This was so timely. I have been thinking that carex might solve a number of design and/or ecological problems I have. I have extensive areas to deal with and have been pulling and mulching over the rampant garlic mustard while I look for desirable plants that could shade it out. The property was somewhat neglected before I bought it and the invasive weed seed bank is huge. Your tapestries of carex are such a beautiful inspiration. My first career was as a scholar of 19th century French landscape painting -- it is great to see the images again through your eyes. Thanks again for taking the time to make your videos.
Two things: 1. Fascinating info on sefge roots and drawing up moisture for use of other plants. 2. I respect you for taking the clients' financial needs into consideration.
This is my very first time to see one of your videos, and WOW absolutely LOVED it. What a great teacher you are! Can’t wait to see what else you have to offer. Thank you!
Another great video! You gave me a lot of ideas for using sedges. We have a large area of sedges in our woodland edge, not planted by us. It just came up, I have not identified it yet. This year I might try some new sedges in the strip by the sidewalk. Mowing there is a joke, because it's too dry and shady next to a large maple tree. Love Cantigny Park, we go there on a regular basis. I will look for the sedge planting next time.
Very intimate explanation on how to create a matrix with clear explanation of the different carex characteristics and the method how to intermingling. I love the American generation of naturalistic landscape architects also because of they attention to functional layer. Thanks a lot.
That’s so funny about the plants rolling down the hill. I have the same issue with a hillside when I’m planting on it. I’ve become part mountain goat going up and down-alway sideways. I like the sedge idea, this could solve a. hill planting problem.
Dear Roy, thank you so very much for each video you have done! Your instructions are so useful and wonderful! Every video is so special! Would you consider a program about mixing sedges and grasses? And after watching the 4 episodes about putting perennials together, questions arose; how do you think when putting together perennials, sedges and grasses. When do you separate plant groups(block planting) and when/how do you mix grasses/sedges "sprinkling" between perennials. How are you thinking about when planning those different kinds of plantings? Thank you very, very much!
So many questions, by shading out weeds, wouldnt this also shade out any native seeds you dispersed within your sedge matrix? Do sedges play nicely with fruiting plants and vegetables?
Hello Roy! I love sedges and your videos, so thank you! What sedge could you recommend for under a red maple? It’s probably around 25’ tall but really hasn’t grown very wide, maybe 12-15’. It’s limbed up to around 7-8’ where I can walk under it but it causes a lot of sunlight. So I just have a large 20’ wide mulch ring that I would love to use sedges instead of wood mulch. Any ideas sir?
Thanks, Roy, for another great video. I’ve been trying to find a grass to plant in mass under my crabapple tree. I think the sedges would work wonderfully. Do you grow yours from seed?
Wonderful presentation. How do the Carex on the sidewalk hold up against dog urine and the beating sidewalk tree wells often take? Any particular plant you would recommend for zone 7b in an urban setting?
I’ve found that mondo grass although not a sedge handles pavement heat really well and dog utube. I have a neighbor that lets his bulldog pee there often. It’s not killed or discolored this grass. It’s right in the intersection of two sideways meeting . Truly amazing how it holds up.
Thanks for the video Roy, love it. I planted about 400 Carex albicans plugs last year and they trippled in size the first growing season. Such a durable sedge, and they're planted under/near silver maples haha. I know C. shortiana is found in moist mesic environments in my home county - is it adaptable to dry conditions?
Where would you suggest home gardeners can get sedges? I’m in Florida 9b and I rarely see a carex (or grasses) in garden centers. I’ve done a lot from seed but it would be nice to have a source. Thanks!

welcome and thanks for watching!
I absolutely agree!!! Same feeling here!
Using our schools as models of natural communities by "losing the lawn" is helping to reach all generations. Thanks Roy!
What an awesome video. I just took a Carex class and thankfully this video was pushed to my UA-cam feed. So helpful for me! Thank you!
I’m obsessed with Carex and will definitely continue to add them. Thanks for giving more education and awareness to their many functions!

Another valuable lesson. Loved the kids, school, etc. Off to check out sedges for my neighborhood😊
Roy, you know my love for sedges (thanks to you), and I'm thrilled you did a deeper dive on them! Time for more....
Hi Roy, in a future video can you explain what you mean by stretching the planting. Is it repeating the blocks? Thanks!

Love the videos on carex as there are so many to learn about! Could we talk about ones that can grow at the bases of maples soon? I’m struggling bad!

Do sedges play nicely with fruiting plants and vegetables?
No because they've lived and evolved together. And yes, sedges are great with fruits and vegetables.
@@RoyDiblik thank you for the reply! I've already been adding more sedges to my mixes

Get sedges native to your region from a local native plant supplier, then you don't need to even consider zones

Thanks Roy! Enjoyed this discussion. I keep seeing Carex morrowii ‘Ice Dance’ in various shade gardens. What are your thoughts on it?

Roy do you have any links to the research on the ecological benefits of Carex as a garden plant?
