Heat and moisture are bad for attics. When you don’t have proper ventilation in your attic, it can also raise your utility bill. A simple and cost effective solution is to install a solar attic fan.
Here are the tools you’ll need:
    reciprocating saw
    caulk gun
    sealant
    pry bar
    carpenter’s pencil or bright marker
    screws
The roof openting needs to be 14 inches around. The best way to mark it is to make a 14 inch round template, set it over the hole and mark your circle. Then you’ll just cut along the mark.
Before you can install the fan, you need to put a bead of sealant around the underside of the flashing. That’s so it will adhere to the roof and give it a good seal so it won’t leak. Then you slide it underneath the shingles and over the moisture barrier and screw it into place. Also, put sealant under the shingles that you pry loose to seal them back into place, and seal the screws as well.
That’s all there is to it. Barring no major problems, it should take about an hour to install. Solar attic fans cost approximately $300-500, but the great thing about them is they’ll never cost you a dime in electricity because the sun provides all of the power.

So far, so good! I installed this fan yesterday. ua-cam.com/users/postUgkx7yWIKcrbA9KMHkGSfcgxW2lsjHT6B8Sh I've been watching a continuous radon monitor in my house for about a week, and the levels have been running between 4.5 and 7.9 pCi/L. Shortly after I installed this fan, the radon level started dropping, and in less than 24 hours since I installed it, the level is now 1.9. My basement is approximately 2,000 square feet. Total home square footage above basement is approximately 4,000 square feet. The noise level so far is very quiet. Mine is installed indoors, so I had to purchase a cord and connector. If I have any problems later, I'll update my review. But for now, I'm very pleased with it.Update after 48 hours: Using a constant monitor, my radon is now fluctuating between 0.38 and 0.45 pCi/L. I've moved the monitor to my basement and am getting a constant 0.43 reading. After 24 hours, and when I know the weather will be safe, I'll place the monitor outside for about 12 hours. I'm thinking that the 0.38 to 0.45 may be the outside "ambient" radon level. I'm using this monitor (purchased from Amazon): Corentium Home Radon Detector by Airthings 223

What prevents this fan and others like it from drawing air from the living space that is already Air Conditioned? I just saw a video saying that unless you seal your attic from the living space, these fans usually end up drawing air from the living space which causes a loss of money through and overworked AC system.

    • @czarlguitarl

Attics are HVAC sealed by definition, if it's not HVAC sealed it's just shoddy half-baked construction of an upstairs unit, and you can better blame AC leakage on the shoddy construction than the solar attic fan.

    • @65csx83
      @65csx83 3 роки тому +1

@@solarfanman Actually, a solar fan is a poorer choice for attic cooling. Unless it is coupled with battery power it is inferior to just about any other system. My electric hi-volume attic fan with end gables would sometimes run until mid-night; long after a regular solar fan has quiesced. One of the fine qualities of my ridge vent is its siphoning effect which evacuates hot attic air sooner than a temp actuated fan and can continue drawing out hot air beyond the 85 degree shutdown temp of my thermal controlled attic fan. The roof fan and gable fan (separate applications) maintained attic temp down to about 100 which is about the on temp setting. Ridge vent did just as well but would cool attic down further than attic fan shutoff temp of 85 degrees.

When the sun is out, SunRise Solar fans are working hard to get ahead of the heat curve so that your attic isn't overwhelmed. When the sun goes down, "the heat is turned off" and the attic will no longer be subject to increasing heat.

Lol! What some people don’t realize is motors eventually go bad! He said wind turbines only pull 100 CFM!? How bout installing more than one?! Lol!
Sometimes the answer is right in your face! A wind turbine cost less than any power exhaust fan & you’ll replace motors through out the usage! Trust me I’ve replaced many! After 3-5 years they usually burn out!
What kinda warranty do you get on these solar powered exhaust fans?

No need for this junk. Just update your attic, seal up bypasses in the attic floor and add proper soffit and roof vents and that's it. Did he mention attic fans can depressurize your attic causing conditioned house air to get sucked into the attic.

That is not how you install a fan to a roof, he is also wearing a bucket harness bad idea wearing that on a roof osha would shut you down for that.
