The beginning is always hard and takes time
I was in Iceland in November last year having just got my first DSLR and I thought I was set for some good pictures. In the end I wasn't satisfied with anything I captured and I know now that it's just the start of the journey. Thank you so much for your inspiration, Mads!

I really like the underlying message here. Everything you go through, everything you learn can and will probably be useful for you at some point - so just keep on learning and trying new stuff. True not just for photography but for life in general.
Oh my God. I was so proud of my HDR images with Photomatix. Now I look back, and I mean only 4 years, and I want to vomit.
I'm in the lucky position that I accidentally deleted everything from my Photomatix time, but I feel your pain!
I sold my car using a couple of HDR-images, so they weren't all that terrible in those early and weird days 😶

The path to where we are now. I remember my wife and I when we started. Everything was shot right down to cemeteries. Then we discovered HDR and yeah. From people, our studio to landscapes. Now we are pretty much landscape photography. Cool to see your path to where you are today. It’s great to share with those just coming into photography and how practice, practice, watch videos, read, and time. It’s a very rewarding.

@Paul Fensome Based on the links, I think you've been in the warrens a little too long. Nobody ever lived 900 years. No giants ever turned into rocks, and there were never 50 mile high trees... The only real problem with UA-cam is that it gave a platform to the village idiots, and lets other idiots subscribe to them.

Incredible view, Mads. You were not shy to reveal the humble beginnings of your photography journey. The progression and change starting around 2015-2016 is quite astonishing and inspiring.

When the current emergency is over I'm going to get myself on a workshop which I've been promising myself for a long time. @@MadsPeterIversen Maybe it was 2015 to 2017. From the slide on 23:15 in 2015 to the trip you did to the Faroe Islands in 2017, it feels like there's such a brilliant jump from snapshots to gallery worthy imagery.
Very informative video Mads! Most people want things in a go but don't want to spend time. Masterpiece takes time and practice.
I have seen several of your videos over the past year and have been impressed not only with your photography but the way you explain things. After watching this video... Hey Mads! Again, great video. Thanks for being so transparent. The ONE thing I think others need to take away from this video is, it has taken you many years of practicing and shooting all the time. Making "Happy Mistakes". Experimenting and trying new forms of photography. To be great at anything takes time and practice. Many want it to happen overnight and that, unfortunately is not how it works. Thanks for showing the true way to get good at ( in this case photography ) but it works for anything you want to master. Great video. Given the current state of the world a long video actually was greatly welcomed. Interesting because just yesterday I thinking about my photographic journey (5 years now of taking photography seriously) and realized I hit a flat spot a couple of years ago. After some thinking it dawned on me that my skills were greatly lagging behind the type of photo I wanted to create. I knew what I wanted my style to be but didn't have the skills to create the shots. What broke me out was watching UA-cam videos (Thomas Heaton was the first and how I eventually found you) that taught me the skills I needed. I then combined this with formal training at the Rhode Island School of Design and in the last year feel like I've broken through. I still have a lot to learn (just started my learning journey with Lumenzia and luminosity masks) but I feel I am now shooting with more purpose than I ever have.
It is an interesting video to see progression in photography and style. And you are right, going back on some images there is always a gold one to re-edit and give it a new life. Good video thank you Mads. Practice is the key!

I am a retired university professor of urology, passionate about photography, nature, and now learning and practicing photo editing. I learned many years ago with photoshop and lightroom but today I am an Affinity Photo lover. It was worth the change. From Bogota, Colombia.
This was such a great photo to watch as someone who feels her photography journey in a never growing skill. It made me look back through old photos and work through. I don’t get out as much as I like, but I have learnt so much more than I’d realised. Thank you for giving me the realisation.

We have a similar time line and approach of trying different subject matter but you have advanced so much farther than I. You cannot discount your huge talent, eye and stamina. I think you are the very best.
This is one of the most fun and inspirational videos on photography that i've ever seen. Thank you for being humble enough to make it, "exposing" yourself with your beginner photos and showing your "bad ones" too ! :)
It's amazing how seemingly all photographers go through more or less the same phases. I can recognize myself in a lot of what you said and showed - i also started as a teenager, photographing random things on my tiny Canon pocket-camera. I eventually got a 2nd hand Nikon DSLR but only shot jpg because i didn't know any better. I then also "took the scary dive" and went into raw and yes, obviously i went through the horrible "HDR" phase :D. And i also tend to generally bring my camera everywhere with me today, and i photograph practically everything i see and find interesting. The major difference between us tho is that i am still stuck in the "my photos suck" phase. I've spent hundreds, probably thousands of hours of watching tutorials on photography and editing, i've taken thousands of photos... and still almost every time i am done with a trip and the editing, i find all my photos to be crap. I lack style, i lack skill, i lack a direction too since i photograph everything and don't stick with any particular subject.
I very recently (last month) finally upgraded from my 2nd camera (D7000) to a Z5, preparing for our future vacations, exploration and trips. We are planning to visit the Faroe Islands, Island, Asia, USA and practically everything else we can in the world but i have to admit - i am positively horrified of "wasting" the opportunity that i'll probably only have once on my lifetime, by taking bad shots and editing them poorly.
I do wish i had some actual feedback tho, i've only have my family and mostly my wife to show my photos to (even tho i publish most of my stuff on Deviantart), and they generally consider them to be "pretty damn good"... but that's not very objective. Where did you find that "group of photographers" who have helped you?
Mads, thanks for the video. I am a struggling beginner. I have taken thousands of photos and two come close to being any good. I struggle with composition and editing so I am thoroughly amateur. I really enjoy your photos. I also appreciate your enthusiasm. Your enthusiasm comes through your work and your videos. I will take one of your tutorials next year. I have purchased one of your e-books and as soon as I can figure out how to access it I will read it. Keep up the great work, and keep the videos and photographs coming. Best to you.

Great video Mads. This sort of thing is always encouraging to watch to remind us that we all started somewhere. I can't compare my work to yours but I know my work has improved out of sight in the past 7 years, since I got back into photography after a very long hiatus. Keep them coming!
Its quite an encouragement to see that even a photographer of your present day caliper had a bad start as far as quality. I can look back at a lot of my old photos and see where there was or is much room for improvement. I feel much more satisfied with many of my present day images as well. Thank you for sharing your own experiences. It should be a big encouragement to many who are just getting started in photography. You are still one of the top photographers that I enjoy and can learn from on you tube. It is really really amazing how fast that you reached your skill level of today. As you said though the key is practice and the more we can practice the faster we can all improve.
Invest the time and effort and we get better, and it's all just work, fun and satisfying.
Interesting to see someone else’s beginnings. I purchased a D700 in 2010 having not really done any serious photography prior to that. I went from a Motorola Rizer camera/phone to the D700, and the learning curve went straight up. From the beginning I had the intention of getting into RAW as well as manual shooting, that took six months...
No I’ve not done/been all of the places/things you’ve done, but it’s been fun none the less...

I usually enjoy your videos and while this one was interesting in a sense, I would have like a more detailed breakdown of why you felt some shots weren't effective.

What a great story and journey you have documented. It's such a good reminder that we all have to start somewhere and that through practice we will improve - as long as we resolve to learn and grow. I loved the LSD trip reference on the HDR haha, whenever I see an HDR photo overdone I think of psychedelic visuals as well.

Thank you for sharing that inspirational video about the path you took on your way to becoming a landscape photographer. Although some of your early photos may not have been perfect, it is clear that your talent for capturing images that worked across several genres was latent. I think you could have developed your 'people photos' and portraiture into something quite extraordinary had you ever wanted to.

As always throughout history artists are their own worst critics! Amazing how what we viewed of our work only a few years back has changed IF WE CONTINUE TO GROW,and what we thought was amazing at the time is presently just “so so “. yet there are always a few that unintentionally continue to inspire us from the past and we cherish our growth and saw the potential that spurned us on to our never ending evolution as artists ....to create our own unique style ...a day to day learning experience .Some planned ...some we just fell into without ever realizing at the moment what was happening ...our NEED to create and fill our souls with the creative forces so necessary for our own personal development ...a SOUL FOOD so to speak...Thanking you as always Mads for your continued inspiration and Knowledge... your taking us to places we might not otherwise see ...the hard work and effort on your part ...helping us all as a community continue to grow, stay well and stay blessed my friend...

I like your style and it's very similar to my own. I use the term "Transformative Photography" where it looks more like your imagination than real life. I really prefer looking at these kinds of photos and seek out as many examples as I can find.

About 10 years ago on my 2nd nude shoot I thought the photos were amazing but the model probably because we had a few words on another issue told me the photos were rubbish.
This quite upset me and left me dejected for days and then the photos were forgotten. I came across them recently and upon seeing them had to agree they were indeed rubbish.
Another photo I came across, a portrait taken about the same time I was quite amazed at and swiftly came to another conclusion that I have been going downhill ever since.
Ah well, keep plodding on.

Wonderful idea for a vlog, Mads! So great to see your progression over time. The problem I have found is that as I have become a much better photographer since I got serious about photography two years ago, the images I used to think were wonderful turned out to be rather ordinary or just not very good. That is oddly depressing, because I now worry that the images I'm presently taking and think are great aren't *really* any good and will look ordinary in another year's time. But as problems go, I can't deny that it's one of the best to have.

Funny you where one of my inspirations for my first trip to Iceland (next Faroe Islands ).You are also the reason i know i have some more distance to go till I'm happy with the shots i take .Whenever i go through my favorites folder which is in chronological order i definitely see improvment .

Fascinating insight into your journey Mads and to see how you have developed over the years. With the current situation in the world at the moment, one of my aims is to try and improve my post processing skills and knowledge more, especially in the use of Photoshop and will go be revisiting some of my older images to see what improvements, if any, can be made.
