Great review! I’ve considered the Nomad Lane Bento Bag before but I only travel once or twice per year and couldn’t justify the expense. This looks like a very good and affordable alternative.
After watching your review, I put this bag in my Amazon cart to think about because I am not traveling until Sepember. A couple of days ago the black version went on sale half off. Snapped that puppy up for 20 bucks. It came today. I think its going to work out great.

It seems like one nice thing about the fabric not being as thick as the other bag is that it would weigh less. That is always a plus for me as I get older. Thank you for this excellent review.
Hi @pamelachappell1089, that is very true. You always want to strike up a balance between the fabric being lighter (who needs extra weight?) and being durable. This bag's fabric seems very durable as did the zipper, which is a huge plus! Glad you found the video informative! Happy travels! ✈✈

I’m definitely curious about those aisle seats too. My current bag is very structured and a roller (with all my joint problems I didn’t want a bag I would have to carry, though now I’ve started using wheelchair support which helps tremendously). My bag is basically a mini suitcase in personal item size proportions and does not fit under the American aisle seat . So annoying!! This one has done me well for a decade, and only recently started to show its age, so I got my money’s worth and could use it for other things. A bag like this could store inside it or luggage. My new suitcase has a “personal item” that matches but since it doesn’t fit my iPad Pro (it’s the size of a laptop) I’m like lol no. Great if I’m not flying but if I’m flying? I need my personal item to fit my kindle and iPad, sorry cute little bag. 😂
Hi @@LadyOzma. I have heard that there are issues on the American aisle seat due to the electrical boxes under the seat (I personally try to avoid AA due to some lousy experiences). That being said, it is very difficult to find a rolling piece of luggage that will both fit under the seat and get and get a small computer in it. I am always looking and I think I have found a few and I will be reviewing those, so stay tuned! 🤣
@perriespassport it’s definitely tight in there. I’ve seen some backpacks go in there but I know my thing does not fit at all. And it meets the American personal item measurements so ugh. I have got to travel with my tech so it’s definitely frustrating.

While the front pocket does stick out about a quarter of an inch, if If you don't stuff the bag, because the material has give, it will fit into the drop box. at both Spirit and Frontier, but just avoided overpackin. Frontier's drop box is a bit smaller than Spirit's, even though they say they take the same size bags. Hope this helps! 😀😀✈✈
This looks great!! Have to check the size...for international! 2 if these would make for pretty easy travel...I still have a big thing made of "space" fabric that hasn't worn out...if this bag is the same material...no worries! WAY back when I used to use a very small luggage trolley...wonder if they would fly today? They fold a bit big unfortunately height wise but it is a great thing!
Hi secetariatgirl4249, If you are using this as a personal item, check the carrier. I was shocked to find that BA's personal item was a lot smaller than AA, which is their companion airline. This bag would do for AA but not BA. Hope that helps! ✈✈
When I flew overseas on Air France and KLM, the Nomad Lane bento bag was acceptable as a carry-on, but too large to qualify as a personal item. I really like the bento bag though. Its organization is epic.
Hi @@kitkat5339 (btw, that's my daughter's nickname) That is the same issue with BA The size is basically 16X9X6 and it's that 6 that makes it really tough. I have found that if I paid for a carry-on, they seem to look the other way for the personal item. But if you are traveling within Europe with only a personal item, they are very careful to check your size, although the personal item size is bigger.
@@PerriesPassport yes, that's a huge issue...I have a list of luggage sizes by airline but things change...nothing is written in stone...I have a soft side circa the 90's with the handle OUTSIDE the bag!... So no ridges, just flat on the bottom. Not clamshell opening but small but it might be easiest just to use it for my carry on and get a personal item bag that works. At least I know the size will work for a carryon everywhere...
so which bag did you get? the bento 3 does not have a pass through or a water bottle holder so really this better compares with the bento 4 ( almost $300!.)

I sure can. It's 2.5lbs, which is a big plus if you are going to use this as a personal item because you will be carrying it and you don't need the extra weight on your shoulder. Have a great time in Australia and New Zealand!
You packed your husband 7 shirts and no pants except lounge pants??? I think that was an error. How about the boxers in with the computer as padding since they're mostly flat. Take out one polo and add a pair of black day/night pants and a pair of jeans or shorts???
As a former road warrior for 30 years, I've probably owned two dozen personal item bags (previously known as laptop bags). They all had their shortcomings until I purchased the Nomad Lane Bento Bag (v2 or v3). You know it's a good design when a dozen different vendors sell look-alike bags for a fraction of the cost. However, the knockoffs always come up short (somewhere). With the Bento Bag you can access the 3-1-1 liquids pouch without opening any of the main compartments. Your laptop is also accessible by partially unzipping the center compartment. The reason it costs $200 is because the bag retains its structure, and also due to the materials, the handle, and the YKK zippers. The Bento Bag should easily last 10+ years with frequent use. But I agree the price is hard to justify for someone traveling 1 or 2 times a year.
Hi @DaveM-FFB. I had to laugh when you said that 30 years ago these bags were considered laptop bags because I remember using them, that way. For me, the problem with the Bento Bag, was that it was so rigid, which made it hard to squeak it by one of those bag drops where they measure the size, and most people these days are looking for that, and a bag that is half way decent, and after testing so many of them, I felt that this one could kind of fit the bill.
@PerriesPassport Good point. The Bento is right at the maximum personal item size for most airlines. If you're asked to put it in the sizer, it could be tight, or it might not fit if it's over-packed. Thus far, I haven't been asked. I don't fly Spirit or Frontier. And Southwest hasn't asked me to put the Bento in the sizer. Also, I don't overfill the front outside pocket. That could cause it to not fit.
Nomad Lane’s version 4 bag is nothing like the bag you compared the Bagsmart bag. It has a zippered water bottle on the side, phone pocket, two zippers on upper corners and comes with the Tech bag and the TSA bag for quick access. I’d love to see you review the Namad lane V4 which also has real leather handles. I think you will be very surprised how different they are from the cheaper Amazon version.
Hi @cdewey5115 I didn't love the V3 for the money, but I am willing to review the V4 since I've heard good things about the bag. Obviously, a bag that costs a $38 dollar bag is not going to have the quality that a $300 bag, but I own the Bagsmart bag and it's held up amazingly well. But people who own the Bento are very passionate about the bag and that is says something about the bag, for sure. It's worth a second look!
I have been wanting the Bento Bag, but just can't pull the trigger since I do not travel more than 2-3 times a year. I also recently watched your Take Off video. I think my next trip will be two regular carry ons, the TakeOff and this. Thanks, great video!

Water bottle pockets always add value, in my eyes. I agree with an earlier poster that thinner fabric means the bag can weigh less, *and* is more likely to flex when checking at the sizer.
Hi @tjaywong I have used it on United without any issues. That being said, if you get a picky agent, there might be an issue, although the Bagsmart bag is narrower than required.
@@PerriesPassport On Amazon the messurement was 18x7x11.5. United is getting strict. They want their personal item to be 17x9x10. And they don’t want us to “manipulate” the bag. We borrowed a friends Bento bag and they made me measure the bag because they thought it was too big. Luckily it fit. But my husband’s personal bag didn’t. It was 18x9x11. He was able to smoosh it down, but they said it was too big and asked to check it in. I still might get the Amazon bag for Southwest. It definitely fits for their personal size item.

Although this bag (at 18x12x8) is bigger than United's teeny-tiny PI requirements (17x10x9"), it is perfect for American Airlines (18x14x8), which i also fly. AND the major reason I'm commenting, is that Amazon currently has the bag on sale for $ 19.49!!!
Hi @juliemcculloch6328 I'm afraid I would have to disagree with you. The measurements of the bag is 18X*X8X12 My husband has used that bag on Jetblue, Delta, Spirit and AA with no problems. The bag has enough flexibility that it easily fits into the bag sizers, and he was only asked once to have it checked and he was fine.That being said, one should always check what counts as a personal time size different airlines have different sizes.
Unfortunately, it won’t work for Southwest Airlines. Their personal item bag allowance is less than 17”. They pack you in like sardines. I currently use a small roller bag which fits under the seat. You can’t access anything on your flight so after going through security, I put on a crossbody bag under my coat. It gives me access to my phone, a book, snack, Kleenex, and hard candy. This fall I have booked a flight to visit my daughter. I will be staying 1 week and will see if I can pack everything in a carryon and personal item bag.

but it doesn't have that handy thing on the "back" that lets you slide it over the handle of a carryon suitcase. That's everything when pulling things thru a big airport so you don't have to sling it over your shoulder or carry it with your hand.
Hi @modestohornets That is true. It doesn't have a troll pass through, but that is true of a lot of duffel bags, too. There is a thing you can buy from Amazon that acts as a troll pass through, if you really like the bag.
