I just came across your video on the 1989 Corvette that you worked on about the fuel injectors. For the past 15 years or so I have not drove my 1988 Corvette because of the same issues. Mine has quit while driving it sitting at red lights or stop signs just too scared to go anywhere in it. Now I know what the problem is I want to thank you so much for this video. I watched both videos beginning to end. I am not a mechanic but I feel this is something that I can do. You seem to be a fine gentleman and very patient. Your dad has taught you well once again thank you

I think Eric is the shit too.I wonder if he is too ( what i think is a lil overly cautious) all the time, or just for video and cause so many criticizing lil vagina weeniers on these comments lmao!
I take precautions that i think are truely necessary I have been a mobile mechanic for ten years, this guy is good. I think he is awesome, i would love to learn from him. I'll work free, I need to learn can bus, and what scan tool is the best. I have learned that not one will do. You need ten! And a thousand monthly subscriptions, and updates. The more pro i turn, the more money it cost me.
I love Scanner Danner, and Eric the car guy ( he is a lil more shade tree and has more tools like a self taught guy has, like me) No offense Eric the car guy, i learned alot from you, i teach all my customers about the boiling points with or with out coolant, and how every psi increases the boiling tempature a few degrees. And i didnt know so much about rad caps lol
. I already started paying for Alldata, and next is a scanner ( a real one) and a smoke machine. Recommendations?

Your videos are so entertaining that I've lost too much sleep staying up watching them. As an electrical engineer, I appreciate your logical troubleshooting work finding the exact cause of the problem and not keep swapping out parts until the problem is fixed. I often do the same logical troubleshooting with electronic systems. Having knowledge of the use of your instrumentation is something I've rarely seem mechanics do. Usually it's more like guessing for them rather than using logical troubleshooting techniques along with instrumentation to evaluate the parameters of the car's components. It kind of feels like I'm in the shop with you just sipping on a beer and eating wings while I watch you work. Thanks for all of the effort you put into making these videos. I've learned a lot from them and I, and I'm sure all of your viewers, appreciate it!

Being an old school mechanic I can really appreciate your diagnostics and technics. When I took my 2004 Honda Accord to the Honda dealer to get a problem with the AC fixed I had already diagnosed what the problem was, "blend door actuator". Heat coming out of the left vent, cold coming out of the right. They kept pushing the AC leak theory, putting dye in the ac during a refill it didn't need. I told them a leak would not have anything to do with heat and cold coming out of vents at the same time. $166.00 later and they still won't admit to their incompetence. We went round and round about that. Troubleshooting is my passion. Not solving a problem drives me crazy. "The blend door is sticking"
Great job! Keep up the good work.

I just have to say that at 27 years since new, those fuel injectors didn't owe anybody anything. They are precision parts and can't be expected to last forever. Pretty amazing that the car still runs and drives pretty much like new. I used to work at GM and I drove plenty of those C-4 Corvettes. They did ride rough, but they had lots of low-end torque and they stuck to the pavement like nobody's business, at least compared to anything else you could buy for less than $35k.

Just have to comment on this 6 year old video, which looks like it was recorded yesterday. 3 things; 1) Its astounding, the care you took with this customer’s 26 year old “collector” car ( now 32 years); 2) It was awesome that your Dad had the injector retainers (hopefully the owner tipped him the $100, I would have!); 3) I just knew you were going to reinstall the Corvette badge on the valve cover, because that’s just who you are! You are an amazing mechanic/technician, being as young as you are! If I was ever within 200 hundred miles of your shop, heck probably within the state of New York, I would come to shake your hand! This is the third video I have watched with Eric doing the work! Obviously a very good job of Trouble Shooting and explaining the process and repair and then confirming the before/after measurements, excellent. I have been in the Auto Service Repair Business for 50 years and can tell everyone that I would have Eric work on my cars any day of the week.
Several other viewers have commented on why they can't get this kind of quality work from their service provider.
It has been my First Hand experience that the reasons lies in two general areas, first is the Flat Rate System that to many Tech are paid under as compared to a Fair Hourly Rate. The Auto Industry has paid their Techs using this system, while the Commercial Truck/Construction Equipment Industry pays their Techs on the Hourly Basis. One system encourages a quality repair, while the other encourages get the job done FAST, not necessary good. Secondly, Eric uses the 3C's method, i.e. Complaint/Cause of the problem/Correction, hence 3Cs. You must get to the Root Cause of the problem if you expect to repair it!

    • @chrisbentleywalkingandrambling
      @chrisbentleywalkingandrambling 2 роки тому

I agree, some shops just want to parts bomb it until it works, whereas Eric will complete a root cause analysis and fix only what needs fixing and ADVISE the customer what they should also replace either now or later. That's the sort or service that you need and will keep people com8ng back. At for pay per job vs hourly rate. You hit the nail squarely on the head. Fast turnover of jobs means more money vs a living wage and a good repair. I think everyone should be hourly rate but I'm from the other side of the pond and people here get paid per hour. If Eric O, Ray or Ivan lived near me or within a couple hundred of miles then I'd drive over to them every time. I'd far rather pay more for diagnostic and repair than parts bombing the Car. I'm sure there are more like Eric out there but the bad mechanics always leave you wary of where you go for repairs these days.

That extended crank when cold- could easily be caused by what I noticed on your scan tool. The TPS voltage is at 0.50v. It should be 0.38v-0.42v max. That could prevent the Primer Shot function. Adjust by slightly loosening the 2 mounting screws, KOEO, and rotate it until the proper reading is obtained. I keep mine at 0.39v. Also related to this, and the noticeable long time for closed loop operation- could be a lazy or failing Coolant Temperature Sensor.

Hey I just got a 89, mine is kinda cranks a little when it's cold, then starts, then it does a little bit better when its warm, could that be one of the things u were saying, and it has a slight mise at idle, and smooths at driving.

@@davidminassian9953 There is an unwritten list of things that must be done to these 3.8L LN3 engines, that hardly any owner does. Or- they trust the previous owner that swears what was done, but then still have problems- then their Wife forces them to sell it, because some idiot says it's not worth it. Tell me- where are these new plastic buckets of shit going to be in 34 years? I have 162k on mine, $4k in parts installed, $4k in other parts bought & about to be installed, by me, by myself.
      Here's your list:
      1) Replace Intake Manifold Gaskets (and all others that come in the kit)
      2) Throttle Position Sensor
      3) Mass Airflow Sensor
      4) Coolant Temperature Sensor
      5) Idle Air Control
      6) O2 Sensor
      7) Spark Plugs
      8) Upgrade Ignition to Delphi type, not Magnavox type
      9) Camshaft Interrupter Magnet
It sounds like a lot, and it is- but the benefit is a smooth, fuel efficient engine. All of these parts are worn by now (34 years). Good news is all of these parts are available at RockAuto. I just carted all for you, Subtotal $446.16.
Price out what renewing a 2022 engine in a car would be? $3k to 5k, +labor @$100 hr.
That's why people sell these cars. That's why I'll never sell mine.

Late to the party but I had an 89 vette with the same issue (no run when hot), this was in 2013, before your video. Luckily, the first step I took was checking the injectors and found 3 bad when the car was hot. Went ahead and bought new injectors, figuring I needed them anyway even I still had the issue. Did alot of research(thx youtube!) plus went through the service manual for the car for the proper steps in replacing the injectors. I am not a mechanic but have done a few mechanical repairs to various cars over the years and unafraid to tackle most jobs.Spent 4 hours in 90 degree heat, in my driveway installing them. NEVER AGAIN, your comment about the car being too low was dead on, my back hurt for 2 weeks after this fix (I was 61 at this point). Anyway, all went well, never had the problem again and had the car for 2 more years and 30k more miles, sold it and got a C5. BTW, discovered your channel about a month ago, enjoy it and thank you for sharing your common sense approach in diagnosing problems.

Somebody needs to pass along good work habits and tech like this. It's pretty freaky to me looking at being around for a pinch over 60 years and started my schooling and work on cars in high school, but switched to electronics when I realized my feet were going to prevent careers like this that depend so much on them. In the time since I first got to peek at injection which I call first generation in my school days, we went through two more generations to get to these systems and now call these vintage! LOL But as these drift into a sort of museum status, it becomes that much more important to preserve model years that were branded and hobbled by early efficiency tech. This left them prey to owners that had to settle for these relative weaklings, and then still didn't have both the time and financial resources to learn what they needed to even preserve the state they were already reduced to.
This project covered so many key elements of mentoring freshmen into the right frame of mind to start reaching over their heads in a way that decreases the likelihood of making things worse than you start with that put so many saveable treasures and useful tools into the quicksand hourglass of failed dreams and history lost to time. The plenum gasket catch was a diamond lesson that things that look the same might be a bear trap! You also incorporated on the fly decisions to save time and skirt increased chances of breaking things that ultimately shelve old things and start taking hits on your reputation and psyche, and result in closed signs going up on shops before the owner really finds their stride.
You could create super affordable subscription lessons that might take off and pave a brighter path in this birthing new age that threatens literally everything we now know and do. You can appeal to both career seeking viewers as well as us sundowning hasbeens just licking our wounds with the entertainment. You're at a fork in the road between the fossil fuel dinosaurs and the new electric age and maybe you can straddle those two horses long enough to pick a favorite or keep their paths close enough together to surf both boards to shore. You demonstrate how to maximize your productive choices by minimizing your destructive voices. It's fun watching you work!

I was an auto mechanic from 1968 to 1983 and owned the shop from 73 to 83 I got a kick out of it when you said you didn't like working on older cars. When I was working on cars you could practically sit on the fender well and change the spark plugs. In my opinion this is the absolute worst, disgusting, stressful trade there is. It's aggravating and I can't tell you how many times the replacement parts after contorting yourself to get them installed were DOA. I hated every minute of the trade. I changed careers in 83 to law enforcement. I'm now retired and would not even think about working on cars of today. I commend you for the time and effort you put into these videos. I just happened across your UA-cam videos today by chance and it brought back the nausea that I remember from working on these things. Your patience is outstanding and your efforts to share your trade definitely commendable. My overall thoughts regarding the trades carpentry, plumbing, electrician and auto mechanics is that with the first three trades whoever performs these trades on your home increases your home's value with the improvements so the customers are more likely to accept the cost of the repairs. In mechanic however can we build a car from stem to stern they still look up the price in the NADA book and none of the cost of repairs is reflected in any increased value. Auto mechanics is a loser from the begin. This is why no one wants to spend a penny on their auto repairs there's no return on investment for the customer. In my opinion I think anyone who repairs cars today deserves a medal.

      @davidhair8295 Рік тому

Vettes have had transverse springs in the rear from '63. Steel from 63 till 81, I think. At some point they changed to fiberglass. I think the hard ride in old C-4s comes in part from Chev wanting to produce the 1G skid pad number and the age of the shocks and rubber bushings in currently existing C-4s. I have a tough riding 88 right now, but at one time had a nearly new 89. I do not recall the 89 riding nearly as rough as the 88. I was younger then and had a greater tolerance for roughness!

That wasn't a turbo sound effect , it was all the vacuum leaks under the dash for the HVAC controls , LOL

Amazing how such a big engine can produce so little power? So, 'burnout', you'll be lucky

I had an ‘85 Corvette, so all that looks familiar. Ran great, except for failing alternators due to heat. Generally went into Mr. Goodwrench mode only when I wanted to modify it. It’s gone now. Working on my Cummins 24V is so much easier. You have my admiration and sympathies. You’re doing God’s work for people.

The only car I've witnessed an automatic trans chirp 2nd stock is a 69 Chevelle SS 396. Of course I made an 87 Camaro with a meager 305 do it, but it took some work; TH350 conversion, B&M rebuild kit, Holley 650, Summit HEI, etc.

Good one Eric. Every time I work on a GM, it seems I find an example of overly complex design.

You clearly havent worked on many fords if you think GMs are overly complex. Goddamn ford overengineers their parts until you have to do things like remove the entire intake to change the spark plugs on a lincoln ls with a v6.
      Fuck ford

I love how screwdrivers are just magnetic enough to be a pain, but not magnetic enough to pickup a screw (reminded of trying to finesse valve stem keepers back on) 😋 thanks for the video

I had to take my upper intake and fuel injector rail of my 91 Corvette so many time that I tmed myself the last time ,,7 minutes and 12 seconds ...I think I beat book time by a ton .. but the first time I did it ..well it took more like 2 hours :)
On mine the fue injector clips were more of horse shoe shape..and yes I did not remove the fuel rail ..was able to leave thing in place
