ROCK cakes / Buns TRADITIONAL BRITISH treat
Вставка
- Опубліковано 27 вер 2024
- Rock cakes, also known as rock buns, are a traditional British treat that originated in the United Kingdom. They have a rustic appearance, often resembling small, rough rocks, hence their name.
Rock cakes became popular during World War II. Due to food rationing, ingredients like eggs and sugar were in short supply, and rock cakes required fewer of these than many other baked goods. This made them an ideal treat during the wartime period.
They were promoted by the British government as a way to use fewer eggs and less sugar while still providing a tasty baked item. The Ministry of Food even included them in their wartime cookbooks.
While rock cakes are quintessentially British, they became popular in other parts of the world due to the British Empire's influence, spreading to countries like Australia and New Zealand.
Rock cakes have a crumbly texture on the outside with a slightly softer interior. They are often compared to scones but with a coarser texture and more rugged appearance.
Traditionally, rock cakes are made with flour, baking powder, sugar, butter, mixed dried fruit, eggs, and sometimes spices like cinnamon or mixed spice. They can be made with variations, including different types of dried fruits, nuts, or even chocolate chips.
Rock cakes have been mentioned in various British literary works. For example, they are featured in J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter series, where Hagrid makes rock cakes for Harry, Ron, and Hermione.
Rock cakes are often enjoyed as part of an afternoon tea spread in the UK, alongside other traditional treats like scones, finger sandwiches, and various pastries.
Rock cakes are cherished for their simplicity and the nostalgic comfort they bring, reminiscent of simpler times and home baking.

This took me back 50 odd years to when I made them at school. I think they were the first thing we cooked in home economics class.
Thanks for sharing, great memories. Thank you. Best, Rik
Love you mom❤❤
I am from Malaysia and I made them in school, too.😊
@@coolrb4506 Lovely! Thank you. Best, Rik
Memories or what ! I can remember 60 years ago coming home from a day in the park to the wonderful aroma coming from the kitchen knowing my Mum had made a batch of rock cakes and having to wait patiently or maybe not so patiently for them to cool down. Thanks Rik for a glimpse of happy times .
Thanks for sharing, great memories. Thank you. Best, Rik
From Australia....oh yes! I am now in my 70's and Nana used to cook them....just out of the oven with butter on them. I Can taste them still. Thank You😊
Fantastic! Thanks for sharing great memories. Thank you. Best, Rik
Please how much flour and butter
@@JeanetNdlovuCheck the description box ... All there !😊
A real blast from the past, my mother use to make these for a treat on a Sunday for tea. That was about 68 years ago....😊
Thank you. Best, Rik
Oh what fantastic memories these bring back!!!! Making these with my nan in London and she would tell us how she used to make these during the War and have them as a Sunday treat!!!! Thank you Rik 😊
Thanks for sharing. Joanne. Nice to have the memories. Thank you. Best, Rik
All I need is a cup of tea 🫖 Thank you Chef!
Agreed! Thank you. Best, Rik
Yes, please! Chocolate and cranberries for me! Plus some walnuts. I can hardly wait!
Thank you. Best, Rik
Good memories. Cranberries with dried apricot and orange zest would be tasty.
Yes indeedy! Thank you. Best, Rik
Brings back lovely memories of making these at junior school with our teacher Mrs Regan, must be about 40 years ago, but we enjoyed cooking with her, thanks for another great recipe Rick.
Thanks for sharing. Thank you. Best, Rik
Another old school simple recipe they taught us in school that you could maybe do too was Coconut Pyramids!
I used to love them...
I have a recipe here - with chocolate on. Is that how you remember them? Thank you. Best, Rik
@@BackyardChef the ones we made didn't. But I have seen people half dip them in chocolate. They was made with condensed milk, that was the main thing as I've seen some recipes without it
@@wildwine6400 Thank you. Best, Rik
I grew up on rock cakes and when my children were small in the 80s they grew up on them too but since they grew up and left home I haven't made any anymore. Probably because there is just the two of us and we would then have to eat them all!!!! Maybe I should make some again when my grandson comes over. He would love them. In fact, I feel like some right now.
Go on make some - for old times. Thank you. Best, Rik
Lovely memory of my grandma making these. She never made any other cake. Never weighed anything and always put I. Loads of glacé cherries. Happy days!
Thank you. Best, Rik
All the memories in a short time. Wonderfulness!!🤪😃❤️
Thank you. Best, Rik
I have made these, not as good as yours but still a nice treat with a cuppa thank you for reminding us how good the old recipes are xx
"Like a fairy on a rock cake," my Salopian grandmother used to say, describing frenetic activity. Cheers.
Cheers, Paul. Thank you. Best, Rik
I’ll be making these for sure.
My husband mum from England & he loves when I make his childhood cakes & traditional sweets.
Thank you!
You got this sorted, well done! Thank you. Best, Rik
This brings back memories Rik, Saturdays was always baking day in our house growing up. Every week we’d help Mum bake Scones, Rock Cakes, Iced Honey Buns (like a sort of ginger cake), fairy cakes & melting moments (a sandwiched melt in the mouth shortcake type biscuit) & a Victoria sponge if we were having visitors. It sounds a lot, but there were eight mouths to feed plus visitors most Sundays. Thanks for sharing 🙏 & taking me on a wee unexpected trip down memory lane Rik! Xx 😊👨🍳👌🍰🧁😋💖
There was always a baking day when I grew up - loved it - ours was usually Sunday - mum would make all sorts of cakes - big on Sunday tea and the rest for the week. Thanks for sharing. Thank you. Best, Rik
@@BackyardChef Happy memories Rik ☺️, did your household have minor fights over cleaning the bowl out & liking the spoons as well, or was that just us? The only time we willingly volunteered to be washer upper!😉😂🤣 But we always did the dishes for Mum at night, but drying was the more popular of the two, aversion to dirty pots & brillo pads!😆😂🤣🤣
Rock bun was the first thing my sister learnt in her cookery class and we her siblings enjoyed it. And we looked forward to her weekly cookery class.❤
Thanks for sharing!! Thank you. Best, Rik
I think we called these Hermits. I remembered walnuts too.
Thank you. Best, Rik
My mum wasn’t a baker but my auntie Nan was a brilliant baker, scones ( my favourites) and her rock cakes were devine, I was always asking my mum when we were going to visit my auntie so I could ask her if she would make some scones or rock cakes for us, aye fond memories. I miss both my mum and auntie who I loved dearly, but life goes on, thanks for the memories Rik.
Thanks for sharing. Thank you. Best, Rik
Memories lane. I was young then. Now a senior. 1st thing we learned to bake in school.
Thank you. Best, Rik
The only thing missing is a good brew to wash it down- perfect. Thanks Ric ❤
Thank you. Best, Rik
I haven’t had those buns since I was a kid , thanks for jogging the memory ❤🇦🇺🐨🐨🇦🇺❤️
Thank you. Best, Rik
I first made this in my Home Science cooking class when I was 14yrs old and now I'm 68 and still bake rockbuns.
Lovely! Thank you. Best, Rik
I love making these with the grandchildren. But they are quite particular about what kind of dried fruit they like. So I let them put in their favourites.
Always good to let them chuck in what they like - keeps them interested! Thank you. Best, Rik
Memories indeed!! I am 85 years old and mom used to make them for us regularly!! Yummy!!! (SA)
That is awesome! Thank you. Best, Rik
I haven’t made these for many years…back in the day my granddaughter used to “help” make them with me. We would stand the mixing bowl in the sink and let her mix - we used a chair for her to stand on. My husband would nip outside and film her through the kitchen window. A mini “Mary Berry”. Happy days…🏴🇬🇧
Thanks for sharing - these memories need keeping alive. Thank you. Best, Rik
Turn that film into digital and post them on UA-cam (public or private, just for family). 💖🌞🌵😷
@@suzisaintjames not sure how to do that. Good idea, I’ll mention it to my son! Thank you.
@@puppy1584, there's "kits" that have cables to connect your old device to your computer. It also has software that records the "film" to your hard drive as you play the "movie". Don't be discouraged if the kit doesn't go directly to your camera... You may know of an intermediate step that will get you there... Maybe camera to VCR to kit.
There are services that do this for you, especially if the "film" isn't playable. But it's fun to watch the movie during the transfer.
@@suzisaintjames blimey suzi, it’s like listening to my son! What I ought to do is “learn the lines” and astound my boy what a clever mum he has! 🇬🇧
Rik as kids we had these for supper with a cup of drinking chocolate , break bits off and dip it in the chocolate 👍
Oh yes! Thank you. Best, Rik
Ah, mate. This recipe brought back memories...when I went to 'big' School in 2001 I had to take food technology lessons. One of the cooking recipes we did was indeed rock cakes. Delightful little things! marvellous matey!
Ha ha ha, food technology - we called it cooking lessons - then home economics, how times change. Thank you. Best, Rik
Was one of the first things they had us make at school 😃
Me too!

Userze good old memories. I didn't go to any domestic class but mine was at home from mum.I lived on a farm and mum baked in the old fashioned coal stove. No recipe but a little of this and that.Dad worked in a dairy so plenty of milk and butter to have lovely goodies. Mum made fruit cakes but will try this recipe because I love fruit bakes.Thank you love old fashioned bakes.lots of love from Cape Town,South Africa.❤❤❤❤❤
Oh wow! Thank you. Best, Rik
This is one of the only recipes I remember my mum making with me and my sisters as a child. From a big yellow Margaret Fulton cookbook. The other was a chocolate slice and the other pikelets. I was just thinking about finding this recipe yesterday so I could make it with my daughter. Thanks for posting!
❤ from Australia
Thank you. Love to Australia. Best, Rik
I haven’t made these since home economics class at school and I’m 73 now.
A while ago - great memories! Thank you. Best, Rik
Looks like we all grew up with these,I know I did.Wasnt my favorite,I remember currants in the ones my Mom made, and though I like raisins, currants not so much.😊
Aye, they were a staple all around. Thank you. Best, Rik
Growing up in the US, my introduction to rock cakes was Harry Potter, although not the best introduction as Hagrid's were a bit more rock than cake. They look yummy.

Stellar… ❤ watching you enjoying the fruits of -labour
Thank you. Best, Rik
We were taught these in our domestic science class.Delicious!
Thank you. Best, Rik
They look amazing! I remember these. Really love old style cakes, My all time favourites are Traditional Bread pudding and London Cheesecake. Don’t know if you’ve tried them, but they are so traditional. I remember them from 50 years ago! The London cheesecake was always known as cheesecake, until the nowadays cheesecake came out, so they had to put London in front of it so everyone wasn’t confused, which is funny, as it doesn’t contain any cheese!
Cheers Rik, another great recipe!
Is that the one with jam and coconut? If so that is going to be made. Thank you. Best, Rik
@@BackyardChefthat's the one. puff pastry filled with a layer of jam and a frangipane sponge cake and decorated in icing/topped with coconut.
@@simonbaker5972 Crikey! That sounds rather like what was called (in Western Australia), Napoleon Cake - where the pink icing was decorated not with coconut, but with a green and a red diagonal stripe - I adored it!! 😂 RjB
Ooh, Bread Pudding was fabulous. Couldn't stand the more common "Egg Custard" version, but the cakey fruity one (possibly also known as Harry Lauder's Wedding Cake??) was excellent!! 😁 RjB
Oh yeah this is a must try! It would be so good with my coffee in the morning ❤
Oh yes! Thank you. Best, Rik
Love rock cakes and yes it takes me back to memory lane. I like the addition of Cranberries which I love. Thankyou Rik.
Thank you. Best, Rik
Hi Rik, YOU ARE A STAR!! Thank you, thank you, thank you!!! This is definitely going to be my next bake!!! (HAPPY DANCE) 🎉🎉🎉 I CANNOT WAIT TO BAKE SOME! We eat them just plain with a cuppa! I used to bake these with my ghenghi (grand mother). Along side cheese scones (hers were THE BEST!,) and ginger nuts. Yummmmmmmm
Thank you. Best, Rik
The other day I thought I'd make 'Coffee Kisses' another childhood recipe. My husband loved them. Then I decided I will try 'Rock Buns' next time I bake. Then up popped your video. I describe yours as a festive rock bun, so your recipe it the one I will make. However I don't have apple cider so would the white wine vinegar do? Do you remember the Stork Margarine cookbooks? McDougall's flour cookbooks, Bero flour and many more that you could write off for enclosing a postal order - remember them? All of them had great recipes in. 👍👍 Happy Days!
yes, any kind of vinegar would work, even lemon juice. just to curdle the milk. I sometimes use watered down yogurt when I don't have buttermilk.
Any vinegar or lemon juice, lime juice will turn to buttermilk. Thank you. Best, Rik
Thank you. Best, Rik
Simply wonderful, thank you.
Thank you. Best, Rik
Lovely yummy, I also remember the Eccles cakes that were completely different from today's.
Thank you. Best, Rik
@user-jr9hy1xk7j In what way were Eccles cakes different? I would love to make the older version.
Talk about going back in time! Those remind me of my Grandmother's Rock Cakes, especially seeing those raisins. She used to put a wee bit of orange zest into her's as well, and I can still remember rubbing some butter on them and having a nice cuppa tea with them. I'm going to have to make some now. Thanks Rik!
Good memories and thanks for sharing. Thank you. Best, Rik

These remind me of the cookies my grandmother made called Michigan Rock cookies. They're very cakey and she did once tell me these were a British style cake cookie so I wonder if they are almost the same thing. She was the only one to successfully be able to make them right. The only difference that I see in the cookies compared to what my grandmother made was she used to add walnuts in it. By the way I'm from Pennsylvania, United States
Thanks for sharing. Loved reading. Love to Pennsylvania. Thank you. Best, Rik
Dried cranberries are an overlooked and versatile ingredient. Be it sweet or savory. When used in moderation, they bring something to the plate that is both unexpected and delicious. I don't remember these at all, but I can see why they do for you. These look really good, thanks Rik :)
Agreed! Thank you. Best, Rik
Love them warm out the oven. Thanks for making 😊
I agree! Thank you. Best, Rik
Followed your recipe and these rock buns are the best I've ever made, thank you Rik, from the UK.

We all have our own tweaks fir these firm favourites.
I can not keep up with my
son in law who adores them any time we see each other a empty box exchanged for a full box....I have suggested he makes them himself.
I now have a secret stash of them in freezer to just warm in oven for those days I really can't be bothered baking but they appear with the words oh any Rock Cakes on go😂😂😂
Thanks for sharing! I love it - keep that freezer full! Thank you. Best, Rik
Never heard of them. But they look good and easy to make so I’ll try them.
Thank you. Best, Rik
Rock Cakes were certainly a big part of my Australian growing up, back in the 50s-60s - and I still make and enjoy them!! And yes, they were an early lesson in school "Home Science" classes too, one of the few in which all students were successful, LoL!! Whereas Mum used either Dates OR Currants and glace Cherries, I tend to use glace Ginger, Mixed Peel and Currants and also wholemeal Flour + LASHINGS of Butter :) Ah, the "good old days" ......... 😂 RjB
Sounds great. Thank you. Best, Rik
My mother used to make rock cakes, she'd count how many there were on the cooling rack. My Dad and I used to help ourselves, and tell fibs about how many we'd eaten, thanks for the memories!
Ha ha ha, love it! Thank you. Best, Rik
Bring back the old memories of cooking lesson at school abt 60 years ago. Definately going to try this recipe. Thank u chef.
Thank you. Best, Rik
I used to make these to an old Scottish recipe that had dried ginger in them for a slight kick 👍 going to try yours.
Thank you. Best, Rik
You've got me wanting to try these! When I was little, my mother would occasionally make the most unappealing cookies (we're American). Tasteless lumps of oatmeal. We'd tell her to make some other cookie and she'd say, "They're not cookies, they're rock buns". Her father's family was Scottish, and apparently, they didn't bother adding the spice or fruit or anything with flavor.
Oh Dear! Thanks for sharing. Thank you. Best, Rik

OMG! Thank you for this recipe of this delectable treat. I live in Jamaica and had these a lot while growing up. I didn't know how to make them but found your video. I've done two batches all for myself in 2 weeks. I can't tell my doctor though. LOL! I love the idea of the buttermilk. I use buttermilk when I'm doing my Johnny cakes and it results the the best texture and taste. 🤗🙌🙌👍

One of my favourites to make. I use raisins, sultanas and mixed peel but I love the idea of the buttermilk and cranberries. Tomorrow's shopping list just got longer 😆 Thanks Rik.

They look so good. We called them raisin tea biscuits here in my part of the US and they were a bakery favorite.
'Mixy mixy whisky whisky' made me smile. Then I got to thinking mmm...whisky for soaking the fruit as a twist.
Have you ever made Russian Tea biscuits (short dough rolled with raspberry jam and raisins)? They're my absolute favorite.
Great suggestions I will upload soon. Best, Rik
Ooh they sound lovely

These were new to me. They seem very much like scones ?? Most important they were delicious and pretty easy to make- Thank you
Thank you. Best, Rik
Easy mostly baking powder biscuits, with sugar which makes it tea biscuits and an egg, and mixed fruit added. Yummy!
Another description could be 'drop scones', as opposed to the more common version that has you roll out the dough and either cut out rounds or form it into a big round you cut in wedges.
I have to wonder, though, remembering a recipe for a yeasted orange-cranberry bread, whether using orange juice in place of the vinegar and adding some microplaned orange peel would make a tasty variation. I'll have to get an orange and try it out.
Thank you. Best, Rik
