Hey there!
So you've bought your first kalimba. Now what do you do? How do you play the kalimba - actually?
Well, basically most kalimbas we know in the west have been set up with a Western tuning; From C - C.
However, as the notes go up, this alternates:
Left
Right
Left
Right
This can be confusing at first, as most of us are more used to a "piano layout": 1, 2, 3, 4.
Not 1, 3, 2, 4. 😩
So where do we you actually START?
Well, here's a cool tip! 🙌🎶
👉 Because this scale layout is a little unfamilliar, the first best step is to GET MORE FAMILIAR. Pluck the tines, listen to the sound they make, hold your kalimba, turn it around and look it all over, try to make ugly sounds, try to make nice sounds.
What happens if you make sound upside down?
Can you make sound with one hand?
Can you put it on the table and pluck it with your fingers, like a piano?
Can you make sound with your toes?
Literally, before you start PLAYING MUSIC, just go for getting more and more familiar! Your kalimba will "grow on you," and suddenly you'll start to recognize sounds that sound good, and what tines sound like what.
