The Gift of Walking

  • Kaiser Permanente Chairman and CEO George C. Halvorson discusses the gift of walking. Discover how walking 30 minutes a day, five days a week can help reduce the rate of diabetes, strokes, heart disease, hypertension and more. The benefits of walking are good for all, and can also help combat breast and prostate cancer. Beyond the physical benefits, walking can have a major positive impact on depression by creating positive neurochemicals.
And you don't have to be a regular at the gym to get the benefits. You can fit walking into your daily routine and experience the benefits with shorter walks throughout the day. The benefits are multiple--and it's easy and free to do. Walking is our gift. Walking is our strength. Walking makes us strong. So let's walk.

I am 75. Two years ago I was bedbound in a care home for end of life care (!) Medical support was poor, so I did my own thing. Did a lot of research and started an exercise regime. Learned to walk again and walked about 2 miles a day in the corridors. Net result I came home after six months. Now I walk regularly about 4 miles every day in the country (even during covid-19). About 30 miles a week.
Result blood pressure 106/67 rest heart rate 55 bpm BMI 23 blood oxygen (SpO2) 96-99%. And even the horses in the fields I cross recognise me and come to say hello!

Walking has been my daily pill for the last 2 months. I cant wait to go out and walk every single day at 5 pm in the cool of the day. It's as if i grind away all the toxins in my body as well as negative thoughts. Pity that I discovered it so late at age 61. Yet, it's never too late.

Walking is a wonder drug and it's the best thing for you and is free to do. I walk between 3-4 times a day half hour to an hour each depending on the weather. I also mall walk when it's too hot out or too cold. I'm telling you it works. I sleep better now too. NO more drugs for me.

I agree. I just recently started "walking to work". I park on the 4th floor of the garage at work. Rather than taking the elevator I walk all the way around, ramp by ramp. Then I do a quick spin around the building. It takes about 15 minutes. At the end of the day...to get to my car, I walk up and around the garage. It not only counts as steps/time, but also stair climbing. I had to come to the realization that I really don't like to exercise; but I LOVE walking. Walk on people! Walk on!

I started walking after a foot operation 6 months ago. I also decided not to eat any processed food nor any added sugar nor white flour nor any diet products, just real food. Six months later, I walk an average 15000 steps a day, I have lost 30 kg weight (I was obese, I'm not even overweight now) , I eat far more than I used too (for years I was fat and hungry, and feeling guilty every time I ate more than 1500 calories a day). Best of all, I feel ten years younger than a year ago and I have more energy for my everyday life: my job and running a family with two adolescent girls !!!

I remember reading, some time ago, that if you want to lose weight and feel better, park your car about a mile from your work place. If you haven't been doing a lot of walking, my suggestion is that you park the car just a few blocks from your work place and every week, or less, increase that distance. If you work from home, a break of 15 minutes in the morning and another one in the afternoon will help you with your concentration as you work. I am not a doctor not any sort of therapist. I make these suggestions based on what I have read and done in my own life. Always talk with your doctor before starting any new exercise.
President Truman used to walk every morning and his secret service detail had a difficult time keeping up with him at first.

I just started walking an hour per day a couple weeks ago and I think my motivation and focus have improved. I don't include whether or not I walk the dogs, that's just extra walking, which just increases the benefit (icing on the cake). I'm doing it to lose visceral fat actually, since it's the most effort-efficient way burn fat instead of sugars, and additionally reduces cortisol, rather than increasing it like some more strenuous exercises. Also reduces risk of injury. Getting in an hour per day is flexible, I can grab 15 minutes before work, 15 minutes during lunch break, and 30 minutes after dinner, or any other combination that fits my schedule any particular day. If I accidentally overeat on dinner then I get at least an hour before going to bed which improves sleep. I plan to start adding in weight training AFTER I have lost the fat.

I agree: he's a great presenter. I recently read several meta-analysis on walking that showed linear improvements for both health and longevity maxing out at about 7,500 steps per day. I aim for 7,500 steps every day. It takes me just over an hour. It makes a stunning difference in my overall sense of well-being. I also sleep much better. When I wake up, my stomach is always flat, and I feel really lean. Luckily, I live on a wooded lot where we made a walking path. I can't wait to drink my coffee each morning and head out. Even bad weather doesn't overwhelm my excitement.

Walking is great for those that have anxiety and depression , walking releases the feel good endorphins like serotonin and dopamine and lowers the bad chemicals like cortisol and adrenaline , 30 mins a day (that's it) but must be a brisk walk not a lazy dog walk for 30 mins

Reminds me of an interview of a celebrity. " God gave you wings to fly, why do you want walk?" When we can do more, why stop at walking. Now, i am injured so i opt for walking. When you can run, you should run not just walk.
