      Fans add many years to a shingle roofs life. Especially if you live in a warmer summer climate. Here in New Jersey where i am. No fan means 5-10 years less on a New roof replacement. When a attic gets too hot it also over heats the shingles and after 10-15 years they start to crack.

    Is there a way to replace just the fan motor without removing the entire assembly? I noticed that the new fan had bolts on the cap.

    I think it's just an old roof. The glue had plenty of time to melt and hold during the summer even if that wasn't when it was installed.

      If a roof is installed in summer heat it adheres to the lower shingle very well. A summer roof is usually very heard to open up for repairs, unless its about 20 years old, then the sealant is dried out and brittle.. A winter roof light adheres to the lower shingles and is easy to open up. A winter roof only adheres to the top of the lower shingle granules. While a summer roof sealant melts into the lower shingle granules. The sealant will not remelt enough in the summer to go deep into the granules.......... I love repairing winter roofs and 20yr plus roofs. Often will not repair a newer summer roof. It is very hard to upon up a 5-7 year-old summer roof, almost guaranteed shingles will rip. (Winter roof is any roof installed under 60 degrees.)

    I just a solar attic fan and then started doing research after to find out they are very controversial and some people say absolutely do not use them as they can pull moist air into the attic as well as suck air condition out of the main space. That said I was left stressed because I feel I may have wasted money however it seems that you don't sign up for that ideology and you are indeed an advocate of a powered attic fan? Please share your thoughts

      I installed many roofing solar fans and i don't like most of them. They are expensive and not very environmental. Suck in pulling out attic air. The main reason to get hot air out of an attic in the summer is, extend life of shingles, prevent plywood delamination, helps keep home cooler.................. i don't see ac air being pulled out from home by attic fan, unless there is some type of hole somewhere.

    What is the recommendation to remove those antic fans, when I am getting new roof with ridge vents. Do you replace the whole sheathing board or just fill the hole where the old roof antic fan used to be?

    • @DanTheRoofer

      Always have to replace whole sheet of plywood by code.

    Dan, can I connect the power vent without a ground wire ? My line just has Neutral & power line.

      The fan will work. But you need ground by code.

    Have you ever fallen into the opening while laying fresh sheets of underlayment?.

    • @DanTheRoofer
      @DanTheRoofer  10 місяців тому

      No, But i fell off a roof once. I was 14 yrs old. Me my dad and his crew wore doing a roof about 2 hours away from my house. I had bad sneakers on, no grip. And this day it was a steep roof. I know i might slip, but it was a ranch house, i was young and loved jumping off trees etc!! Well i slid down and fell off, only 10 feet fall and i was young, bones wore like rubber... Now if it happened i probably break something. I would have never went up on a 2 story roof w those Nike sneakers. In the 90s every one wore adidas and reebok on roofs, they had great grip. New Fila is very good, but Fila only last me about 3-4 weeks, then the grip wears off.

      I am making videos as jobs come along. For the fan vid, that all. Normal 3 wire electrical hookup. The only part to get right is how to put back the shingles. That i show more of that in future videos. Recorded one yesterday, a tree put a hole in a roof.

    why dont you put ice and water shield under fan instead of felt? then install fan and put ice and water shield on top of fan covering nails you used to hold fan down? and also install new shingles instead of re using old ones ?

    • @DanTheRoofer
      @DanTheRoofer  8 місяців тому

      Great question. Most customers do not want to see patches on there roof. Ice is not needed, you could even do with out felt. Most important is use sealant on shingles. Roofs in the 1980 and back, never had ice, many did not have even tar paper on new homes in the 1970.... As long as you do a good job on the shingles nothing to warry about.

    • @waynelewis1177
      @waynelewis1177 8 місяців тому

      @DanTheRoofer thats fine but we are not in the 1980s lol everything was different then compared to now. why not do a better job and use better products that are available to us now? all homeowners here in nj rather us use new shingles even if you can see patch because tbe common bond will stick instead of using sealant on old shingles which will not out last the bond of new shingles .

    Don’t they have a replacement motor instead of all that work?

      Eventually It will leak. The flashing is shot by the time the fan fails..... rusty nails, rusty screws.... In my area very few electricians want to do this type of replacement. Not easy or fast to match new to the old.... By the time the electrician is finished it will be the same or more then a whole new fan and body..... **** The better question is whey didn't the last roofer who did a new roof, did not replace the fan!!!!!!**** I see it every day, cheap roofs. Thank you John for the question.
