Every time news reaches us about an elderly elephant in need, we act promptly, disregarding their trauma and frailty. Despite the challenges in rescuing aged elephants, we carefully navigate each step, ensuring a safe journey to freedom.
The process is demanding, requiring meticulous care in every aspect, from relocation to addressing risks. Our commitment intensifies upon reaching their new home, involving rigorous efforts in nutrition-rich cooking and persistent care for age-related symptoms.
SomBoon, much like many rescued elephants, was captured over 80 years ago, torn from the wild and family, trained to serve humanity for decades. As she weakens, we believe she deserves the freedom she was denied. With little time left, we aim to provide her with the love, happiness, and freedom she missed for eight decades.
In her twilight years, we strive to compensate for the experiences SomBoon lost, ensuring she receives the care and services she deserves today.

You ever see an 84 year old elephant before?
World record is 86, in captivity. This elephant isn't going to look like what you expect due to age. If she was heavier it is possible she wouldn't be able to stand up.
Had she been a wild animal shed likely have been dead 40 years ago. The only reason she's still alive is humans kept her alive.

Yes, elephants have ribs ... that's prolly dermis of this pachyderm as she ages. Granny looks good, unsure weight (edit ES did indicate that 2534 kg) though to me still looks svelte, strong, & healthy.

Humans kept her Suffering and in constant Stress, with lack of Nutrition. That's what made her thinner than she should be at her age. Had she been properly cared for, she would have had more body strength.

As a kid I had friends who rode horses. I once went with them, to see if I could join. I found the contrast between a picture we had of wild running horses and these animals walking circles in a sandbox so depressing, that I never returned. It blows my mind when people not see this.
At this point, I don't believe the tourists are clueless anymore. They have eyes, they see the chains, the sharp sticks, the bruises, the ropes, the skinny bodies, they see.

I cried too. How cruel the previous owners were. There has to be laws made to punish owners of Ellis who treat them like this. I live in NY and feel their pain

Sme tourists know no better. I had a friend that wanted to go for an elephant ride, it was on her 'bucket list'. I sent her some links for info and she nearly puked. Needless to say, she now discourages anyone from wanting an elephant ride.

They are all old, weak, sick and disabled, but they have to carry iron chairs weighing dozens of kilograms to be ridden by tourists. The Internet is so developed, I don't understand why there are still countless people who don't know the suffering of these animals?

@@missclaire4820 I didn't find out until recently that riding elephants can actually hurt them -- it seemed impossible that such a large animal could be harmed by the weight of a mere human.
I don't have the money for tourism anyway, but if I did you can be sure that I wouldn't go on any elephant-riding events.

I have been praying and hoping that law in Thailand would change that. It is so unfair that they are using the elephants as a profits, owners need to find a job to provide food for elephants, if he cannot afford it then they need to be free in the forest where they belong.

One of the best ways to help protect animals is to give the humans who exploit them genuinely good work opportunities. For so many suffering animals, they are suffering along side humans with no better options. I've been vegan for over 12 years, promoting animal rights without demanding social protections for humans at the same time tries to solve half the problem and never makes lasting, meaningful change!

This really made me tear up. Oh, the things we humans do to Nature and Nature's creatures in order to "entertain" ourselves. We ravage Nature (yes, again with capital"N") and abuse and enslave animals all because we feel we have "the right" to do so.🙄 Thankfully, this gentle giant was at long last saved, but... how many more like her are still out there? My gratitude and respect for anyone and everyone involved in her rescue.🙏❤️

Dearest Somboon ❤ It breaks my heart that this very elderly lady has cruelly been denied her birthright all her life. 87 years! 😢 Nothing will ever make this right but, as she approaches her transition to "home", I am appreciative that she will leave surrounded by love and kindness. I know and understand that many people dont hold to my beliefs but I am truly convinced that Elephants, like humans, return to spirit when their time here is over. In Somboon's case she will roam freely and happily in the Beauty of Spirit. Rest Dear Lady before your final journey. 🧡🐘🧡🙏 Shame on those who stole her freedom. Tears seeing in her old age and still have to work long hours as a riding elephant. Elephant didn't design to carry people on their back. It could cause medical problem to their spine. How can anyone feel it is ok to ride a Elephant in that poor condition. You can see all her bones and yet tourists seem to feel that is just fine. I am happy that she get to spend the time of her remaining life where she is not abused or used, but where she can just be an Elephant.
