in every method i was like: ok it starts to look like fur. ok now it doesnt look like fur at all aaand now it looks like fur again aaand it's gone.... annnd it's up again. ok it's finished.... is it? yes it's finished.
Suncho actually every drawing disappoints me. In the beginning it's beautifully detailed and contrasted and then she ruins everything by just making the fur being all black or brown. In the end it's beautiful, yes, but what's the point with making such an effort if she just colours everything in the end ?
It adds depth. If I draw something and use just two colours it shows. Layering and building multiple tones really makes a difference. It's the key to a good piece of work, anything good takes time and patience 😊
@@agisa123456789 actually by doing alot of steps it gives more depth, a more realistic look, and it gives more of a less grainy look. but if you want a realism/illustration type of drawing, then yes you can stop at the beggining :)

is there any way you could show your reference photos in future videos? if I wanted to draw brown fur, for instance, I'd want to get out a brown pencil the exact same color. I'd be interested to see how you get from the photo to the first layer, second layer, etc., if that makes sense.
After my last drawing, I realised I had to up my game when it came to drawing fur. This video has helped loads! Tried all 5 methods and it's been a definite improvement on what I could do before, so thanks! Subbed and will be using your tuts for future reference.
this is honestly really inspirational and helpful, I really like your videos, i hope i could one day become a great artist, lately I've been kinda unmotivated to draw, i have so many ideas but its like i get tired of making the same mistakes I always make in my art, its like I try too hard or overthink things because i wanna improve but if i make a single mistake I give up on drawing it. I am not exactly sure what to do, I always go back and re-watch your videos to get something out of them but I feel like I'm the problem to everything, I feel like I have to change everything about myself to even overcome the little things and it doesn't seem to work, I always go back to doing nothing and only stressing out. I'm still trying because of people like you, you seem to really care about art and helping other artists and I am grateful for that (:
I\'m not sure but ,if anyone else needs to find out about steps to draw pencil portraits try Skyarza Portrait Coach Star (Have a quick look on google cant remember the place now ) ? Ive heard some decent things about it and my m8 got excellent success with it.
Your description along with showing your work is really good! Though I can't help but to think "What kind of sorcery is this!?" after a few layers. I never knew how to proceed passed one layer, so this was magical and so useful to me, at the same time!
What a great tutorial. Finally a tutorial on how to draw fur plus different techniques and fur colors!! Thank you so, so much. And it looks amazing! What kind of paper did you use? Keep up the awesome work! Learning so much from you!
Most excellent instructional video, thank you so much, I learned a lot about some new techniques! Not a fan of the annoying back ground music, though. Why not just use some nice classical guitar, violin, or piano music or some light jazz, or anything else? It would compliment your talent so much better. Just a suggestion. So many UA-cam people use than same irritating, nonsensical Euro-techno “music.” Thanks again for the beautiful work.
You are extremely talented when it comes to art hacks, drawing, shading, blending, burnishing, solvents, and coloring! Thank you for your technique tutorials....it really gave me the knowledge that i was lacking in some areas and much improvement on others. Can't wait to keep learning from your videos. Practice and patience! Have a good day!
Hello Kirsty. For the first method being layering, I'm having trouble drawing the white highlights using a white prismacolor pencil. All it does is blend the colors leaving a slight streak of white. Is there any way to overcome this because I really don't feel like ordering more pencils because I have urgent artwork to complete. Nice video overall by the way. :)
I remember when I was younger, l was drawing a portrait of my dog for the first time, when I finished the portrait I showed it to my dog and she started barking at me because I did not draw her fur correct.,l gave it another try and sketch her fur perfect with perfection.,and showed her the portrait, she then licked my face showing me gratitude. Every since then I never have gone wrong when drawing fur.😂
Kirsty Partridge Art thanks very much. I've been using the Medium Surface paper but alot of people suggest the Bristol style these days. I'll give it a try 😊
This video was awsome hun thank you for shareing. Wow u make it look so simple. I think that I'd still mess up. When I was in high school I had the highest grade. I stopped drawing due to starting a family. I'm 53 and feels like I'm starting from scratch again. Anyway ty for a amazing art video I also shared with my two grandchildren who are into art in a big way.
With all five I was like “WOW, how can this get any more beautiful” and then POOF another layer of beautifulness and I was like 😱HOW CAN YOU DO THIS!?!
I can use that on digital art as well. I don't like to use the "fur" or "hair" brushes. I can't work with them. I have less control over where the single hair strands go

(Also very very very late but yeah) I bought a toned paper sketchbook and drawing white fur or other white things on it is sooo pretty (I have grey but u also have more colours) a white cat on grey paper is so pretty !!
Hi, I dont know if you have the time to answer my question , but here it is. Do you rec any specific paper to Polycromos pencils ? I usually use solvent or layering method. I have not find any good paper yet ^^'
Sandra Chan try some good quality watercolor paper. You'd be able to use both layering and solvent on it as it is made for wet mediums and it also has a bit of tooth to it. She generally mentions the type of watercolor paper she uses for her solvent drawings in the description box and she also has a video on the types of paper you should use for specific types of drawings.
Late to comment but i have this same issue. I think they just have really nice, highly pigmented white pencils. I was thinking about investing a prismacolor white pencil or something more high-end like that (if i can just buy one ‘fancy-brand’ pencil at a time lol)
Hi Kirsty! Please, if you do not have a Caran D'Ache white pencil, which would be a better substitute? The Faber Castell white? or the Prismacolor white? Thanks so much for the tutorial!!!
Prismacolor would be better, I think, because it layers more solid over other colours. Polychromos white doesn't do that really well. With FC Poly you can sort of use the etching method with first drawing in your highlights white on blank paper and than go over with other colours. It sort of protects your highlights that way. With solvent you can than bring your hl back to nearly white.
I love your videos, I really enjoy your voice, also you're clear in your teaching so massive thumbs up 👍and you're a really good artist so inspiring too xxx

How do you draw white fur on white paper? It confuses me a lot when trying to draw my black and white cat with the fur texture.
Promises Animates! you have to add a dark color which blends in with the bade, eg. black. Then you add the white
usually just drawing in shadows
I find if you put down the etching and then a Light Beige it gives a nice textured look of white kitty cat hair
