Replaced the new after market tps from a previous code with a gm one from eBay. Code gone runs like a old Chevy truck again! This vid got me thinking about my tj Wrangler, on a warm day on a long pull ,I shut it down come back to it & it goes blub, blub,blub, then clears out & runs fine. The injections vapor lock from the heat of the cats below the manifolds. Just like the carbs of old.

    Yet another double thumbs up SMA production. Excellent and very quick diagnosis. We have to find a way to get you a TV show or some type of funded showcase to earn the big bucks. Your videos demonstrate that you have the talent, presentation, delivery, and personality to thrive with a big opportunity. Found out yesterday that the youtube revenue is weak sauce paying only .001 cents per fully watched rolled video. Yikes! Amazon revenue helps but it is not much better. I know there is a way.

      South Main Auto Repair Keep doing what you are doing because you are doing it very well. I could see a day in the not too distant future where a few big sponsors would want to hire you to do a show on Cable TV. It would probably include basic tasks that DIY'ers want to perform and in the commercials sponsors could advertise batteries, parts, fluids, tools, etc. It will happen as soon as the sponsors realize they can make more money selling their stuff with you on Cable TV and as their spokesperson than simply purchasing general advertising. Autozone spent $70 million in advertising last year, Napa $34 million, and Advanced Auto $30 million.

    Nice one,like you said if you don't know what you're looking at it will wipe the floor with you.and it did to me with my '90 camaro, I checked every thing,pulled fuel pump checked tank,pulled distributer and ignition module,checked pcm and prom,checked all grounds,until I finally checked each bank injector resistance and found one side had higher resistance than the other bank,was scratching my head until my forman came over to my house,asked which bank was high and unplugged each injector and boom engine fired up.experience is a real teacher,and that was one heck of a learning experience early in my mechanic career.

    Hi Eric! We have a 99 C5 Corvette in our shop that belongs to my sister. While replacing the starter, one of the guys hooked up a gray/black wire to the positive on the starter that didn't belong and ever since that happened it won't start.
    They put a new PCM behind the right front wheel which solved nothing as well as a new key ignition. That's where they have gotten with it then asked for my help
    Its cranks but won't start, has no comm, lost fuel gauge it stays on Empty, engine temp gauge reads 270 all of the time when they were working fine.
    no spark, no power to the fuel relay during cranking probably no injector pulse either during cranking didn't check because fuel pump not running.
    With the key switched on this thing is sparking on #1 and #3 coils continuously using the alligator clip on coil and other end held close to ground.
    This is like a high RPM spark not just a tap tap tap, its like a blur spark. I assume it sparks on all 8 like this
    Relay # 52 under the hood is the ign relay and with the key on it non stop buzzes no doubt because the coils are firing non stop.
    If I power that relay it up it runs the engine fan wide open.
    I don't know to me it soulds like some grounds may be burned out and some wires fused together somewhere.
    Where would you start on this?

    Did you check the fuel pressure first from the schrader fitting on the fuel rail? These are notorious for the in tank pumps slowly failing, with the ECM adjusting the solenoid duty cycle longer, until pressure is so low the engine won't run at all. The fuel filter on the frame rail under the driver often gets clogged, too. I have removed all injectors and rebuilt them,with parts from Mr. Injector, and even freed up stuck ones, by soaking in cleaner and biodiesel, and momentarily turning them on and off until you can hear and feel them click.

    That little fuse lead you made there to grab a current ramp is genius! I just wish more cars had a separate fused injector circuits.
    The worst thing you can do to those Multec 1s is allow them to sit for long periods of time with fuel in them. GM used a saturated coil design (not to be confused with a saturated switch design), which had the injector coil submerged in gasoline to keep it cool. This allowed GM to use a larger coil for better pintle control, but allowing fuel to sit, or even just using a strong injector cleaner (BG44K, Polytron GDFC, etc.) can strip the insulating varnish off the coil windings and cause a short.

    Another super SMA video. The amount of work you put into even a short 11 minute video is so appreciated. High quality video, production, editing, clean humor, and bringing in the normal everyday shop life makes your videos fascinating to watch. I only found your channel a month ago and have binged-watched all the CEL vids and have watched nearly all of the nuts/bolts videos. Your diagnostic abilities are super and I have learned more in the month of watching your videos than I have over the last 10-20 years of doing my own work.
    It's great to see how you use your scope. While I don't have a $10k Verus I do have a couple of old analog Tektronix CRT scopes and you've taught me how to use them for automotive diagnostics. A side hobby is repairing the old scopes and I have a little Tek 314 analog storage scope that is AC or DC powered. After watching your videos I figured out how to store both up and downstream O2 sensor waveforms at the same time on that old 80's era scope. I couldn't have done it without your super videos. I've progressed into watching ScannerDanner now too and I understand more of what he's doing now thanks to your vids.
    So, a big thanks to you, Eric O. Keep the videos coming. If you did one a day it still wouldn't be enough! I can only think of one thing I'd like to see in your videos and it would be to throw in quick comments in the videos on how one might diagnose the same thing without the expensive Verus (like this vid.) If you have quick thoughts about that as you're recording it's great to hear those ideas.
    I was a bit disappointed, though...no brake parts cleaner in this one!

    • @SouthMainAuto
      @SouthMainAuto  8 років тому +1

      +johnaclark1 Haha sorry about the brake clean but glad to hear you are liking the vids and learning a bit here and there from them :)

    • @johnaclark1
      @johnaclark1 8 років тому

      +South Main Auto Repair I've learned a lot! In fact, today I just had an issue with my 08 Ody Touring 148K. AC would get warm at idle, but fine going down the road. Put my gauges on and high and low were both too high. Checked flow through the condenser and found the driver side fan (radiator fan) was off and passenger side fan (condenser fan) was on high. Both fans would run on low speed but the radiator fan shut down when high was called for by the pressure switch.
      The Factory Service manual has a troubleshooting section for this and it took me down the road to the PCM being bad-almost plain as day. Figuring that was unlikely I dug out the wiring diagram and studied for a while checking this and that, jumping relays with my new "scope on a rope" (All these years I figured a good Fluke meter was enough but thanks to watching too many SMA vids I bought a test light.)
      After studying the wiring diagram and jumping relays with the test light I determined there was more to the story than the circuit troubleshooting procedure gave me. No wonder you get vehicles that the dealer can't fix! It didn't have me check any of the fuses for this problem and I didn't think it was a fuse problem initially since the fan ran fine in low speed. Only by using the wiring diagram did I figure out the radiator fan used the condenser fan power and relay for low speed and it's own power for high speed. Found no power to the load side of the relay. Found the 30A fuse blown. *Smacks head* Not sure why it blew but replaced it and it's working. I'll have to keep an eye on that. Honda never even had me check that in their troubleshooter. Following your thinking is what helped me find the issue...rare as it is on my Honda.
      Can't thank you enough for the time you put in to bring us into your shop. Next best thing to actually being there watching over your shoulder.

    • @SouthMainAuto
      @SouthMainAuto  8 років тому +1

      Way to go man! Makes me wonder though just like you why the heck it blew in the first place. I agree about the flow charts. You did it the right way by knowing it was unlikely and then used your head!

    • @johnaclark1
      @johnaclark1 8 років тому

      +South Main Auto Repair Yeah, that's a big fuse to blow. The circuit isn't too complicated on that fuse so I'll have a look at it and keep an eye on it. Oh, and after the fan started working the pressures went right to normal. Gotta love a good fix!
      Not sure if you'll see or have time for this off-topic question but the Odyssey Factory Service Manual makes many references to "Jump the SCS line with the HDS" before removing computer connectors to check wiring, stating it's necessary to prevent damage to the PCM. It was a step in this troubleshooting procedure for the fans and I just skipped it assuming the wiring was good. I'm sure the Verus will do this. Have you run into this on Hondas? For someone lacking the bidirectional scan tool capability is there a safe way to do this? What I've read says this just jumps pin 4 and pin 9 on the DLC. One could easily get a cheap OBDII connector from eBay and put a jumper wire on it or just backprobe in a jumper but would it require key on engine off, jump the SCS, then key off or can you just jump it with the key off engine off? Would love your thoughts on the best sequence to use if you jump it manually.

    Nice quick diagnosis definitely shorted injectors change them all. Nice game plan! If people are going to do long term storage they'd do themselves a big favor to run the tank dry, put a gallon of ethanol fuel in (if available) & run it until it dies, when they bring it out of storage change the fuel filter and drive. I use 10% ethanol fuel & fuel stabilizer in my Triton & have never had an issue but ethanol fuel wreaks havoc in fuel systems & anything higher than 10% ethanol will grenade a marine 2 stroke outboard & at @$25K-30K for a 250 HP Optimax you better be checking the fuel label for ethanol content at the pumps...E15 could ruin what should be a relaxing bass fishing day on the lake! Another enjoyable relaxing time is watching SMA videos...nice video Eric! If I decide to tow my Triton to NY when I visit my family I'll stop by and take you fishing! If I don't bring the bass boat I still plan on stopping by to shake your hand!

    Just as if holding the rotor shaft of an electric motor- gumming up the pintle barrel of an injector will cause it to ramp up current, overheat, and burn out. Sometimes, though- the dwell time and duty cycle will be longer too, and cause a waveform like that. I really wish you had scoped that last C-4 for comparison. Do you have a "Hot Shot"? It's a container you put solvent in, regulated shop air in one end, hose to schrader on fuel rail the other, unplug fuel pump, try to- then run engine with the solvent only. Zylene works the best (carb cleaner). I just can't believe *all 8* are "bad" enough to say replace. Once heat (resistance) weakened, though- they won't be long for this world.

    • @SouthMainAuto
      @SouthMainAuto  8 років тому +1

      +HUBBABUBBA DOOPYDOOP I current ramped them later that day when the car started...2 of them worked... so it got all 8 :)

      South Main Auto Repair Such an expensive car- with such cheap parts! Also- it doesn't help having a neglective owner.
      Sta-bil and fogging oil for the snow blower, snow mobile and lawn mower-
      but who cares about the Corvette?
      Sometimes those "barn finds" are just money pits, waiting for a sucker with money. Start really driving it- then it starts nickling and diming you to death. Pretty soon- you bought a whole new car.
      Believe me- I know.
      I'm on the 11th girlfriend, and the 12th car.
      They're all the same.

      +South Main Auto Repair Nope, a guy needs to stay in his own wheelhouse. You can't beat a guy at his own trade. An old timer told me that when I was a kid, and not only didn't I forget the wisdom, it has been confirmed many times as I've "matured."
      "You can clearly see that this waveform doesn't conform to how a normal injector waveform looks." Now, the first question an old woodworker might ask is "what the heck is a waveform?"
      Remember math class? You would sleep through a few classes, and suddenly you didn't know what the heck was going on?
      Of course, I'm kidding. Don't you dare dumb down your presentations. I love the technical and scientific stuff, and so does everyone else. Who else gets a 500/1 up-check ratio. Only you.

    I believe before I passed judgement on this one, I'd have at least done a fuel pressure test and maybe done some resistance tests on a few injectors...Granted, there doesn't appear to be an inductive current ramp-up on the current pattern, but that in itself proves it must be the injectors alone?
    I guess these cars have a known track record of bad injectors? Was there a class action lawsuit?

    • @joelopez6525
      @joelopez6525 8 років тому +1

      Lol, no. Dealerships can get sued over Recalls only. Recalls are known safety issues that have caused harm or damage. This issue was a TSB or technical service bulletin. TSB come out all the time. Known issues or faults with part failures. Some dealers offer assistance programs, others just let you deal with it. Hopefully it happens while you still have warranty coverage if not, you get the bill.

    • @haywardsautomotive6156
      @haywardsautomotive6156 8 років тому

      +Clete88 No need to do resistance checks that's the advantage of using a lab scope. Current ramp shows shorted injectors and best economical practice for the Vette b/c of the disassembly time required to change an injector is replace them all at same time, flush tank, change fuel filter, fresh fuel definitely ethanol free if he's going to store it again and owner will be happy. I can be pretty confident saying if customer okays repair Eric will check fuel pressure prior to draining the tank so if it needs a fuel pump he'll change it then. He is thorough!!

    • @LoreMaster2006
      @LoreMaster2006 8 років тому

      +Clete88
      Eric said it needs injectors at the very least. His current ramp test by itself is were I would have gone first because he did say the fuel pump was running. That would have been good enough to move on from performing a fuel pressure test. Current ramping the Pump will(I'm sure) be done before it leaves. He is very thorough.
      Any vehicle sitting this long has a BIG chance for other issues. You must fix what you know is broken first. Eric nailed this failed system down nicely/quickly! Most shops (that I see) don't even go that far they just throw parts based on symptom(s).
      There is no right way or wrong way to diagnosis as long as you come up with the information needed from the chosen test performed. Eric did exactly what any advanced level diagnostician would have done.
      thumbs up Eric:)
