I've received a lot of questions regarding how I located my cab mounts.I hope this little video answers some of your questions. This is only to be used as a reference. It is totally up to you to decide exactly where to mount them. The cab mounts are made of 1/4 in.4X4 square tubing. I think 3/16 would have been plenty thick but that's all they had at the place I get my supplies. - Авто та транспорт
Thanks!! I needed this video ,building on a budget not planning to break the bank! Get ready for questions to come your way. Again Thank You for ALL your help.
Good job documenting this process. I know many people are grateful for this. I have plans to do this once I get to the states.
Thanks Porter, glad it was helpful
Thanks so much, you are awesome for making this video. I am building one myself.
Excellent info, look forward to further video additions! Have been repairing my 55 (1st) throughout the winter and just got a 95 Sonoma V6 5-sp for the donor. Tough finding a reg cab long box V6 stick (want stick)! Planned on going DIY anyway but nothing shows the simplicity of it like this video. Looks to be very little fabrication and a ton of tape measure time. Not at all upset about both controling the height I want and not spending $1K for a kit.
Thanks for taking time to show this and good luck as you progress!
Thanks DunkinDicky. Yes a lot of figuring and research. You can find more info here 67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/forumdisplay.php?f=13 and on the HAMB and Kill Billet.com. Thanks for watching.
Thanks for sharing. I've got a long ways to go and I'm missing a lot but it's going to be fun. I've got a 52 Chevrolet 3100. I've also got a 91 extra cab S10 I'll use a almost brand new Aluminum block LS 5.3 with the S10 700R4 and I'll be well on the way. I need a Box or maybe the back end of a 50s Chevrolet Tin Woody, to make Cameo! I'm dreaming.....
real good video and great advice, just wanted to say that cause I know sometimes people like me get some what mind boggled and seeing stuff like this makes it easier to get back in that garage.
Looks good man. Your video is way more detailed than the one I posted a while back.
TheEnragedHawk Thanks I tied to hit the hi points. Im sure i missed something.
looks great man!!! i've got a 1954 i'm going to be tackling soon!! just got the s10 reg cab just need to tear that down great tips!!!
Awesome man. Let me know how it goes. Im finally working on mine after a couple years of no progress. Might do another video in a few weeks
I appreciate you doing this, about to find a S10 frame for my 54 3600. Im also planning on making it a short bed. I'm saving you and will be in touch. My dad's had this truck longer than I've been alive and I'm 31. I got it running and driving, and redone the interior. The outside is Rusty black... Plan on leaving it that way... Anyway, just tagged it and got it legal. The last tag I unbolted ok off the back was 1969... It's now cleaned up and on the front. So tired of doing 40-45.... Time to bring it up to today going and stopping power.
Jeremy Moore thanks for the comments. If you are going to shorten the 3600 to the length of a 3100, the best S10 frame to use is a long bed regular cab. They have a 117 inch wheelbase. The 3100 has a 116 inch wheelbase.
Bartman's Garage was your truck a longbed s10
Jake Browne yes it was. Wheel base was 122 inches so I shortened it 5 inches
For about $1500 you can weld a mustang 2 kit in the front and a 4 link in the rear and use the original frame. Then you have even a better suspension and its all new. box the frame in the place the suspension welds in. I realize its a bit more money but it seams like a far better way way to go to me. But it looks good and like it will work
Jeremy Miller true but I didn’t have $1500.
@@Bartmans_Garage So its been a while since you posted that video. Did you ever get that project done. I love the patina on that old truck. in the process of building the same truck. mine is complete roller with a sbc and 5 speed. I hope to put the cab on and fire the engine this weekend. I still got a ways to go. I still have to shit about 3 grand myself to finish. but its been fun cutting and modifying the frame. I am 44 and this is my first ground up hot rod build.
I guess I will go check out your videos so I can see how it came out. but it looks real good I just wanted all new parts but I can understand why people use the s10 frames.
Great video. I was thinking of going with a 4-wheel drive S-10 frame with some lift on my 1951 Chevy truck, something different for here in Iowa.
That should work just fine!
Awesome information! Iam building a 51 and iam building my cab mounts right now!
I don’t know of any easy way to do it. You have to have the final cab location and front sheet metal location nailed down. You might want to check some of the guys on the forums. Some of them even recessed the firewall with some of the bigger motors. I had all my sheet metal sitting in place and lowered the motor into place and just tacked something together. My mechanical fuel pump required me to set the engine height about 2 1/2 to 3 inches above the front crossmember so the fuel pump could be removed in the future. Just make sure you look at all the builds on the forums that you can. You will probably find what you are looking for
can u email me some more info on mounting the front fenders, was unclear on ur you tube video, i hhave a 48 chevy p/u ? my email is sobcombs@gmail.com

What kind of rearend did you put in your truck
Thank you for documentary of how you did you truck, I will continue following you, what engine are running ? Thanks again more later. Michael
Great job Bartman! I've seen your build thread on 67-72. I'm working on one myself, not as far along but I'm getting ready to mount my cab. If you were to move your front wheels further forward how much would you have gone, 1/4, 1/2 in.?
Hey thanks Bartman... I am going to do a 1954 GMC pickup and want all the creator features so my wife can drive it...
May want to get some info from you on the various pieces you made for your truck. Enjoyed your video.
Did you ever finish it if so how about a vid of it
A real good video and a great motivator to finally start my build.
Thanks for all the info Bart, really kick start me in the right direction. Great work
Your welcome and Thanks back at you.
Good hints, looking at tackling the same project, nice work
Awesome video sir, I have a 1950 3 window and a 1951 5 window that I doing s10 swap with 5.3 LSU and 4l80 trans. Is it to much to ask that you email details on the making and location of all the mounts..... thanks in advance.
Did you set your engine back any? Which engine did you use? This will matter where to set front cab mounts! Thx
I used a 305 engine and yes I set it back some. I mocked up some home made engine mounts with the engine hanging on the cherry picker while all of the front sheet metal was mocked up on place.
Thank you for the video It has been a great help for me. I would like to know how did you fire up your engine. the fuel and electrical part.
I have a 53 5 window 3600..... Its a 3/4 ton. Should I still s10 swap the frame or is this frame heavy duty enough to handle an ls swap?
If you’re swapping the chassis weight should not be an issue you’re just setting the sheet metal on those 10. But I don’t know about the wheel base how well they would match up. You may need to add links to the S 10 Chelsea. Or you could shorten them 53 Chevy bed.
Length
Are you setting your engine back 4”? What is the distance from front axle to front mount? I was told 30”?
The best wat to locate the front cab mounts is to put them 2 inches forward of the oval hole on the side of the frame. I cant really give you a measurement from the axel to the location. But I mocked up all my front sheet metal to double check that my front wheels were centered in the wheel well. this video explains that to some extent.
Oh and Yes I did move the motor back back but not sure how much. I fabbed my own motor mounts and kept the engine away from the firewall a good couple inches.
Can we see your final product? Especially a good slow video of the underside would be fantastic. Thank you!
Richard Libby I wish you could. I’ve been in limbo on this project for several years due to life’s setbacks. But someday I hope to get it on the road
how did you title this truck if the serial numbers are on the frame beside the steering gear box if it gets stolen what title will you use for insurance claims S10 or the 51 Chevy ? get pulled over for a traffic stop and have to show license and registration police now have Mobil computers that tell where the numbers are at and they must match
Im working on the same truck. Can you tell me the measurements/dementions of the bracket you made? Please and thank you
can i use a shortbed frame o does it have to be a long bed frame hav a 51 chev truck also thx
Very good video. Thanks
Kewl truck. I'm useing a 98 S10, extended cab I want to keep the stock rear end, but there is mid ship bearing on my drive shaft. Could I get by with a shorter straight drive shaft set up that matches the new transmission straight to the rear end, like on normal full size truck? I got a guy that builds drive shafts and he did a replacement for my old Chevy K5 blazer and he had it perfect and only had the to ends to work with.
Yes I think most guys are using a 1 piece driveshaft . If you are going with a V8 engine you definitely have to move the motor mounts back 4 or 5 inches and will need a different drive shaft anyway.
Thanks. I was not sure but that was my plan. I thought about a flat head six but it was locked up pretty good.
very nice! any particular year or style of s10? will a blazer work? thanks!
The best style to use is a regular cab long bed because they are 117 inch wheel base. If you look at a 47-55 1st series chevy truck you will notice that the rear wheels are not really centered in the rear wheel well. They sit a little forward of center. The wheelbase on those old trucks (3100) is 116 inches. So the extra inch of the regular cab long bed S10 is a great fit. Some guys use a short bed reg cab and add some inches to the frame or do like I did and shorten an extended cab frame. A blazer has a few more challenges. None of the wheel bases are a direct swap and the frame has a dramatic flare out or widening under the doors which make it almost impossible to use There is one guy doing a blazer frame swap on the 67-72chevytrucks.com/ forum. you might check it out. But you can pick up an S10 pick up frame for $100.00 on craigslist most of the time. I think about any year will work.
Considering this to get a better suspension in the front.
TurboFlush that is what I was after. Modern disk breaks and coil springs, power steering etc
@@Bartmans_Garage
Did you consider an IFS kit? Cost looks about the same (unless you get s10for free).
TurboFlush I got the entire chassis for $100. I put new ball joints and upper control arm bushings in. I probably have less than $300 in the whole thing
hey man cool of you to share your know how. i have a 95 s10 extendacab. is this an allright frame/chassis to use. i have heard your suppose to use standard cab long bed frames/chassis, are these the same, thankx
Blake Norman Sorry it took so long to reply. No the chassis are not the same. The Extended cab frame is 122 inch wheel base and the reg cab/long bed frame is 117 inches. I shortened en extended cab frame by 5 inches. I have a video of the process. good luck with your project.
From what year to what year has to be the s10 truck or blazer do i need to swap the chasies for a 49' chevy truck
I thought i was the only one with a kitchen range in my shop.Do you use it for powder coating also?
Actually my wife thinks we need to keep it in case we need an extra oven for cooking Thanksgiving or Christmas dinner. Funny thing. It's been sitting there for 2 years and we have not used it once. But can I get rid of it?? NO. LOL. So says "The Boss"!
I ,am starting the same process with a S10 frame mounting a 1954 chevy 5 window any advice would help
Russel McGee Watch my videos and check out the following website. 67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/showthread.php?t=632686
What frame did you use ? Regular cab ? King cab?
I used an extended cab. There’s a video in my channel on how to shorten it to 117
i would have went that route too, a thousand bucks for a kit, better learning exp as well figuring it out on your own like you did,
Thanks Streetrodder100. It's been a lot of fun as well as a learning experience. This is my first ever build. Lots of research involved before tearing into it.
Do you fab the mounts and sell them?
Hey I was wondering if you knew if a s10 extended cab short bed would work for a donor frame
Yes, that is the exact frame that I used in this video. However the wheel base is 122 inches so it will need to be shortened. There is another video on my channel of how to shorten it. I would highly suggest that you try to find a regular cab long bed chassis. They are 117 inches and the perfect length for the swap. Shortening the chassis is a lot of work and time involved.
I have a 1953 gmc do you no what the differences are in the chevy core support?
No I don't.. do you belong to The 1947 - 1959 Chevrolet & GMC Pickups Message Board? here is a link.
67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/forumdisplay.php?f=13
There are a lot of builds on there that show what you are probably looking for.
What is the cut in the front measurements?
Any info you can send will be a great help. thank you GREAT JOB
Awesome video, If I may ask, what radiator did you use? The standard S10, or another model? Your help would be greatly appreciated!! Thank you!
+Evan Toms I used a 65 mustang radiator. You can pick a new one up at autozone for about $110.00. I think a 73 mustang radiator is an inch or two wider and I probably would have had enough room for it.
Bartman's Garage Thank you very much!
oops that should have said 67 not 73
Evan Toms Just went to Auto Zone and the outlets were not on the correct sides, on the original Chevy radiator the outlets are in a criss cross pattern, where as the Mustang radiator the outlets were on the same side. Are you sure that it was a 67? Is the one that you are talking about for an automatic, or standard? Because we have found that there is a difference.
Bartman's Garage 7
is the s10 better to use than a full size truck.i was going to use full size for stronger and pulling.mine is 50 gmc.they are surly sought after when they go down the road buring tires.
If you use a regular gab long bed s10 chassis it is the perfect wheelbase for the 3100 series advance design trucks. As far as track width goes the full size trucks are much too wide to achieve a stock appearance. If you are going for the 4WD look then a full size would probably be ok because the tires are going to stick out of the wheel wells a good 2 or more inches on both sides. But if you want to keep your old chevy looking somewhat stock or drop it a few inches you are going to want to use the s10 chassis. Also as far as strength the S10 uses the same front suspension as the G Body GM cars used. Plus the front 2/3rds of the S10 frame is already boxed. In my opinion it is plenty strong for an everyday driver.
well I asked and now I know.i will find the s-10 instead and take it that way.one more if I may ask.the ole truck is as it was when new.nothing has been changed at all.am I wrong to make it modern or should I just redo each piece as factory done it.may be one of those you have to decide things but in the end the money part is important when it comes to saling it.thank you so much for helping me.i do dream of smoking tires though
Well it kind of all depends on whether you are just going to put around town or do you want to go modern highway speeds. Is it going to be a daily driver or just drive on sundays etc.
If would want modern highway speeds then I suggest modern suspension and modern breaks. But you CAN get a front disk brake kit for the straight axle you have now., Drop a 350 engine, turbo 350 tranny and a modern rear end it it. That is a good compromise. That may be cheaper in the long run but pretty fun to drive.
The best thing in my opinion is to look at all your options and do tons of research. Once you start done which ever road you choose there is no turning back. If I had it to do over I might do as i mentioned above and keep the original chassis but now I'm committed to the S10
well that takes a real man to say that.i guess I want both ways but I know keeping it Detroit will make my kids better off.so many that were left has went to the s10,eroding the pile even more.still don't take away wanting it the fun way.ill just get 2.i am lucky for my one.again that was a big thing to say.ok ok would you sub out front frame, with the knowledge you have now, instead of s10.your pick would be what.
I've seen a few on the 67-72 website that did sub them out. I think that some of them use a camaro front clip but not sure what years. You should pose that question on the forum and ask. Im sure many have info on that. There is nothing wrong with going that way if you have the skills or know someone who does.
Thanks for the information!
Most definitely can help me out and probably a lot of other guys I'd love to get some of these links and some of these diagrams or whatever you've gotten maybe you could give us exact measurements of body mounts the height and width of the bed mounts any information would be great please and thank you

Hello,What year chassis did you use and is this regular cab or extended cab. I have a 55 3100 and I'm looking to swap my chassis .Thanks
+Gamer Girl I used a 1996 s10 chassis. I used an extended cab short bed which was 5 inches too long and had to be cut down. Your best bet is to use a regular cab long bed. its the perfect length for the 3100 chevy trucks
Did you use a long or short s10 frame
I use the extended cab short bed frame, 122 inches and shortened it 5 inches to 117. You would be ahead to find a regular cab long bed frame so you don't have to modify it. It would be 117 inches.
@@Bartmans_Garage Thank You😁
That's a fine job
Hey bartman . I was wondering where did you find the blue prints to make the body mounts at.
If you google 67-72 chevy truck you will find a forum that covers most every year of chevy truck and you con do a search. I have a copy saved and can email it to you

How about engine location for welding in motor mounts Im using 454 but 350 being same
What year is the s10 regular cab or extended cab?
1994 or 96 can remember for sure. Do some checking. I’ve heard that about 86 up into the 2000’s will work
Regular cab long bed is the best. Only 2 inch different in wheel base than the 3100 chevy. Use it as is
What headers did you use please
If you do a search for S 10 V8 swap you will find them. It leaves room for a steering column to pass through.

Great work !!! you can send me information about this work ?? I have a chevy 1951 and need all the information posible. Thanks
Do you think those same mounts would work on a 4wd?
Yes
Hey what's up bartman?. I have a 1951 chevy pick up truck and I wanna do an s10 frame swap on it but I'm not sure what kind of s10 to get?? I don't wanna have to do any cutting and shortening of the frame so should I search for a short bed single cab or will a extended cab work? Any info will be greatly appreciated thank you.
Michael Ontiveros if your Chevy truck is a 3100 then the wheelbase is 116 inched. You will need to find a regular cab long bed S10. They have a wheelbase of 117 inches. All other S10 trucks will be too short or too long
@@Bartmans_Garage cool thank you for responding to my message and thanks for the very useful information now I know what kind of s10 truck to look for thanks again bartman you are much appreciated!.

slickrick2157 well it’s pretty much at a stand still. Shortage of time and money. Sometimes life gets in the way. Good luck on your project.
Is it a long bed chassis or short bed
It was an extended cab short bed which is 5 inches too long. If you can find a regular cab long bed you are way ahead of the game.
Thank you so much, Im planning to do the same on my 1950. That was awesome.
i bought 1955 ford f100 it is sitting on chevy frame with 305 motor, how can i know what year the frame is ? thanks
herschel weaver I’m really not an authority on Chevy frames, etc. I don’t know if there are numbers stamped somewhere or not. An old school body man or mechanic might be able to answer that for you.
Cool project
Where does the cut in the front start.
I cut the front frame horns off just in front of the oval shaped hole.
hi mr i'm close to star with my 1950 in a regular cab S 10 is correct legnth ? about the S10 drive shaft? are you cut it?
If you get the S10 with a regular cab and long bed it should be the correct length. if it has a short bed you will have to dad b inches or so to the frame. I doubt if the drive shaft with fit without having it cut. Good Luck!
Thanks a lot ...
OOps I fat fingered my response. If it has a short bed you will have to add 5 or 6 inches. or so to the frame.
The S10 with a regular cab and long bed has a wheel base of 117 inches. The 47-54 3100 has a wheelbase of 116. close enough. And If you look closely at the stock 3100 the rear wheels actually sit forward of center in the rear fender so the Stock S10 frame will help center that up a bit.
Bartman's Garage ok perfect realy good info for me i'm looking a 98-99 S10 shifter
Wow nice job
hello there Bartman what year chevy s10 chassis did you use i have a 1998 shortbed chassis is that will work?
Hello back!. Mine is a 1996. I don't think there is any issue using a 98. The main thing is the wheel base. The 3100 (1/2 ton) 47-55 first series has a 116 inch wheelbase. If you use an S10 that is a regular cab, LONG bed you have a 117 inch wheelbase. Perfect, because the rear axle in the 47-54 sit a little forward of center in the old trucks and that will move it closer to center. If you have a short bed extended cab (which is what I used) you are going to have a 122 inch wheelbase which is do-able if you don't mind shortening the frame.I have a video on my channel of how to do that. I'm not sure what a short bed regular cab is, but you will have to add some.
Yeah it's actually 106.5 inch long so i am guessing
Take a look at this Build thread located on a website called Killbillet.com. The guy details how to change the wheelbase on a short bed regular cab S10 without cutting it in half. www.killbillet.com/showthread.php?16296-1948-Chevy-5-window-on-an-s10-frame-(step-by-step)&highlight=62chevyII
i actually just reliaed the truck i purchased which i havw not yet recived since ist coming from denver Colorado is a 3600 long bed and i think i like that look so will be keeping it long bed what chassis do you think i will need for that one? or the one i gut could be also lengthen or its not worthy and i should get a extended can long bed? what brakets you used to have the cab sit on do you have the measurement you did? thanks alot bud.

Im not sure what the wheelbase in on the 3600. Ill do some checking and get back to you. Also I made my own cab and bed mounts. I can find you a drawing of them. Give me a few days And I will get back to you.
I have a 1953 5 window I dont wanna spend lots of $ but I do want the best way so I can help everyone else in the near future. I saw on another video where they had a 1997 Ford Mountaineer they removed the whole body and placed a 1952 Ford truck body on this frame Im looking to have disc brakes all around power steering positive traction.
What size tubing did you use for the cab mounts?
4x4 1/4 inch thick. Could go a little thinner
Thanks for the Info !
Looks awesome.
Thanks man
Is this factory length chasi
It was 122 inches I shortened it 5 inches
Thanks so much for your sharing and the knowledge base. I came here because I am attempting a 3 way marriage: FRAME: 2wd S 10 long bed frame with the wider 3.42 rear axle from a 4wd 2000 blazer DRIVE TRAIN: 1996 Caprice LT1 with 4l60e trans and OBD2 Harness. BODY: 1956 CHEVY Grumman AERO Step Van. I hope to be able to use AC, column, AC, heater, exhaust and fuel tank/pump from the Caprice. WIRING: looking at the LT1 Kit by painless. Do you know of anyone using the S-10 on a forward cab design like a step van?
Mo I don't but I'm sure its been done. Should be interesting. I know a guy who did a cab over engine 48 Chevy truck and he used a full size Chevy van as a frame and drive train donor. He mounted the cab low on the frame and put the engine behind the cab.
hello do I think a 02 s10 short bed will work for a 54
You will have to move the rear axle back to get the correct wheel base but it can be done. I will try to add a link here to a build thread over on the "killbillet" web site. pay very close attention to how he moves the rear axle back without cutting the truck apart in the middle and adding length to the frame. Its very slick! www.killbillet.com/showthread.php?16296-1948-Chevy-5-window-on-an-s10-frame-(step-by-step)

maury1820 yes absolutely that is the perfect choice. No cutting needed.
If you check my channel, I'm in the middle of a similar swap, my body is a 1950 (or there abouts) Dodge Panel. My chassis is a 1994 Toyota Hilux 2WD Ute (Australia).
I am a little stuck right now, as my plasma cutter needs consumables, but I want to lower the body over the chassis (Channel), so I think I'm going to be creating new body mounts this week and raising the floor by about 200mm in the rear. New sub floor all the way through, which I don't mind, as it's just a mobile billboard to drive out the front of my shop, then move back in at night. But I think this combination of Body and donor car is not really ideal, as the amount of work involved in making the body sit better is far greater than using a sedan or 4WD chassis, where it's much flatter in the rear.
I'm just doing this as cheap as I can do it though, because it's not really a complete restoration project like with most peoples projects, the body might get some attention later and I might decide to completely rebuild the body and repair the rust, but that's very expansive and I would rather start with a better body.
Sounds like a cool project. Yes I agree it's labor intensive. Goodluck
Chassis swaps are great, but S10 front end geometry is awful.
Nice Turned a real truck into a mini truck / car with a shit load of work. Pffffft waste of time.
Yeah. Thereby rescuing BOTH from a crusher and making a very fun, usable, vintage-looking truck with modern safety, power, braking, steering, suspension and fuel economy. What's the downside again?
