That interplay between Pat and Lyle at 1:22 is why I come here all the time. You can’t do better composing than that bit. Just out of this world. And Lyle, man.. we miss you here.
Can’t believe it was almost 20 yrs ago! It is so great an honor for me to have been a small part of the concert. I still remember its atmosphere and fever in the LG arts center in Seoul.
I'm 74, used to play drums, but when I was much younger I loved and still love Jazz, everyone my age wanted to play Rock and Roll, just didn't stir my heart like good Jazz...
I agree with you. I don’t know but it seems Lyle seemed to keep Metheny from going off the rails. Now with Lyle gone R.I.P. it seems Pat has taken some interesting endeavors
@@susanjohnson5446 Pat on his own projects since the 80’s has always been on interesting endeavors. PMG was it’s own thing and he respected that. Since he had Lyle to compose with. But that’s just my own assessment. Lol
literally... for me -- this is the ultimate modern instrumental music. in every way. improvisational level, composition, performance... this is as good as I can dream up.
I'm just a mere mortal who could never EVER even come close to writing or composing anything close to this magnitude. This is sheer Beauty and Genius wrapped up in one magical evening. RIP Lyle. You and Chick will always be my two favorite Keyboard/Piano Player/Composers. You are both #1's RIP Lyle David Mays (November 27, 1953 - February 10, 2020) RIP Armando Anthony "Chick" Corea (June 12, 1941 - February 9, 2021)
Saw this performed live in concert on this tour. An interesting part of this to that's not shown in this video is how often Pat's guitar tech is constantly carrying different guitars on and off the stage for Pat to play! It was actually a very interesting part of the show that you don't see here.
Wow, this is the tops, cream of the crops, etc. I'm ashamed I haven't had this in my life for longer. I've always said ELP is the best, especially as a live band(early days), but this, I can die now knowing I've seen the best musicianmanshp ever!!!!! So, this, Yes & ELP, are the best of the best. I got the dvd from netflix, I was frozen & zoned watching it. Thank you Pat Metheny and band, you're all superheroes in my book, I'm in awe of you all, you all deserve wonderful lives for your positive contribution to this earth.
& a big thanks to my Mom and my Uncle Jerry for playing me Pat Metheny as a kid, circa 1980's in Tampa, FL, I probably wouldn't know about this greatness, if it weren't for you both, loves yas!
WBMFTSNE, Travels and First Circle are, for me, pinnacles. To have seen PMG Tour First Circle, and appreciate what ELP pulled off on their 73-74 Brain Salad Surgery tour really peaks the live music meter.
Que recuerdos y que placer escuchar a Lyle Mays. Faltó tiempo para ser más valorado como un muy muy buen tecladista y pianista. Sonido personal, limpio y cálido 🎹
For anyone interested: the full show 'The Way Up Live' has just been made available to watch on our streaming service in full HD + 5.1 surround sound 🎶
This is simply the best blu ray concert ever put onto disc these are simply state of the art musicians it does not get any better than this,i just wish pat and lyle would get back together we miss them a lot.
Thanks so much for sharing all the music!!! You're a living legend! Lyle too!! I'm here in Indy, would like to see you! Hope you are well God loves you deeply Shalom 🎸🔊 🐕⛰️🏞️ 🏔️🎊 🎆🎉 ✨🎇 🎶🎉🎈🎹🎵
I just lined up the original album recording .... with this live recording in an audio editing program - the timing and executions are absolutely identical. Of course, some of the improv varies, but essentially, the band is so freaking awesome... that they performed this piece live exactly as they recorded it. Which is stunning. Essentially, a Pat Metheny Group album recording is as "live" as it can get. Especially when you compare it to or consider the amount of post production bullshit that most "artists" have to do to make an album nowadays. (UPDATE: after listening to the combined tracks for another 15 minutes) I mean, my God. This is incredible. It's perfectly in line. Geez oh man. These guys are unbelievable. Oh, another thing: Steve Rodby's drum beat is the frickin whip.
Can't Believe it's already 10 year old. Still sounds as fresh as when it first started polarising the Metheny flock. Still an absolute Jazz-Nirvana for me, with everything else paling into insignificance. Sadly, for now it seems PMG is no more. Maybe they just couldn't continue with the knowledge they'd never surpass this masterpiece. Whatever the case, long live TWU!!!!
Brad Parker Yeah, polarizing, that was me too when the album came out. Played the CD for a while, didn't hate it, but I just didn't get it. Literally forgot about it. Found my copy maybe 7 years ago, and honesty couldn't recall what this CD sounded like till I played it. Holy. Sh&t! I got it. Couldn't stop listening, especially, the Intro and Part One. Just inexplicable!
Strangely enough Michael, I "got" this very early. Not normal for me. I once tossed a prerecorded Yellowjackets cassette (remember those?) into a drawer in disgust. It did nothing for me. A few years later I happened to listen to it again, and it was the best thing I'd ever heard. I promptly became a die-hard YJ fan. It's almost like the subconscious chews on the material despite not being continuously exposed to it. Then again, guess it's probably got more to do with age and maturity. Whatever the case, I'm glad you've got TWU now. My problem now is to find anything else of remotely similar quality...
I hope one day PMG is back together again. It can be so called "Reunion" or "Farewell" tour, doesn't matter. But these guys must share their vision of beauty using the language we love and understand - the language of music. They have mastered the art of composition and arrangement to perfection. If time comes and they perform that "reunion" tour, it will be the happiest day for many, myself included. We need you back, PMG!

Christ almighty! This is perfect synergy at it's very best . . . they're like other worldly alchemists. Thanks for posting!
Pat and Lyle have written the most beautiful music that earth has ever heard.
I love his recordings. But the live performances leave me speachless. Rest in Peace Lyle Mayes.

Superb fusion with such an elaborate orchestration. The subdivisions held by Lyle and percussion let Pat's melody flow dólce.

This is perhaps the most complex piece of music I have ever heard after Frank Zappa’s Black Page. Kudos to the entire band and the composers.
So many intricate sounds! Seeing it being performed is the best way to appreciate it.
Gives me goose bumps every time..Sometimes I tear up too..Don’t know why
My man Antonio Sanchez!
Within the first 40 seconds my mind was expanding. You know the music is so talent-filled it makes you laugh!
Such a good point. And when you can’t wait to go back and revisit to try to get your head wrapped around what the hell is happening

Unlike pop music

The masterpiece. Absolutely!!!
The very first PMG album I bought - and all because I dreamt of the cover one night & was moved to just buy it. I must say it was a great purchase!
I have the DVD with this whole concert. Amazing composition.
Very challenging composition with a memorable recurring theme.
Wow even the damn harmonica player has some serious chops. Always the best with PM. Drumming here is crazy good too.
When I saw this show live, later in the set, they did Are You Going With Me, and Lyle and the harmonica player traded solos. It was really cool.

The blue ray dvd version of this concert is amazing by the way.
I need that in my life immediately. I got to see this played in 2005 in Richmond. Crazy how lucky I was looking back.
wow, this is just AMAZING

This band has added new members--trumpeter Cuong Vu and harmonica player Gregoire Maret. They also added another member, Nando Lauria.
I miss Lyle! Being an musician and a physicist I would love to have met hin! Rest in peace, Lyle!
Nothing will ever be even close to top this album
I stil have to watch this vid but'Im sure I will buy that DVD anyhow. Pat&Group has always been awesome for me

Stunning! Wonderful! So creative, clever - yet highly musical. It would be wonderful if a DVD were available - is there one?

Where can I find this show?
Aaron Agnew there used to be a 20 minute segment but all that is left is the intro. It was my favorite live performance and i have longed to hear the other segments for a while now.
Get the Blu-ray. It's only 15 bucks on Amazon. It has a great DTS HD-MA 5.1 track of the show.
Ok this really destroyed me. No one had music in front of them. Wow.
no sheet music!
This is music of the future, everything before (and I mean from all composers!) seems 'old hat'. Where do we go from here ?
Without Lyle, it will be very difficult go anywhere...
Is this available on DVD?
Yes
+Great Prog Tracks netflix for sure
I dont get it
is the classical guitar in standard tuning?
I was here :D
