in the not too distant future the canucks will be coming up to free agency with nobody on an expiring deal and 13-14 schmill to go out and put the finishing touches on a contender. do what nashville just did.

And over the coming years that OEL buyout will hurt our cap but with the constant rising cap we should have no problem resigning boeser and in 2 years with a even higher cap when most of our offseason deals expire we will have enough cap space to resign them if we want and get more players quinn hughes will also need an extension soon but that rising cap will make sure we can get it done. This team… is COOKING 🔥

I would also blame the ownership for the mess that they had created (for rushing the team to retool rather than rebuild) as well even though Jim Benning should take the significant part as he was being too generous on trading and signing new agents (but did ok on renewing the contracts).

Look back over the last 25 years. Take note of how many top ten first, second and third round picks they have had since 1999. Now consider how many of those seasons they finished in the bottom eight of the league

To put the silver garlands to line to the OEL cloud is at least we got Conner Garland out of it. Rogers Cenre would be a lot less decorated without him on the roster, as he's grown into his contract and is 1/2 of the Life Line duo that made such a huge difference. Maybe that disastrous OEL deal had to happen to bring Garland to Vancouver so the Life Line could happen and Dakota Joshua could get his sneak peak into how good Dakota Joshua could be.

Kudos indeed to the management group. Lot of juggling. Lots of pieces to prioritize. But they did it. They re-signed the big guns. They got good guys to sign discount deals. They've made decent looking trades, picked up good people and even drafted damn fine blue chips in Lekkerimäki, Willander and Pettersson. All demonstrations they've been working very hard indeed! Also RIP CapFriendly!

This management has done a great job, no doubt about it. They have brought in competent replacements this offseason for the over priced players they lost. Sadly the fact that they signed Petey to a crazy big contract it could be a deal breaker. If Petey doesn't come in healthy and learn how to look after himself like Captain Quinn this team is not going to have a chance. Everything is hinging on Petey and Demko's health. Silovs hasn't progressed to be a number one goal tender yet, his skill level is not there yet. An 82 game NHL schedule will expose his weakness. Some players like Demko and Silovs have the ability to elevate their game in really high stake games to unbelievable levels and it makes them look better than they are. A healthy Petey is a 130 point player and a super star, an unhealthy Petey is team killer and frankly does nothing for this team. We will see.

It’s almost like they looked at the salary cap, then the contracts, then said “hey maybe we should budget our spending around what a player should make based on their role” and then tried to add value contracts for role players while using the remaining cap space to add depth to the roster.
They took a failed, uncommitted “rebuild” and turned it into a competitive team in 2 seasons.

The work the new management has put in contrasts sharply with fumblings of the Benning era. Nobody misses that boot-black, drippy-dyed hair, or his bumbly interviews, never mind the constant double downs. Those days are gone. There's a new Jim in town and this is new Jim's time.

Retarding the inevitable rebuild is not a fix.
It’s not that I don’t think they are working hard and creatively, I just don’t like the long term return on my emotional investment.
    Trading away Horvat was dumb.
Miller 1C, Horvat 2C would have been fine and a heavier 2Way
Petterson was and still is the trade to make.
Hronek is not the right partner he needs an Eckholm type, one who focuses on Defense while supporting the attack.
Hronek likes to drive as much as Hughes
    This roster has
    3 top 6 forwards
    6-40-8 and that’s about it…
DeBrusk is nice middle 6 add but he’s not a first liner
    2 top 4 D
D got bigger but slower & dumber
Building through free agency and trading away prospects and picks on rentals they can’t keep when the prospect pool is already shallow is not smart it’s basically Jimbo #2
I Like Tocchet, but Petterson is 10 ply soft between the ears. Hughes still doesn’t have the right partner, he keeps getting pummeled in the corners and Hronek is quite content not rushing over there to take the hit instead.
What does a Canucks PP2 even look like!? My
Canucks needed a scoring top 6 winger so they traded for a top 6 centre in Lindholm…
So you give a 1st round pick, Kuzy and 2 prospects one a RD for basically a return of DeBrusk & Hinen when you could have signed them for free…
Poor asset management, they aren’t building a Boston 2010’s-2020’a or Detroit of late 90’s to 2010’s
This a win now window when they have only shown last year is that they can dominate a really weak division.
Sharks, Ducks, Flames, Kraken all in bottom 10 of 32 Edmonton’s slow start, Vegas limping all year, LA’s PLD gamble blew up in their face,
This could be a more competitive division next year and certainly the Conference as well
Hawks, Preds, Ducks, Kraken, should all improve, Edmonton shouldn’t stumble out of the gate they got better and faster, Vegas lost a couple of pieces but they will compete.
Canucks might have a harder time in the west next season.
I don’t think they got better maybe deeper but not better.

    • @chad4801
      @chad4801 Місяць тому

I agree with some of what your saying but not all of your stuff. Canucks were doing great before they traded for Z and lindholm. Horvat needed to be traded with his age and they needed to do something big in that locker room. Trading him made it Quinns team. Hronek shouldn't be with hughes at all. Hronek should be the 2nd pair puck mover with soucy - hughes definitely needs a tanev like guy with more size probably. With petey your right with how soft he is and if he doesn't turn his crap around next year he still can be traded. He has no protection next year. If he can't prove that he can drive his line and put up 5on 5 points then they could move on from him. Hard to think they trade him after the big signing but it's fully possible.
I think your right about the defence for sure but they do have the best defensive staff you could ask for working with them so we could be suprised.
From opening season this past year to this next one coming up the roster has 100 percent got better. Z and lindholm came later on.
