OK, the story behind this song is that the lyrics are actually words overheard by Knopfler himself, spoken by some warehouse workers. Back in the early 80's, after the birth of MTV, many fans, and detractors, finally got to see what their favourite rock stars looked like, and their lifestyles. Sting has a role in the original, singing backup and intoning the "I want my MTV" refrain. This was the catch phrase of the channel back then. The original video is definitely worth watching, and is a massive classic. It used then-groundbreaking CGI for it's time (actually, I think it was intended to look dated even then, to emphasize it's CGI-ness). The percussionist was Ray (something, can't remember!). He was in Elton John's band in the 70's, and is probably one of the very best in the business.
Sting did sing on the Studio Album, and was credited as a co-writer as the "I want my MTV" bit that Sting sings is to the tune of "Don't stand so close to me" which he wrote.
@@lindabergman3127What I hadn't mentioned was that one reason Mark wanted Sting for the part is not only he wanted it to use the music from "Don't stand so close to me" but also the Police did a promo for MTV where he said "I want my MTV."
It is the party rock anthem! The song is musical fun for them to play - the definition of stage jam. The video was so timely when made. It instantly became a classic symbol of the era.

Mark Knopfler wanted Sting on the original version as the ‘I want my MTV’ part is the same as the Police’s ‘Don’t Stand So Close to Me’ - which was a huge MTV hit at the time the song was written
Sting got a co-writing credit too, just for the use of his melody from 'Don't Stand So Close To Me' which Mark wanted to use. It must have earned him a lot over the years. Money for almost nothing you might say! 😁
Yes, Yes, Sting is on the Original Money for Nothing, you have to see the video. That album Brothers in Arms is incredible and sold many millions of copies. Also on the same night Paul McCartney comes out to do a great mini set, search for him at Concert for Montserrat. Amazing show, Note Ray Cooper going nuts on percussion. Enjoy! 🎸
This was part of the concert for Montserrat a caribbean Island. The islands volcano blew causing massive destruction, loss of life Nd evacuation of many islanders. Paul Mccartney was also in the concert and the late Beatles producer, George Martin conducted the orchestra.
I believe all of the main performers (or almost all at least) had recorded on Montserrat. In Mark Knopfler's (and Guy Fletcher's) case it was the mega-successful Brothers in Arms album which included Money for Nothing. The whole concert was fantastic. I still remember Paul McCartney trading licks with Mark Knopfler and Eric Clapton during the finale, with Elton John and Jools Holland on piano!
