- In 2012, for the first time since 1980, guitarist Pat Metheny recorded with a band that highlighted tenor saxophone. Unity Band, which went on to win Metheny his 20th Grammy Award, featured Chris Potter on sax and bass clarinet, longtime collaborator Antonio Sanchez on drums, and Ben Williams on bass. Metheny added another musician, multi-instrumentalist Giulio Carmassi, and christened the ensemble Pat Metheny Unity Group.
Metheny says of this Group, "The core quartet of Chris, Ben, Antonio, and me played more than 100 concerts over the year that followed the release of our Unity Band record. Over the course of that period, the band became one of those rare combinations of players where the whole is greater than the sum of its parts; it gelled in every way, and that just seemed to beg for expansion and further research."

Pat Metheny is the music of my life.
I've had the great fortune of the traveling around the world and his music is always with me. I hear a song and it takes me right back to that moment: whether a beach in Thailand, trail in Nepal or dune in Morocco.
While I don't identify with the newer music as much as the seminal stuff in the late 80's, the Metheny "sound" still grabs at my soul like no other.
Same sentiments, big dawg, no other artist since 1977 for me, after that stylus dropped on "Phase Dance". Was and still is a done deal..
Absolutely awesome. Can't wait to hear and see it happen.
Metheny's music is a gift. Artists deliver their creations to us and nobody knows where these come from. Musicians fascinate us because they are human, like everybody, but they have access to these treasures. There is a gap between their humanity and the out-of-this-world character of their compositions. Music touches our soul, our heart, our brain. "It's a kind of magic"....
Beautifully said, bbmusic22. Agree totally.
Those first 15 seconds alone are just brilliant...
cannot wait.
I love the Metheny Unity Group!
I think this is my favorite Pat Metheny album!!! 😩😍🥰 Can’t stop listening to Sign of the Season and Kin! 🎧🎼❤️💜💚💛🖤🤍🤎
I adore Pat Metheny.
Just saw his performance in Va Beach last week. Saw him there a few years ago at the inaugural performance of the new Sandler Center there as well. We would run, not walk, to ANY chance to see this group play live.
Been digesting the record for a couple weeks now, and as usual with Pat's work, it keeps getting better with successive listening. This is a fantastic record with wonderful melodic solos by Pat, Chris and especially Ben.
I love all of Pat and the guys work. I cant honestly say this would be any better with Lyle etal, this is just different and that is good. Sad is the life stuck in any rut.
An awesome concert in NYC 3/28, 6 days after my birthday & a present for myself. Looking forward to getting my hands on this cd! ;-)
Sounds terrific. Can't wait for the gigs.
Just bought my tickets! Chicago March 11! can't wait.
Simply Wonderful.... Can NOT wait!
Can't wait for my pre-order to arrive. Sounds wonderful.
Can' hardly wait! Sounds like a pretty fusion of all Pat's stages as a musician, seems like this album will be the key to understand Metheny's whole music life-project! Would like to see 'em in South America.
This sounds so much like PMG. I LIKE this! Can't wait!
This album is still one of my PMUG favs! Need a Kin () reboot or Kin pt 2!!! 😩🔥🔥🔥
Looking forward to this! Thank you, Pat!
The last time I had this feeling was when I heard a pre-release broadcast of The Way Up on XM Radio (the former channel "Beyond Jazz" on Channel 72) in late 2003. Ever since then, I didn't think anything could ever top the musical tour de force of The Way Up. I was wrong. The 2-minutes I heard are the most amazing sounds ever from a Pat Metheny "Group." I'm insanely eager for the full-release and then to see the live tour from the front row in March. Bravo, Pat Metheny. And thank you (again).
Sean, man I have the same feeling....this sends 220v up and down my spine, just like "The Way Up" did (and of course "Secret Story").
I love the care with which every element is balanced -- his virtuosity as an orchestrater is that even in dense passages every note is crucial and well placed. No 7ths in the first few bars of this sample, the first chord root and fifth, the third only a ninth and raised fifth, and delicately brushed in the mix. No cliche chords. I think his "smooth jazz" detractors either haven't heard his more outside work (Derek Bailey, Zero Tolerance for Silence), or fail to recognize the original harmonies and voicings he's developed over the years, or just don't appreciate the expressive range he displays in every form and ensemble he approaches. Can't wait to hear the disc and the concert!
I'm going to his concert in 3 days :) I've grown up with PMs music and I'm sooo excited!!!
Sounding great.Looking forward to hearing the whole thing.
Can't wait for the disc...also for the tour!
I'm in!

Patrick, know where you are coming from.
cool. I'm in.
Pat is so good his level of guitar cant be attained by mortals
I don't understand what he does or even like his tone but he is sic man
Michael Z Martin Yes. They play the same notes: A, A#, B, C, C#, D, D#, E, F, F#, G and G# sometimes. Incredible coincidence!
Great!
Génial, vite en France qu'on entende ça!
This week in Charlotte. Have my ticket!
Looking forward to the Houston show!
Take the points made...saw potter 15 years ago the development is astounding.....pat has a new voice to feed off....the underlying fact is that pat had no definable ego..this allows a fluidity with all he collaborates with and as a result of that all around him elevate.....getz in 1980 said if i played a guitar the melody that pat delivers would be that sound
Stephen, well said. I love PMG and the great music and various intimations of (great) musicians that played with Pat & Lyle through the decades, and this PMUG is, what I am hearing of it with the new line-up, a familiar yet new gift. Really looking towards the entire release, just like "The Way Up", "SON" et.al.
That´ll be the day!
Sounds Fantasmagoracle !!!!
Sounds Great!
woooooaaaah !
great stuff :) best metheny stuff since Orchestrion
Bravisimo!
excited

Pat is God.(End of the Secret Story)
Fantastico!
Nice! Please swing by the Keswick for a concert.... Please!!!!
yes!
Unity Group took "The Way Up" to the next upward level.
A good blend of PMG and the Unity Band.
OMG!!!!!!
simplemente GENIAL
the best
.👏👏 som Incrível ! 👑🎆📀🎶🍷🍷🌈
Woah
I just started the transcription ! Very Challenging !
These samples sound great. The thumbs down must not be Potter fans is all I can figure, or have misplaced feelings about Lyle's entirely self-styled absence from the public eye.
Increible!!
¿por que no extienden su periplo hacia sudamérica?
acá en Chile lo esperamos llenando estadios y teatros
Love this. I have been a Metheny fan for years. I don't always enjoy everything he does - Orchestrion was 'interesting' but left me cold... this sounds like it could be a favourite though. Btw... how do these players get that good?!
In my opinion, it is no wonder that this band called Pat Metheny Unity Group since this album has the sound of PMG's recordings and Metheny's latest album with the Unity Band. So, I guess it's kind of mixture between the past and the future of Metheny's music.
Great sound!but the Lyle's touch??
Can't wait for this album to drop. Sounds almost as good as the PMG! I'm hoping it will be even better!
MARAVILLOSOS MUSICOS....pero donde esta Lyle Mays?
Count me in for 2 also.
Bien ahy pat y orQuesta...
"With this group just about anything will be possible" Yes it could but With Lyle and Steve you´ve done a lot and made a lot.
Im sad that Lyle and Steve are gone. Gonna miss those in the band.
Steve is still centrally involved - he is a producer now. (He was a producer for the later PMG albums). Like you, I miss Lyle's input.
***** Maybe one day Lyle will come back. Perhaps this newest album will wake him out of retirement.
I suppose I shouldn't be too greedy, Pat's not getting any younger and he's somehow still going strong, releasing something just about every year.
With all due respect, and being a loyal pgm fan, this music (and some other contemporary jazz stuff as well) is sounding a bit hyperkinetic to me, and i don't feel any longer emotional connection, since Lyle's days with Pat. But every artist has the right to move "forward" based on his-her own aesthetics and motivations, like it or not.
Sergio Valenzuela Video montages will sound hyperkinetic. Kqu, for example, is certainly not. Giulio has some of Lyle's touch and a ton of his own. I'm sure we'll hear a fair bit of that on the full release and in concert.
I gotta buy this, as well as 'Unity Band' (yes, I gotta catch up). But I have "Tap: John Zorn's Book of Angels, Vol,20" - beautiful & disturbing.
OUCH, comrade Hondje Heir! OUCH!
very , very... high flght ....!!!!!
I guess I've been very uninformed, but is the PMG on 'indefinite hiatus' ? Did Pat & Lyle feel the well's gone dry after the amazing 'The Way Up' ? I mean, I can hear The Unity Band - especially now as a five piece - is sounding quite like the PMG, yet with some new/fresh elements and its own personality as well...Anyone?
Dang...
Portugal, Visita Portugal :)
Lyle is missing :(
Totally adore Pat's music, not to mention Lyle Mays! ( ^ _ ^ )
AND SOUTH AMERICA PORRA !!
in the begining there was a sound...
What a taster........and yes it is a shame that lyle is not there.....but this could slot into the way up so easy.......all at the top of their game and does it show.....like you all cannot wait
PMG with Lyle was expansive and sensitive. PMUG with Pat's main collaborator being Potter on sax, trends toward the former more at the expense of the latter. Sax just doesn't lay back or do nuance that well - it's either playing a doubled head with Pat, on solo, or out. Lyle was everywhere in the PMG sound but never in the way of the emotive intent of the music - his dynamic range and utility was huge and essential to what that band was all about.
Gen Eric Agree, but still think this thing will be great.
Gen Eric
Agree too like eysikal, it'll be a great gig. Lyle was essential to the PMG and what you say strikes a real chord with me, but this is a new project. I even knew about Lyle before I heard of Pat, when Lyle was in the NTSU 1 o'clock lab band writing the charts for their 1975 album. But perhaps Lyle needs a break.
Γεια σου Σεμους,
Τι κανείς. Last night I missed a great show of Pat Metheny. Do you like his playing? Tell dad to call me today, if possible.
Σε αγαπώ πολυ ,
Η γιαγιά σου Αμαλία
Absolute drivel
Autodidactus - I'm not sure you could call this drivel. The guy has 20 grammies and is regularly cited by people at the top of his profession as a virtuoso and innovator. It's fine to disagree, of course. perhaps you don't like it. Sure. But i wonder why you'd bother to comment. Seems like you just want to cause as fuss amongst those with positive views for him. If that is the case then given that life is short...perhaps you'd be better spending your time listening to something you do like.
Jules Hamlin The fact that he has 20 Grammies and "is regularly cited by people at the top of his profession as a virtuoso and innovator" has nothing to do with quality of music on this album.
Erm well...I think it does. I have not said anywhere that because someone has a ton of awards etc that that person is incapable of creating anything but the very best music, not at all! However, I merely felt that the comment was a bit too dismissive of someone who is clearly a high calibre musician (nobody could credibly suggest otherwise). It's fine not to like something but the comment seemed a bit 'shallow.' For example, I don't like everything that Mozart wrote...but I wouldn't call any of it drivel. But... each to their own, it wouldn't be interesting if we all agreed on everything and music is very subjective. (Except I'm right, obviously!) Ha Ha!
Hi Aaron. What's ironic about it? Where's the irony? Also... If you read my comments you'll see that I don't have a problem with people sharing their opinions, negative or otherwise, not at all. I'm just sharing mine too. I did take the op to task for his original comment but that was for reasons outlined above (so you'll forgive me if I don't reiterate). I think this 'debate' is done now - at least for me. All the best!
***** I'd say OP's lack of follow-up or explanation is a pretty good indicator that he wasn't trying to voice an opinion… he was trolling.
OK... this is just an Ad... so should put a "Skip Ad" button on this... not include it in a UA-cam album. The first Pat M. video I voted thumbs down on! I love Pat... but don't include it in this album!!
今回saxが主役みたいでガッカリ。ビックリする展開もあんまりないし。。
Cover art looks like Obummer. Stick to playing guitar, Pat.
