I remember making these in my first domestic science class. Yes that’s what it was called in those days. In my school we had a two storey science block that contained two fully furnished one bedroom flats. We learned how to budget, shop, cook, clean, wash and iron. We also leaned how to sew including make do and mend. We where also taught personal hygiene and it didn’t matter how much the clothes cost you where wearing as long as they were clean, pressed and your shoes polished. It’s what was called putting your best foot forward. It really was the first steps into adulthood. I taught my children these things from a early age and they have done well.
Same here, I was at school in Addlestone Surrey in the early 60s, and did more or less the same. First thing in sewing was to make our yellow gingham apron and head band, then make our blue gingham blouse & skirt as part of our Summer uniform. Oh yes, we too made Rock Cakes as one of the first things we made in domestic science. I consider that we had good training and Rik, a lot of what you make is so familiar and brings back such good memories - Thank you, and Take care.
I haven’t made these for many years…back in the day my granddaughter used to “help” make them with me. We would stand the mixing bowl in the sink and let her mix - we used a chair for her to stand on. My husband would nip outside and film her through the kitchen window. A mini “Mary Berry”. Happy days…🏴🇬🇧

This brings back memories Rik, Saturdays was always baking day in our house growing up. Every week we’d help Mum bake Scones, Rock Cakes, Iced Honey Buns (like a sort of ginger cake), fairy cakes & melting moments (a sandwiched melt in the mouth shortcake type biscuit) & a Victoria sponge if we were having visitors. It sounds a lot, but there were eight mouths to feed plus visitors most Sundays. Thanks for sharing 🙏 & taking me on a wee unexpected trip down memory lane Rik! Xx 😊👨🍳👌🍰🧁😋💖

Talking of rock cake memories---When I was 21 I found myself in Liverpool Prison (Walton) We often got a rock cake for supper, along with a mug of unsweetened tea. We were lucky if we found a currant in our bun!
Rock Cakes were certainly a big part of my Australian growing up, back in the 50s-60s - and I still make and enjoy them!! And yes, they were an early lesson in school "Home Science" classes too, one of the few in which all students were successful, LoL!! Whereas Mum used either Dates OR Currants and glace Cherries, I tend to use glace Ginger, Mixed Peel and Currants and also wholemeal Flour + LASHINGS of Butter :) Ah, the "good old days" ......... 😂 RjB

I live in Texas in the United States. There's a bakery that sells these under the name "Russian Rocks" . They are my favorites. Thanks for the recipe, Rik!❤
Talk about going back in time! Those remind me of my Grandmother's Rock Cakes, especially seeing those raisins. She used to put a wee bit of orange zest into her's as well, and I can still remember rubbing some butter on them and having a nice cuppa tea with them. I'm going to have to make some now. Thanks Rik!
these are so good. I make em with some dates soaked in cofee/rum, toasted pumpkin seeds, slices of almonds, chopped dried apricots, chopped pecans and walnuts, then fill to a cup with some fine chopped raisins makes for a great sconey, cakey, spicey... yum :) thanks for recipe!
I have never had these before so I look forward to making buttermilk flavoured biscuits with so much winter dried fruits and of course slavering on the butter. Until I was about 40 I had never had dried cranberries and that is odd given cranberries are grown in abundance in Canada. And a tasty use for the British mixed warm spices.
Growing up in the US, my introduction to rock cakes was Harry Potter, although not the best introduction as Hagrid's were a bit more rock than cake. They look yummy.
They look amazing! I remember these. Really love old style cakes, My all time favourites are Traditional Bread pudding and London Cheesecake. Don’t know if you’ve tried them, but they are so traditional. I remember them from 50 years ago! The London cheesecake was always known as cheesecake, until the nowadays cheesecake came out, so they had to put London in front of it so everyone wasn’t confused, which is funny, as it doesn’t contain any cheese! Cheers Rik, another great recipe!
@@simonbaker5972 Crikey! That sounds rather like what was called (in Western Australia), Napoleon Cake - where the pink icing was decorated not with coconut, but with a green and a red diagonal stripe - I adored it!! 😂 RjB
Ooh, Bread Pudding was fabulous. Couldn't stand the more common "Egg Custard" version, but the cakey fruity one (possibly also known as Harry Lauder's Wedding Cake??) was excellent!! 😁 RjB
Rock buns were the bane of my childhood! My mother made them and she and my sister loved them! I did not! I hated the craggy rough edges , the mixed spice and raisins. To this day I avoid anything with cinnamon in it! I became a proficient cake baker by my early teens so I could make anything but rock cakes! Thank you for the video.

@@lorim1234 I live in Marshall. It's a small town on Hwy 80, 37 miles from Shreveport LA.
@@robylove9190 small world, I knew a preacher who used to live there :)
Thank you. Best, Rik
I grew up in Arizona, USA and we never had this lovely tradition. Closest thing to this would be oatmeal raisin cookies.
Thank you. Sounds amazing! Best, Rik
Awesome thank you
Thank you. Best, Rik
Thanks Rik!
Good memories and thanks for sharing. Thank you. Best, Rik

Fantastic! Thanks for sharing. Thank you. Best, Rik
these are so good. I make em with some dates soaked in cofee/rum, toasted pumpkin seeds, slices of almonds, chopped dried apricots, chopped pecans and walnuts, then fill to a cup with some fine chopped raisins
makes for a great sconey, cakey, spicey... yum :)
thanks for recipe!

You are very welcome. Thank you. Best, Rik
Yum! I grew up on rock buns, thanks to my gran. I haven’t made them in ages, so thanks for the inspiration. Best wishes from Oz!❤😊🇦🇺
You are so welcome! Thank you. Best, Rik
Thank You. Best, Rik
Blimey! Another recipe to die for. Thank you. 😊👍
Thank you. Best, Rik
Growing up in the US, my introduction to rock cakes was Harry Potter, although not the best introduction as Hagrid's were a bit more rock than cake. They look yummy.
Thank you. Best, Rik
Is that the one with jam and coconut? If so that is going to be made. Thank you. Best, Rik
@@BackyardChefthat's the one. puff pastry filled with a layer of jam and a frangipane sponge cake and decorated in icing/topped with coconut.
😁 RjB
You're my newest found delight, thank you Rik❤❤❤
Wow, thank you. Thank you. Best, Rik
With you there on cinnamon it's awful, I just leave it out 👍
I loved reading, thanks for sharing. Thank you. Best, Rik
Too overpowering in most recipes, certainly has to be cut right down in most of them. As you say - If you don't like don't use. Thank you. Best, Rik
Thanks for sharing, I'm in the Caribbean my mom used to grate a dry coconut and add it to her rock buns
That is awesome! Thank you. Best, Rik
I haven’t made these since home economics class at school and I’m 73 now.
A while ago - great memories! Thank you. Best, Rik
Wow must be getting on 30years since I had some, almost forgot they existed! Well that's my plan for tomorrow sorted.
Nice one! Thank you. Best, Rik
