Buddy, I love your channel. You don't just sing BIAB's praises to the skies, you mention real-life workarounds you take. I am proficient with a DAW (Reaper, in my case) and can totally do this. Thanks for your invaluable output
Great job! Another work-around for this without leaving BIAB is to create the song, like you did without the pushes; get it where you want it. Then FREEZE the drum track and add the pushes to the "chord options" and regenerate all of the rest of the tracks.
Another wonderful, inspiring, practical and musical video, thank you! You can also use the Set MicroChords feature, new with the latest release, to have some tracks push and some not (like the drums, for example.) At the current bar where you want to set the push, instead of choosing Chord Settings, choose MicroChord Settings (or use the F6 or “M” shortcut instead of right-clicking), and it will bring up a menu to make push adjustments, and include and exclude the tracks you choose. This may be a great way to preview how it sounds before you bring it into you DAW for further editing. I hope this explanation makes sense and is actually relevant!
Tom. Thanks so much for that info. I always say I don't know everything and can always learn from others :-) I hope that people who view this video will read your comment and try this. It sounds like just the "RIGHT" solution to the drum problem. One thing I will say though is that you'd be surprised at the number of people on my channel on older versions of BIAB. Some as far back as 2015. I haven't spent a lot of time trying to create 2022 based tutorials because they are so limited among the viewing audience. For example I decided not to do "multiriffs" because so few people upgraded. Since tutorials are so time consuming to make I try to hit the widest audience possible. Thanks again and if you're a member of the Band in a Box User Group you may want to post this yourself. I'm positive it will be well received. Cheers.
@@henryclarke5407 You're welcome, Henry. I learned last year from you the new utility tracks that I had not known about that came out with the 2021 version. It's always good to share the knowledge!

Hi. I dropped using the plug-in when they came out with Utility Tracks. When I tried the plug-in with utility tracks it didn't work well so I dropped that method.
Hey Henry this tip was excellent never understood what the push phrase meant though I have been doing it off and on with my direct daw audio recordings. Great tip even for my original workings….thank you
Yes. It's a cool thing to do. What I didn't cover initially is that if you're going to push you can always "freeze" the instruments you don't want to push prior to editing. Makes the process a bit faster.
Thanks a lot for your answer Henry , but I don't know how , for your other videos it's possible but not for this one , anyway I love to watch your videos , Take care , watch you soon , Kish !
Very interesting!! I've noticed that feature but never thought about it. Could you freeze the drum tracks early, before pushing chords, to hear track together the way you want?
Yes you can do that. Honestly I hadn't thought of that before I started doing this technique but I did add it later. It's just not in the video. Good idea and catch.
Yes, I tried it and it did work but for me it was inconsistent. I'm not sure why. I would say yes you could try it and see if you get the right results. Maybe you won't need a 2nd template.
I want to purchase BIAB and wonder if it is worth it to get the most expensive version compared to the cheaper ones. And you still have to buy add-ons? Anyway, thanks for a some really informative videos!
How do I line up the chords with the beat? In 12/8 time the style I picked for that time signature is not lining up with the beat in every measure....ugh. I have checked the chord settings and they have the correct beat, but the sound and the chord display is off. What can a newbie do?
I'm not sure of your question. I would say that it's possible the style is not really compatible with the 12/8 time signature. Did you try other styles?
Another question where do you get the nice patches sounds you have in your videos, I used Sampletank, buy Idont like the way they sound, instruments sound better in my DGX 660 yamaha keyboard.
Hi. All of my BIAB songs are created using exclusively BIAB realtracks. It could either be the BIAB Pak you purchased (Basic, Pro, Ultra, etc...) or the fact that I layer a lot of sounds (for example a lot of times I'll layer an acoustic Piano with an E-Piano and blend them in my DAW).

Hi Henry, I'm currently using BIAB 2015, do you recommend to upgrade to the latest version?, not sure If am I missing anything major to improve my song writing other than more Stlyes and sounds. Thanks
Very difficult in BIAB. You can search for a piano realtrack that plays 8 note rhythms or if you're totally frustrated you can play them yourself through your MIDI keyboard.
@@saddamali666 Oh well. You're right. I am an old Grandpa. hahahaha Anyway I have no idea or opinion on Behringer Bass samplers. The only Behringer piece of gear I own is a mic pre-amp and I don't use it anymore.
Another problem with "push chords" they aren't always the best solution... actually it's impossible to do a fluid syncopation strumming patterns on band in a box without that "push" that it's not more that a full ringed chord...that's not what I want... I want fluid strumming... I think they can do it with indexation on the samples, the way I found to solve this is exporting audio to my DAW and cutting the audio files to achieve syncopation patterns without an stop
Getting proper pushes is the least capable part of BIAB. Your method works, but there are faster ways of achieving the same thing, with even more creative possibilities. Add the pushes you want, then render the tracks muting the drums (or any others.) Then go to Preferences>Arrange and uncheck play-pushes, and everything will play and render without the pushes, even with the green push commands still in the chord window. There is no need to add or remove pushes in the chord window and save several different versions of the song with and without pushes. Band-in-a-Box is limited in the way it handles pushes the way it is done in commercial music. It should have the option to select which instruments should have or not have pushes in the chord settings. It is not always just the drums versus the other instruments when deciding what to push. Sometimes you want the bass or the guitar or something else to push or not. For example, John Lennon was fond of pushing rhythm guitar chords here and there, when no one else did in Beatles tracks and it gives a really good feel that a total push of the bass and keys would ruin. Sometimes pushing everything but the bass and drums is cool, and so forth. If I am really into pushes I put a push just about everywhere and render two takes - one with "play pushes" checked in Preferences>Arrange and one with it unchecked. Then in my DAW I have all the creative possibilities of pushing or not-pushing any instrument at any time. Then again, some pushes in RealTracks are not smooth over the barline, and it is necessary to render it without a push on the barline and manually move it back (in the DAW) by an 8th or 16th to get the right feel. Certain RealTracks cannot really smoothly push over a barline and then resume the straight tempo straight out of the program, but with DAW audio manipulation you can get whatever you want. Some realtracks, especially strummed guitars, annoyingly, add a slow strum or "roll" to a push when you don't want it, so the only way to get a clean attack is to move the un-pushed take forward manually. Also, it is slow to add pushes manually for each chord going into chord settings, which takes many clicks, but you can do it faster by hitting shift>6 (for the caret) before typing in the chord name.
Pushes is a matter of taste. They can be functional but of course not as proficient as real musicians. I use different versions because the pushes DO NOT WORK ON UTILITY TRACKS !! Tus the reason for that. Also you can push individual instruments except the drums which you can FREEZE for a better sound.
