US Navy Nuclear Submarine Bursts Through Polar Ice

- Have you ever seen a nuclear submarine burst through the polar ice? The US Navy performs exercises in the Arctic region called ICEX, where nuclear-powered submarines break through the ice to test the skills of the submarine’s crews and evaluate the performance of submarines in the most challenging conditions.
An average nuclear submarine can smash about 3 feet of ice, and some submarines can even go through around 9 feet of ice.
However, this is a risky exercise and it can severely damage a $1.59 billion submarine if the crew tries to surface through ice in the wrong location. It is very dangerous for sailors too because the chances of rescuing the crew of a sunken submarine alive in remote areas of the Arctic are quite low.
Fortunately, sensors enable the crew to find the right spots to surface and help research the Arctic in a safe way. - Наука та технологія
That must be an amazing site to see. Walking along as a submarine smashes through the ice near you.
I’d be less amazed more…smelly
id shit my self, just imagine your on your dogsled just minding your buisness and then 20 feet infront to your right a fucking submarine comes up
Bruh wqlking where
And you hear *target locked*
Then the nuclear submarine begins to say *"Self destruct in T-minus 10-"*
I haven't seen one, but it was happening every morning during my parents school trip.
Lol
Lmao

Imagine being a polar bear just camping a seal hole and instead of a seal, an entire nuclear sub comes out of the ice.

It would probably try to eat it.

Imagine being a politically incorrect! Oh wait that’s based. Also yeah I didn’t watch the fast and furious 9 movie but I remember in the trailer they go on ice and on a submarine too!
I was looking for that comment
"Have you ever seen a nuclear submarine burst through the Polar ice?"
Roman: Yes right after I was freezing my A** off! And through out my years I've taken down cars, planes, trains, tanks, and now after that submarine?! I ain't talking about that.
BOOM BOOM BOOM!
👋😝😜🤪😝🖐 🔥💥💥🔥
Also I even took an awesome selfie of it too! Wanna see?
"Have you ever seen a nuclear submarine burst through the polar ice?" That might be one of the dumbest questions ever asked. The only one who's ever witnessed this is a freakin walrus.
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
🤣🤣🤣
calm down George 🤣

“Dad why is there a giant fish under us-“
Can I keep this in pond
Thank you for the yellow circle pointing out the close-up of the subs conning tower breaking through ice. Wouldn't have been able to spot it otherwise
This is why I came to the comment section. I knew I wasn't the only one! 🤣
"sir, shall we conduct a series of extensive checks for knowing the structural integrity of the submarine?"
"Nah, just smash it through polar ice.. let's see"
@99 hell yea baby USA USA😂
Fun fact: if adhering to US Navy SubSafe guidelines, a submarine can theoretically (and has) hit an underwater mountain at flank speed and survive.
Damn 3ft of Ice is considered strong enough to hold loads up to 110 tons!! So this is super impressive!
Still water so water displacement and whatnot

For some reason when that happens I always hear the soviet union anthem I mean wth
It’s more common for American subs to do it also the Russian naval submarine power has lowered since the fall of the Soviet Union
The Soviets specialised in it, all their gear is at home in artic conditions, the large typhoon class missile submarine was designed to hide at enormous depths under the crackling ice shelf for up to 6 months, if the command to launch came in, it could crash through 12ft of solid ice to launch 200 nuclear warheads per vessel at targets in the west.
@@vFrostin Russia still has this type of stuff in the Arctic region by Siberia
@@John-hu9qg Yeah that's all well and good but a leadership that can't even keep a strict rota of maintenence on tanks, APCs, trucks etc (the fundamentals of ground warfare) then I doubt that they're maintaining their subs properly. They're no threat. As they've shown in Ukraine, the biggest threat from Russia is a bitter Soviet's irrational recklessness, not their perceived military prowess.
@@Nefariously_ignorant I beg to differ, for the first 10 days of the the Ukrainian conflict they threw in a proportion of older equipment and reserve troops to wear down the Ukrainians. They have 750,000 military personnel and 14,000 tanks, as well as the largest and most sophisticated nuclear arsenal on the planet with a considerable tactical nuclear advantage over NATO. Hence why NATO ran away, when ukraine wanted military assistance.
Yea this happens to me every morning when I wake
🤣🤣🤣
Thank you. The yellow arrow and circle was so helpful in identifying the submarine against the camouflage background of the Arctic
This is the real reason icebergs are breaking off
Someone that worked for my dad when he was a XO was clearing the ice off of the top thing (I forgot what it is called) and his right pinky finger was smashed between the ice and pole and he needed it to be amputated so now he has the bent pole and no right pinky finger.

Do you have brain damage? Its normal to ask a question like that
It’s a rhetorical question, numb nut.
Tf you talking about I see that shit all the time
I remember seeing a video where a U.S sub and a U.K sub surfaced in the Arctic only yards from each other it was a sight
His reason for going through the ice being, “it’s a training exercise, “ is hilarious.
Yeah I've seen three subs bursting through the ice at the same time
1987 2 yanks and a brit boat at the North Pole at the same time
@@fredsayer924 couldn't find that in Google but still interesting. My reference was the Umka-21 exercise by the Russian Northern Fleet btw.

Thanks for placing the yellow arrow and circle. I’d definitely have missed it otherwise
Imagine being stuck under the ice
Step bro im stuck and cold
@@randomplayer3467 wow your a little sus step sis
It happens. The ice underneath is usually jagged like stalactites. If a sub hits one of those wrong (get turned sideways), they might not be able to use the ballast tanks and be stuck. They have to find a flat place to surface. They have upward facing sonar for that.
I used to live near a 50 metre across isolated pond in the middle of England and used to see this each summer at least three times a month even when I wasn't looking.

That one third grade kids mind:
That arrow pointing out the submarine was really useful, I wouldn’t have seen it otherwise. Doh!
Environment groups say the icecaps are melting. Meanwhile the Navi, let's break to ice for a exercise
Imagine some guys doing some nuclear submarine exercises then some guy in a car with a missile on his back shouting "Family!!" is heading towards them.
Have I ever seen it? I mean, regularly when I go on walks..
Every winter I go out on ice and wait n wait n wait, one never surfaces so no i never seen a Sub surface from the ice.
I've seen it, in fast and furious 8
I have seen one apparently, it's chasing dominic toretto

So you're telling me the ending to fast and furious 8 was half legit? Hmm
I was involved in something much more exciting. A test launch of a Polaris missile off Daytona. While on board the sub. We opened missile tube lid at periscope depth, built up the pressure inside the tube and launched the missile In a hot bubble, when it flew out of the water the rockets ignited and it took off. Because there was so much pressure the sub rocked up and down!
Thanks for the yellow arrow and circle. Otherwise I wouldn't have noticed that submarine bursting through the ice.

If you are ever stuck in a thick ice call the Russian nuclear Icebreaker rescue squad.
