- *July 2024 Update* In 2020, USPA played a key role in saving Dillingham (Kawaihāpai) Airfield in Hawaii from closure with the help of USPA’s Airport Access Defense Fund and the efforts of member Ben Devine. Now, we’re excited to announce that Dillingham has secured a 50-year lease with the state of Hawaii and the U.S. Army, signed by Governor Josh Green! This lease guarantees the airfield's future, supporting local businesses and tourism while providing stability for the North Shore community of Oahu. Plans include infrastructure improvements and expanded use, ensuring it remains a vibrant aviation hub. Thank you to everyone who supported this effort. USPA remains dedicated to supporting all Group Member drop zones and ensuring safe flights for skydivers everywhere! Members can continue to support airfields like Dillingham by donating to the Airport Access Defense Fund: www.uspa.org/donate-online
Please Help Us Save Skydiving in Hawaii. Visit savedillinghamairfield.org/. Kawaihapai Airport, the only public airport on the northern half of Oahu, is under threat of permanent closure. More commonly known as Dillingham Airfield, it is the home of skydiving, glider operations, hang gliding tours, flight training, and the Civil Air Patrol.

How the United States Parachute Association is Helping
At USPA, we’re here to ensure continued rightful access to this incredible sport we all love, while supporting safe skydiving and all those who enjoy it. In late February, USPA sent a video team to gather the stories from those who would lose everything with the closure of the airfield. Skydivers know that we who share the air are family and more than anything, that feeling and connection are going to be what saves that airfield.
Hawaii’s Department of Transportation (HDOT) currently manages the airfield and leases the land from the military. In February 2020, HDOT gave notice that it would be terminating its lease with the military effective June 30, 2020. With the efforts of USPA and others, HDOT subsequently announced postponing the lease termination to June 30, 2021. If the airfield were to close, there would no longer be a place for skydiving and other air sports on the entire island of Oahu. This would be truly devastating to the many businesses and more than 130 people who work at Dillingham Airfield and call it home.

Most beautiful dropzone in the world!
Did a tandem jump there over 15 years ago. One of the best experiences of my life. My son wants to try when he's old enough and there's no where else
I would stop at snack shack across from the school to have breakfast to go, and hitch a ride to the DZ. Beautiful visual in freefall.
One of the best views in skydiving! Please help by sharing the story and contacting legislators through savedillinghamairfield.org/. Thanks, Dan!
SOO many insanely phenomenal views... I say every skydiver should jump there at least once if at all possible.
Only via a tandem though
😧😧😧😧 nothing can replace the spirit of adventure.

Cool nice édit :) beautiful vidéo !!
I hope this story will help to keep this amazing place to stay open!!! I allays wanted to visit Hawaii and jump there, and I hope I will have this chance in nearest future!!!
Thank dima! We hope you will have this chance as well.
How can the public help to stop this ? I don't live in Hawaii. How can USPA members help? Is USPA or AOPA or EAA doing anything about this? This can't happen !
This is one of the best places in the world to learn to fly sailplanes (gliders) because of the very close access to continuous ridge lift right beside the airfield as they said in the video. You can fly all day focusing on improving your skills as a pilot and not be so concerned with losing altitude and having to go back to land. The 9000' runway also provides plenty of room for the glider flying, planes and skydiving to stay out of each others' way. You just CAN"T close this flying paradise down...!!
@Panther105, we agree! You can help out by sharing the story and contacting legislators through savedillinghamairfield.org/. Blue skies 🪂

So sorry to hear that. Tell the DOT that I had one of my most memorable experiences of my life when I did my first skydive at Dilingham Airfield. It’s outrageous that they are not giving you more room to negotiate some kind of compromise. I still have the photo of my just on my piano here in Japan. Many thanks to Rick Cane ( both looking much younger ! haha! Aloha! ). Anyway, I can only hope that common sense will prevail and these pen pushers come to realize the ramifications of their unacceptable proposal. Please, please fight for your right. I am looking forward to jumping with you all again when I go to Hawaii next. Good luck to you, your family, community and beautiful Dillingham. Aloha.
