I remember my Pops playing this for days on end and that's why didn't like it until I got to high school because I had forgotten most of the music I grew up on then gradually my mom was still playing that same phenomenal old school funk, r&b and soul now at 45 years of age I basically play Dead Giveaway almost everyday along with a few other favorites from that Epic Shalamar album. It definitely grew on me. You're the one for me is the one I play sometimes twice or three times a day. Greatest Shalamar ballad no doubt.
I remember Howard Hewett saying that they were hanging around a lot of new wave acts at the time of this album. It definitely influenced their sound. The 80s, I'm glad I was there to experience it.
Neon colors, jelly shoes, parachute pants, penny loafers, & the MUSIC !!! I H8 to sound old, but it WAS the BEST DECADE EVER for growing up. We were the FIRST kids to play "video games" & lived thru their progression all the way up to what they've become NOW 😲😲😲
One of the most "commercially successful" songs during the "New Wave/Punk" music era. They transitioned without a hitch ....and by the time it hit the charts they'd split.....as a kid I was "heart-broken."....takes me back! Loved this song!
As with most group splits it was about money and egos. Since Hewett contributed to the band's songwriting and Watley and Daniels did not, he figured he was owed a larger cut of the band's income. Oh well, Jody Watley had the last laugh didn't she 😉
@@jim2lane Good Afternoon Jody did co-write songs during their tenure in the group. She co-wrote Full of Fire which is on their Three For Love album and another song on their Friends album. Howard did co-write their ballad For The Lover In You as well as most of the songs on the group's Heartbreak album. Jody did well on her own and she's still singing and taking fashion walks to the bank.
Love this group!!! Jody was always 3 steps ahead when it comes to fashion and dance. She is truly working it in this video. I can’t keep my eyes off her.
....To this DAY, every time I play this song, I make the crashing sound of the mask breaking, at the end of the video; ....I remember seeing that, & thinking, "...I think this may be the end of the group...." ...and, this was the FIRST SINGLE from the NEW Album! Thanks, Howard, Jody & Jefferey, you three will ALWAYS be The REAL "Shalamar" !! : )
This was to be their international pop crossover. They were looking to expand their audience beyond their R&B roots. I remember when the hype when this video aired. They called it a world premiere.
What a groove! I love the guitar solo from The Time's Jesse Johnson on this track. And the usage of the sympathizer just goes. I even love the way the band members danced in sync to the groove. Song is TIGHT!. So horrible they don't make music like this anymore. Really is a crying shame :(
+madamhummingbird I watched another video and it looks like the bass sound is actually done with a guitar, which I find hard to believe. wondering if they used a bass player when they hit the recording studio. The 80's were an amazing time! 😃
***** Speaking of "Dead Giveaway", Jesse Johnson from "The Time" (another awesome 80's band) plays rhythm guitar on this track & is uncredited. As for the bassist, I don't know who he (or she) is playing the bass parts, but it's TIGHT.
Jody Watley. Wow. So beautiful. So elegant. Simply gorgeous. And you know what? I just looked at her Wiki page and 60 years old she still looks incredible. That's actually the only song I know by Shalamar.
This track is sooooo much better than those that make the charts these days, meaning dance tracks. This is so very well produced and HAS A MELODY!!! No messing about with vocals or anything, just great dance music!!!!!!!!!!!
My favorite '80s song (for me that's saying something), and DEEPLY underrated. I don't know if it's the amazing synth, the bass, or that great guitar solo, but I just ADORE this song.
I can't put my finger on it either, but it's always among my top 15 songs of the decade. And I'm an 80s fanatic! It's just completely satisfying every time!
During this period one could see the growth coming from Jody Watley. She was really coming to herself. She was right to go solo. She look’s so iconic here
Uptown Festival from 77, brought me here. It's cool to see how they went from Disco in the late 70s, to The Second Time Around in early 80, to a lively music video hit in 83. Dancin in the sheets a year later was good too.
Yeah, "Dead Giveaway" is my FAVORITE Shalamar song! According to Jody Watley, she and lead singer, Howard Hewitt were at ODDS during the filming of the song's music video and she QUIT the group right after the video wrapped. So, it UNLIKELY that she was really the MASKED girl who was supposed to have a CRUSH on him.
