Perhaps I got a defective one. . Bought the Aputure version as it was only $20 more at $89 and the skirt was included. The Aputure lantern works perfectly, easy to set up and take down and produces great light.

The lanterns have reflectors built into them (the black parts) but the Godox SL60 comes with a reflector that has a punch-out for an umbrella, which allows you to adjust the size of the lit diffuser material. I use a Godox AD200 with the bare bulb and the dome diffuser (which has a reflector on the back) and I have a few shoot-thru umbrellas of various shapes and sizes (I even have a CTO umbrella, not that I’ve ever needed it). I just don’t see the need for lanterns... That said, I do love an international pastry based explanation...
The difference I've noticed is that with an umbrella you only get 180 vs the (almost) 360 you can get from a lantern. It's a way of even lighting all around. Where an umbrella only hits out soft light in one direction, the backend of it usually has some harder bounce light. Lanterns are really a use case scenario thing. Haha, glad you love the international pastry part :D
I'd say probably since the lantern brightens up any space really well and the light bounces all around. However some spaces may need a bit of fill depending on size OR if you want a really bright image overall (such as a beauty shot).
@@FellowFilmmaker the reason I’m asking is because Godox sells a kit pair of SL60Ws that comes with two lanterns and stands but I’m on the fence about getting that for shooting interviews/testimonials. Depends on the specific type of interviews, but most interviews I ever do I use a parabolic dome. So I'd say get a dome instead and source the other lights as you were planning. My go to interview setup is a Godox UL150 as the keylight, Godox ML60 or SL60w for the rim/hair light, and if I were to ever use fill I'd just use a 5 in 1 reflector since I never really do fill (style preference). @Fellow Filmmaker when you have one of those set up on your SL-60. What are your lens and camera settings? I feel like knowing the aperture and ISO that this was shot at would help a lot with getting a good idea of how much or little this diffuses the brightness of the light.

Thank you for your review !! It seems to be the only one showcasing these size lanterns. Did you find the Godox 85 cumbersome? I wonder would the 65 cm be a better option with equivalent spread. What do you think?
I'd say I'd like the 65cm more, at least for the size of the spaces I'm typically shooting in. The 85 was great but felt a tad big still. A smaller one would probably have worked better for me, so yes I do think it'd be good. :D
Thank you for replying! One more question if you don’t mind, if you tilt the lantern down vertically on a subject similarly to what is done with a dome and add the skirt around it, would the lighting properties be similar?
Thank you for this awesome video. I wondering about use the lantern softbox for green screen. (especially with the panels to block the light spill on my back.) Can it be a solution for one light spreading all over the green screen?
If you have the space for it, then I do think it can be. You'd need enough space between the subject, light, and backdrop in order for it to work properly. I've not done it, but that's what I think would be how it works :)

I have a godox 60 watt light. Can't figure out what to get godox cs-65d or a cs-85d lantern softbox? Would I benefit more in getting the bigger lantern?
I'm loving these! After watching another of your videos I purchased a Godox 150. Debating what type of diffusion to get. Would you recommend the lantern style or a more traditional soft box style as my initial purchase for the light? I assume the more traditional soft box but thought I'd ask. Thanks!
@@FellowFilmmaker what about for interviews with two people? Do you think you can make it work with just a lantern instead of having two regular softboxes?
Nice review but it’s missing some info about how these compare as far as spreading the light inside the lantern (fabric thickness, quality, if there are hot spots, etc). Also, what are the vertical tubes you are using? Thanks!
I'll see if I can include that next time :D And those are floor lamps I got off Amazon :D I think I have link in my kit somewhere to them: kit.co/fellowfilmmaker
Hi Fellow Filmmaker, what are your thoughts about the smaller Lantern Softbox like the 50cms and 65cms, have you used them? How does the size affect the quality of light - eg. when you compared the 85cms and 120cm sizes? Would you be able to produce the same effect using an umbrella? Thank you.
I think the smaller ones are probably a better and more useful size to have. :D I've not used them myself, but I know from using the larger ones it's bound to be better! And you wouldn't get the exact effect with an umbrella, but probably at least a little similar. I've not tried it.
I really appreciate this. I have been considering getting a lantern. But I was wondering, how do these compare to just using a large shoot through umbrella? Is it very different?
I feel it is different. There's better light diffusion and spread over an area. Of course the umbrella tends to be a bit directional while the lantern is meant to spill everywhere in a 360 degree way.
Hey, how much diffusion are we getting from each of these lanterns? And if you've got a light that's not as bright as an FV150, would it matter to get a smaller sized lantern vs a 33 one? Thank you!
@@FellowFilmmaker Any difference between the 85 and 120 with the same SL60 in terms of brightness, softness or reach of light? Any benefits with the bigger 120 that you noticed? Thanks again!
The bigger 120cm one with a sl60 is really not a good fit. Too big for the light output size. I'd recommend a 150 watt light for that size of a lantern. The sl60 wasn't bright enough for it. The benefits of the larger lantern would be on much bigger sets where you need the light source to be bigger to gain a softer light. Or for when you have reflective surfaces and want a bigger 'catch' light.
I like the details of the rods being fixed on the inside of Nanlite 120. Do you know if it's the same on 80? Or if this is exclusive to the bigger one? Can't seem to find the answer.
Hey what c-stands are you using? Can’t find them in the description ehh.. looking to buy one right now and can’t decide between godox ones and some others
@@FellowFilmmaker Oh great. Thank you. And please could you tell me how to put clickable links into UA-cam comments. I have never been able to figure that out. 😬🤓 And in reply to your question on another thread under another video where I asked about doing something on outdoor lighting and you said how much $, I would say under a grand or so. Like I just bought the Godox UL 150 for indoors, and as I mentioned there, I have a Litra Pro and a bunch of reflectors but something a little more powerful than the Litra to fill in for video interviews or person presenting in the forest or wherever, but I don’t want to have to get in with the light as close as I have to with the Litra and still preserve visually the broader context. Thanks, Heather. Hope you’re having a meaningful Saturday.
@@FellowFilmmaker I thought in the video the Godox lantern was on a C-stand. Oh the page under lighting, I just see some regular Neewer stands and then a Kupo C-stand.
Ah yes, in that video I forgot I did have it on a c-stand. Which fell over. I'd rather it was on a heavy duty Neewer, it would have been less likely to fall over. :D
I was using a Kupo c-stand, and yes I recommend it. It falling over was me working with it improperly. :/ I also use Neewer heavy duty stand as well, those are good. Got links for the specific ones I use on my kit: kit.co/fellowfilmmaker
Its helpful really if you feel you need to spin the lantern while its attached. Maybe you need to adjust something on the inside and the flap is not near you, so you could spin it. On this type of thing it's not that important.
Hey Heather i just ordered godox lantern, your review helped a lot.. but have you tried aputure lantern? Will there be any light quality difference in them?
I haven't tried the lantern myself so Im not really. But with the various lanterns I've used I haven't seen a quality difference in the light. Obviously there is some material quality differences from brand to brand and price point to price point.
I just got the Godox Sl60w and I am planning to get the lantern 85d softbox. I was wondering which light stand should I get. Which is the one you are using in this video? I mostly want to mount the light overhead and use it for interview videos and product shoots.
I use a heavy duty stand from neewer. You can get a boom arm with grip head to do an overhead rig if that's what you want. Links are in my kit: kit.co/fellowfilmmaker
Hi Heather, quick question. I am using a 26” lantern connected to a Godox VL150 as a fill light and finding that I need to run that light at about 90%. My question is if I switch to a larger 33” lantern, would I be able to run the light at a lower output? The concern being longevity of the light...any comments / suggestions would be welcome. Signed, “a guy that had to pivot to WFH and learn all about lighting on UA-cam”.
Hmm interesting questions. I'm not really sure how to weigh in. But dang, having a fill at 90% is very bright. Do you have it far away from the subject or is it to fill a whole space? And I believe that with a larger source, of significant size, you may have to have more power. I could be wrong, but I believe that is how light works in that situation.
@@FellowFilmmaker Thanks for weighing in. Answers: Set-up is a virtual classroom (in a small space) with a whiteboard which is lit as well...hence the need for a brighter fill (which is also mounted at ground level (cause the ceilings are too low and the wall is too close). What I am taking away is I might need a brighter light. Which is fine cause figured I would eventually need another one. So, would you suggest the Godox VL300 to go with a couple of VL150s? All of your feedback and suggestions and super helpful videos are always appreciated.
Hmmm, I'd say the VL300 is a good idea. I've used it for projects I needed alot of light and it was great. If you don't think that's enough there are other very bright lights out there. :D
Hi Heather, I just got this godox lantern and I’m having issues mounting it to my sl60. The Bowen’s mount keeps spinning. I don’t see a way of tightening it. Did you have this issue?
Did it come with a screw to tighten down the speed mount? If not, the easiest way is not to mount the lantern on the light while its on a stand, but to instead place the lantern on the ground and mount the light onto it there, you'll get less spin.
@@FellowFilmmaker yeah I found the screw but no nut to tighten it, so I had to go to Home Depot and get one. Problem solved. Thank you for the other suggestion.
Very useful video....new visitor to your channel....appreciate the content 👍🏻 Can I use the Godox CS-85D with the Godox SL60W ?? Also what would be the difference between CS-65D and CS-85D for this light ?? I want to light up my subject in an already mildly lit medium sized room...would this serve my purpose ?
Yes those do pair together, I've done it before and it works great. :D The benefit of the 65cm is it's not as big, still gets the same job done. So if you need to save on space I'd recommend it.
@@FellowFilmmaker I believe it's Adorama's own brand based on Godox modifiers.. many of them are good quality while being affordable. Kind of Like Flashpoint is really Godox.
@@FellowFilmmaker I own 2 Glow Modifiers.. one is a 25" collapsible beauty dish which is quick and portable for when I'm shooting outside. The other is an adjustable deep parabolic that gives me some control over the beam of light.. that one was a lil more expensive, but not bad compared to competition prices. And Their 33" Lantern Is about $80 which is certainly affordable and is easy to set up like the few you displayed.
Good review, thanks. Of course, that wasn't a real C-stand, those are heavy enough not to be tipped over as easily. Also, ALWAYS use at least one sandbag to secure your stands
It was a real c-stand, haha, just didn't bag it was all. The dome is very, very large and can tip even a c-stand. Technically c-stands are not exempt from falling over or being unstable. I too thought they were unstoppable machines. Here's a video that helps explain what I mean: ua-cam.com/video/k2kdxPmcqyU/v-deo.html
C stands should never be used to boom a heavy weight like this, regardless of how many sandbags you put on the base. It needs a proper light stand with a larger footprint and legs of equal length.
Heather, When using one of these lantern modifiers to illuminate a small to medium size room, for example a small ballet studio, what power of light would you use to achieve that effect?
@@FellowFilmmaker Thank you Heather that’s really helpful, and the same conclusion I have come to given my research so it’s good to know I am understanding the physics of light correctly. OK major investment coming up! I have a job, my first in that kind of environment and have no lighting. It’s an opportunity I cannot turn down, and I bought some GVM panels the 800d’s as a relatively inexpensive option but realised they at not really suitable, certainly for anything larger than a UA-cam studio set up, so returning them . It’s difficult of course to anticipate every need so I imagine if I get a decent cob light or maybe two? They will be provide greater flexibility in terms of reach and modification,. Really like your videos by the way, just straight to the point, based on your own experiences and very informative, well done !
I'd say panels have their place, but COB is helpful for shaping and controlling. I'd recommend something like Godox VL150 or UL150 for a good key for a variety of work and then a Godox ML60, ML60bi, or SL60w as a good rim light or anything light (fills in the gaps of your needs basically). If you get a modifier or three with those lights you'll be in good shape to do a variety of work. And I'm glad you enjoy the channel! :D I try to make them as helpful as possible
@@FellowFilmmaker I think your intention is very clear, it’s not about you or your ego unlike some channels I could mention, although there are a fair range of what I would call ‘go to’ channels and yours is definitely among those that I regard as ‘go to’. What you do, and very capably in my view, is to put yourself in the position of the viewer, student or consumer not to mention those of us just confused by the breadth of choice and quality , let alone cognisance of the right tool for the job and you also simplify that process of drilling down to the things that really matter when making choices . You don’t try and ‘sell’ one product over the other but the pros and cons of each that you highlight are very helpful . I’ve ordered two UL150s , I agree about the panels, but they won’t cut it on this job. I was thinking along the same lines about eventually supplementing them with the 60. I have a godox 60 watt light. Can't figure out what to get godox cs-65d or a cs-85d lantern softbox? Would I benefit more in getting the bigger lantern?
The bigger lantern would be a bit softer on the skin if you're close to it
I'm loving these! After watching another of your videos I purchased a Godox 150. Debating what type of diffusion to get. Would you recommend the lantern style or a more traditional soft box style as my initial purchase for the light? I assume the more traditional soft box but thought I'd ask. Thanks!
Traditional might be best ☺️ happy to hear you enjoy the content
@@FellowFilmmaker what about for interviews with two people? Do you think you can make it work with just a lantern instead of having two regular softboxes?
Nice review but it’s missing some info about how these compare as far as spreading the light inside the lantern (fabric thickness, quality, if there are hot spots, etc). Also, what are the vertical tubes you are using? Thanks!
I'll see if I can include that next time :D
And those are floor lamps I got off Amazon :D
I think I have link in my kit somewhere to them: kit.co/fellowfilmmaker
@@FellowFilmmaker Thank you!
@@FellowFilmmaker That makes sense. Thank you for answering. Especially on a not new video. I really appreciate your channel
Happy to help out others :)
2:01 Can you please tell us name of that tubelight looking light in front of the plant ?
Its a shoponova floor lamp :D
@@FellowFilmmaker Thanks 😊
More like a bagel than a donut to me 😂
haha, for sure
Hey, how much diffusion are we getting from each of these lanterns?
And if you've got a light that's not as bright as an FV150, would it matter to get a smaller sized lantern vs a 33 one?
Thank you!
A smaller sized light makes no big difference. I've used an SL60w light with the lanterns and it worked great! :D
@@FellowFilmmaker Thank you for responding, I love your reviews and videos!
Very happy to hear that!
I like the details of the rods being fixed on the inside of Nanlite 120. Do you know if it's the same on 80? Or if this is exclusive to the bigger one? Can't seem to find the answer.
Hmm, I don't own the 80 so I can't really say. I would hope they were. Might be a question to reach out to them about.
I’ll be getting a munchkin and a donut 😂
:D
Hey what c-stands are you using? Can’t find them in the description ehh.. looking to buy one right now and can’t decide between godox ones and some others
sorry about that! Here it is: amzn.to/3db5DXh
Can you please tell me which stand you were using for the Godox CS-85D lantern? Thank you.
Neewer Heavy Duty Stands, there's a link here if you want the exact ones: kit.co/fellowfilmmaker
@@FellowFilmmaker Oh great. Thank you.
And please could you tell me how to put clickable links into UA-cam comments. I have never been able to figure that out. 😬🤓
And in reply to your question on another thread under another video where I asked about doing something on outdoor lighting and you said how much $, I would say under a grand or so.
@@FellowFilmmaker Thank you. I think I actually have a couple of those, and a strong Savage one as well.
What a good size lantern 26 inch or 32 inch? I using it for my UA-cam videos standing and sitting. Also I sometimes have a guest on my show.
A larger one could be helpful if you have guests, so the 32 in if you can manage it in your space
Hi! Which stand you were using there? Do you recommend it?
I was using a Kupo c-stand, and yes I recommend it. It falling over was me working with it improperly. :/ I also use Neewer heavy duty stand as well, those are good. Got links for the specific ones I use on my kit: kit.co/fellowfilmmaker
What’s the speed ring ? And how important is it?
Its helpful really if you feel you need to spin the lantern while its attached. Maybe you need to adjust something on the inside and the flap is not near you, so you could spin it. On this type of thing it's not that important.
Hey Heather i just ordered godox lantern, your review helped a lot.. but have you tried aputure lantern? Will there be any light quality difference in them?
I haven't tried the lantern myself so Im not really. But with the various lanterns I've used I haven't seen a quality difference in the light. Obviously there is some material quality differences from brand to brand and price point to price point.
@@FellowFilmmaker thanks ❤️🙌
Welcome! Sorry I couldnt be too much more help
@@FellowFilmmaker don't be.. you are already giving us so much by making these videos 🙂
Very kind of you, thanks for understanding :D
The Nanlite also comes in 85cm... Would have been a better comparison
It would have :)
WEIGHT OF THE LIGHT SHOULD ALWAYS BE DIRECTED, TOWARD THE LARGER LEG OF THE C STAND, AND ALSO, ALWAYS SAND BAG EVERYTHING.
Correct. And it was, but C-stands still have a tendency to be able to fall over if the light gets bumped, which is what happened in this case.
Did anyone get green blocks around 1:00?
Yep... guess there was a little issue in export. Whoops!
I love china ball.😀😀😀
I need to get myself one
and the winner is aputure ;-)
Haha, isn't it always? :p
@@FellowFilmmaker Thanks for the quick reply 👍🏻
What about aputure lanterns?
Is there something you'd like to know about them?
@@FellowFilmmaker compare it to the Other lanterns pls in another video
Ah I see :) I'll see what I can do
Ur awesome
Thank you!
Wah! I didn’t know that you have twin sisters! 😲
Haha :D a well kept secret
Correction, they had them . They have now left the country. :(
Ahhh, I see! I've never had dunkin, but I know lots of folks who like it
💯
Thanks for watching!
That Nanlite looks like a tangerine.
Oooh, it kinda does! Looks like a bunch of different foods
I'd get a Godox or Glow version
Not sure I've heard of Glow...
I'd say you'd want something like a Godox UL150 or Aputure 200d, something that you can get the most out of without being too overkill. :D
From what I can see in photographs of the studio Interior there are some white walls so I’ll be able to bounce light off them . Thanks for your prompt and helpful responses and I’ll be following your new videos with great interest .
So happy to hear my 'style' works for you! I know for me I've been where most people are at, frustrated and confused - that's why I decided to do something about it! :D And awesome! I hope those two UL150's work great for you! I love that they are totally silent, really makes a big difference in smaller spaces where noise can be a problem already.
Let me know how things go or I can help another way :D
Some corruption around 00:56
I see that. Been having an issue or two with exports. Going to look into it. Thanks!
@@FellowFilmmaker Not a problem. Brilliant content and love your delivery. Also kinda surprised that you didn't include the Aperture Lanturn. You got me hooked on that one. Though Godox seemed to copy their hook system for setup.
I wanted to do Aputure, but wasn't able to squeeze the already tight budget for it this time around. Maybe in the future! :D
Are you sponsored by the GAP? If not, you should be.
Haha, nope! Just an old jacket I have laying around
