I'd give real money to hear Christopher Eccleston deliver this speech.

It would be amazzing to have all of them, Ecclestone to Capaldi, do it all in succession, so one can see the differences in their doctors

The way he says _"Sit down!"_ like he's scolding a child is the most perfect War Doctor line read.
One of the greats, and of the best Who's.

No doubt. I think fans often forget that actors don't know every episode by heart (sometimes they don't even watch their own work), and so they make unreasonable requests like this. The dude just hands him a speech he's obviously never heard, with no context or background, on stage in front of a live audience and asks him to read it. And that's what he did - nothing more, nothing less. I personally thought he was awful, but that's okay - in this scenario, it was impossible to be good.

I'm not sure why you felt the need to single me out where this is concerned, and not the person who started this comment chain, but I am already aware that Sir John Hurt died on 1-25-17. The comment, and all those above it in the chain, were posted _before_ he died. UA-cam will list those comments as being posted "1 month ago" for days to weeks because after a point the time shown is a rough estimate. Just a little tidbit for your future reference since I doubt you intend to make people feel insulted.

He was also The Storyteller in the Jim Hendon series of the same name. I think that's why I took to him as the voice of The Dragon. Somewhere in my subconscious, I knew his voice from when I was a really wee kid. I just didny know his name at the time. I'm glad I watched The Storyteller. Since that vague memory drew me in to watching Merlin, and it made me adore The War Doctor.

If only ISIS and the Nazis had heard this - but they probably wouldn't have listened.
If only people in the future will listen - but they probably won't.
Every war is the same. Men and women join the military, most hoping to make their country safer, only for a politician somewhere to start a war, and drag them into it.
People change, and do the unspeakable. Children cry out in fear. The innocent and the guilty suffer alike. All because someone, somewhere, couldn't compromise.
And these days, the wars seem without end. How much longer will the bloodshed in the Middle East last? A decade? A century? More? All because some people want the world to fit their ideal. Because they can't see the beauty in front of them.

America needs to hear it too - because if you answer war with war; you only continue it. You refine it. You extend it.
      And then it never ends.

    • @2Scribble
      @2Scribble 7 років тому +6

See, here's the thing, ISIS and the terrorists of this modern age aren't going to war to conquer or enslave - they believe their families are in danger. Their country. Their way of life. They believe that America and the UN and the whole of Europe is willing to invade their country(s) to take their resources - because countries have been doing that since before Operation Desert Storm and, in fact, as far back as the Roman Empire.
Then there's areas like Guantanamo and the Muslim ban and the behavior of most of the western world towards their people... simply put - we don't exactly HAVE a good reputation with these people. Every time we kill more of them - or hunt down more of them - we only reaffirm their stance that we are villains. Even worse, our continued occupation of areas like Syria, Iran and Iraq only justifies what they do... and drive others to support them.
Does that excuse them blowing up school buses and restaurants? Hardly. But peace is a two way street - you can't scream at others for not seeking peace when you don't seek it yourself.

The difference in tone and delivery is fascinating to watch here. Hurt gives the monologue this solemn, haunted character to the words, delivering it more like a regretful cautionary warning one might deliver on a deathbed.
Capaldi on the other hand had a much more explosive take on it, delivering it with an almost parental fury, displaying anger and disappointment, but also hints of himself being upset at the discussion. It's like he's scalding his child for nearly killing someone in a car wreck, but being glad they're ok and safe. Both actors absolutely smash this scene, and both are equally as valid as the last.

I believe that being The Doctor (not figuratively like an actor portraying the character, but literally) could be compared to what it's like to have systs or tumors removed from your body: Excruciatingly painful and something which absolutely MUST happen, but ends with such relief it can only be described as cathartic.
In another seemingly incongruous way (that whether you believe me or not, came to me mere moments ago after I began typing this comment) which somehow, impossibly, even if only for myself, makes perfect sense...
    Hurt that heals.

It's not just practice with the text that made Capaldi's version so much better. He had directions too. The gap between the two versions is the limitation of the actor alone, without a good director to help him grasp what the scene was meant to convey. As brilliant the actors are, never forget that Doctor Who is a whole team.

I don't care if he didn't have time to rehearse it, it still left me even more heartbroken over him.

I always wanted to meet this man. I first watched him in Harry Potter then Merlin and was so excited when it was announced he'd be in Doctor Who. Sad loss to The Who world but he'll live on though his performances that I'm sure generations to come will enjoy

I really want to see that again after he reads it through more and has more time to decide on how he wants to emphasize it

This is absolutely amazing. I just wish he had time to rehearse this so he could get the "eyes" part with a little more passion. From what I've seen I still think Capaldi's is the best version then War Doctor... then 9th, last but not least the version I've seen of 10th. I'd like to see Jodie pull this off too...
still thank you Sir John Hurt, this was phenomenal.

Seeing a lot of comments about how Hurt needed more time to rehearse this...personally, I think he nailed it right from the off. Then again, I've always preferred it when the Doctor allows their rage to fester and simmer just below the surface, rather than explode in a violent (and oftentimes OTT) outburst. Completely owned it, which was only to be expected from one of the absolute best.

It's nice to add John Hurt to the list of actors who've read speeches from other Doctors.
By the way, McCoy's Pandorica Speech was way better than Matt Smith's version.
