- You loved our video about five of the best Springbok flyhalves, so here is one about ten of the greatest flankers! There is always a debate going on about the best player in each position and people's opinions vary widely!
PLEASE NOTE THESE ARE JUST 10 OF THE GREATEST FLANKERS, NOT WHAT WE CONSIDER THE 10 BEST OF ALL TIME. THAT IS ANOTHER VIDEO!

Kwagga was the single most valuable and effective player during the vital periods the Boks needed towards the end of the last 3 WC matches.His impact off the bench was immense.

Brussow se impak op die spel was so groot dat die IRB die reels verander het om hom te neutraliseer
Our players seem to be at the fore front of IRB making rule changes. They wanted to change a drop kick from 3 points down to 2 because Naas was slotting them from left to right. Then we were boycotted and it went away.

Nice tries, but it seems that the guys organising in the ovens, like Jan Boland Coetzee, aren't in the acquisition. We had such a lot of them though.
Brussow was world class at just one thing. Loved his heart, but in the modern game, especially at Test level, you need your loonies to be super dynamic.
Agree with all those names . Venter and Smith should be further up the list
Rassie Erasmus, Danie Rossouw, Willem Alberts, Francois Louw, Siya Kolisi, Pieter Steph du Toit were/are all great flankers but my no.1 on the above video would be Schalk Burger, he was an all rounder in turning over ball, tackling, hitting rucks and carrying up the ball.
I remember him getting dominated far too often.. I actually think he was overrated. PSDT is the greatest SA Flank of all time
Not sure why Jan Ellis and Rob Louw are NOT higher - I remember Jan Ellis against the Lions and the All Blacks - he terrorised loose ball, just a 80 min machine as if someone flipped the switch on and for Rob Louw - he would be up there with the likes of Jean Pierre Rives, Graham Mourie and Ray Price!
Those would be my top 2 - from a kiwi!

@@MrMattiepan on his way to become Springbok captain under Heineke, but that horrible Achilles tendon injurie happened and he was out for 3 years ,making way for Jean Di Villiers to captain SA
PSdT is a machine. Will compare favourably here. Reminds me of Juan Smith.
Burger was also huge on defense. No regard for his own body.
Burger used to get handed off by players too often
When psdt is retired he will without any doubt be in the top three list of our best flankers ever,world rugby player of the year, what a phenomenal player, legend! But choosing 10 of our best flankers seems to be a very hard task as we have been blessed by many a talent!
I'm a die hard Freestate supporter . Juan Smith and Andre Venter are my two best Freestate players of all time
On my list of greatest nr 7s of all time it is
1 PSDT
2 Andre Venter ,Juan Smith
3 Danie Rossow
i think Brussow stays the best,as someone commented here that his way of playing made the IRB to change the rules of the game when going into a ruck,,

Juan Smith was the original PSDT. Very under rated. He just went about his business and never complained

He was still better than anyone on this list...and then theres P.S Du Toit and Dwayne Vermeleun missing...it is true tho...picking bok flankers is the hardest job...we quite possibly have best quality flankers on the planet

Ons gaan eers die beste losskakels doen. Seker Maandag as alles uitwerk
Ek weet die reëls is nou baie anders. Moet net nie vergeet van die ouens wat nie vir "glory" gespeel het nie (soos bv Jannie De Beer) nie. (Al het hy amper die '99 semi teen OZ met sy drops gewen nie. Naas, al laaik ek hom nie as 'n persoon nie) gaan moeilik ge-"beat" word. Dink net aan die 2de toets teen Ierland voor die '81 'meelbom' toer in NZ
If you wanted a man perfect for the position of flanker it would be (hands down) - Theuns Stoffberg. It would have been good to see him in the modern era.
manymany more great flanks and definately wouldnt know in what order to put them....for me the ones that stood out the most would be Juan Smit, Brussau, Kwagga Smit, Rassie, Venter...but huge accolades to the ones mentioned and not mentioned....

Big emissions from this list like e.g. Francois Louw. Having Brussouw as one of the greatest, sure.... He struggled to make the starting 15. Nice to see him in a highlights package, but is full games he was not all that great. But, tis is just a list and not a true ranking of the best.
Exactly, it is isn't a list of the best, it is a list of some of fhe greatest. As with the flyhalves, we are working on a list of the BEST flankers, and we will do that with all positions

oh yes 100000 % ,his way of playing made the WRB change the rules of the game to prevent a player going over the ball, but still stays a shame of them doing it,

Heinrich Brussouw deserved a Coach better than HMeyer to appreciate his value over bigger men. Won the Lions series winning pens, embarrassed McCaw in NZ, almost took Free State to a Lions test win
Brussow was so good on the loose that WRB changed the rules to prevent him from making other players look like kindergarten kids,what a shame for them doing it,it killed the game after that, i still think he was the best BOK flanker ever

How can you leave out the best ever Springbok Captain (before Kolisi) and flanker Francois Pienaar?
Pienaar was a great captain but he wasn’t one of our best flanks ever (not even close)

It was Burger Geldenhuys who punched the Cavalier captain Andy Dalton from behind in a match against Northern Transvaal. Geldenhuys, a sure choice for the test series, was replaced by Transvaal's Wahl Bartmann as a result of his misdemeanor.
