I just bought the Canon T7, and 2 days later I found your site on youtube and I subscribed. You are fantastic, and since I am brand new to photography you are teaching me a lot. THanks. I would like to win that tri-pod you talked about, but I just watched your video and its already July 1st. I wish I could win that, it would help so much. Thanks again. Im 55, in not great health so my new healthy idea is learning photography for enjoyment purposes and it gets me out of the house once I learn how to use it correctly. Thanks once again.
I just stumbled upon you videos a few days ago. I usually watch about a 100 or more UA-cam videos a week but I have to say that you are one of the more informative and easy to listen to instructors that I have come across. I feel invigorated rather than exhausted after watching your videos.

Thanks again, Paul... Another great video... You explain everything in such a way even us rookie photographers can understand... I have already put a few of the lessons learned from you in my daily shooting routine, and they are working WONDERFULLY!!!! Am also recommending PHOTO GENIUS to my friends that are getting started in photography... Thanks again....
Thank you so much Wayne, it's feedback like yours that makes this so worthwhile - thanks also for telling others and supporting. Best wishes to you. Paul.
Thanks for the extra tips Paul! A lot of useful information as normal in your videos. I got my first camera just under a week ago so it's all a bit overwhelming at the moment so these Tips/Tutorial videos help out a lot!
I am now binge watching all your vlogs. Some fantastic tips, so easy to follow too. I have just bought my first canon camera. By having the same camera as you it’s so easy to learn some amazing tips thank you.
I truly appreciate this particular tutorial! After I purchased my new Canon EOS M50, I found myself looking at the live view LCD versus the viewfinder. As a result, my pictures were sometimes blurry and videos were quite shaky. While I love the live view LCD screen, I have sought to make a concentrated effort to use the viewfinder. This have made all the difference. Now I use the live view LCD screen more when I’m using a tripod and the viewfinder for handheld shooting. 😊
I bought my EOS last year but never really got the chance to use it. I have learned more about my camera this week watching your tutorials than from any book. We are on lock down but I have started taking my camera with me on my daily walk. Cheers Paul.
Back in the 80’s (yes I’m old 😁) I bought a Slik 95D tripod. Still using it now. Cheap and cheerful but has proven its worth. They don’t have to be expensive to be effective
Thank you so much, Paul. I appreciate your use of plain language in this video. Tbis was very helpful and above all, encouraging. Take care and thank you again!
Another great one. I went from having absolutely not a clue on cameras to being able to make my way around without frustration, and getting some nice shots. I highly recomend this channel to people who want to learn and succeed at photgraphy..I am far away from picture perfect get it..lol..but Pauls videos help out so much to get to that goal, and he even answers questions that I have asked and thats an added bonus..Thanks again Paul!! GET IN THE WOODS
Reading comments like yours make it all so worthwhile, so a big thank you for taking theme to watch my videos and commenting. The more support this channel gets the more time I can invest in producing content, so your support is very much appreciated. Best wishes Paul @ Photo Genius.
Hi Paul, let me just start off with how much you have helped me understand about taking good pictures! I have been watching many of your guides, they are really simple to follow and on point which I really like! so keep up the good work! My question to you is, I am trying to take pictures of homes as a real estate project. Can you make a guide on how to take good pictures indoor of houses and rooms etc. ?
Hi Paul, I love your videos, you explain everything VERY clearly. I'm a beginner shooting with a Canon Rebel T6. I've been applying your lessons to shoot in Manual Mode, but when I'm shooting birds I am usually in the woods and struggle to quickly find the right settings when the birds are moving from light to shade. What do you suggest? I Also can you recommend a backpack(s) for 1 camera with space for a 100-400mm zoom, tripod, and water bottle? Many thanks!
Hello Paul, I am happy to have found you ! As a beginner I cannot get enough advice. I was wondering, if you hold the lens with your left hand, don't you disturb the autofocus ?
Hi Paul, love your UA-cam videos. The info is great for a new ‘old bloke’ like me relatively new to photography. Have tried to enter your competition on your website, couldn’t find the comp re tripod. I am in the UK so guess it’s not open the ‘Pom’s’. 😂😂 Won’t hold it against you, keep the vids coming. Cheers, Phil.
Thanks Paul, for such videos in a very simple and straightforward manner...I'm learning a lot, kudos to your videos...Hoping you get more subscribers...keep the good work going...😊
Hi Paul...i watch your videos on a regular basis and i really love your teaching style..i have a question to you..what maximum iso should i keep in a crop sensor camera like canon 800d to avoid digital noise or grainy pic ? Is iso till 6400 is ok ? Please help me out
Hi Paul, thank you for your wonderfull videos.I want to ask you what we do if both camera and lens have VR and we shoot handheld.Shall we turn on both? If not which one to turn on?Thank you.
Another excellent video. As an amateur and newbie, these videos are so helpful (so clear) in what can be a little overwhelming at times. If I may ask your opinion on something. I use Nikon and specifially for my main interest sports photography, the 70-300 VR. What are your views/advice on VR while using a monopode? On or Off. Is it as significant as with a tripod? Thank you.
When I'm using a monopod I turn the VR on. If your lens has it also select active VR - this mode is designed for use when tracking subjects so great for sports. Thanks for watching and supporting my channel. Paul @ Photo Genius
Thank you for your response, it is most helpful. Thank you again for these wonderful videos. They have been so helpful to me as a new recruit to photography. I had one of my first experiences taking sports shots recently and while some images had some issues such as focus off subject, blur etc, I was pleasently surprised at how most turned out, despite challenging circumstances - light, space etc. Thanks in no small part to what I have learned from your videos, I recognise what went wrong with those images that did not work. I am very familiar with the sport I was shooting, so that definitley helped a great deal also. Please keep these videos coming, they are very much appreciated. Best.
Hello Paul, thank you for all you help over the past weeks. Your videos make me excited about learning, and quite decent at taking my hobby to the next level. My question is about the aperture tip, does it apply to prime lenses as well as telephotos? Or just prime? Are you saying that a prime lens with a smaller aperture would make a sharper photo over a telephoto lens with a smaller? Or does the apply to either lens?
Hello Photo Genious, I was wondering do you have a tutorial on how to produce a sharp print which is ordered from a professional printing company. Because when I send a sharp digital image to the printers my prints are coming back a little soft. Should I use a sharpening mask in Lightroom classic?
Hi Allen. Sorry this is not a subject that I've covered. Most pro labs should be able to provide information so the you can get the best image possible, for example I use Streets Imaging in Brisbane and this link gives you an idea of some of the things you may want to consider such as colour management and file types. www.streetsimaging.com.au/colour-management
Great video, Paul. I've read somewhere that IS should be turned off when shooting, say, sports at fast shutter speeds. Any truth in this? I've never bothered to do so and never had a problem.
If your shutter is particularly fast then the IS shouldn't really be required, but I don't think having it turned on will be an issue. Thanks for watching Peter.
I am watching your videos since 10 days, your way of presentation is very easy.So I want to know about back button focus in detail.I am having canon T3i model.pl.explain.thnx
When you're looking through the hole how can you tell the manual focus is in focus? With view finder I can zoom far in and ensure sharpness before snapping. Whenever I take a photo looking through, it's always blurry.
Oh I get it..So I've been watching you're moon shot video....you said to put your settings at 250. I have a canon camera so I need to put it at 300 length, x 1.6 for = 360 right?
Very helpful tips as always.I have one question,in 18 55 Vr lens If i am shooting at 55 mm for a portrait on a crop sensor camera with that Vr lens,do i have to be at 1/60 or 1/80 of shutter speed when i am handholding it or i can go few stops slower than that may be 1/30 or 1/15 shutter speed like 1 or 2 stops lower because the lens being image stabalised??
With your kit lens, I would aim for 1/60 or faster. If you are unsteady with the camera then 1/80 is better and of course because you have VR you can effectively shoot at slower shutter speeds - so you may get away with a much slower shutter speed. Do some test shots at various shutter speeds and see how you get on.
@@photogenius Thank you for your suggestion.I will try that :) by the way I have one another lens which is non Vr lens of 19 35mm 3.5 4.5 vivitar series lens,if I shoot at 35 mm is it ok to shoot handheld at may be 1/60 shutter speed at the slowest to get blurred free images because of lens being Non Vr?any shutter speed suggestions for non vr lenses ?and another thing is that the lens has bad flaring when shooting into the sun.I have a UV haze filter which i don't use it often, will that help to reduce flare and also haze in the sky if in use???or shall i purchase a screw hood in the market ?do you think the hood will work ie for flaring?i am also a bit concerned if the hood will cast a shadow in pictures therefore i am hesitant to make that purchase. That's why i am asking you for your suggestion regarding this.I will wait for your reply,Thank you Paul.
A hood is a great idea, but make sure it suits the lens or you will get dark corners in your images. A hood is great for reducing lens flare but if you point the camera directly at a light source then it will do nothing. 1/60 should be fins with your Vivitar lens as long as you have steady hands.
I have a canon T5 but always feel those photos aren’t sharp enough. Could you please help me understand the settings of a canon T5 since I’m new to photography?
My Instagram is harralmussa. Could you check some photos and give any feedback to the photos? I feel like my photos are blurry and not as great as other great photographers. Is the edits I put ruin the photos?
Hi Harrold, firstly thank you for watching. The T5 is a great camera and I’m sure you will be able to take great photos, but the key is to learn how to get the most from it. Watch my videos, practice and you’ll soon be taking better photos.
Thank you for amazing videos! I bought myself an canon T7I with and kit lens of 18-55mm. I also got 50mm f 1.8. I travel a lot and take a lot of photos. I want to know what APC-S lens can recommend that would be good for traveling and all around type. Thank you again.
A third lens would have to add something to your kit that you currently don't have. If you desire a wider view the the 10-18mm lens would be worth considering. If you wish to capture subjects that are further away then a telephoto such as the 55-200MM STM ZOOM might be worth checking out. Thanks for watching and supporting my channel.
What if I don’t have live view on my canon camera and can not digital zoom before taking the shot; how do I nail focus every time while using manual focus? Thank you!
4:35 I'm gonna try and put that to practice next time I'm out taking pictures! Can't wait to see the results 😁 I took some photos earlier this week of butterflies (We have an 'invasion' from Africa atm xD) and some turned out great - However I'm sure this new trick will help ensure more focus out of the box. Very good video overall with many useful hints and instructions. I might have to finally dive into which photo editor I'll be using since I've decided never to revisit Adobe 😒 Aurora HDR looks very promising 🤗
@@photogenius Butterflies are certainly tricky - And once I finally found one that busy eating nectar a bee came shortly after and scared the bugger away 😂 - Went to the cemetery, as I always do haha and spotted one butterfly I had the pleasure to shoot for 5 minutes! About 2-3 minutes in, after I had inched so far in I was practically on top of it, I captured a sequence of it walking while having it's wings closed, out to the sun to bathe 😊 Still haven't gotten around to making a .gif/whatever out of it yet though but it'll come!
one funny question --- if my camera is limited by f stop 8.0 and still I want to take sharp landscape photo wit my manual mode Can I place something like a pin hole disc in front of the lens and increase exposure by putting the camera on tri pod off course ?
Hello Paul great video mate! The Nikon crop factor your talking about is that for a dx camera? What about the fx camera I take it you shoot at 200mm don't go below 200mm?
Paul, a question: I do have an old Nikon N2000,with a 50mm 1.8 lens. Can I use this lens on my D90? Or should I buy a nifty fifty from Nikon, with auto focus? Should I look after any other specs? (there are more than one type of 50mm?)
Hi Rodney, the old lens should fit your D90 no problem - but the Auto Focus will not work so you will have to focus manually. Nikon offer two popular 50mm (f1.8) lenses, the G version is the most popular and then I would recommend. Thanks for watching.
Hiya! Thanks so much for your videos. I'm just starting out using a dslr camera and your videos have been so great. I was just wondering if the rule of multiplying your focal length with a fraction I.e 1.6 for canon (which I have) specifically only applies when using a telephoto lens? At what point do you start multiplying to pick your shutter speed? Is it anything over 100mm? Thank you :)
@@photogenius mate care to give me advice on this emolux 0.45mm wide angle converter i recent purchase. To me is a great product on my kit len 16-50mm.
Hi! I just recently got my camera. My daughter was messing around with it. Anytime I take a picture with anything faster than 1” the photo is completely black, any tips?
Hi. How do I stop the flash in interior low light..ie a church where flash is not allowed. Ive tried so many settings but end up muddy blurred images. Am I going to have to use a tripod. Is there a fulproof setting
Hi Elizabeth, let me try and help you . . . "How do I stop the flash in interior low light.." - When using auto the camera will pop the flash up when you are shooting in low light, unfortunately usually with awful results! The solution here is to use either the flash off mode or better still try using the cameras Manual modes (M,A,S,P) - P (programme mode) is a good place to start. "Am I going to have to use a tripod. Is there a fulproof setting" - using a tripod will certainly be a good idea as you can then select slower shutter speeds (your shutter will be open longer) which will allow more light into the camera and make your image brighter. Watch my video about how to control exposure : ua-cam.com/video/6CEH_31K6YU/v-deo.html
Most current DSLR / Mirrorless cameras will do the job just fine. The lens is actually going to be something you should consider more than the body of the camera. Look for a good telephoto lens and learn how to use the camera manually for better results.
Yep, that can work - but if you are close to the subject you may find that focusing on a subject then re-composing throws the subject slightly out of focus.
Thanks for watching this video and supporting the Photo Genius channel.

I am watching your videos since 10 days, your way of presentation is very easy.So I want to know about back button focus in detail.I am having canon T3i model.pl.explain.thnx
Thank you Paul , i always learn something new in your videos .
I am so pleased, thanks for supporting my channel - I hope I can continue to bring you more great tips and help you to take even better photos.
Love your videos❤️
Is the contest open only to Australia?
Nope anyone can enter - thanks for watching.
When you're looking through the hole how can you tell the manual focus is in focus? With view finder I can zoom far in and ensure sharpness before snapping. Whenever I take a photo looking through, it's always blurry.
You are a lifesaver, - thank you! 🙏
Thanks Paul... I’m sure I’ll find these reminders very useful...
You are welcome - thanking you for your support.
Number 1 Teacher
Hi. Your guidance helping me a lot. I m from Jammu and Kashmir. India.
Hey Paul, What are the correct F stop and shutter speed for sharp picture for Nikon D500 and Nikkor 200-500 combo.?
thank u so much Paul ... 🙏🏻
this is the one which i am looking for ...
Oh I get it..So I've been watching you're moon shot video....you said to put your settings at 250. I have a canon camera so I need to put it at 300 length, x 1.6 for = 360 right?
Thank you you're a star, love these bite size tutorials.
You spoke of the shutter speed vs focal length and then went on to is but did not mention if this affects shutter speed.
@@photogenius Thank you for your suggestion.I will try that :) by the way I have one another lens which is non Vr lens of 19 35mm 3.5 4.5 vivitar series lens,if I shoot at 35 mm is it ok to shoot handheld at may be 1/60 shutter speed at
the slowest to get blurred free images because of lens being Non Vr?any shutter speed suggestions for non vr lenses ?and another thing is that the lens has bad flaring when shooting into the sun.I have a UV haze filter which i don't use it often, will that help to reduce flare and also haze in the sky if in use???or shall i purchase a screw hood in the market ?do you think the hood will work ie for flaring?i am also a bit concerned if the hood will cast a shadow in pictures therefore i am hesitant to make that purchase.
@@photogenius Thank you Paul
Photo Genius I’ll definitely keep on trying! Thanks!
Photo Genius Thank very much I really appreciate your recommendation.
What if I don’t have live view on my canon camera and can not digital zoom before taking the shot; how do I nail focus every time while using manual focus?
Thank you!
Thanks for your excellent tips👍
👍👍 Thanks 👍 👍
Doing God’s work out here, thanks for the videos
4:35 I'm gonna try and put that to practice next time I'm out taking pictures! Can't wait to see the results 😁
I took some photos earlier this week of butterflies (We have an 'invasion' from Africa atm xD) and some turned out great - However I'm sure this new trick will help ensure more focus out of the box.
Very good video overall with many useful hints and instructions.
I might have to finally dive into which photo editor I'll be using since I've decided never to revisit Adobe 😒
Aurora HDR looks very promising 🤗
Thank you 😀. Butterflies can be tricky so I hope it goes well.
Thank you for your continued support, really appreciate 👍
Paul.
@@photogenius Butterflies are certainly tricky - And once I finally found one that busy eating nectar a bee came shortly after and scared the bugger away 😂
- Went to the cemetery, as I always do haha and spotted one butterfly I had the pleasure to shoot for 5 minutes!
About 2-3 minutes in, after I had inched so far in I was practically on top of it, I captured a sequence of it walking while having it's wings closed, out to the sun to bathe 😊
Still haven't gotten around to making a .gif/whatever out of it yet though but it'll come!
Thank you so much..You are awesome
When you say 1/200 or higher you mean higher as 1/400 (which in real life is a lower number) or do you mean 1/100 which is a higher number?
When I say higher I mean faster.
one funny question --- if my camera is limited by f stop 8.0 and still I want to take sharp landscape photo wit my manual mode Can I place something like a pin hole disc in front of the lens and increase exposure by putting the camera on tri pod off course ?
What camera are you using? If it's a bridge camera then the aperture at f8 and shooting with a wide focal length you should get a nice sharp image.
Which button is for fast shuttle speed?
I’m new to lol off this.
To change the shutter speed - simply turn the dial on the camera to adjust.
This was a great tutorial! I love all your videos:-)
Hello Paul great video mate! The Nikon crop factor your talking about is that for a dx camera? What about the fx camera I take it you shoot at 200mm don't go below 200mm?
Correct, full frame (FX) on a Nikon the crop factor is 1. so 200mm = 1/200 shutter or higher.
Thank you for watching.
Hi Paul ive got interested in photography and i like wildlife photography to be my thing what camera do you think would be be suttable for me
Paul, a question: I do have an old Nikon N2000,with a 50mm 1.8 lens.
Thanks mate very useful tips.
You are welcome Pereira 👍👍👍
@@photogenius mate care to give me advice on this emolux 0.45mm wide angle converter i recent purchase. To me is a great product on my kit len 16-50mm.
Great video, as usual
great information , thanks

@@photogenius than you photo genious...I will visit the Cathedral at St Albans Herts UK...and give it a go
Which camera is best for wildlife under 1lak
Most current DSLR / Mirrorless cameras will do the job just fine. The lens is actually going to be something you should consider more than the body of the camera. Look for a good telephoto lens and learn how to use the camera manually for better results.
Canon 7D mk-II, Canon 100-400mm IS USM-ii. That's what I use for wildlife.
my canon 4000D was working okay now wen take picture the red lite comes on watt is the promblem the sandisk ? thank you Paul
Great video -- thanks 👍
Glad you enjoyed it Bob, thank you.
I understood why I shooted the photos so worse when I saw these viedo. Thanks for showing your useful methods.
My canon rebel t7 wont take pictures on manual mode.Just white screen appears after I click. Please help. Thanks!
Thank you..brilliant tips :))
As a noob I just move the camera to get the focus point where I want and after I focused I move it back and take the shot.
Yep, that can work - but if you are close to the subject you may find that focusing on a subject then re-composing throws the subject slightly out of focus.
