Hi! I've got a question... I tuned my Kalimba correctly but the 3 highest notes are too tight to the wood so there is no sound coming out if I play the tile. What can I do to loose them a little bit up? It also seems like the tiles are too short...
Hey there! I understand the problem you are having as I have had it on my Kalimbas sometimes as well. Unfortunately, if the tile is too short then I am not too sure how to enhance its sound quality. Maybe try moving the tiles side to side a bit to try and loosen them up? Good luck!
Hi, I personally don't recommend move tins side to side. Although it can be okay to move very occasionally and slightly when it is needed but i do not recommend move it often and vigorously as the wood might be compressed and tin might edge into the wood (especially when the side of tin is not finished properly and is sharp). That might cause other problems such as making buzz noise or losing sustain of the sound. I would recommend to check if your play technique is good first. Try not to touch the body with your palm which can kill the vibration sometimes. Try use nail but not finger part. Try not to hold tins too long but make it short contact when you play. change your hand position to hold the body. sometimes edge of tins are too sharp and it may prevent sliding your nail or finger smoothly (HIGHLY NOT recommended but I used a finest sand paper and sanded a little. This might rip the top coat off and may cause rust which will kill the sound). There might be some more tips but I personally think high notes are generally and more likely have this issue REGARDLESS if the tension (or the pressure) of tin is tight or loose. I believe it is a relation to the vibration (or the frequency). As time passes by using it, it may be resolved by itself but I personally not recommend to modify it by forcing it to move or bend the tins unless you are very familiar with the instrument. However it is also true that moving tins side to side can fix problem and I, to be honest, did it to my top notes (highest 3) by moving it to the outside. I needed to move whole tins to adjust equality of the width between tins to make sliding (glinding) play smooth which of course caused buzzing problems (especially on the lower notes). Lower notes tends to have buzzing issue when you move tins so be very careful. Overtime, as you play, it is inevitable to have some issues of course so I would suggest not too worry about it too much and try not to modify (By the way, I jiggled my kalimba so many times and took me forever to fix problems). I will never ever absolutely not recommended but swapping tins sometimes fix the problems but you need to know how to remove and insert tins correctly. Also each tins has different length so it will cause problem with sliding technique when you do that. I mentioned the possible problems but you still can jiggle and have fun with your Kalimb (I have done it with my first Kalimba, it was very stressful when Kalimba doesn't sound like original after I have done some modification). I also recommended to tune every notes perfectly using apps. Perfect as in perfect by 1 heltz. Resonation is also the key to have good frequency. If you come up with some issues, I will be happy to share my experience so please check my youtube channel (it is this account) and you may be able to leave your comment or DM me! At the end, do not worry too much but enjoy your Kalimba!
I want a lo-fi song using a Kalimba, a harp, a ukulele, a cello, a xylophone, and a keyboard. And in the same album another song written with a kazoo, an otametone, a didgeridoo, and bagpipes.
Please can you make a video about how to choose a good calimba? I am wary about anything on Amazon or Wish. Where could I get a quality calimba for as cheap as possible?
That sounds like a video I could do. In the meantime, don't completely rule out Amazon as an option. I actually bought my first Kalimba from there. Just make sure you are purchasing a reputable brand, and one that has good reviews online. Hope this was helpful :)
So I bought a kalimba and a small desk, I unpacked both at the same time, thought the hammer definitely came with the desk (since I had to set it up). Played this video later that day, then it all made sense lol
so, its great way to practice and at least memorize songs when you get kalimba one day. i use app called Real Kalimba on phone and i memorized few songs and can play them at like 0.75 speed. im gonna buy kalimba in summer and its better than not having previous experience at all. plus you hold phone and play with thumbs just like real kalimba, so its great simulation
When playing kalimba, should I memorize the placement of the keys (to play the kalimba while looking at the tabs/notes at all times) or should I memorize the tabs/notes for different songs instead (to look at the kalimba while playing without going back and forth to the tab/notes)? I've been playing the kalimba while looking at both the keys and tabs/notes at the same time, and it's a bit difficult to play smoothly.
I just got my kalimba today and I'm here to tell you that plucking the tines just right is a lot trickier than I thought. If you've been using a kalimba app to learn and dip your toes in, wonderful! But you are definitely in for a surprise.

Hey there! Usually, there will not be any sharps or flats in a 17-key Kalimba since it will most likely be tuned to C Major, but you can technically tune the Kalimba to a different key if you'd like, which would therefore give you sharps and flats :)
VERY helpful, YOU made it look so easy breezy, though it's not! Lol! Thx for taking the time showing us peeps the "how's, Etc"; much appreciated it in full!☺❤
Hello! I've just received my Kalimba today and I tried to tune the tines and used three different apps to do so. I have a problem there 😅 two or three tines aren't recognized at all by the apps or they are recognized as a completely different tone. Apparently they are so high or low pitched that they can't be recognized anymore or maybe it was a mistake in production??? Do You have any advices for a solution? Thank You very much in advance! I tried already to tune them so it might get better but it sounded worse actually 😕🤔 they are the outer tines -A-C-D. Has someone similar problems like me?
that’s happening with me! the outermost tines are always the hardest to tune though, since they’re so high, so i think it’s just normal and we have to suck it up and wing it, haha
Are you going to suggest a few simple songs to learn using c major scale? I bought two of the same brand. Want to give one to granddaughter. I’m hoping she and I can play a song together. They are very beautiful. I’m glad I found you.
Hi there. I recommend learning 'Twinkle Twinkle Little Star'. It is a easy yet recognisable song that is great for C Major. I have already made a tutorial on it, here is the link: ua-cam.com/video/pgzuHmdIQ2M/v-deo.html . Hope it goes well :)
I think it'd be best to play with both the skin on your thumbs and the nails. If you play with only your nails, playing notes simultaneously will cause notes to sound abrupt. Use your skin and then swipe down and pluck with your nails
Hey there! My first suggestion is to go with a reputable brand such as 'Kalimbatorium' or 'Kalimba Tree' as that will ensure that your Kalimba will be good quality. Also, the best Kalimba really depends on the person buying it. My advice is to just go with something that looks nice, has great reviews and is not too expensive. The Kalimbas I own are a Blue Mahogany 17-Key Muspor Kalimba (the one in this video), and an Arcanum S15 (you can find a review for it on my channel). Just search around online for a bit and I'm sure you'll find something great. Good luck!

Thank you!
Very very cool video man! 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Keep doing more episodes I just bought a kalimba keep up the episodes so i can learn how to use a kalimba
I've been using that same tuning app for years. DaTuner I think? Has always worked well for me.
im getting my first kalimba soon i cant wait!!
I like this guy voice, it's so calming and studyfying
Thanks :)
So I bought a kalimba and a small desk, I unpacked both at the same time, thought the hammer definitely came with the desk (since I had to set it up). Played this video later that day, then it all made sense lol
Cool! Glad that the video helped out 😇
Me: *watching kalimba tutorial*
Also me: *only uses kalimba app*
so, its great way to practice and at least memorize songs when you get kalimba one day.
i use app called Real Kalimba on phone and i memorized few songs and can play them at like 0.75 speed.
im gonna buy kalimba in summer and its better than not having previous experience at all.
plus you hold phone and play with thumbs just like real kalimba, so its great simulation
When playing kalimba, should I memorize the placement of the keys (to play the kalimba while looking at the tabs/notes at all times) or should I memorize the tabs/notes for different songs instead (to look at the kalimba while playing without going back and forth to the tab/notes)? I've been playing the kalimba while looking at both the keys and tabs/notes at the same time, and it's a bit difficult to play smoothly.
thank you! Today i just got a kalimba today and I love it soo much :)
It's fun seeing how many people are adding on to my post with ME TOO! How fun. Now, if we can just learn to play them!
I subscribe first and 👍👍👍
I just got my kalimba today and I'm here to tell you that plucking the tines just right is a lot trickier than I thought. If you've been using a kalimba app to learn and dip your toes in, wonderful! But you are definitely in for a surprise.
Is it too hard?
You have a great voice..
And a great Kalimba ...
Great video. I used to have a couple of these. Had no idea how to tune them. Or how they were tuned
I'm glad to see that it helped!

Very useful viduo, i learned so many things including toning, thank u
This was soo helpful thank youuu
Hi, thanks for this tutorial. I just ordered my first kalimba and I can't wait to play it!
So there are no sharps and flats in a 17-key kalimba?
Great to see you found it helpful!
Kalimba was very attractive a musical instrument.
Your teaching is interresting.~핑크콩

Are you going to suggest a few simple songs to learn using c major scale? I bought two of the same brand. Want to give one to granddaughter. I’m hoping she and I can play a song together. They are very beautiful. I’m glad I found you.
Hi there. I recommend learning 'Twinkle Twinkle Little Star'. It is a easy yet recognisable song that is great for C Major. I have already made a tutorial on it, here is the link: ua-cam.com/video/pgzuHmdIQ2M/v-deo.html . Hope it goes well :)
What tuning app are you using? 😄 it looks very simple and easy to follow
Literally just found out that this exists 5 minutes ago and I want one ( I think 3 instruments are a good number)😂🤷♀️
Hell yeah thanks! Got a Kalmiba for Christmas
This was very helpful. Thank you so much. ❤️
You're welcome! Glad that it helped.
I think it'd be best to play with both the skin on your thumbs and the nails. If you play with only your nails, playing notes simultaneously will cause notes to sound abrupt. Use your skin and then swipe down and pluck with your nails
Have a question , I'm gonna buy a kalimba but don't know which is the best. Do you have any recommendations?
Good luck!
@@KalimbaCam Thank you so much for the advice and information :D
Thank you for sharing!!
