@@pretendphilosopher2300 the Bulls had a higher defensive rating and defensive rebound percentage in the whole league and it was only MJ and unlike the Rockets with twin towers who had the best defenders of their respective teams. MJ had both the highest offensive and defensive winshares of his team.
Olajuwon has the quickest hands, top 10 in steals. No center in the top 50. And we’re not even mentioning his blocks.
no one is saying he isnt a great defender, and we have no gotten to him yet since he won a ton of them, but if you are judging players their may be some that may had been overlook cause they were not in winning teams. Like the MVP is always giving to the guy that get the team to the playoff and in the 80's it would had been a center most likely as that was the key position in most teams.
Todays game the role of the center has been diminished as the league wanted more open and high scoring game with no defense that would make bull fighters smile.
Mark Eaton is my favorite basketball player of all time. I can't believe he's dead. R.I.P. to the legend.

Limited skills, but wow he could do a few things really well. I love players that find a way to succeed like he did.
To me Hakeem is the greatest two-way player in basketball history. He had the most versatile offensive skillset out of any big ever and he protected the paint while being able to bring weak side defense and read the passing lanes. The fact he's the all-time leader in blocks and also in the top-10 for steals is absolutely preposterous!
MJ is right behind him just for being able to win 10 scoring titles and being in the top 5 all-time for steals.
Could you do something like this for the decades that didn't have the DPOY award?

Bobbly Jones was a menace back then. Remember watching games where it was completely unexpected for him to come flying from off the screen to get the block but also was no surprise. Very underrated defender.

Jordan should have won in 86/87, too. He was just as energetic as he was in 87/88. Cooper had fewer defensive stats, and his defensive ratings weren't as high. Plus, he came off the bench.
I respect that. The whole "came off the bench" thing is funny, because that can be used as a pro OR a con in the argument. On one hand, he did a lot in a short amount of time, which is impressive... but on the other hand, would you rather have the guy making an impact for 26 minutes or the guy making the impact for 38 minutes??

The 1988 Bulls gave up the fewest points per game and had three 3rd best defensive rating. No one on the team besides Jordan was all defensive level player which is why he earns the DPOY
For comparison, the HOU Rockets were 13th in pts allowed and 4th in defensive rating. It’s clear to see why Jordan won it and deserved it

@@Homer-OJ-Simpson Jordan had the perfect combination of individual stats(even if you choose to level them out after the yahoo article) and defensive team ratings. And the fact he was a monster offensively gave him some bonus points. You almost never see that level of energy, hustle and athleticism on both ends of the court. Especially playing all 82 games.
@@jonoak I can look later, but there's no good defensive team, where only ONE player is all defensive team level. If a TEAM is good defensively, multiple players are and the coaches are. That's just how the game works. For instance Alvin Robertson or Wemby. They can be great alone, but team defense requires others.
I am not a Jordan fan(Lakers since 1980), but I respect what he did on the court, and he put the defensive fear in players that season from the guard position like centers do

You made some witty comments about MJ lol. You made a great case for him (and others for DPOY in the 80s). It's incredible how he was able to block so many shots. There is a great case for him to be the best shotblocking guard (though I also acknowledge the case for Wade).

Johnny, I also looked at home games of Jordan in 87-88 season and found 3 online. Two were exactly as the box scores and one was close but exact if you give Jordan the possible steals. Those were the only 3 games I could find on UA-cam during regular season. So with your 4 games which 3 were basically equal to the box stats and my 3 games where 2 were exactly equal, that means 5 of 7 games were equal to the box stats and 6 of 7 equal or about equal if you count some of the possible steals and blocks.
The point is that for article to have 6 games and all 6 be wildly off but 6 of 7 from other games were identical or near identical means the author cherry picked

Hell yeah!! I appreciate that feedback. Again, that's what I suspected. The 6 games are horrifically tracked, theres no disputing that... but he did make it seem like it was a season long issue. That seems like sketchy agenda driven research to say the least.
I'm sure theres A LOT of guys where you could find 6 of their games in a season that were terribly tracked statistically.

And once we do that, why not go through every year, for every award? It is casting doubt on the stats and history of the game, and all for what? Lebron's ego. He is willing to destroy the game of Basketball for his own legacy.
Would he like it if people went through his games and double checked his stats? I think turnabout is fair play. I'd especially love to look at his assists, as well as all the uncalled offensive fouls he commits.

I disagree. Between the 86-87 and the 90-91 seasons Hakeem had the highest defensive rating yet won zero dpoy.
That Hakeem steal line is insane. I looked up the annual league leader in steals and since then, his 2.6 was better than 19, including the last 15. Chris Paul was the last to top that number in 08-09. I also thought for a second that you were gonna give one to Bill Laimbeer.

Alvin Robertson and Sidney Moncrief had something in common other than being great defensive players! They both played for Eddie Sutton at the University of Arkansas who always emphasized defense from his players. Both players were great defenders who had amazing instincts on defense that playing for Coach Sutton helped to hone and perfect!

Even after the article came out I said even if you leveled out his stats he was still a legitimate contender for DPOY. Not just were the stats great but he had the added bonus of having both a better record and team defensive rating than someone like Hakeem which also plays a major role for voters. Even in an interview with Chris Brousard, Tom said he was still playing amazing defense in 1988. Your basically arguing that MJ's 88 DPOY season wasn't out of this world all-time elite ..it was just all-time elite.
They can't prove he shouldn't have won the DPOY, so they settle for casting doubt and demoralization. It is a classic Marxist tactic, accusing and finding fault, while not having anything better to offer.

Would love a video about the statcounters controversy as a whole. People think it was just MJ that benefited which is flat out incorrect. Stockton for instance allegedly was given a number of bonus assists as well. It’s something that would probably still be happening today if not for HD video and replay tech.
We just had the Jaren Jackson Blocks controversy. And most people believe that the refs fix games. I hate that Lebron is tugging on the thread of questioning the official stats, because it casts doubt on the entire history of the NBA, all for his ego.
To keep it fair, I want Lebron's stats to be recounted. Check his assist numbers, his steals and blocks. See how many uncalled offensive and defensive fouls he commits. Which of his awards were undeserved? How many of his points were undeserved FTs?
The fact is, Lebron knows he is not the GOAT. So he is trying to tear down others to make himself look better. Fact is, he isn't 2nd on my GOAT list. And the more he does to destroy Basketball, the more he falls. Lebron is already the Lance Armstrong of Basketball, the Barry Bonds of Basketball, just by the damage he has done, and is doing, and will continue to do to the game of Basketball.
I don't think Jordan was more motivated per se. I think he was given the green light to roam. And he was good help defense, and his team was good help defense, which kept his MANY gambles hidden.
He was probably the greatest defender that season.

Seems like padding stats for stars at home was common in the era, quietly permitted or encouraged by the league to help market the game. So can still compare Eaton and Olajuwon's numbers, but makes it harder to compare them with earlier or later eras

Sorry, but I have to disagree with you on this one. Strongly. In my opinion, stats mean very little. Impact is everything. The same logic is applied by those who challenge Steve Nash's MVP awards. He transformed the Suns into a contender overnight, got the best record in the league, who cares if Kobe scored more or whatnot. Same for DPOY. If you block the opponent three times in the same play, but then he gets the ball back and scores anyway, you got sky-high defensive stats, but you didn't even get a stop. That kind of defense has no impact. That's why team success factors into DPOY considerations. Did your defense win games? If not, do you deserve to be the DPOY? For example, what do Alvin Robertson's stats mean when the Spurs lost regardless? Contests, psychological effects of effective defense, forcing isos, etc. are not captured by stats but are every bit a part of good defense as steals and blocks.

I'm a Jordan contrary. But I think you need to rebook at what the rules were in 88 as opposed to what they are now Johnny. I noticed that the way you described the rules for Jordan in his time are the same as how they are in Mt 2k23 game. I can poke the ball free but if someone else get it, it's still counted as a steal by me. Whereas back then, I can poke the ball free but the person that gets it gets accredited with the steal.

That's a question for my editor tbh. It's probably because my major point was that MJ was the best defender regardless of inflated stats, so he probably thought why even post the stats. I'm just guessing though. I'll ask him next time we get on the phone together because now I'm curious. lol

Defenders are some of my fav players. My all time fav is Hakeem The Dream. In this era of overblown bias to offense and charismatic personalities and influencers, It's the no nonsense defender hustle plays and grit I appreciate!

I plan on looking into a lot of it. Statistical inflation has always been on my mind since the rules have been changing through eras. With that said, if Mark Eaton is listed at 5.6 Blocks and it was actually something like 2.2, that’s definitely something to consider and something I wanna know 🤣 Stay tuned….
@@jonnyarnett I think it sets a dangerous precedent. If we gotta go back and redo all the stats, then the history of the NBA is in danger. And for what? This is exactly what Lebron wants, for people to question and mistrust the Legends of the past, while conveniently failing to redo his stats, and the stats of modern Legends.
I really find fault with Haberstroh, Klutch, and mostly Lebron, for going this far to tarnish the game of Basketball and the NBA in favor of a single individual's legacy. From JJ saying that older gen players were Plumbers, to now casting doubt of MJ's stats, which just opens Pandora's box to question all stats, everywhere.
We had that scare with Jaren Jackson Jr. just a couple of years ago. And people already suspect the refs of fixing games. And now we have Lebron tugging on the threads to unravel the whole sport, just for his own selfish and misguided ambition.
And what of the impact that gambling and League/Media Favoritism have? Lebron or MJ getting calls or preference because they are Lebron and MJ. This has the potential to be like the Steroid Era for Baseball, where fans lose their trust and respect for the History of the NBA, and it never comes back.

I did a stat check on Julius('Dr. J')Erving during the '82 season and he averaged 1.7 bks & 2.0 stls a game surpassing Bobby Jones 1.5 bks & 1.3 stls a game while still avg. 24.4 points 6.9 rbs & 3.9 asts a game. So when J.A. said Bobby Jones should have won the award during the('82 season), I disagree because back then the 76ers were my favorite team and Dr. J was always a great defensive player during his prime and many people back then never gave him credit for his defense but when you look at his stats they speak for themselves!!!

As for MJ getting some statistical help from home cooking, I have no doubt about it. Stars in particular will get the benefit of the doubt on gray area cases. But I would be very surprised if Olajuwon and all the others didn't get similar help at home. So while you have to consider the issue, it is perhaps unfair to ding Jordan while assuming everyone else's stats are totally legit (not saying you do this, just a general statement). I think Jordan's DPOY was legit as by every estimate and opinion, from opponents and objective observers, he was a top flight defender in his prime.

Bobby Jones should have won the first and second of your imaginary defensive player of the Year awards. He had nearly the same amount of steals, over twice as many blocks and finished ahead on the team defensive ranking and all defensive team votes. I think he's the clear dpoy.

People like Jonny Arnett should be the ones voting for league MVP, DPOY, etc....instead we get these clown "analysts" who don't watch the game, don't understand numbers, and just want spew hot takes be the one with power to vote.

My personal opinion is most sports have there tricks on pocket picking who they want to be notice to get the fans to watch ( all about getting $) and some awards are justified and others are not. Still there is a voting system that’s not necessarily means will be fair. I agree with what has been explained here but it is what it is. And about MJ dpoy award I see that being the norm to give such award to a center will only make since when a guard position player defensively shows can be a nightmare for other on D most definitely deserves the award. It’s amazing when a “small man” can lock down an opponent vs it is expected for the “big man” to do so back in the 80s. Awesome job my friend 😊

41/41 of DPOY winners teams made the playoffs - and I don’t really have an issue. If there’s 2 guys who are close for the award - 1 guys team won 65 games and the other guys teams less than 30 - I have zero issue with the benefit going to the guy who’s team won a shit tonne
Stat's, especially on defence, don't mean that much. You can't give a defender on poor teams the dpoy. Communication is so important on D. And any team with even s good defence will be a winning team, at least in the 80s. If your the best defender, your team should be good defensively.

It's easy to get defensive stat's if the other team knows they are going to win.
No less then Larry bird said cooper was the best defender in the nba.
