      He gave in and gave up when he knew Hollywood wouldn’t want him to be in any roles. So he folded and worked behind the scenes in Asia. With luck with have it, he got bought back into Hollywood to give him one more opportunity. I am sure certain fat cats at Hollywood didn’t want to give him anything but others certainly remembered him and willing to give him a chance.

    Michelle Yeoh has accomplished so much even before the Oscar. Even without the Oscar, she’s still one of the best actresses out there, regardless of race. Unfortunately, like any industry race plays a big role. She’s proven herself among her acting peers yet once again.

      @No Name asian films need more asian people in them . Go ask tyler perry to make a film if you want to see black actors and go ask jack black to make a film if you want to see white actors .

      @craigalston2208 Рік тому

      @No Name you just haven't looked in the right places. There are lots of Asian films in Asian speaking countries . Unlike most americans the Asian people learn to speak 2 languages , their own as well as a foreign language which is why you can find american and european films in their countries but few of their films in other countries . Even most europeans learn to speak another language , while americans struggle just to learn one language .

    • @craigalston2208
      @craigalston2208 Рік тому

      @No Name actually it just goes to show how IGNORANT the rest of the world is if they don't want to learn another language . It would be interesting to see what would happen to the world if the Chinese workers went on strike considering China practically makes electrical parts for ALL products .

    • @craigalston2208
      @craigalston2208 Рік тому

      @No Name actually thanks to you it just occurred to me that I haven't seen any black / african speaking countries that are capable of making a film on their own in their own language UNLIKE the asian countries . I can't think of black /african film company that is 100% , no help from whites , black /african owned . The few blacks / africans who are actors speak EVERY language EXCEPT for a african language in the film's they are part of . 99% of blacks / africans are working in films produced / owned by whites . 99% of Western films portray asians as the villains so I would say that western and Eastern films are even on casting each other as villains .

    I imagine that Key Hue Quan at the Oscar’s thought about his past. About how he immigrated into the United States of America and was teased a lot about being Vietnamese and being Asian. But he changed when his brother was auditioning for Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom he was asked if he wanted to try, and Quan responded, “sure, why not?” And when he did he eventually got chosen. Now for the film Everything Everywhere All At Once, it has 7 Oscar awards and Quan is nominated as supporting actor role. Such a great guy 😊

    Not only was the number of Asian roles a challenge, but it's also challenging when someone becomes famous as a child. Many times they can't blend seamlessly into an adult actor. And, really I LOVE this actor as such a wonderful person, but have to admit he has a very atypical speech pattern, and that probably narrows available roles too. But despite all of that, his character and his talent came through. I loved seeing him with Ford and seeing Spielberg seeing this. How momentous and I can't wait to see him in more roles that do justice to his talent!

    I do not know how to explain my feeling as seeing him winning and yea his speech in Oscar, and knowing what he deal with for years. I am happy for him and also feel the struggling he had and yes even live could be ups and downs and maybe due to our priorities, reasons some of us change, and give up our dreams. However, even for people give up dreams, we can still have new one. All dreams takes our efforts, time to achieve and I can only hope for all, things turn our the way we hope as it is positive and good.

    As heartwarming as this story is, the real test for whether there is any meaningful change going forward, will be the extent that there are acting opportunities for Asians (and, in particular - Asian males) when casting decisions are being made.
    It is notable that the two movies most commonly referenced as advancing Asian representation in film (Crazy Rich Asians, and now Everything Everywhere All At Once) both guaranteed Asian casting because of some central premise of the film (You can't easily cast white actors, when the Asian identity of the character is central to the premise of the film). Outside of such a premise, the reality that Ke Huy Quan faced is that (up to now) nobody in Hollywood wanted to cast Asian actors (in the case of Asian men - basically not at all, in the case of Asian women - generally only as sex objects).
    Indeed this prejudice is so strong that even where a character is written to be Asian, this can be 'retconned' to turn the character White (see: Marvel's 'Ancient One', which would have required hiring an Asian Male - rewritten to have a white female), or just have a White actress playing the role of a half-Asian character (see: Emma Stone in Aloha). Sometimes, the entire cast can be rewritten to be white - except for the villain, who stays Asian (see: Avatar, the Last Airbender). Or, the source material/context is conveniently ignored in order to have a white Actress (see: Scarlett Johansson in Ghost in the Shell).
    Which is not to say that any single decision to make a character White is necessarily wrong. However, when everyone does it, you end up with Ke Huy Quan's situation - where there are simply no opportunities for decades on end because you're Asian (I note that 'diversity' in media since the 90's up to maybe a few years ago in practice meant 'Black').
    So the real test from this: For films/media where the race of the character isn't a central premise to the show, what opportunities exist for Asians?

      Yes what you say is true but what about Latinos. There are more Latinos than Asians in the US and do they have fair representation these days?
      It’s kind of an up and down cycle for all.

    It's a true dream come true to see the young actors we grew up with fall down and then rise above on such achievements 🙌 🙏 ✨️ 👏 👌 ❤️. Brendan was shut out from Hollywood for a while, and Ke left for his own reasons. Sadly, some of the lives were lost too soon, such as River Phoenix and Corey Haim. The many who have lived on have really made a difference in the entertainment industry and have inspired us not to give up on our dreams. It's okay to change roles in life, and if you want something bad enough, it takes work, but you can reach your goals and be successful. Amen 🙏

    Ke does not have a sob story. He stared alongside Harrison Ford and was directed by Steven Spielberg as a kid. He went on to do the Goonies, Encino Man, and several other movies later. He went to USC film school and worked as an Assistant Director under several great Directors in Hong Kong for many years. He did not work at 7-11, he was busy working in the film industry for 25 years! He did not come out of nowhere like we are led to believe.
