The mini van concept was started at Ford. It was Henry Ford II who killed it because he said it would not sell. Iacocca proved he was wrong when he started the production at Chrysler, and demand was so high that Ford and GM were scrambling to get a mini van into production. When the mini van was rolled out at Chrysler, many auto executives said at the time there was pent up demand for a new product that was so strong, and it was not seen in any new product release since the Ford Mustang. Iacocca was responsible for bringing both vehicles to the consumer.
@@ekop1778 Well don't kid yourslef - Lee closed factories and laid off thousands of UAW workers in the process of making Chrysler profitable again. But it's what had to be done.
Let's not forget CNN, that iacocca was was very against seat belts as they were being develop to put into a passenger cars. He argued it would increase costs to the manufacturers. Luckily for all of us he didn't win that battle.
He's exactly the reason why I have a love affair with Chrysler❤ Best man that ever walked the earth Thank you Lee iacocca for the Intrepid caravan and my imperial
The reason AMC sold to Chrysler was that Renault owned of 50% of AMC stock and also political troubles in France led Renault to sell AMC on the chopping block as AMC was Losing Renault A LOT OF MOENY.
The K-car was no Cadillac but it was what Chrysler needed at the time, and it was what America wanted at the time. Fuel efficient and cheap. As a car enthusiast I have more respect for a car that doesn't pretend to be anything than what it is than lets say a 1981 Corvette, with all it's smog control and efficiency modifications, could only muster about 10 seconds 0-60. At the height of the Malaise era, the K-Car was king.
The K car was cheap to fix and were actually decent after 1984 when they went to EFI. I owned several variants of the K car and they were all good cars.
The design of the K car was nearly complete by the time Iacocca arrived at Chrysler. His main focus initially was to rescue an ailing company that was suffering from the effects of very poor management, and many poor quality products from about 1970 onward. And yes, before some people start saying that they had a good Mopar product from that era,I am very well aware that not every car they made in that time period was a bad car. However,a very large percentage of Chrysler products from that era did suffer from poor quality. What Iacocca managed to get from the federal government was not a bailout, but rather a series of loan guarantees, all of which were paid back ahead of schedule, and with interest . If I'm not mistaken,Lee also agreed to forego any sort of perks or luxuries ( such as a corporate jet) until the loans were paid off. Without his leadership, and the management teams that he assembled,Chrysler would almost certainly have gone under. I believe that his legacy is one of the great success stories not only of the auto industry, but of American industry in general. I believe that he deserves our respect.
On reflection. I was indeed somewhat harsh. Never owned a K car but various reports indicated poor quality. Emigrating from the UK in 1975 my first American car was a new Chrysler Cordoba, embracing many fond memories.
The taxpayers didn't bail out Chrysler. The banks did. The government only backed the loans if Chrysler defaulted. Chrysler didn't and paid back the loan money
Lee, you're be missed. Your accomplishments are many but your friendship is priceless

Iaccocca had the idea for the minivan while he was at Ford, and he took it with him to Chrysler.
I’m proud of you!

@@joe6096 he probably saved 10 times more workers at Chrysler by closing factories. Sometime you have to make decisions, even it will hurt some people

Yeah he campaigned against seat belts in the 70’s and invented the K-car, a real winner.

Yeah, saved hundreds of jobs by going to Congress and getting Taxpayers to bail out his failed company! Wonderful!
