Here's a rarely discussed one. In FF6, you know Solitary Island where you start in the WoR? Go back there with steal. You can steal *megalixirs* from the random encounters. It's tough to steal, and the mobs automatically die really quick, but it's a source of infinite megalixirs from mobs that literally can't even defend themselves.
The gladius in ff12, great damaging weapon for the early game and the mage masher from ff9, another good early game weapon and considered by some to be important when trying to get excalibur 2.
The metagame of using Steal, Blue Magic, and Morph in FFT:Advance was a huge part of the interest for the first half. Once you get the capacity to Steal Weapon everything really opens up, because the weapons are where all the great active skills are.
I'm a little sad that he didn't mention FFTA because of just how much stealing changes up your experience of the game. For the uninitiated, you can grind up your negotiation skill at the beginning of the game by dumping party members and spamming recruitment quests. It's a painfully long procedure, but it rewards you with a weapon that teaches you steal ability. Not only does this allow you to cheat on learning a lot of human abilities, but it also allows you to get access to steal weapon far earlier than you have any right to. And yet this was designed intentionally because there are a number of hidden weapons located in story missions before you would normally have access to the ability. By stealing the weapons off of certain characters, they have a chance to re-equip a much rarer weapon. This method is the most consistent way to get the Scorpion Tail, the Zeus Mace, and the Materia Blade, which teach Meteor, Ultima Blow, and Ultima Charge respectively.
FFTA needed two things to be playable/good for me: Being able to recruit my own characters and NAME THEM myself. No Job based Stat growths. Made leveling teammates a chore if you wanted to min max. I could settle for the min maxing staying, but both FFTA games were never playable for me because of the random names. Games made 20 years before had this simple feature. If only there was a mod.
I love getting Steal: Ability in the beginning of the game via farming Reserve missions. Also, FFTA had steals that weren't even visible items, you had to steal a weapon and then wait for the enemy to re equip a better one to steal. Like the Ultima ability weapons
I’m surprised the accessory Chantage from Final Fantasy Tactics was not on this list, but the Masamune was. The Chantage is able to be stolen from the battle with Meliadoul. It has Always:Reraise, which is far more powerful than the masamune. And like the masamune, which can only be obtained one other obscure way, the Chantage can also only ever be obtained by poaching a porky, which is… a very, very tedious chore.
@@TheXBladeist those boars can't be encountered maps. You have to recruite a normal boar, which only shows up on a few specific story maps. Then breed it for the rarer boars and poach those.
The Ziedrich is definitely one of the best armors in FF7 but keep in mind for the original PS1 release, Magic Def from armor didn't work due to programming error.
It's still perhaps one of the best items you can take whenever you're trying to clear emerald weapon. After all, you can't load yourself up with materia, otherwise you die. So it all ends up gucci!
Honorable mention: Gungnir in FF3DS. This weapon was exclusive to that version of the game, and was iirc either the second or best spear in the game, it was the biggest factor as to whether you'd have a Dragoon in your team for the boss of the game. The ONLY way to get this was to steal it from Odin, if you missed it, there was NO chance at another.
I spent LOTS of time stealing everything from Elmdore before War of the Lions came out. I remember being pretty upset that they made it impossible with WotL. Glad you mentioned FFT in this video!

The Minerva bustier is another great choice for final fantasy 6, but you could only steal it from Tonberries as well as the goddess boss in kefka's Tower The Minerva bustier provides amazing defense and magic defense, absorbs fire, ice, and lightning magic with the trade-off being it can only be worn by Terra or Celes.

I hate the "steal" function in JRPGs almost as much as I hate the "jump" command. Putting a thief in your party essentially means losing a whole attack for your turn while the thief struggles with stealing items that have worse success odds than casinos. It's tedious having to try to steal over and over and over while the other party members just wait and heal every now and then for an item that has a 1/255 chance of appearing. It's a wasted turn.
Stealing was so incredibly important in FFIX - not just because you got some insanely good items and equipment from it, but because stealing with ANY character with the ability, not just main protagonist Zidane, powered up the tailed bandit's strongest attack, Thievery.
Both Celestriad and Soul of Thamasa are a nightmare to get in FF6, but SoT in particular, besides the one you get from the Cultist's Tower, you can only farm stealing from Red Glutturns A monster you only find in the last optional dungeon of the game, the Soul Shrine and they're level 91
FYI- The Genji armor was totally in FF2 (at least in the Origins port). I only caught that because I totally beat it for the first time today and totally equipped Firion with it (they weren't steals though, but they were in boss chests in the Jade Passage)
Ahh I remember being afraid of killing bosses before I could steal everything from them. 9 was the best once again cause the bosses would often have several cool things. Oh man, scratch that, TACTICS made me feel that way the most, attempting to steal ALL of Elmdor’s clothes.
you should of added the Healings staff from ff5, you can steal it shortly after the fire crystal area where you meet cid and mid, and you want it cause healing takes alot in ff5 but healing staff you can use as a regular item and it'll heal your whole party for a substancial amount, and it scales the more powerful your user is. I honestly think its the best thing you can steal in that game as it's pretty much a cheat heal till the final dungeon.
Whilst not completely OP, the Blood Sword can be stolen from a Seeker in the Tomb of Raithwall in FFXII and was so powerful at the time for its damage and sap ability. Best thing I’ve stolen casually
You can get a Karkata from the Flowering Cactoid in the Trial Mode of TZA. Casts Confuse on hit and is basically a late...ish game weapon. Can be obtained very early in a new game.
I always ignored steals in the final battle in FFVI, as final boss steals are usually consumables so this is really cool to find out something knew about a game I've played for decades.
My first playthrough of FF9, I stole the fairy flute from Heidegigas. Didn’t take long, equipped it on Eiko for a triple-speed learning of ability up. I’ve spent hours on it since, in subsequent playthroughs, and never stole it again.

I'd argue for Final Fantasy V, that its version of the Blood Sword is a far more powerful addition to the arsenal than the Genji Equipment, which even wasn't the most powerful armor in each case. Bloodsword could be stolen from King Behemoth. Bloodsword + X-Fight meant absolute domination AND immediate recovery, only to be beaten maybe by Gil Toss. Only exception is of course when used against undead.
Nearly any item ffrom Final Fantasy VIII could've been on this list, but the absurd and wild drop rates for each one would be insane to properly explain.
One of my favorite builds in FF6 were to have characters loaded with fire drink items, one with Melton and Econimizer equipped. With this, you'd be unstoppable.
Suddenly reminded of FF VII's Morph mechanic and the one playthrough when I forgot to get the Underwater Materia....and had to beat Emerald without it. Fun Fact: The timer keeps counting down during the XP and Item screens....that alone caused 3 reloads.
How about a video on overpowered gear that is simple to obtain relatively early on? I am pretty sure those exist in the FF series in a similar way to the “Unkempt Harold” from Borderlands 2. Which is a 10% drop from an easy to farm enemy just after the tutorial and then can be, despite the low level of the weapon, easily carry the player until the mid to late game.
Ok quick question what is the best item(s) to steal from Beatrix. Cause no matter how much I try because it's timed an don't have the thief's gloves by this time I could never steal everything?
The Economizer from FFVI, featured in another recent video, is one I stole. In about an hour of thievery, you can get a good set! A rather obscure set of equipment known as the Imp set can be acquired in FFVI as well. Almost all pieces can only be stolen, other options for one part is to win from a Tyrannosaur and another won from the arena after stealing something else. The set is worthless unless equipped as a whole and the user placed in Imp status, making them virtually indestructible. The weapon of the set can also be equipped to Gau!
I would add ff3 to the list. It results that not everyone knows that you can steal the Gugnir from Odin when you fight him in the remakes. The problem is that the only requirement is a thief at least level 72. He has the best lance both as a common steal and rare drop. So. If lucky enough. You can get 2 copies
I remember in FF10, when I realized that Kimahri could obtain the Steal command already around Mi'ihen Highroad, I put everything in my power to unlock it then, imagining what amazing treasures the mobs and bosses before Guadosalam must have been holding.............. and then they didn't.
Teaching Kimahri Steal early still has its benefits, it allows you to steal Petrify Grenades on the Djose Highroad, which is already a good item in itself, but when Rikku joins you can immediately use them to customize Stonestrike, or Stoneproof to equipment. Not to mention Kimahri having the Steal command, allows him to steal Lv 3 Key Spheres from the Biran and Yenke fight at Gagazet.
It's my favorite final fantasy. Also stealing was a bitch when it came to betrix as her battles were turn limited so you couldn't stall her and steal her stuff.
Dragon Whisker as a rare steal from Shinryu, one of the two uber bosses from Final Fantasy V. Could also be acquired as a rare drop from a rare enemy called Stingray. Either way was quite hard to get.
I wonder, why you aren't mention the Wyrm Blade from FF XII. Besides Ribbons, you can steal that sword in trial mode too. It's also way easier to obtain through that and not by the normal way.
Ugh, stealing from FF12 in general was a pain. You technically had to steal items to make the tournesol. But zodiac age did trivialize a lot of stuff considering they let you keep stuff from trial mode.
It definitely helped trivialize early game (hell, the westersand in general did if you managed to survive, what with the heavy lance and flame staff from Fideliant and Dustia) since you could get the gradius from the Lindbur wolf pretty much right after you got Penelo. Only one common enemy is immune to it early on and that's the cockatrice, everything else was fair game. It was a pain though.
I thought for sure he'd finish that sentence with, "into Cloud." (Or was it Zack? It's been awhile, plus I've beat that game half a dozen times and I still don't get the whole storyline 😂)
Any steal in FFT is a hard one. It's a harrowing ordeal until you see that little "(Stolen)" come up. Nothing quite like leaving Magic City Garland then spending 20 hours in Mandalia Plains until you can encounter rogue knights/squires/rogues and such to steal from. Always felt good. But aside from FFT, I think XII had the most rewarding steal system. X or XII. Both made it very rewarding to steal in.
In a rather silly fit of stubbornness, I spent close to two weeks irl (upwards of 25 hrs of gameplay) attempting to steal both the Chain Plate and Mythril Sword from Beatrix in your first encounter with her in FFIX. I know both were obtainable shortly after that fight, but damnit, I wanted them NOW! Probably just a string of bad luck that it took so long, but that was a slog for sure!
1:15 the First item on your list here ,The Robe Of Lord's, is an item I currently am using on my White Mage, Princess Garnet Til Alexandros XVII Mommy (A.K.A Garnet) ((you get to name her)) My current Stats for Her: Lvl 55 Speed - 28 Strength - 39 Magic - 48 Spirit - 30 Attack - 36 Defense - 49 Evade - 20 Magic Def - 54 Magic Eva - 20 Not bad for near the end of the game!
I think Masumune was more popularized by Chrono Trigger. Sure, FFVII was more popular, but in CT, you get to meet Masa and Mune and go on a long adventure to repair the sword.
I managed to get 3 copies of the Ribbon in FFXII: The Zodiac Age. Here’s how: - Hunt Club - Henne Mines Special Charter Shaft - Subterra: Abyssal - North in the Pharos
Black mage with samurai secondary job able to use Murasame, Kiyomori, Masamune, and Chirijiraden. That's about as OP as it gets. Equip flash hat, wizard robe, and wizard rod, and then give them with dragon spirit for a reaction ability (reraise) since they don't have the ability to res each other.
Oh also, in case anyone wondered, you can dupe katanas in the original game, so you don't have to worry about it breaking as long as you have a whole bunch of extras duped.
For me the best isn’t listed on here is to steal from Galypdes/Aquila the Celestriad/Economizer although it’s a rare steal. But if you bet the Murakumo/Strato in the coliseum you can fight them with Locke with a chance to steal since they’re harder to find in the Phoenix Cave. After you win the prize Holy/Pearl Lance can be better to win back the Murakumo and repeat the cycle to get as many Celestriads you need.
Honesty, I only used the Steal ability in Final Fantasy X. Why? I don't know. I guess because of my huge nostalgia for the game and how much I put a lot of hours into it, more than any other Final Fantasy game I've played up until that point (aside from VIII). Even after playing Final Fantasy X, I went back to play the others and I never felt to do it as much. It's still a handy ability, I just don't use it as much.
FFX and 12 are really the only games where I stole the most. Definitely in 12 with the amount loot required to make the strongest weapons. I didn't bother much with stealing in the other games either.

Gilgameshs rebirth appearance was by far the best. They included him in such an organic way
I’m surprised the accessory Chantage from Final Fantasy Tactics was not on this list, but the Masamune was.
Low poach rate I'd guess?
Unless you recruit and breed them, only to poach them in battle…messed up, but more effective than hoping for an encounter.
@@TheXBladeist those boars can't be encountered maps. You have to recruite a normal boar, which only shows up on a few specific story maps. Then breed it for the rarer boars and poach those.
Not to mention all the Genji gear from Marquis Elmdor
Lol 9:25 not sure if intentional but "sephiroth which thrust the masamune into POPULAR CULTURE" and not anything else
I've been waiting for this video! This is an amazing topic to go over! There's so many good things you can steal from enemies throughout the series and you guys have listed quite a few great ones!
If possible, could you go over the hardest items to steal at some point in the future?
The Minerva bustier is another great choice for final fantasy 6, but you could only steal it from Tonberries as well as the goddess boss in kefka's Tower
The Minerva bustier provides amazing defense and magic defense, absorbs fire, ice, and lightning magic with the trade-off being it can only be worn by Terra or Celes.
Minerva bustier can get from treasure chest, don't need to steal it.
@@hewmengshen7781 That's true for one of them, but you have to steal the others
No,I remember I can get two from the chest, one for celeb, one for Terra.
One from the tower of fanatics, one from kefka tower
@@hewmengshen7781 Tower of Fanatics you can get:
Air Anchor
Holy Lance(rare steal from Holy Dragon, but you need to set Berserk on someone who can equip Thief's Knife)
Ichegi(needed to get Shadow from the Coluseum)
An orb that doubles MP pool(I forgot it's name)
"Couldn't steal anything..."
Both Celestriad and Soul of Thamasa are a nightmare to get in FF6, but SoT in particular, besides the one you get from the Cultist's Tower, you can only farm stealing from Red Glutturns
A monster you only find in the last optional dungeon of the game, the Soul Shrine and they're level 91
Thanks for all the amazing content!
3:54 I’m not crying, you’re crying… man, why does that song hit me so hard in the nostalgia
you should of added the Healings staff from ff5, you can steal it shortly after the fire crystal area where you meet cid and mid, and you want it cause healing takes alot in ff5 but healing staff you can use as a regular item and it'll heal your whole party for a substancial amount, and it scales the more powerful your user is.
Honourable mention: FF12 Zodiac age- Wyrmhero blade from Famfrit on trial mode stage 50.
I always ignored steals in the final battle in FFVI, as final boss steals are usually consumables so this is really cool to find out something knew about a game I've played for decades.
FF9: if you're far enough to already defeat Hades and Ozma, the Robe of Lords is useless to you. There's basically no game left to use it on. 😝
the Cinqueda from FF Tactics Advance always stands out in my mind for weapons u wanna get early game, so u could steal the steal sword ability early
My first playthrough of FF9, I stole the fairy flute from Heidegigas. Didn’t take long, equipped it on Eiko for a triple-speed learning of ability up.
I’ve spent hours on it since, in subsequent playthroughs, and never stole it again.
Same 😢
Carob Nut from Vlakorados at FF7... It's a must to get the Golden Chocobo 👍🏼
As a long time final fantasy fan. I love your narration and the details you put into these videos. I am running through to of the games I own. Final fantasy 10/10 2 and final fantasy 13. Looking for some tips on these games and saw you. Fantastic videos! Now I wanna see more.
hi daryl and lauren just wanted to say i love your podcasts so so so much, even in the past year of covid and hearing how much of a struggle it must have been to keep putting them out weekly. i started listening in 2015 and would binge them at work, on transit, even in class (oops) and have so many good memories associated with the podcast that i have you to thank for! love you guys and the amazing content you have been putting out for the better part of 2 crazy decades now
I'd argue for Final Fantasy V, that its version of the Blood Sword is a far more powerful addition to the arsenal than the Genji Equipment, which even wasn't the most powerful armor in each case.
Bloodsword could be stolen from King Behemoth.
Bloodsword + X-Fight meant absolute domination AND immediate recovery, only to be beaten maybe by Gil Toss.
Only exception is of course when used against undead.
Casually shows Elmdore wielding a Masamune AND FULL GENJI GEAR.
The kupo-dammed flute from the Orgre in Ff9. Haunts me to this day
Whoa why am I getting octopath traveler vibes
Great video. I have a FF9 save with 4 Robe of Lords and only 1 is from Chocobo Hot and Cold
Rikku & Zidane- Now this looks like a job for me
Locke- They always forget me.
I can’t help but think of early final fantasy where your thief couldn’t steal. 🤣
FFIX was fun because stealing from bosses was actually worthwhile
XII was also amazing for stealing
FF7R has a powerful staff for Aerith that can be snatched from Eligor, the boss fight of the haunted trainyard
Shout out to Al Bhed potions in X for letting my thief be useful.
Nearly any item ffrom Final Fantasy VIII could've been on this list, but the absurd and wild drop rates for each one would be insane to properly explain.
I remember the Ziedrich absolutely trivializing most mainline story fights after getting it.
Fun Fact: The timer keeps counting down during the XP and Item screens....that alone caused 3 reloads.
you can get underwater anytime until you give kalm traveller last object...
Unkempt Harold, huh? That's cute.
Since I am playing through the whole series this will be very helpful!!
Ok quick question what is the best item(s) to steal from Beatrix. Cause no matter how much I try because it's timed an don't have the thief's gloves by this time I could never steal everything?
The Artemis arrows and bow, from Valkyrie, on the moon, in FFIV.
I remember grinding hours for an Economizer, then iirc, I got a second one as I was leaving 😂
Came here to make sure economizer got love from SOMEONE.
Sadly that’s pretty much the only reason to train a thief in III 😕
@@ThundagaT2 .... true.... guess it wasn't a complete waste.
Man Final Fantasy 9 was such an excellent game. Shout out to FF9 ya'll
Ff9 is also the only final fantasy can steal three times different item from enemy!
It's my favorite final fantasy. Also stealing was a bitch when it came to betrix as her battles were turn limited so you couldn't stall her and steal her stuff.
Stealing Robes from Ozma,by that time u wont need it.
Dragon Whisker as a rare steal from Shinryu, one of the two uber bosses from Final Fantasy V.
Could also be acquired as a rare drop from a rare enemy called Stingray.
Either way was quite hard to get.
Yes, I loved tackling the extra dungeon in FFVI with two ultimate weapons just to destroy everything, well almost everything
Stealing any of the elemental guns for Mustadio absolutely breaks the game in original PS1 FFT. Makes him better than Orlandu.
Stealing a Ribbon from Atma on the floating continent in VI is a good one too.
Stealing great trango from zodiark was cursed in the zodiac age though
Stealing stuff to make the Tournesol becomes a lot easier when you realize a lot of the stuff you need can be stolen infinitely from Trophy Rare Game
Missed opportunity:
"Fresh off its association with Sephiroth, which thrust the Masamune into popular culture (and Aeris's torso)"
ooh, that masamune description, “fresh off its depiction in ff7, it thrusts”. masterful. clever.
I thought for sure he'd finish that sentence with, "into Cloud."
(Or was it Zack? It's been awhile, plus I've beat that game half a dozen times and I still don't get the whole storyline 😂)
Any steal in FFT is a hard one. It's a harrowing ordeal until you see that little "(Stolen)" come up. Nothing quite like leaving Magic City Garland then spending 20 hours in Mandalia Plains until you can encounter rogue knights/squires/rogues and such to steal from. Always felt good.
But aside from FFT, I think XII had the most rewarding steal system. X or XII. Both made it very rewarding to steal in.
loved this video, stealing in jrpg is so addicting 🙇♀
In a rather silly fit of stubbornness, I spent close to two weeks irl (upwards of 25 hrs of gameplay) attempting to steal both the Chain Plate and Mythril Sword from Beatrix in your first encounter with her in FFIX. I know both were obtainable shortly after that fight, but damnit, I wanted them NOW! Probably just a string of bad luck that it took so long, but that was a slog for sure!
Love the content! Keep up the great work 😊
1:15 the First item on your list here ,The Robe Of Lord's, is an item I currently am using on my White Mage, Princess Garnet Til Alexandros XVII
Mommy (A.K.A Garnet)
((you get to name her))
My current Stats for Her:
Lvl 55
Speed - 28
Strength - 39
Magic - 48
Spirit - 30
Attack - 36
Defense - 49
Evade - 20
Magic Def - 54
Magic Eva - 20
Not bad for near the end of the game!
Genji stuff stolen in FFT is for sure one of the strongest steals! But that damn vampire status...
I think Masumune was more popularized by Chrono Trigger. Sure, FFVII was more popular, but in CT, you get to meet Masa and Mune and go on a long adventure to repair the sword.
In ff6 u can also steal genii gloves form the white dragons in the floating island
I managed to get 3 copies of the Ribbon in FFXII: The Zodiac Age. Here’s how:
- Hunt Club
- Henne Mines Special Charter Shaft
- Subterra: Abyssal - North in the Pharos
Payday: Final Fantasy lookin' amazing so far. Can't wait for the devs to finally start releasing public builds.
Double lance in ff5 is a very powerful early weapon and it attacks twice, use with double weapon and you get 4 attacks in one move
Stealing the Genji set in FF Tactics from the Silver Ogre is FKIN HARD!!!
He turns members undead, and hes strong AF
If I recall correctly, you need a female Sagittarius signed thief with a ton of brave to get the best chance.
@@SaltyLocke ya i remember my chances being like 8-11%.
I spent about an hour and a half on that battle
I didn't bother much with stealing in the other games either.
it's not stealing but i like the guardian forces you can draw from enemies in ff8
These are giving me so much anxiety! 😂How many did I miss?!!!
@@garfreeek The bosses in the final dungeon of the game will have them if you missed any. Though you’ll still need to level them up and attune with em…
@@maxspecs That helps A LOT! It's just the completion aspect of it! 😁
Make kimahri learn steal so he can steal lv4 keysphere at mt gagazet ronso bossfight
Where does the background music come from?
i got an idea for an offshoot of this video top 7-10 things that you can steal that makes you powerful early in the game (ex could be the Hardedge ff7) be it weapon armor or item
Deathbringer from FFXII
Ok for a good second I did not think this was a FF video
I just steal from everyone until it says “nothing to steal..”
Side note: ff8 was the only final fantasy where you could steal summons and magic from an enemy.
One could argue that the player steals Famfrit from Doctor Cid in FFXII, although that one isnt mid battle. You do get his summon after defeating him though.
What? You mean taking stuff from chest inside someone home is not stealing? 😅
I remember stealing three stars in FF6, it makes all your magic 1 mp cost, i just can't remember what enemy i stole it from
Bro you did not use Rikku doing the thumbnail face lmfao
Great video though
