To me, this is one of top 10 vocal performances of the last 50 years. In terms of how it moves me to tears every time I listen to it, it is my person number 1. Aretha Franklin's performance is simply astonishing. She did this without rehearsing with this orchestra and conductor, and on 20 minutes notice. She brought her own style into a piece of classical music and totally crushed it. Demolished it. Those people are lucky the roof didn't cave in after that ending. I think the video might have been edited. I heard that she received a 10 minute standing ovation. And I am sure the brought a lot of people to tears. I can't imagine anybody, even opera buffs, criticizing her performance. She interpreted it as her own and her own emotions came through - her artistry seems boundless. Rest in Peace Queen of Soul.
SHE HAD SUNG THIS 2 NIGHTS PRIOR AT ANOTHER BENEFIT!!❤❤✔ THEY DONT CALL HER THE QUEEN FOR NOTHING!! DONT LIMIT ANY SINGER, STOP PIGEON HOLEING ARTIST!!❤✔THE QUEEN DID HER THING!😅PERFECTION!!
Aretha Franklin is arguably the most important female vocalist of the 20th century . Her influence transcends almost every genre and that performance is a good example of why. She is also more than just a pop culture moniker like " queen of soul ", she has had a profound impact on the US socio- political landscape as well and became the "voice" of the civil Rights movement , among other things .
She was filling in at the last minute for her friend Luciano Pavarotti, who was not able to be there to sing the aria at the Grammys that night. I'm so glad you reacted to this!
She literally had 20 mins, maybe, to prepare. Luciano called in sick 10 minutes into the show and they asked if she’d be able to sing (since she did a rendition a day or so before). No rehearsal, a quick listen to some of his rehearsal footage, a few minutes of vocal warmups to test the monitors, and *boom* showtime. An incomparable professional.
Only Aretha!! Wow!! I remember watching this live. Sting said she was asked at At A MOMENTS NOTICE meaning there was absolutely no rehearsal. She literally stepped in for Pavarotti on the spot. Wow!! What an incredible woman! Love you Aretha!!!
People of color have always crossed over everything. I think she added to it more than any other singer has ever brought to that song. Aretha's voice brought something special to the world.
With only 7 minutes to prepare for this Ms. Franklin blew it out of the park! How many singers would have the courage to sing in another language and genre like the queen did?
The story goes, she sang it at a party the night before and when Pavarotti fell ill and backed out of the Grammy’s the next night they called on her. I can’t remember if she even had a chance to practice with the orchestra. Sting who announced her, didn’t even leave the stage. He just stood at the podium watching. It was pretty cool.
In addition to that, she was asked at the last minute to fill in and she asked to hear his rehearsal tape. She listened to it and went out and did that.
She did not have a rehearsal with the orchestra. She had a mic and monitor check of about 30 seconds, during the commercial. The whole first part of the song, she's just getting a feel for how the orchestra even sounds.
Everything is right except she performed the song two nights previous at a musical event. I forget the name of the event. Edit: She didn't have time to practice with the orchestra. She had time to listen to his practice recordings and from there she determined that she could perform it in the same key as the orchestra was playing.
so Luciano got sick that night and said his doctors advised him he could not go on stage and sing. The grammys were live. the orchestra and choir were already tuned to luciano's key. during the commercial break one of the producers ran to Aretha's dressing room because he knew she sang the song at the music cares benefit a day or so before the show. there were only seven minutes to go and she said yes with no hesitation. with no time to prepare she had to sing it in his key. did she sing it perfectly, no but she made it her own and its one of the greatest moments in grammy history.
She filled in last minute for her close friend Luciano Pavarotti, who was taken ill. It gives me goosebumps every time I hear it, it’s one of her best performances in my opinion and she proved that she can sing anything. RIP Aretha Franklin the queen of not just Soul but music as a whole. ❤️xx
Thanks for your reactiion. I generally listen to only Christian/Worship music. My children and I were watching the Grammy's that year. Every so often, I will listen to this performanc again. Aretha brought something to Nessun Dorma that could never be replicated, her distinctive voice, style, and interpretation of song. It is stunning that she stepped in at the very last moment while the program was on. She and Pavarotti were friends and he knew she could sing it. Because the Grammy's was in progress, she was unable to rehearse the song with the orchestra Instead, she listened to a tape cassett recording of the orchestra's rehearsal the day before as her only preparation. There is a richness, passion, and fluidity of her vocalizations across vocal registers that is stunning,, powerful, and dynamic. After that performance, I had hoped that Aretha would do an album of Operatic works that she loved and invited Pavarotti as a guest on Nessun Dorma. Alas, it didn't take place. I would have loved it. It would have been a uniquely unmatched moment where Opera met soul. Thanks again. This really is a reflection of the masterful god-given gift that Aretha was blessed to have.
I love your comment. My mother and I were cheering in the living room when this was current. Our family was more into Mahalia Jackson, but Aretha did something very very special. Pity she didn’t work with Pavarotti. I heard he also wanted to work with Whitney They are all gone now 🙏🏾
The Mezzo-soprano Grace Bumbry instructs all of her students to listen to Aretha Franklin so that they can try and realize and convey true emotion with their performances. True to form, Aretha let loose on this performance and as the saying goes; "The rest is history"!
Dude…here’s the kicker that proves she is one of the all time great virtuosos. She only had an hour to prepare. Pavorati was supposed to perform it for the 1998 Emmy Awards but canceled an hour before the performance due to illness. Aretha was asked if she could do it. She listened to a track of Pavorati singing it, said “Yea I can do that” and an hour later she did…and boy did she.
Loved when she did this HER WAY. Now check her out honoring her friend Carol King at The Kennedy Center Honors with a jaw dropping performance of Natural Woman!
The main thing I love about this performance, is even though she's known for her big voice and runs, but she kept it simple, and cut back on her runs! She only used her runs when they truly fit!
I had the same reaction you did. So special it's beyond imagination. It's hard to wrap your head around. Makes me proud to be a human. Not sure if you have access to American TV, National Geographic just last week put out an 8 part mini series called Genius: Aretha Franklin. That emotion of humility you felt during this video, the whole series will make you fell that.
The last 30 seconds are just mind-blowing. There are many critics who blasted her for trying to sing OPERA, but I think they're missing the entire point of why this is great. She didn't go out there and try to be a Metropolitan Opera singer. She went out there to sing an aria in her soulful style. And she made it a musical event like no other. The fact that she had no time to rehearse and was stepping in for Pavorotti makes it even more amazing. It seems like they need to make a movie or documentary about this whole thing.
When Pavarotti who was unwell at the time was unable to perform so they asked Aretha to stand in for him with only 20 minutes notice and he had heard her rendition earlier that week
Thank you thank you so much for the fast upload! Okay.... I have one more request and it’s aretha’s last televised performance I believe in 2015 at the Kennedy center honors singing a natural woman for Carole King
Made me cry. Heard it for the first time at the end of The Upside with Kevin Hart and Brian Cranston. I can count on one hand the number of times that's happened
I enjoyed your expressions while listening to Aretha sing 'Nessun Dorma'. Emotions and facial expressions can sometimes be more impactful than words; yours told it all. I felt you were very honest in your review. As a result, I'm a subscriber to your channel. Vincero! Vincero! Vincero!
One of my favorite performances of all time ! Such a Queen she made that masterpiece even more beautiful when I didn’t think it was possible ! May she Rest In Peace
Better than “quite well”, I usually need Kleenex after!!! Your facial expressions said it and I’m glad you were able to truly hear her and educated. 👍🏽👏🏽👏🏽 It’s also used in the movie, The Upside with Bryan Cranston & Kevin Hart.
There was a moment back in time when opera was not "opera", but just music, the sound of life. Not a deadly-serious score-sheet made for the high-life exclusively. It did touch everyone, all of the everyday's joy and care, all emotions and reactions - like the kind of the audience that visited the first performances of Shakespeare's plays. And Areta simply did recreate this spirit of vividness for her audience today.
Pavarotti was supposed to have sung that night. He was ill and at the last minute backed out. They asked Aretha so sing at the last minute. She did a beautiful job!
I have a gig (pre covid at least) singing the local Italian Festival to raise money and awareness of the opera company, strolling around and singing arias on request. So many people that I talked to and sang for learned about opera through Ms. Franklin's performance of this aria and they started going to see the opera. No...the way she sang it wasn't operatic....but who cares? She made it her own.
I developed an appreciation for opera after this performance. I never knew the orchestrations were so beautiful. And I learned to appreciate the skill in singing.
I love this. It haunts me now. Given the fact she only got asked to do that at last minute with just hearing his rehearsal tape. It stands as one of the best impromptu performances imo.
Pavarotti was suppose to sing this but got sick at the last minute. She had been singing this song regularly in concerts, at this point, and that's why they asked her to sing it on the spur of the moment. She practiced for about ten minutes before she went on. At least that's how the story goes. . .
Hi just sub to your channel. Another thing most don't know about that night is she sing the song in Pavarotti key and not her own. He was on one that asked her to perform with only 15min notice.
Aretha was truly a queen. I recommend that you also look at Lara Fabian, the From Laura with Love concert, specifically Adajio. You will never see more passion in a song, and I can guarantee you will be a fan.
She filled in at the last minute for Pavarotti who supposedly cancelled due to nerves. Watch her sing at the Kennedy Center Honors for Carole King!!! I’m a new subscriber and thank you for you good energy. May I suggest something old school but timeless... the Carpenters... Superstar, This Masquerade.
Please react to Aretha Franklin singing "Climb Every Mountain," not "Climbing Higher Mountains," which is another great song of hers. I think you would like it.
Her vocals were not super strong here, react to her Nessun Dorma at the White House dinner 1999.., her 'top' voice was up and she sang it in a higher octave, power off the scale, her final belt is immense.

That was a beautiful tribute/comment and very well articulated!
I totally agree with with you ,it is awesome!!
All okay with you? You copy this text in every react video wtf

In our lifetime we will never see another one like her
Not arguably. She is
I saw this live. I cried like a baby.
She was filling in at the last minute for her friend Luciano Pavarotti, who was not able to be there to sing the aria at the Grammys that night. I'm so glad you reacted to this!
And she did one hell of a job too
It worked, because she's an artist, not just a singer, or performer. She creates art through her vocals, and it's always beautiful!
Little known fact, Aretha had an appreciation for classic music since she was a young lady. She was very well rounded and enjoyed all genres of music.
Sure it wasn't a technically perfect Italian aria, but it stands as one of the most beautiful performances I've ever heard in my entire life.

The face he made when Aretha hit that first low note 😂😂 he wasn’t ready

No practice, hadn’t heard the orchestra, live, one take. 🐐
She had no time to rehearse with orchestra. Apparently she was listening to the cassette in the Limo on the way to the grammys
She sang it in Pavarotti's tenor key. Because that was what Pavarotti and the orchestra had rehearsed.
I've watched that video 20+ times, and it never fails to bring me to tears.
I agree! It goes to show you that a true artist can peform any genre! It was moving!
This was a triumph for her.
Pavarotti was a force of nature. Only fitting they got another force of nature to stand in for him. Legendary performance by a legend.
Well said!

I became so emotional watching it. I loved Pavarotti so much and thought Aretha? Oh yeah Aretha!! Beautiful.
Anybody can sing, but not everybody can "sang". Aretha, can SANG!
Facts
Word.
😂 Facts!!! Sanging is a different type of level
Aretha owned that song. One of the most influential voices ever..She can sing anything

Pavarotti calls in sick after the Grammy show already started. Aretha says “Hold my beer”
She did the damn thing. That is it. That is all.
Does he not know who the QUEEN is?All Hail the Queen of Soul
Chills
Love your channel dude
The Queen!
The fact that this was last minute makes it even more remarkable. Just think how this performance would’ve been executed if she had prepared for it!
I LIKE your reactions! 😍
If u can SANG YOU CAN SING ANYTHING
Nobody: I need a bit of soul in my opera
Aretha: say yes
Everything you just did in this was my same reaction. I cried more though. Thank you for relating.
QUEEN🙏🏼💓
She did attend juliard they knew
Arethat filled in for Pavotti because he was ill and asked Aretha would she do it in place for him and she nailed it

She is the Queen.
Since the song was previously scored they couldn't change the key so she sang the song in the scored key rather than one that would work for her.
Please do a reaction of Pavarotti and James Brown-A Mans World (Live Performance) ....👨🏻👨🏽🎙🎵🎶🎵🎶🔀💞💞💕🤗😂

She filled in for her friend Pavarotti who couldn't make it.
Please react to Aretha Franklin singing "Climb Every Mountain," not "Climbing Higher Mountains," which is another great song of hers. I think you would like it.
It’s been sad that they take down the rachelle Ferrell video
id love to see your reaction to lalah hathaway and snarky puppy something
WASNT THAT EMOTIONAL AND POWERFUL
Her vocals were not super strong here, react to her Nessun Dorma at the White House dinner 1999.., her 'top' voice was up and she sang it in a higher octave, power off the scale, her final belt is immense.
Because this ordinance was tuned for Pavorotti
You may be hearing all of those distractions,.. but we can't hear anything but you...
Aretha studied opera. Please check out Amanda Cole (sang with En Vogue).
