as it was the biggest cake they sold😋
You can't beat a good rock bun....simple to make and delicious. Thanks.
These were my husbands favourite when he was alive, I used to make them 3 times a week and he’d be hovering around the oven waiting for them to come out, the smell was so good 😊, he’s been gone 10 yrs now but if I’m out and see them I have to buy one, maybe I’ll start making them again someday.
I hope you do try them.....loss is always difficult....we have to be strong.
Nice. Maybe your hubby's spirit joins you when you sit down in a cafe and enjoy a rock bun😊
Dave, these were the first things I made with my Nan over 50 years ago thanks for bringing back the memory. I'm gonna make some tomorrow.
Cheers Jimmy.
Thanks Jimmy, Hope you enjoy them.
@@BakingOnABudget hi have tried making yorkshire curd pie
They bring back memories of my Nan & Mum, who used to bake these when I was a nipper. I didn't like the fruit ones, so they would make me some with dessicated coconut, and trust me, they were absolutely gorgeous 😍
ohhh that coconut sounds yummy. thanks for sharing.
Yes...the coconut would be great....really versatile and simple recipe. Thanks.
My granny would make these but would use dark brown sugar. Oh the delight of warm treats from the oven! TY
How much desiccated coconut would you recommend.?
@@mrsem4374 Plenty
Handful of coconut and a little lemon curd in mine. Split and spread with butter, add a banana for lunch. Thanks, another winner from my favourite baker. ❤
Thanks very much.
Haven't had a rock cake in ages you have just inspired me to make them again
Great!...hope you enjoy them. Thanks.
I love baking on a budget, because that’s what I am on like many others, if they managed it during the war I am sure we can do it now ❤🙏
Yes we can....basic ingredients and a little time and effort and you can still make delicious food at a low cost. Thanks.
@@BakingOnABudget 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
I've been thinking about rock buns for a while. And here you are with another straightforward recipe. Thank you 😊
Thanks, give them a go...real easy and delicious.
Am from Kuwait 🇰🇼. Love your channel
Welcome from the UK and thanks very much
Brilliant can remember going to my grans on Sunday mornings straight out of her black oven. Cheers for the memories
My pleasure....I have those memories too...hope you try the recipe.
I first learned how to make these at school, I love them!
Thanks, hope you give them a try.
@@BakingOnABudget I shall. 👍🏻
My paternal grandmother wasn't much of a cook but had her standby recipes, which she made repeatedly. The rock cake was on top of her list. She liked to add a small amount of ground ginger and extra peel (not for me) and always seemed to have them in a tin when we visited. I will make some this morning from your recipe for old time's sake. Keep up the great recipes, most of them are a trip down memory lane and remind me of the long-forgotten recipes of my childhood.
Thanks a lot....many of these recipes were indeed made by my Nan and Great Aunt when I was a kid....so yes, a lot of nostalgia.
20,000 people coming to hear you talk and pronounce “s’s”. Love your channel good Sir.
Yessss, I'm really pleased at how the channel is growing. Thanks.
I'm pretty sure you'll smash through a million subscribers by the end of the year. Enjoy your well earned income! :)
Am off into kitchen now = rock cakes here we come. Made 2 lots of scones this week already. So glad i found you channel. You are so natural on camera like you talking to a friend. *****🍩🍪🍰
Thanks very much, hope you enjoy the rock cakes....real simple to make and delicious.
Lovely old cakes. A treat for me growing up was having them cut laterally across, buttered, and put back together. They’d invariably crumble a little but the butter would act like a glue to stick back any escaped bits. That with a cup of tea - yum.
I agree...a real simple to make treat....I always make some on baking day. Thanks.
Made and baked these on Thursday. My wife is the baker and I cook. She has never had these before and loved them.👏 She wants to know when I’m baking again 🙂 Thanks Dave 👍
🇨🇦
Thanks a lot....good to hear they went down well.

You are already pushing 25 thousand! Well deserved. 😊
Thanks a lot, hope you give the rock buns a try. And yes I'm really pleased with how the channel is growing.
Oh boy! Memories are coming back! When I was working in London, almost every morning I would stop at Katie’s to get a rock cake and a large tea. Soooooo good! Here in Canada, we don’t have these rock cakes, which is a shame… I will make a batch!
Hope you enjoy them and I hope they turn out as good as Katie's. Thanks.

I have just tried your no sugar flapjacks and you are right they are delicious. I am that one person you wanted to try baking. Thank you. Jeff B
Thanks a lot Jeff....glad you enjoyed the flapjack.
These rock cakes bring back fond memories when I visited England in the 80s as a teen. The lady I stayed with was a great baker and taught me how to bake them. Of course she taught me how to make a great cuppa tea. I made rock cakes when I returned home to BC 🇨🇦 ❤
Yes a real old school recipe and a great snack with a cuppa. Thanks.
Well this is a blast from the past - and one of the first things I learnt to bake independently, around 70 years ago! I made several different things with a basic dry rock cake mixture, sans fruit, although my father, in particular, always preferred classic rock cakes, with the more expensive _seedless_ raisins which were just becomimg widely available ...
Yes it's a real old school recipe with many variations. Thanks.
We always cut them through the middle and spread butter on them. I am going to give your recipe a try :)
Yes, same here.
And jam, of course.
😊😊😊
Thanks, hope you enjoy them.

My pleasure, hope you give them a try.
Accidentally charged too much butter but managed to save them. Love these recipes, remind me of me Nana. Thanks Dave 👍
Thanks a lot....hope you enjoy them
I got out my scale and just made these 😋 I don't keep self rising flour, so, consulting google, I upped the baking powder to a Tablespoon, used salted butter, and added 1/8 tsp of salt. They are outstanding for such a tender crumb!
Glad to hear they turned out great...thanks for watching.
I love your recipes because they use ingredients that most people always have on hand, and they are delicious!
Thanks a lot, I like to keep it simple and hope that many people can try them.
This is definitely better than Starbucks! 😂 Will whip this one for breakfast. Thanks!
They were really delicious, hope you enjoy them. Thanks.

This is a super recipe. I’m not familiar with rock cakes as they seem to be an English thing, not too unlike scones which I love. Super simple and seemingly delicious. What a great combo! 😋
Also congratulations on your growing channel. No surprise there.
Thanks very much....yes similar to a scone recipe but a bit sweeter....delicious.
This was the 1st thing i ever made in the 1st house i ever had. From a be-ro book given to me. They were huge 😂. Thanks Dave for the reminder ❤

So glad I found this channel! Your recipes take me back to my younger days growing up in England and summer hols in N. Wales...the train ride was always so special...my grandparents would always let me choose a baked good at the station cafeteria for the trip! You've got me baking again...all the traditional loaves and buns! Thank you!!
My pleasure....great to hear that you are baking....loads more recipes to come. Thanks.

My late mum used to make these. We christened them “mum’s buns”. Made mine this week. Used sultanas and glacé cherries. Ran low on sugar so used coconut sugar left over from another recipe turned out lovely and the coconut sugar came through in the taste. Thanks for another simple recipe that works.

Looks yummy I will be making them 😋
Thanks a lot, hope you enjoy them.
So glad I stumbled across this guy. Great recipes!
Thanks very much.
You’d never get a fresh rock bun in Starbucks! You can only get highly processed, overly sweet, expensive ‘treats’ from them, mass produced in a factory. I remember making these in ‘home economics’ classes at school - more years ago than I’d care to remember. A simple, delicious treat, warm from the oven, with butter and maybe some strawberry jam. Perfection
Thanks a lot.....and your right anything made by a machine in a factory is off my menu. Hope you give the recipe a try.
Thanks for sharing! I'd forgotten about these. The grandaons are coming for a sleepover this weekend and it will be lovely to back them together.
Thanks I hope you and our grandsons enjoy baking and eating them.
I love your channel. I struggle with pain every day and find laborious tasks beyond me so I basically stopped cooking much and stopped baking altogether because it was overwhelming. BUT - your channel has shown me some delicious things that I can make quite quickly and easily on a good day, with little fuss. I can now enjoy a little baking here and there so thank you!!
Thanks very much....hope you can manage the rock buns...real simple to make and delicious.
I made them and they are delicious! Please keep up this great channel as it’s really helpful!
My mum used to make these all the time love this Chanel and very informative all recipes delicious
Thanks a lot, hope you give them a go.
it was my job as a kid to make Rock Cakes every sunday. I havnt made them for over 45 years. I would prefer mine with NO extra sugar on top before cooking, be too sweet for my liking, but you have inspired me to make them once more. thank you
After a 45 year absence....I hope your rock buns turn out delicious. I'm sure they will. Thanks.
First thing I ever made at school, going to make your lovely recipe tomorrow…. to remind me of the days in domestic science.
