Hello friends! A couple of you asked about the yarn in the video...the cream is Bernat Home Dec and the pink is Lion Brand Baby's First! PS There is a teeny blooper in this video 😂 anyone notice? (I know Beth did, thanks!) 🤣
I have watched probably 10 videos on this stitch trying to understand a sweater pattern I'm working on that has parts in the round but starts going front to back. Your video was finally clear to me about the going in the Upside down V on both sides when doing turning back and forth. I could not get this clearly explained until your video. Thank you so much! I understand the round is done differently. Very important and clear video 🙂
Thank you so much! After getting frustrated and restarting my project half a dozen times, this is the only video that’s explained flat waistcoat stitch in a clear way!
Thanks for the video - this is the only one I've found where you join with a SL ST in the round so the pattern doesn't start to 'barber pole'. I want to do some fair isle designs that would look awkward if just continuing in circles.
Hi! I've been trying to do this stitch for a while now but had so many problems! It was the fact that no matter how lose I tried to make my stitches, I just couldn't get in there with my hook. I finally was able to fix this problem and I did try going up a hook size or two like you suggested (that was a great idea by the way and I hope this works for others) but for some reason, going down a hook size or two worked for me. I also kept my stitches very lose. This helped me get into the V's much easier with point of my hook. I know this may not help everyone but I just thought I would share it because this is the only thing that worked for me so far. Thanks so much for the excellent tutorial!
What a cool stitch! I really enjoyed listening to your easy, friendly voice. You sound just like a really good & smart friend I went to Nursing School with. Very Pleasant Indeed😽 My Mom & Granny were fundamentalist crocheters; they only made blankets using Single, Double, Treble & of course Granny Square crochet stitches. Ergo… Those are all I first learned until the Internet swept-in . I don’t quite know what I’ll use the Waistcoat Stitch for, but it’s good just to know it. Thanks 🙏🏼
Thank you. I just saw a sock pattern that uses this. However the yarn they were working with was too small for me to see what they were doing. Thanks for using a bigger yarn and larger hook.
I saw a video doing this stitch where u crocheted into the back slanted/diagonal bar-it was very clear and easy to understand but my hand was hurting from the constant awkward position of my hook in order to get into the diagonal bar! I c it is still a struggle BUT I much prefer ur method-brilliant, ty for sharing and for ur easy to understand instructions and demos! Also ur stitches are vertical rather than horizontal as the other video was! Please don’t get me wrong she was a very good instructor too, I just prefer ur method and the fact that U also showed how to work this stitch in the round! Love it!
I'm just learning crochet after a lifetime of knitting. Biggest thing for me was ripping out was like h eaven compared to going back rows depending on what yarn. This is the perfect stitch for me and your video is so super clear and you explain things so well :D I'm looking forward to watching lots of them! Thanks!
Great looking stitch!!! Great video!!! I want to make a basket with this stitch. I've seen them, but I didn't know how to make the stitch!!! TFS!!! Austin TX USA
Very good video! Stitch simplified very well. I am an experienced knitter, not so much crochet so this was perfect! If you need to learn this stitch I recommend this video. Good job and Thanks!
Thanks a lot for the tutorial. I have been looking for a tutorial for this stitch for a couple of hours now. My project are some cute baskets for my little ones nappy-changing table. It looks amazing :)
Clear instructions. I love this stitch. So If I understand correctly when working it flat, for the first row you insert the hook inside the “V” but all other rows you would insert the hook in the upside down “V”s?
any tips on why my stitches look like they are leaning to one side when I use the waistcoat stitch? I'm using loose tension, but the rows look slanted instead of straight up and down which makes my graphics look weird...TIA!
You mention, while doing the flat version that the foundation chain is usually pretty tight. Would doing a SC foundation chain help it to be less tight?
You mentioned that the first row was really tight. I got a good start by using a single crochet base where chain and single crochet are made simultaneously. Alas! My stitches didn't line up properly! Mine just looks like an OCD nightmare with upside down v's had numerous right side up v's mixed in! I must look at the back more often!
I made a pair of mittens with this stitch (in the round). I found it a bit challenging to get the hook through and had to change to a smaller, more pointy hook. I love the effect though.
Can you show a tutorial on using this stitch to make a basic hat? I've been wanting a knit-like look for hats and scarves for the homeless without the stiffness of the SC. But am uncertain if following a pattern that was made for SC would necessarily work for this stitch ???
This is quite a stiff stitch. For a softer stitch that looks like stockinette knit, try the Tunisian knit stitch or the Camel stitch (HDC through the 3rd loop).
I was trying to get a uo close view if this stitch after reviewing fair isle. However the instructor went under 2 loops of the v and caught the horizontal st on the opposite side. Are you doing that here. Ty
If I wanted to use this stitch on some of the projects I make like on dolls clothes things like that would it be ok or just follow the pattern stitches it calls for tia
It’s not very stretchy. I made a hat with this stitch in a fair isle style and you have to do it loose or it’s way too tight. I learned the hard way lol
I love how this stitch looks like knitting , I would like to make a hat in it but would it work with increasing or decreasing stitches ? Thank you , I did notice blooper but it's no problem 😊Amanda xx
What a good question. Seems like any increase/decrease would be glaringly obvious if worked in that middle V. Humph? 😉 Later: Just thought about this again & maybe going with a smaller/larger hook might work well for sizing stitches.
Could you move your hands so I can see what you're doing better, please. I've checked several sites and yours is the best so thank you. I've tried on and off for about 30 years to learn crochet and I'm finally getting the hang of it.
Would it be difficult to use this stitch to make a sweater? I have never used this stitch. I’m on a “advanced beginner” level. Have only made one beginner level sweater.
That is wonderful, now my attention span is short and I might have missed the answer, can this stitch be used with a worsted weight yarn or a dk weight yarn and a smaller hook?
(insert hook low into body of each stitch, below the top loops of the stitch and in between the verticle bars of the stitch from the previous row ,(AH1 ,yo,pull through,yo pull loop through,yo, pull loop through two loops on hook ) )..........Does this description means what u r doing in this video????
Did I miss something? I would like to see the exit of the hook on the back side when working in the round as to not cause leaning. I don't know where the hook should be coming out.
I give up on this Waistcoat stich -- it's TOO HARD to get your needle through the upside down "Vs." I've tried using a bigger needle, still I can't do it. Anyone who can, you are blessed because it's a very, very nice and warm stitch.

You didn't cut that out! hehehehe shhhh!
Great video, but I couldn't see how the back of the stitch was supposed to look like in the round.
how can I buy this yarn in England please,I love pink 🎀🌸

Exactly and the color stood out to see what’s being done. I finally got it.

Awesome new stitch for this crocheter ( one who crochets....😜) THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!

I have never done this stitch with crochet but I have done the knit stitch in tunisian crochet. Thanks for sharing this, greetings from Sweden.
No, I have never worked this stitch before. Thank you for sharing!
Thank you! This tutorial is so clear and easy to understand. I will be making potholders for myself with it - probably in the round first.
Thank you so much for showing how to go flat and round with this stitch. As a beginner, the mistake is always when i'm going on a new row.

Loved this Stitch Tutorial! Easily explained and your voice is encouraging!
I've never heard of the stitch before but I will be coming up with something love it
I'm here to learn this stitch to make a "Bernie's mittens" doll.
I’m here to make his gloves!!
Me too!)) Making Bernie doll
SAME!!!
And me,
And I already finished my Bernie Sanders Doll. And finally, I knitted his mini mittens with knitting needles.
Thanks for posting this tutorial! Super straightforward and helpful ❤
I want to knit a project but can't seem to do so without missing a stitch or two. This is my opinion so thank you for explaining it so well.
Thank you for the video. What worked best for me was going down a hook size and working very loose stitches. Beautiful look.
Thanks a lot for the tutorial. I have been looking for a tutorial for this stitch for a couple of hours now. My project are some cute baskets for my little ones nappy-changing table. It looks amazing :)
I'm going to use this stitch to make s sweater for my grandson. Thanks so much.
You left in an editing note at 10:21. Just an FYI in case you want to fix it. I love the tutorial and the stitch! Thank you so much.
Lol, I saw that too! We'll just consider it a "blooper" for now!! ;)
Its easy !! I love the stitch which shows a knit stitch.
Clear instructions. I love this stitch. So
If I understand correctly when working it flat, for the first row you insert the hook inside the “V” but all other rows you would insert the hook in the upside down “V”s?
I love that stitch it looks so easy to do thank you so much for sharing I’m going to crochet a blanket and a headband using this stitch 😊😊😊😊
This would make a nice sturdy purse done in the round. 👍 great pattern
Thank you your instructions are very clear and well explained 👍🏻🌹
Loved it! How to increase and decrease with this stitch?
It looks more like knitting when crocheted in the round. The V's are offset when done flat.
This is easy to follow. Thank you for making this video
Love the waistcoast stitch ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤thank you for teaching how is goes ❤❤❤❤
Wow it’s pretty cool. I’m going to make some baby hats with this stitch. It’s really easy. Thank you so much.
These look like they would make nice leg warmers, or add a loop, and make hand warmers! Thanks.

I have the same problem...
How do you increase with waist coat stitches???
explained very well.Thank you so much.
I’ve never done that stitch I do need it because I like the way it looks but it takes so long to need some thing and crochet it so I really like this
Can you increase the kint stitch when working in the round?
This was super helpful. I am trying to turn a knit pattern into something I can do. Because I can't knit
Thanks! So clear and easy to follow. Now I know why mine didn't come out right😊
Thank you so much. Very clear instructions.❤️
i like this stich for dish cloth but in cotton thanks 👍
Thank you so much for this video, it helped a lot!! 🙏
No I have not crocheted this stitch. I might give it a try. Sometimes I have a hard time seeing my V's
You mention, while doing the flat version that the foundation chain is usually pretty tight. Would doing a SC foundation chain help it to be less tight?
It would.
Thanks sweetheart for your tutorial 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
I’ve always had a problem with this stitch now I knew my mistake
It was because I do x sc instead of v sc
I like this stitch. I love your tutorials. Thank you for sharing.
Thanks, Jennifer, that helped me a lot to understand. ..good demo
Thanks for the tutorial it’s really helpful 👍
How do you ad extra stitches for example for a triangle shawl. Thank you
You mentioned that the first row was really tight. I got a good start by using a single crochet base where chain and single crochet are made simultaneously.

Hi there one question what kind of yarns is that? Thanks for the review it's awesome and good to know I didn't
I wondered too, it's beautiful. I did check the description box thinking it might be there, but it's not as of the time I write this.
Thank you! The cream yarn is Bernat Home Dec and the pink yarn is Lion Brand Baby's First! :)
I didn't think I had done this stitch but I kinda have bc I did a mosaic basket and with your second color you go into the v.
how do u go through the v i try and it is either one side of the sc were it goes normale no where at all can mine do that or i cant see it
I was trying to get a uo close view if this stitch after reviewing fair isle. However the instructor went under 2 loops of the v and caught the horizontal st on the opposite side. Are you doing that here. Ty
Is this also known as a split half double crochet stitch if you choose that over a single crochet?
Great tutorial. Thanks🧶

I would like to make a ear warmer (headband) with this stitch. Is there enough stretch in it? Great tutorial as usual
It’s not very stretchy. I made a hat with this stitch in a fair isle style and you have to do it loose or it’s way too tight. I learned the hard way lol
I keep crocheting into the space shown but my v's do not line up. What am I doing wrong? Thanks for the tutorial.

Yes.

Does it have to be just a single crochet?

love your hook!! what kind is it?
My vs arent stacking for me. I m doing a scarf :( What am I doing wrong?
That is wonderful, now my attention span is short and I might have missed the answer, can this stitch be used with a worsted weight yarn or a dk weight yarn and a smaller hook?
Yes! Absolutely, just experiment by going up a hook size or two to keep things nice and loose!
@@fiberflux thank you for such a quick response! I'm excited to get started.
I’ve only done this with the Tunisian knit stitch.
