What I like about this song is the fact that it's not a coincidence that it was produced on their greatest hits album; he's not singing about someone that did him wrong sometime in his life, I think he's singing about music labels and how they think that because they decide what's best for the public Mike is expressing how nobody controls what he writes. And the tracks before this song are there before it to dish it out.
"With friends like you, who needs enemies?" This line is gold. LOOOVE Social Distortion, the guys never fail to impress me! I think I was still in school when this one came out, and I remember it hit some strings very near and dear to my heart because I related to the song so well.
I've been looking for this song forever. I remembered it was by social distortion but couldn't remember the name of the song or how it went. But I'm glad I finally found it.
This song is brilliant; they released it on their Greatest Hits studio album, and on the last track you have a brand new song. Whats great about the songs interpretation is that its actually about the change of music scene and in reality they will never change theirs; they have never been a predominant punk
i learned about these guys back in highschool 25 years ago or so. i think i liked them cuz they were a breath of fresh air from the normal grunge scene that was popular in those days. one of the coolest bands ever. too bad the singer had a drug problem....
With friends like you, who needs enemies? You ain't right, you ain't never gonna be You're out of the car, I'm afraid you've been declined. You shake my hand, while you're pissing on my leg I'm cutting you loose, I don't need this misery Your soul is toxic, you ain't no friend of mine. NO!!! You talk real trash, when I'm not around To build yourself up, you gotta tear me down. You'll have to excuse me, I got better things to do You smile through your teeth, you talk out you're neck Every chance you get, you're going to stab my back Your time's run out, I've got nothing left for you. [Chorus:] I'm leaving you far behind I'm leaving you far behind Stop wasting all, all my time I'm leaving you far behind, Yeah!!! So I'm pulling out the weeds, I'm taking stock You can talk the talk, but can't walk the walk Your narcissistic ways have gotten the best of you So I'm leaving you to sink in all your glory For you and me it's the end of the story Get out of my way, I've got better things to do. [Chorus x3] With friends like you, who needs enemies? You ain't right, you ain't never going to be Your soul is toxic, you ain't no friend of mine.
I was a rock DJ back in the 90's, and I played this band constantly. The program director threatened to fire me if I kept subbing out the regular stuff for Social D : )
Never really saw them as a punk band. Been a fan forever and to me it's just straight up rock and roll, maybe even a bit of rockabilly, but no real "punk " to Social D even if Ness claims they were. Great music.
damian andres I've listened to that Descendants song. Mike Ness don't owe anybody nothing. It's like saying he owes BMX money because his Harley has 2 wheels too. GTFOH
